Microsoft on why Xbox One doesn't need a No Man's Sky equivalent

Eurogamer:
The ID@Xbox self-publishing program might be Xbox One's crowning glory at the time of writing, boasting 450 titles that have notched up well over a billion hours of play, but it could do with a crown jewel. The service has seen its share of critical darlings, from Superhot to Inside, but many of its best games are multiplatform, and many of its "exclusives" appear on PCs as well - part of a much-vaunted push towards device agnosticism that often feels like it's more in the service of Windows 10 than Xbox.

Yeah, Xbox doesn't need a No Man's Sky equivalent, it has a better one, Elite Dangerous, which albeit a bit limited is a much better game.... What it needs are good games comparable to Persona 5, Horizon Zero Dawn, Yakuza 0, Nioh etc. I mean, there has to be a reason why Square Enix/Platinum deicided to release Nier Automata on PC and PS4 and not on Xbox One, and that reason sure as hell is not because of Sony signing a deal to keep it console exclusive, it's because they didn't see a potential in the market.... And from personally playing Nier Automata, I can say that Xbox owners are missing out on a lot. Being a PC gamer, I really feel bad for people who only own an Xbox

mcstorm2614d ago

I think with Scorpio this may change as the contract on bringing the game to both consoles not just one will mean that they use the universal app which means putting it on all 3 consoles will be easy and less of a cost to do so we may see more games come from pc to Xbox but only time will tell on that one.

TheOptimist2614d ago

I hope that Microsoft does that.... I don't want monopoly of Sony in the market, and Microsoft can surely get first party studios to make games for their platform because, overall as a company, they are much bigger financially.

GtR35olution2614d ago

Its funny to me to see a lot of fanat-X saying they dont need certain games when they have such slim pickings which makes things worse imo. The xbox one is suffering because it has very few games to choose fromwhen youre takking about exclusive titles. Fanat-X talks so much about new controllers and scorpio but there wont be any exclusive titles to play

mcstorm2614d ago

@TheOptimist I agree. We don't know what will and wont happen but just need to wait and see.

@GtR35olution I see what you are saying but again we don't know what will and wont happen. It also depends on what games your into to if the ps4 or xbox one is better for your needs for me I love my racing games and the xbox is the better console for this with its current offerings.

ShadowKnight2614d ago

Ummm it's been 4 years since the Xbox one was release. I'm tired of a wait and see approach. They should've been had exclusive games

JackBNimble2614d ago

Isn't elite dangerous coming to ps4 soon anyway? I thought No man Sky was a timed exclusive coming xb1 after 1 year.

I hope elite dangerous does come to ps4.

Mr Pumblechook2614d ago

Xbox Defence Force article. It's this attitude from Phil Spencer regarding third party games that has left the Xbox One in 2017 lacking the breadth of titles that PS4 has.

mcstorm2614d ago

I think people also have short memories in the tech world. Both the ps3 and ps4 started out slow in its life with exclusives where the 360 and Xbox one both had a lot at the start but as it got to the end lost its way. This is one thing Microsoft and Sony need to work on. I see the Scorpio refreshing the Xbox one game collection as games have to be made for both going forward but Microsoft also need to work at keeping them coming all year long and all the way through the gen. Sony need to take more care in pushing their new tech when it comes out. Look at the ps4 pro and psvr for example not much is pushing them at the moment but I'm sure in 12 to 18 months it will come or they will end up like ps move did. For me none of the 3 are perfect in the industry all have + and - sides but it's up to them all to correct the bits they do wrong and keep the things they do right going to. At the end of the day i don't want a gaming industry with one console i want Nintendo Microsoft and Sony to all do well to all push each other.

Ceaser98573612613d ago

If you think Scorpio gonna change anything then you're delusional. With Play anywhere features games have options and they would prefer sticking. Also the console wont come cheap.

"Microsoft can surely get first party studios to make games for their platform because, overall as a company, they are much bigger financially."

