Scorpio Solves Xbox's Hardware Issue, but PlayStation's Software Supremacy Is Poised To Endure

Microsoft brought Xbox once again at the forefront of technology with Scorpio, but now it has a much tougher task ahead: crafting great games.

PlayStation remains ahead for the foreseeable future thanks to their strategy of first and second party titles, though Microsoft has lots of great IPs worth reviving.

Microsoft has 212 indie games available on the Xbox One, 91 of which are exclusive.

I think the Scorpio is great as a high end console. It will offer choice for those who can afford it which is great. It will likely be successful even but it won't all of a sudden result it massive sales. They are quite late at this juncture

Phil shouldn't release games for the sake of releasing games. He needs to invest in new IP, open/acquire another 2 studios and give them the time they need to fully devlop it, hell maybe bring back an old IP like Kameo or Crimson Skies. But none of that is gonna happen over night, meanwhile everyone is gonna moan about them not releasing new exclusives right now. They need to release quality games.

When you look at 360, MS moves show they had no real interest in even making new series.

Epic games Gears Of War..., MS didn't own the IP, they didn't not create this game, again they didn't own the IP, didn't own the studio.......

Bioware's Mass Effect, MS didn't own the IP, yet KNEW Mass Effect was going to be a 3 part game, in which they didn't own the IP, didn't own the studio.......

So what it tells me, is MS had no real concept of making ANYTHING NEW GROUND UP BY THEIR TEAMS.

If MS says no to Gears and Mass Effect,

Gears likely gets published by Epic games on many platforms
Mass Effect gets published else where on many platforms etc.

So this alone tells you those games on 360 are by HAPPENSTANCE, MS didn't one day go to them and say they had an idea, MS never owned those IPs in the first place.

Nobody wants games upon games if they are not good games. Exercising some quality control isn't necessarily a bad thing. If scalebound looked like it would be a fun game and review well do you think ms would have canceled it? There is obviously more to the story than we're aware of.

I think they will revive some of those cancelled games and reintroduce them for the scorpio. At least thats what im hoping they do. I have been avoiding microsoft consoles since the whole rrod issue that affected so many of my friends. If they knock the scorpio out of the park, start supporting their games properly and bring back some of the cancelled games that i was getting interested in i may end up purchasing one. But, probably wont happen bc microsoft has been disappointing me for the last several years now.

I believe it's the opposite. I believe the vast majority of gamers only care about the multi's. I've said this in many threads on here. The COD/Madden/Destiny players of the world make up a larger number of gamers than those of us on N4G. Come July if we have visual proof that the Scorpio plays those that much better and at 60fps at all times it'll become the must have.

Exclusives aren't the reason Sony is on top. The biggest reason are 3rd party games and PS being the definitive place to play these games. Right now the household console for casuals is the PS4. Exclusives play a role, but they aren't the biggest reason why Sony's sold 60 mil units.

Nope. Multipltorm gamers like in those specific instance pick the platform their friends are on. That would be the PS4 right now. There will be literally zero people on the Scorpio before launch.

Other than the above. Gamers is go for price over weather they can see a few extra pixels.

Heck game selection would even come before performance of multi-plat games.

Never heard of anyone picking a platform because one mutiplat has better performance than the other.

I have heard about picking which multi-platform version to choose though if they already have mutiple platforms.

Well with Sony dominating the generation sales wise, I see them in no rush to start the generation again. Assuming the PS5 and Xbox Two are completely new systems and not just another iteration on the existing consoles which is what Scorpio and Pro are. Both continue with the same GPU and CPU architecture to maintain compatibility. At least that's not what I want. So I reckon we won't see a proper next generation till 2021.

Well I agree with fox.
Sure Ps4 is selling like hotcakes still, but why would Pro and scorpio be reasons for next gen to be pushed back, in the end developers still have to design a game to the standards of the base systems limiting the pro and scorpio in what they are allowed to do. its still XO and Ps4 games just scaled up with a touch up here and there the limitations of the base systems will hinder the refreshed ones.
And the Base systems were underpowered back in 2013, and the refreshes doesnt change that.
And Pro is also underpowered in the grand scheme of things and While Scorpio will be more powerful its still not that good I mean yeah sure 6 TF is kind of a decent amount of power, but it has been 4 years and it can run XO games that already ran in 1080p it can run in 4K. Games designed to run 900-1080p on a underpowered 1.2Tflop system from 4 years back now to be rendered in 4K while otherwise looking pretty much the same with a better texture here and there...

Developers will want more power and want it without restrictions of half a decade old hardware, Sony want to sell more hardware and even if Ps5 releases late next year ps4 will still have exclusives for probably a another 1-2 years after that and probably third party support for way longer. Ps2 didnt stop selling because Ps3 came out, God of war 2 anyone? heck ps1 even had games and didnt stop selling after ps2 came out.

