Unappreciated game mechanics: Shadow Of The Colossus

Despite it releasing in 2005, there are lessons that could be learned from this game and applied to many modern games.

I want to reiterate that games such as God of War don't really take mechanical inspiration from SotC, as you are not able to freely climb all over the bosses and move freely around in the same environment.

The reason I mention this, is that some people criticised it for not mentioning games such as God of War.

I don't think it's fair to say SotC's climbing is "unappreciated"

Perhaps a more accurate term would have been "underused". The idea is that since the mechanic hasn't been used much outside of it it doesn't get the appreciation it deserves. Especially if going by "imitation being the sincerest form of flattery".

i understand the authors frustration i'm not the best at parrying in games. not that i can't complete a game that requires it but it is a definite harder thing for me than other kinds of techniques in games. which might be the main reason it's so heavily added in games nowadays. want to make your game challenging without having to do a lot of work? just add a parry boss. (what i mean by parry boss is a boss you have to beat by parrying such that their attacks will kill you otherwise)

I always think it's fine as long as such games also have the roll/dodge panic button. But I understand the will to parry, it seems so cinematic in a fight when you pull it off.