True but they don't because MS prolly doesn't want to take the risk with Xbox Brand.

how do you know that sony did not pay money for the exclusivity? after all, that is how exclusivity-deals are working.

micky$oft just lost their grip after their 360 era where they made every second major game a timed exclusive. at least it felt that way. in the meantime they focused on everything else but gaming. now their production teams are gone and new ones too expensive to build up or buy.

what we are left with is a gaming console that just so happens to also play games. but games are still not their core feature as it seems. that is by the way the reason i don't own an xbone. i'd like to, but why? no incentive. scorpio? the same. i dont need a mee-too product in my house.

TheOptimist2614d ago

Because the director himself has said that the game was not made for Xbox One due to budget restrictions..... He said that if the game sold well, there willbe a Xbox version and even remasters of the Drakengard and Nier games for all current gen consoles.

I dunno about the rest, I never bought a 360

TheCommentator2614d ago

Yep, Optimist, that's what he said to me at the Gamestop managers conference 4(?) years ago too. He also said that because the team was smaller, they wanted to focus on one console at a time to ensure the game was the best it could be.

LordJamar2614d ago

cant take anything you say seriously doing the $ sign

Automatic792614d ago (Edited 2614d ago )

I agree Elite Dangerous is fantastic.

XStation4pio_Pro2614d ago (Edited 2614d ago )

xbox doesn't need NMS because it was a failure. that said, i'm pretty confident we are going to see more from MS in the near future. I know for a fact Scorpio has a lot of developers excited for the hardware and i think MS actually has a good foundation to build on going forward.

As an owner of an xbox one s (and a ps4 pro) i will say that there isn't a shortage of games on xbox. There are less exclusives than on ps4, yes this is true, its also true that they need more 1st (technically 2nd) party studios to build new IP. That doesn't mean there aren't games to play though. of both consoles i own, about 3-4 are exclusives on each respective system... but I have about 16 games for xbox and about 12 for ps4. exclusives are a minority of the games I buy. Not because i have anything against them, but must have exclusives are fairly rare and which ones are must-haves are completely subjective to every person. For example - I love racing. Love racing games. The ps4 has very little to offer for good quality racing sims, right this minute, so I play a lot of Forza MS on xb1 because its great. and for less sim like stuff theres Forza Horizons, which I'm sorry is substantially better as a game than drive club. The xbox doesn't have a great new action rpg like Horizon Zero Dawn, so I play it on ps4. BUT I don't like JRPGs. could care less - so having all of those on ps4 is irrelevant to me and MS not having many, is a non-issue.

anyway don't feel sorry for me having an xbox because its been great and it gets plenty of use. both of my consoles do. i feel the internet makes things seem way worse than they are.

donthate2614d ago

No Man's Sky was a flop and I don't think any platform needs it.

Yohshida2614d ago

How do you know they didn't have a Deal? They constantly shell out deals for indies we don't know about to have the game exclusive for 1 Year.

I talked to the devs behind Tricky Towers at Gamescom last Year and even they got a Deal with Sony to SPECIFICALLY not release it on X1 for 1 Year. It releases on August 2. 2016 and will release at the same date for X1 in 2017. Did they ever told us that they signed a deal? Nope.

TheOptimist2614d ago

I don't see a reason as to why Squaer Enix will keep it from Xbox One... Here is the link that tells the reason
http://www.express.co.uk/en...

rainslacker2613d ago

Not sure this game was ever intended for console at it's reveal. It was only confirmed for PC. Sony ended up publishing the PS4 version, and they probably did some work on making it on the system. Would have to go through the credits to see if that's the case.

Sony did spend some money to Hello Games after their office flooded, and maybe part of that was some sort of deal, or it just greased the wheels to allow Sony to publish the console version.

Otherwise, yeah, deals like this happen a lot. We never hear about it unless it's with the high profile IP's. It's not really just one company doing it, but is standard operating practice in the industry.

