YES, It is the lowest price for a console launch price in several generations.

Eventually it will merge the RPG and Handheld market into a 2 in 1 console/handheld market. Especially with them working on USB-C add on Batteries. The 800 pound gorilla in the room is all the JRPG's that have been on Handheld since 1999 will now be playable on a home console again. JRPG's didn't stop, they just went to handheld. Plus a back library list of games that most people wanted to play on the large screen can be offered on the Nintendo e store.

(console sales don't earn your company money and often LOSE money by being sold at a loss) Filled with nothing but shovelware the WII did very mediocre in software sales with easily 10million WII owners never buying a game outside of the wii sports game.
The switch was a move in the right direction, but is like an essay that gets a A- FAR FROM GENIUS.
I hope they make some smart moves in the future, they need to open up a dev team that is exclusively aimed at targeting the adult core gamers that PS4 and Xbox cater to. Also the Wii was very cheap to make and was being sold for a profit when it was released. Nintendo not only made a mint off the millions and millions of software sold, but all off the Wii hardware as well.

They were a genius with the Wii, but unfortunately pulled the plug on it and stopped making quality game 2-3 years too soon.

They have done anything genius since.

That's a trick question, you can't. The software sales of Software-Hardware bundles are always placed in the same bracket is standalone sales - it is 'Not' a legit way of insinuating that that is Lone-sales. Any and every game that is paired with a console for a certain period of time will always outsell predecessors or rival games.

(Which is why you can't really compare it with GT, Sony hasn't made a long-lasting 'GT + PS console' and leave it on the market for as long as Nintendo does for its games.)

Wii was not a success. It sold out for soccer moms and physical therapists, it screwed over it's core audience for four generations before that. After physical therapists and soccer moms found no use they dumped the system and didn't support it's successor. It had the shoddiest attachment rate. It was a flash in the pan, nothing more, nothing less.

How many of those people actually returned to that platform? I'm not trying to downplay anything that The Wii achieved​ because it is still a great achievement but we seriously need to stop pretending that any of those people who were purchasing those games were real long term real Gamers, these people were simply jumping on the wave to buy the next fad they were not established to Consumers that would return and it's clear because the game has yet to ever sell anything near that.

It's why it's very difficult to take any of the achievements on that platform seriously in regards to longevity because the large number of people who are purchasing them had no real interest any gaming in terms of long-term any of the success that has garnered by Sony and the PlayStation has been actually based off of what they did it correctly for the actual industry not simply what they were able to do correctly for one generation for a fad based on something that was simply going to fizzle away.

I'm not entirely sure that Mario Kart sales or because of Any established fans because how great was that game if many of those people never came back? I look at it similar to how I saw Twilight Princess a whole bunch of these Gamers were just simply looking for something to try with the motion control because the sales of some of those games on the Wii were astronomically and historically high for a very bizarre reason.

Because if people were purchasing Mario Kart as established fans because of what it did well Mario Kart 8 technically should have been breaking records...

Skyward Sword using Wii Motion Plus and actually releasing when the install this was larger should have absolutely toppled Twilight Princess in sales.

I think all those titles show is that there was a lot of people that were interested in buying these games for novelty not simply because they actually simply cared about the genre or even the industry

I mean it's bragging about one system that was able to achieve that based on casual fans vs Sony which has basically every single generation of significant dominance of actual consumers that actually plan to buy games.

Nintendo missed out on a great opportunity to capitalize on that market by making exclusive content for motion and what they did which I actually don't find genius I actually find it idiot it was they basically left third party control that entire Market as opposed to them investing in their own concept so when you're looking at EA fit No More Heroes Just Dance on other platforms the biggest problem is that is Nintendo that should have been making those type of Concepts more so to keep consumers interested in their company specifically because those third parties had no problem releasing games somewhere else when the competition had a viable option

They wanted to be cheap and Gamble and they paid dearly with all those third party we're just making games everywhere else it's just idiotic and I still don't know why they chose to not invest in that concept.

It's almost as if they ignorantly just assumed they would stay successful with this concept and basically ignored that software dictates the sales of hardware.

So the Wii was definitely a success for casual fans but it's too bad those same casual fans have moved on to Facebook mobile games and other casual applications.

What they gained from the Casual Market was very temporary and it was actually at the cost of their hardcore Market because that market is shrinking faster than it's ever been before for this company and the Wii U sales of very much so that.

Even the 3DS sales show that they're losing their fan base by a ridiculous degree.

I believe that Nintendo should have been investing in there hard core audience just as much if not more than Sony was because Sony was actually buying teams so for Nintendo to actually sell the most units and make the most money yet also spend the least on investing in their actual fanbase goes to show you their motivations that generation in the Wii U's sales go to show you that their Community very much understood that and just simply didn't return.