I fail to see how the refreshes justify not making next gen happen sooner rather than later when the base systems dictate how games are designed and hinder the updated systems as the games have to be the same experience and perform satisfactory on these base systems.

If Scorpio suddenly became an exclusive platform sure it could do allright and it would be reasons for MS not to make a another more powerful systems for a another few years, but all it does is play Xbox one games, it doesnt have real exclusives. Its still current gen, it doesnt undo most of the limitations of current gen and gamers and developers have been vocal about how underpowered the base systems are, pro and scorpio are like fancy optional band aids, they dont fix the broken bone. they look nice and stop the bleeding making you feel better. all the Scorpio hype I think is going to dissapoint a lot of people anticipating a meaningful leap in visuals. All the power in the world doesnt change the fact it is only running Xbox one games.

PS4 will still outsell everything and Scorpio unless it is cheap you can expect the vanilla S unit to outsell it easily. Generally other than the hardcore crowd price I find is the most important factor I find for most customers and where their friends are playing.

MS has done great on all fronts of platform features, cloud support, compatibility and now hardware support. The last vestige and safe haven for Sony is games, but E3 is around the corner.

I think we are about to get the golden age gaming! Lots of software for Playstation, and Xbox has never looked better poised with lots of games this E3. Even PC is set to get some goodness from Xbox Play Anywhere titles as well.

But before buying those multiplats you have to choose a console to play them on. If you're a PC gamer, would you choose a console that has it's entire library available on PC or do you the console that has games that cannot be played on any other platform?

If you already have a PS4/PS4 Pro the only compelling reason to buy a Scorpio are the games made exclusive to Xbox One/PC. We all know that pool of potential customers is going to extremely shallow because those games are average to slightly above average at best.

Then you have those who "only" own a Nintendo Switch, another shallow pool of customers.

Then there's that one nagging point, PRICE.

Scorpio is not going to be $399, it's not going to be $499. Microsoft charges $150 for an "Elite Controller." How much do you think they're going to charge for an "Elite Console?" Scorpio won't even outsell the Xbox One S so how in the world do some of you expect it to outsell the PS4?

I'm sure it will. Spencer seems very aware that Xbox needs varied software. The problem is Microsoft acknowledges the issue but hasn't really done anything to change the narrative. Ideally, we'll see some change come E3.

I should also add that Microsoft isn't really willing to take risks with first party titles. It's unfortunate, but that's how it is. They're missing a creative Media Molecule - esque studio that defies comfort zones and a Naughty Dog rival that takes great narratives and spins an incredibly immersive world. Those are just two examples. Personally, Sony Japan is my favorite first party studio and Microsoft doesn't have anything to counter that. They're actually most comparable to Nintendo games with Microsoft being left out of that conversation.

Easy...out of that entire list through 2018 you posted, there are MORE X1 exclusives THIS year that I "must play" Your list comes down to (Horizon), Days, Gone, God of War, and maybe TLoU2....THIS YEAR on X1 I "Must Play" Below, Ashen, Tacoma, Cuphead, State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves, and Crackdown 3...plus I'll be playing all my VR and Multi-Plat games on Scorpio where the performance is worlds better on every level. The truth is with how many great games there are even without excluisves....I already don't have enough time for all the games I really want to play....95% of the stuff you have listed there doesn't have enough interest to do anything to displace anything already on my list. If anything, that list makes things look more desperate. Another thing I notice about PS exclusives that look good, they are all primarily SP narratives that last like 15-20 hours then you're done and never have to play again...the MS exclusives offer a lot more bang for the buck. I'll probably spend more time playing any ONE of Crackdown 3, Sea of Thieves or State of Decay 2 THIS year than ALL of the PS exclusives I wanna play combined. It's going to be very interesting to see if MS can recapture the casual crowd. Making Xbox the place to play CoD, BF, Madden, Destiny 2, etc would be big for MS. That's their only chance imo, they just don't have the exclusives to compete with Sony on that front, but the funny thing is they don't need to. Casuals make up the majority of the market and ultimately end up steering a company to victory. As great as Sony's exclusives are if they were like Nintendo and only had their first party lineup to rely upon, they'd be in a similar boat as Nintendo.

It's going to be very interesting to see if MS can recapture the casual crowd. Making Xbox the place to play CoD, BF, Madden, Destiny 2, etc would be big for MS.

If they can price it at a reasonable amount, and it's advantages over the pro are obvious then I don't see why casuals wouldn't bite on it. Sony can't do that with their $400 PS4P. MS can't even do that with their bargain basement $200(at times) X1 console. So it's highly unlikely that they'll do it with a $500(or up) console. Particularly since Sony has exclusive deals with COD and Destiny.

Problem with those two particular games helping MS is that Sony has the marketing rights to make it the place to play the game. The casuals you speak of don't keep up enough to really pay attention enough to know if the competition is a better experience....and they don't really even care most of the time.