LordJamar2614d ago

fuck japan and Japanese devs they proven time and time they dont care about xbox, were wasting time and money on jap devs who dont give a shit about xbox they have proved that go ahead and down vote me but its true you know it is

Ceaser98573612613d ago

Lucky i have both PS4 Pro and Xbox one... No complains , no whining.

TheOptimist
You're 100% right. Xbox one shouldn't always rely on Forza, Halo and Gears. I believe the brand Xbox has a lot of potential and they should learn to take the risk of making/investing on making IP. Quantum Break was average the game had alot of potential. Scalebound looked amazing shame! that it had to get cancelled. But i hope this doesn't stop Xbox brand to push forward. I am happy to learn playground games is working on an open world game and its not Forza. Hope 343, Coalition does something different.

So it's an exclusive game if its on PlayStation and PC, but not if its on Xbox and PC? How can you say they need a indie exclusive like No Man's Sky, which was on PC also, and then say MS need exclusives that aren't on PC?

Goldby2614d ago

We'll Pc and Windows 10 are 2 different platforms now. and close to every game that is available on Xbox is also available on PC eiother through steam or Win10 store with Playanywhere.

Hellblade for example is a console exclsuive, thats releasing on steam and ps4. but not Windows 10 and Xbox.

CocoaBrother2614d ago

Quote from the article: "The service has seen its share of critical darlings, from Superhot to Inside, but many of its best games are multiplatform, and many of its "exclusives" appear on PCs as well"

Followed by this: "There seems pressing need for a killer app of some sort, a phenomenon on par with the PS4's No Man's Sky to electrify the console's reputation as a platform for adventurous new IPs"

No Man's Sky is also on PC so why tout it as a PS4 exclusive in this article while blasting Microsoft for having games available on both console and PC?

Goldby2614d ago

umm. may eb the play anywhere part of the xbox exclsuivces nows. im not really sure. NMS is technically an ps4 exclsuive in the sense of consoles

XXanderXX2614d ago

Think Hellblade is Timed only on console and every where you look has it also arriving on PC,W10

Goldby2614d ago

@Xxander

They have never stated Win 10. its PS4 and PC (aka steam)
January 8th Ninja Theory announced the PC version. but never stated anything about Windows 10.

Please learn the difference between the two computer platforms

TheCommentator2614d ago

Hey, Goldby, take this with you when you leave... 🥅 ...it's getting in the way of rational conversation.

Goldby2614d ago

@commentator,

Take what, its just a square.
everything i have stated about Hellblade is correct. its not my issue when XXanderXX is bring false information into the mix

itsmebryan2614d ago

Are you batty and so much of a fanboy that you would say something so stupid? Steam is for Windows 7,8, and 10 PCs. You must not have a computer to say that games are released on Steam are not released on Windows 10. Smh

Goldby2613d ago

@itsmebryan

im not talking about the OS Windows 10, but the Windows 10 store. you knwo the one thats only available on Windows 10 devices.

Hellblade is releasing on Steam which can be used on a windows 10 device but not sold through windows 10 store. aka to play it you need either a pc or a ps4. its not windows 10 and x box games, but pc and ps4.

Learn the differnce with the storefronts. thats what people talk about when they talk about win 10. not the os...

nicsaysdie2614d ago (Edited 2614d ago )

Let me clear this up. Hell blade will release on ps4 and pc through steam. When someone says it isn't releasing on win10 they mean that in fact it will not be purchasable through the windows store. What this means is that you can buy it through steam and play it on Windows 10, but also could buy it through steam or possibly gog and play it on a pc using Linux, or an android based system, or a mac. However if you only have a win 10 pc without steam you would not be able to purchase/play the game. Not that I think the majority wouldn't have steam. There is however a distinction. You can buy the game and play it on a computer with the OS of your choosing. In short none of the sales will contribute to Microsoft's market share of the game sales as you can not buy it through Microsoft directly. And just using Windows 10 as an operating system does not contribute to sales figures for Microsoft. All sales will contribute to sony's bottom line, none will contribute to Microsoft's. Hope that helps.

rainslacker2613d ago

I can say that no console really "needs" any game, or a game that is similar to it.

