Game Rant Writes "Sonic Forces is now five years old, and while it has plenty of flaws, there are things the 2017 release handles well enough to affect future games."
Sega aims to release 2D Sonic games alongside the 3D ones each year, but it's questionable how the company plans to continue this trend.

I think they're appealing to their younger audience a bit more with this move. Can't say I'm a huge fan, but I'm pretty sure it will go over well with the kiddos.

I cant see how it'd be a bad thing anyway? 😐
Optional feature in an offline game in which characterisation/plot is pretty much irrelevant.. it's a fun harmless idea.