Nintendo had the majority of the best selling games of last gen (Wii) and this gen (Wii U and now Switch). The sales numbers of their best selling IPs are only matched by those of GTA V and Minecraft.

So, Nintendo has had far more successes and failures. As far as consoles go, only the Virtual Boy was a straight up flop that lost them money, in fact. Even the Wii U, with its terrible sales, was ultimately profitable for Nintendo because of game sales and amiibos.

Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U is far superior than the Mario Kart on the Wii by a ridiculous amount and it hasn't sold a fraction of what Mario Kart on the Wii sold.

Does the install base have to do with anything? It sounds like you've been on this bizarre roller coaster of desperately trying to find any goal post to move in regards to ratios of install bases of course Nintendo is going to have a high attach rate when they actually don't have third-party support their games are really the only significant reasons to own that platform where a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One have a plethora of games that released for their platform.

It's why you have a lot of people playing Persona 5 right now as well as Nier or Yakuza 0 or Gravity Rush 2 what have you.

At the end of the day Sony's job is to sell a lot of units of their own games and outselling Zelda still means Sony made more money off of that title then Nintendo did off of Zelda.

Coming out and showing as figures of how much people in India purchased Zelda based on the ratio of install base means very little and it's just desperate goalpost moving to make yourself feel better.

The fact of the matter is Horizon zero Dawn out sold Zelda and it's a new intellectual property.

Sony could outdo Zelda with anything they produce established or otherwise.

I don't think Sony dreams of selling their system primarily to casuals that are extremely unpredictable and technically go to waste away your core install base that for fact purchases longer and stays loyal longer.

The 3DS sold below the DS and it's actually showing that they're still losing market share in fact the Nintendo switch sold below the 3DS and the Wii and the Wii U which shows it indeed is still losing market share.

The PlayStation 4 is out selling Microsoft and Nintendo platforms respectively so no I'm pretty positive so he doesn't want that trade-off.

Because of that stunt they pulled with the Wii Nintendo was struggling to maintain market share Sony is not they stuck with their core install base and there now the fastest selling console of all time so I'm pretty damn sure that's Tony doesn't want to be where Nintendo is I don't think one generation is it good enough trade-off for your company's entire future like I said ask the Wii U how amazing that generation was for that company LMAO! What are you talking about? Mario Kart, SM Galaxy 1,2. Zelda, Metroid, And MANY, MANY,MANY more sold MILLIONS of copies on Wii. Hell Mario Kart 8 on Wii U has sold over 5 million copies alone, and that is on Wii U!!!

To the topic at hand, yes it was genius. People know what the product is, and they want it! Stores can not keep them in stock, and I do not see the demand going away at any point in time soon. Many People, including Nintendo fans did not buy the Wii U. Nintendo is counting on that. So re-releases on Switch is going to be an easy cash cow, for certain games like MK8, and Super Smash Bros. The games sold VERY well on Wii U even with its small install base. Switch will see Millions of those games easily, and they are just ports with added features.

I have not bought one yet, and that is because I already have Wii U, and MK8, and I bought BOTW for it, such a great game. I am waiting for this fall when Mario and Skyrim come out. Cant wait, for those(never played Skyrim)! I have to say, I hope by then, Nintendo steps its game up on the App Store for it. I want things like I heart, and Netflix, not that I would use it to watch movies, but I would at least like the option. You never know when your going to have down time. The only time I can see mine not being docked, is if I were traveling, as I am not a hand held guy, I like the big screen and surround sound, LOL.

First off, this article has nothing to do with sales, the Wii one the last generation whether or not anyone wants to admit it. The assumption that Wii owners only bought Wii sports like games is embarrassing and assumptions and oversimplification like that makes me cringe. Your unwillingness to acknowledge that the Wii had some true gems and stand out games (yes even non mario ones) doesn't mean that that's all people played.

You talk about how Xbox and PS4 cater to "adult gamers" but one of the biggest games on the Xbox is Minecraft, and as for PS4 used to try to shill that wand game for kiddies with the playstation move. Fanboys like you need to realize that just because something isn't your preferred platform, it doesn't mean it was completely terrible.

Not every game needs to appeal to adults to be good, One of the best games of this generation, Rocket League is absolutely fun and skilled based and isn't even rated T. Yet so many generic shooters come out thinking they can throw out an M rating and hope to catch a few "mature" gamers.

You ask where's the Halo's and Uncharted but Halo is literally a game where you play as a space marine fighting aliens, not the most mature premise out there, and games like Splatoon probably take more time to master than Halo does.