Need is a strong word.

Nice to have though......sure....because who really wouldn't want more games to choose from, even if those games don't appeal to them.

2614d ago
annoyedgamer2614d ago

That Astoneer game shows promise.

NicSage2614d ago

XXanderXX2614d ago

No ID@Xbox is doing great it don't need a crown especially if it turns out to be something like the mentioned game

XXanderXX2614d ago (Edited 2614d ago )

@Goldby I stand corrected, though all this can change .
knowing that now means I will be getting it on PC so to enjoy all the hard work brought to this game by the studio.

XXanderXX2614d ago (Edited 2614d ago )

That's right here's hoping its released on W10 (HS) seeing how NT are the developer and publisher and want all control to themselves which is awesome .

Goldby2614d ago

I hope you enjoy the game,
i'm really looking forward to the awareness it will bring about mental health.
plus its a NT game so you cant go wrong

XXanderXX2614d ago (Edited 2614d ago )

@Goldby if it draws on matters of this kind through out the game

Psychosis is an abnormal condition of the mind that involves a "loss of contact with reality". People experiencing psychosis may exhibit personality changes and thought disorder. Depending on its severity, this may be accompanied by unusual or bizarre behavior, as well as difficulty with social interaction and impairment in carrying out daily life activities.

Will definitely use a steam account to experience it day one just to say how they did so .

Goldby2613d ago

@XXanderXX

have you been following the developer diaries. its very interesting how they are going about the psychosis, PTSD and other mental health issues.

From focusing on Patterns in the "real world" and proper 3d audio for the voices she hears. to the camera set up to make the character feel even smaller compared to her enemies.

i'm no happy this game is indie so that no big wigs get the final say on how to portray mental health.

No Man's Sky Adrift Expedition Trailer

Introducing..No Man's Sky: Adrift.A lot has changed in the years since No Man’s Sky released.

No Man's Sky Is Easily One Of Gaming's Greatest Comeback Stories

Despite No Man Sky's rocky launch, Hello Games managed to turn it into one of the best space exploration RPGs out there.

darksky24d ago

HG could have stopped after making 3-4 updates and the debt would have been paid to those why are crying about paying full price. However, they have continously provided free updates for the last 6-7 years. No other developer in hostory has ever done this and probably never will.
There are many AAA games that disappointed but the devs normally move on or close the studio rather than fix the game.

-Foxtrot25d ago

I hate the whole concept of "comeback story" because at the end of the day it doesn't remove the core issue we had in the first place, that we were lied to, it was disappointing and it launched with bare content to what was promised for years.

Any bad game can have a comeback story if it's supported enough after launch but for me if you launch in a terrible state then you had your chance. I can applaud you for what you've done after but at the end of the day there's not much of a choice since most gamers would blank your next product if you ditched your last game so fast, it's not about repairing the game but spending your time repairing gamers trust before you launch your next product otherwise it would be dead on arrival.

With these stories and the games being updated, the only way is up most of the time so of course it's going to improve the game and feel better over all, getting better and better as time passes. No Mans Sky, Sea of Thieves, Fallout 76 etc but then you have games like Anthem, Suicide Squad, Redfall and The Avengers where the devs just clearly moved on, now if they have another product people won't be as exited for it, I mean hell Guardians of the Galaxy was a great game but because of the Avengers it didn't help its sales since people were obviously still sour at that point.

I still think despite the improvements to games like No Mans Sky and Cyberpunk along with being better now overall the games are still not up there to what was promised and hyped as for years.

If we keep celebrating these “comeback stories” then unfortunately it only strongly supports the concept that these studios / publishers can continue to push half arsed broken products out for the sake of quick sales instead of waiting until they are fully finished. We need to condemn this awful behaviour or sadly we lose all voice and power as consumers.