Madden MS might be able to capture something from, but the NFL has pretty strict rules about exclusive content with the franchise. Battlefield I'm not sure where that stands, but I do believe Sony has something going with Star Wars: BF. Other than that, I don't keep track of most of those kinds of games myself, so if I'm wrong on something I apoligize....but I do know Sony has some pretty strong marketing deals right now.

I'm primarily a Xbox gamer and I use my ps4 for exclusives because sure we all know Sony is pretty damn good at making them but I'm not getting the whole narrative that Ms has no games. Sure they don't have as many as Sony does but instead of being excited for the possibilites of what's to come. Most people here seem to genuinely want Ms to fail. I can't understand this logic at all. All 3 companies need to do well for us gamers to reap the benefits of healthy competition. Ms got drilled for inferior hardware. The Scorpio fixes that. Not silly but fact and their technical achievements are second to none. Xbox games avg mid 70 to low 80 while PS4 games avg mid 80 to low 90. That in itself is defining and significant.

I am not denying that the PS exclusives both score good and look incredible. But they are not defining the gaming landscape. And by that I mean by what people actually buy and play the most.

Top 10 sold games of 2016 has zero PlayStation exclusives. All third party multiplatform games. Most sold games so far in 2017 are...surprise...third party multiplatform games. With Ghost Recon Wildlands being the fastest selling game so far this year.

Third party multiplatform games is what is defining the gaming landscape.

Sonic the Hedgehog was a defining moment for side scroll platform.

WOW was a defining moment for MMORPG
FF7 was a defining moment for RPGs
The first Tomb Raider was a defining moment not only because of a female lead but for the direction it took the TPS action adventure.

Vanilla systems always outsell the premium systems. That's 8 years of experience selling games at EB Games. There has NEVER been a single year where the highest price console has ever outsold its lower priced version. If you have some silly notion the Scorpio is going to change that you should dispel that thought. The vanilla S unit will easily outsell Scorpio. At launch it will have a month maybe 2 of good sales then drop off a cliff. Most people will buy the system that is cheaper then the next deciding factor is where their friends are playing then exclusives are the next factor, because for all intensive purposes if the games perform roughly the same it won't matter.

Have fun paying the same price for Destiny on Xbox as I pay for PlayStation and getting less of a game. PlayStation will have exclusive exotics and maps that won't be on Xbox or PC for at least two years. Not to mention a much larger player base on PS4.

I don't own an Xbox and won't be shelling out for a Scorpio, but this will definitely be the first year I watch Microsoft's stage at E3, for sure! Hardware doesn't convince me what to own, I have stuck with Playstation for each generation because of the games and PS4 was the first generation I owned from day one of release. Scorpio has delivered on the hardware, but they need to deliver on what they can exclusively bring from their first party, for me to make the jump to owning both consoles. I can't justify a lot of money for owning a better looking third party game, that's madness. I look forward to seeing some surprises come E3. Fingers crossed cause competition is good.

Sorry to break it to you but facts are facts.

If the same amount of xb1's were sold as the ps4's, the xb1 software units would outsell ps4 software units by about 2.25 to 1.

If the Scorpio sells well and has the same software attachment rate as the xb1, then the ps4pro is dead in water.

As a lifelong gamer since before any of these consoles existed...and owner of all of the big three for every gen...this is MASSIVELY over-stated. Yes, Sony has some great exclusives, but not NEARLY as dominant as many would have you believe. A common trick is that people will compare ALL KNOWN PS exclusives vs MS's 2017 exclusives. More than that, most PS exclusives are games that will rate well, but no one will play them. This year is probably MS's most drought year according to some...and still, this year, there are more "Must play" games on X1 for me than on any other console. Horizon was great, but I doubt I'll play another PS exclusive game until God of War or Days Gone...whenever those come out. This year on X1 I'll be playing Sea of Thieves, Crackdown 3, Tacoma, Ashen, Below, Cuphead (and Phantom Dust most likely as I missed it the first time around). Even on Switch there are more "must have" games to play than on PS this year....Zelda and Mario Oddessey. This is clearly an agenda pushed by die-hard son-only fans.

Still Sony was smart to slap a turbo charger on a old block and squeeze every ounce of power they could from the older current hardware..... Yes I am speaking metaphorically. Look Sony doesn't have the Supersport car of hardware but its still sports car and doing it with much less expensive mass produce parts.....

Microsoft is coming in with the sleeker more upscale machine appealing to a more sophisticated gaming crowd and there is a market for it. The question you will ask yourself is if it is worth your wallet?

Sony will make that question even harder because by using older hardware to achieve near 4K/4K gaming; Sony can run sales and deals against Microsoft's Xbox Scorpio (or whatever it ends up being called) that Microsoft just can't match without Sony hurting their bottom line to much. Sony could easily pitch the PS4 PRO at $300 and probably still not lose any money or sleep over the price drop.

Microsoft has got a long battle ahead on both the hardware and software side but again there is a market for it just like there is a market for Nintendo Switch type user/players.