Not to mention they have games like Breath of the Wild which blows Uncharted out of the water, as much as I love Uncharted, it's mostly a roller coaster ride. At least in BotW you feel like you're exploring as the player and crafting your own story.

I wasn't a massive fan of Wii but you can't say succes isn't measured in sales that's what everyone else does, sure it's not 100% on sales but the fact that Smash Bros, Skyward sword and Mario Galaxy 1 as well as 2 were all top notch fantastic games, sure just dance and Wii fit gave them the success but 100 million consoles sales is successful hence why only Sony have done it before and microsoft have never managed it, certainly won't be doing it this gen but that's successful right?
Mario Galaxy 1 will get voted in a top 100 games ever list for many years to come. Wii controls and all being as you still use the buttons same as Mario 64 so I never understand people moaning about motion controls that work perfectly and are barely used when 95% of the moveset is same as Mario 64.

Nintendo haven't stayed successful throughout the years by luck sure some years or systems have more success than others but their home consoles have been going downhill since SNES, N64 sold less Gamecube sold even less, Wii bucked the trend, Wii U was as you were back to even less sold, yet here they are still banging out the classics. Pretty genius in my eyes the games the consoles the hardware the originality the inventiveness, the sheer fact the majority of what they touch, thanks to some very special people within the company (Miyamoto for example)

They brought gaming back from the dead in the 80's and sure the console sales have been slowing going further and further downhill but Sega went under at the turn of the millennium when it's was a 2 horse race Sony come along and smash 100 million consoles a generation, even Microsoft want in on the act but Nintendo still chugging along smashing it in their own way long live Nintendo always got time for them alongside my PS4 and Xbox if they pull their finger out but sold my S if that's the improved XB1 launch model must have been awful as 4 months with an S and sold it for Switch. Not disappointed. Well apart from the fact I was done with my Xbox after 4 months and done all the exclusives they've released over 3/4 years yet Switch in first year will have more going on sure a lot of Wii u ports but great games will get a second chance and much deserved. Once the new games start coming through Xbox gonna really be looking slack on games.

As for Nintendo needing "mature" games, games are meant to be fun. Some people find blood and gore in games fun, others find gameplay and a good story fun. Nintendo has done fine for many years with their style of games I don't see a reason for them to change now. They can let 3rd party developers fill the "mature" genre if needed.

By the way, the Wii had some of the most violent games: Manhunt, No More Heroes, and Mad World come to mind.

Nintendo had 1 bad generation (Wii U) but still didnt lose money hand over fist like Sony did on the PS3 generation. Nintendo runs a very tight ship financially, hence having billions in the bank. No one is perfect. Who gets success every single time but the time don't half do bad sure they a bit behind in few senses online and making you chat through your phone, friend codes etc but in others like hardware ideas and ways we play even going back to shoulder buttons, analogue sticks all pretty basic and standard practice now but it wasn't before Nintendo smashed it out the park and had the balls to go for it. Sega D pad 3 face buttons same as nes original playstation d pad start select and 4 face buttons, sure they added shoulder buttons (did release after SNES after all) but until Nintendo went N64 let's use Analogue sticks did dual shock get released.
Nintendo get so much stick its unreal. They made gaming what it is today and the other follow and inspire to come up with some of the crazy (at the time) ideas that Nintendo come up with time and time again. That then become common practice.
Switch is really exciting System and it's premature but next system could be epic if they finally try go for some power and go head to head with ps5 and new Xbox after scorps.
However happy with my switch, 3ds Wii u, PS4 Vita and 360 until late 2019/2020 at the earliest Myself.

Nintendo has done a genius job at making consoles for selling Nintendo games. Everyone else need not apply. Nintendo's problem is that they're solely focused on themselves. They fail to realize that to succeed they need to help others make money on their console. They can't keep acting like 3rd parties should be grateful for the privilege of putting games on their system. This is how the Wii U went and... well, enough said. Switch is succeeding early because Zelda is that good. If Nintendo doesn't change in regards to other developers, they're going nowhere.

I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to debate ,the reality is the Nintendo switch is the third platform they released that is too weak to support a specific number of games that is not subjective, you don't need more time to realize that , that is simple fact the fact that Destiny 2, Battlefront II and Now Call of Duty World War II was not releasing on the switch is very much a characteristic we've seen from the last several generations with this company they haven't learned anything in there probably going to continue to lose market share because of those stupid choices

They might of officially dug their grave into never being able to outsell their competition because of those choices I mean you're talking about properties with Millions upon millions of Gamers that are experiencing on PlayStation and Xbox

what you don't understand is there not only losing market share to those consumers they're losing what I call mindshare, a consumer has played Assassin's Creed Mass Effect Call of Duty Watch Dogs what have you on a PlayStation or an Xbox, there for those properties are recognizable to that consumer, the controller layout they've become historic fans of it , actually means in the future when those sequels release those consumers will probably purchase the next Xbox or PlayStation 5 to play those games regardless if they're on Nintendo platforms or not because they've just the established 20 million users on somebody's franchises that grew up playing it on particular platforms

face it they already lost both fans have already established where they want to play those games and Nintendo has just solidified for another generation they will be absent from those Concepts , all they're doing is technically growing the installed base of PlayStation and Xbox Gamers that likely permanently will not leave those platforms

They understand the layout of the controller, their friends are on those platforms and they've already established an identity on those platforms.