Sonic188125d ago (Edited 25d ago )

I feel the same way about Cyberpunk 2077. I'm glad you mentioned that. I'm not a fan of comeback stories as well. But No man sky developer was a small indie team compared to CDPR. It's worse when it's coming from a AAA developer

Nacho_Z25d ago

"Any bad game can have a comeback story if it's supported enough after launch"

You make it sound so simple and easy. It's not. After release Hello Games poured countless hours into getting their game closer to what they originally wanted, without charging a penny to anyone. That's not normal.

The reason NMS and HG are held in such high esteem and calling them liars is a weak stance is the amount of work they've put into it, for free. They're not chasing a quick buck, they've dedicated their lives over the last few years to giving their fans the game everyone wanted.

-Foxtrot25d ago (Edited 24d ago )

They are liars though...

We are not revising history here, I'm sorry but we're not

They built this game up for years and they launched it knowing full well it wasn't up to scratch to what they originally showed off or hyped it up to be.

"They're not chasing a quick buck, they've dedicated their lives over the last few years to giving their fans the game everyone wanted"

And like I said above most of that comes from the fact that if they had just moved on straight away nobody would have supported their next game. They've washed most of that sour taste away after supporting No Mans Sky so now they are doing a new game which more people feel like they can support and get excited for.

Anyway how can you say "You make it sound so simple and easy. It's not" and then make the point that "Hello Games poured countless hours into getting their game closer to what they originally wanted, without charging a penny to anyone"

This means that if a small team like this can turn a game around then big AAA games like Suicide Squad, Redfall, Anthem and the like should have been able to do it no problem, oh but that's right they didn't want to put the time or effort into it. They can do it but some people just decide not to.

Blad3runner0024d ago (Edited 24d ago )

"You make it sound so simple and easy. It's not. After release Hello Games poured countless hours into getting their game closer to what they originally wanted, without charging a penny to anyone. That's not normal."

People paid for the game at launch and got lied to. Now the game is what it SHOULD have been from the start (what people paid for) and we should be happy they aren't charging EXTRA? Its free because people ALREADY paid for the game at launch.

People PAID for what the game is in its current state (what it should have been at launch), not what it was when it released. Charging people AGAIN would result in even more backlash.

anast24d ago

"You make it sound so simple and easy. It's not. After release Hello Games poured countless hours into getting their game closer to what they originally wanted, without charging a penny to anyone. That's not normal."

They already charged for the full price game. All of that work is owed because it was already paid for.

JackBNimble24d ago

Fox ... sure HG made a huge mistake, but they have also done more then any development team that I have seen to fix the problem and go way beyond in supporting the game. And every update has been free, so I don't really get why you are holding on to this grudge.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 24d ago
milohighclub24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

Whatever happened at launch is in the past. By your logic they could have supported it for a year got it to the project they promised then stopped but they didn't. They're still supporting it to this they, they've released more content post than pretty much any game I can think off. More than most MMOs. They didn't have to go this far but they have and don't have any plans of stopping. All for free too.
Yeah they had a shit launch and they've apologised, learned and more than made up for it. I was pissed off at them at launch, but not petty enough to keep slandering them 7 years later.
You have much bigger studios releasing half assed games and fixing it later or even worse not even bothering.

anast24d ago

The DLC costs money. But yeah, people are hanging on to this one longer because of their previous reputation.

TheCaptainKuchiki24d ago

And it doesn't change the fact that the game is a boring procedurally generated environment in which your repeat the same actions over and over again with no real purpose. I hate when they say that the game became good.

I really enjoyed it at launch and had every trophy by August 2016.

The experience I had is no longer in the game: It was just me and my ship. It was a survival game and the feeling of loneliness in the universe was pervasive. There was no way to ruin too far from your ship and, in an emergency, you grenaded a hole in the ground to survive.

I miss that aspect, but since then, I love what they've done.