Nintendo lost at market and they basically let it go because of their own ignorance with thinking that anybody would buy something Nintendo just because it says Nintendo on it well the numbers are clearly showing that's not a hundred percent correct.

So when the division 2, watch dogs 3 Call of Duty World War 3 Battlefront 3 what have you release do you honest-to-god believe that those fans are going to be looking to buy a Nintendo system? Jokingly even if Nintendo does release a Home console that is powerful enough to support those franchises do you honestly believe the people that I've spent the past several Generations playing those games will just completely ignore all their friends and the controller layout and buy a Nintendo system to play those games?

Nintendo gave away market share and now they're desperately scrambling to try to get it back the company is just too stupid to understand those fans are permanently lost they basically gave away the hardcore markets to Sony and Microsoft.

But it turns out that what the other consoles are doing is what gamers like and 75 million of them have said so by purchasing one of those other consoles. Yes, everything plays Netflix (except for Switch) but it turns out that in addition to playing games, people like that their consoles can do other things. I love that after playing something on my PS4, PS3, Vita, Wii, iPhone, random android tablet, or Fire TV, I can quickly switch over to watch something on Netflix or Hulu.

Each to their own and options are great but I just haven't got time in the day I've got a Virgin Tv subscription package that I pay for Netflix has been cancelled currently as not getting used. When not at work I like to Game if not at a concert/gig/festival... browsers etc are cool but to be honest I'm not interested in 95% of the other stuff on my consoles other than the store and what games I can play. Most TV's do Netflix so don't even need it in the consoles these days it's not that big a deal Netflix I can watch on my phone. Not that I do as it's cancelled for now summer is here and got enough games to get on with so when I get time to get on my consoles it's to play games. I also owned PS4 since day one so I'm still one of these other gamers Ruefrak I just don't sheep it up and play the yearly churns and go along with crowds or sales. Games consoles are for games first and foremost that's why I've sold my Xbox 1 as after 3-4 years it's still barely sinking in they need games it took me 4 months to get through all the top exclusives recently 4 years worth of games in 4 months either games are really short, not very good or just not many of them.

Exactly. I've been saying this for years. I see them as a AAA software developer thats dedicated to their new game idea. While developing that idea if they come to a conclusion that the current hardware they're developing on in some way limits their ability to realize their vision then they'll release new hardware that fits their games agenda. Their attitude toward 3rd parties is "Hey, look at our amazing new toy you can play Mario and Zelda on again, oh and by the way maybe you can make a game for this innovative medium too". It's not as if this in and of itself is a problem for me it's just that my main issue is that lately within the last 3 console releases they have completely bypassed the need to create a powerful system in order to set the stage for day one profit. This as well wouldn't be so bad if they at least charged a reasonable price for what they're trying to sell. Low powered cheap hardware that can pull off what we want without costing us much but premium game software will sell it at a premium price. Some call it genius, but I say outside of the software that soothes the burn the hardware is a rip off.

Yes but what exactly does that have to do with Nintendo's over a decade of mistakes? I mean you're talking about a company that just screwed up having a very simple online infrastructure on a system despite PlayStation 4 and Xbox One existing as perfect examples.

The switch isnt all that powerful but it is a handheld.. The strongest one at that. Plus all the different combinations to play and it being portable means more people will see it first hand.. Its no PS4 pro or Scorpio but i bet it gets some fantastic and unique games. Im very happy with the system and the eshop has some good games like blaster master 0.. The Switch is a great device although i wouldnt mind a bit more horsepower.. But hey, thats why i have the pro.. Nintendos biggest problem is their inability to listen to the fans.. We want a proper metroid game and the like... Hopefully it happens this time around.. Zelda was great (except the awful (voicework) but that was intended to be a wii u title.. "Genius" is the last word anyone would think of to describe Nintendo. They have been completely out of touch with what gamers want for many years now, and the Switch is just further evidence of that. Their main technique is to build the cheapest possible hardware, then throw in a gimmick to reel people in. Worked initially for the Wii, but once the fad fizzled out, that system completely died. Failed miserably for the Wii U, and will likely fail for the Switch.
