Molyneux: 'FFVII, that to me defined the genre'

Speaking to VideoGamer.com earlier this week, Lionhead founder Peter Molyneux has revealed that he considers Square's Final Fantasy VII to be the game that defined the RPG genre.

"I always remember back to Final Fantasy VII, when I first played FFVII, that to me defined the genre," he said when talking about the PS3 and if it has had any defining titles. "Those were the 'oh my god' moments, I don't believe they exist. I haven't seen many of those on the PS3."

I wonder if he even owns PS3, this is only his MS smack talk. I recomend him to play MGS4 there is plenty of OH my F*****G GOD moments. Uncharted is not " bad" either. Just saying mr. i have opinion on everyhing.
So do i Fab 2 will such.....

Even though I don't necessarily agree with him wholeheartedly, I can see and respect where he's coming from. Part of it might be that JRPGs have been very slow coming to the PS3. Another part of it would be that gamers are waiting for some revolutionary new gameplay experiences with the current-generation of consoles, and I do agree that we don't see many things that "wow" us on a gameplay level nowadays. A lot of today's games are graphical updates and tweaks on the same formulas+franchises, over and over. Maybe it's also because we're more jaded as gamers than ever before and it's harder to impress us with something new. Publishers would rather go with the low-risk, tried-and-true formulas for the greatest monetary returns.

If there are none on PS3 (although I disagree, play MGS4, Uncharted), there is no way there is any on 360.

Richdad5696d ago (Edited 5696d ago )

the games you mentioned Uncharted and MGS4 are definitely better looking but by a small margin and they along with Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 have graphical edge but there will be equal quality visuals in 360 soon and I would not be surprised to see that a 360 game or multiplatform game beats Killzone 2 visually after 6 months after its release.

The reason is simple most 360 games Halo 3, Mass Effect or Gears where being made from 2005 so didnt had the new technology to push polygons and texture they where doing all things on 512MB of Ram,whole level was loaded on it but still they looked good but now those limits are dead so far much better graphics with more details and huge levels than before are possible.

DA_SHREDDER5697d ago

Peter honestly doesn't know what he's talking about.

hay5697d ago (Edited 5697d ago )

I think he's a bit delusional. When I personally love FF7, it's definetly my favourite jRPG but I think FF6 is better game. Despite being super deformed it has really mature moments in it. Those who played it will know what I'm talking about. And speaking of PS3 'oh my god' moments...

Every second scene in MGS4, first launch of GT5, awesome sound when driving with in-car camera in GT5, that artistic and mysterious "something" in Folklore(despite really repetitive gameplay), first race in Ridge Racer 7, music score in Uncharted, wet Nate, Resistance co-op where we actually could use some tactics instead of brainless pacification, DVD upscaling made me say wow instead of 'omigod' but I'll count it also. Jokes in R&C and grinding puzzles in Quest for Boote also made me say wow, but memorable wow and of course some Bluray titles watched in fullhd we're pretty much 'oh my god' in terms of visual quality.

Rock Bottom5697d ago

Shows how much of a noob he is, the only thing that FFVII had and no other RPG had it before was the graphics, FFVI had a better story, FFVI, FFV and almost any Dragon Quest game had better and deeper fighting system and characters upgrading.

If graphics and cut-scenes are the things that defined RPGs for him, then that just shows how shallow he is.

Baka-akaB5697d ago

delusional partially yes , but he's also being a good soldier ...
Everyone forgets that he isnt a free agent ...

Statix5697d ago (Edited 5697d ago )

How can you say that FF7 DIDN'T define the JRPG genre as we know it today? Almost every mdoern RPG you see takes after or is inspired/influenced in some way by the narrative style, elements, and structure, character archetypes, along with cinematic presentation, of FF7, good or bad. FF7 is widely considered by many Japanese gamers and developers as one of the most influential games of all time. After 3 years, people are still begging for a PS3 remake of the game, for pete's sake.

Doctor Strange5696d ago

I have to agree that FFVII help define rpgs as we know it today. There is no denying the fact that especially in the west this is the rpg that really grab people's attention and people still want more like a remake like I do.

But I will disagree with him about the PS3 not having any OMG moments. MGS4, Ratchet and Clank in motion and Uncharted were some of those moments for me.

This is only my opinion though.

TapiocaMilkTea5696d ago

Definitely FF6 that defined RPG for me. I would not be obsessed with RPGs if not for this game. FF7 defined RPG in 3D graphics IMO.

Original Final Fantasy 7 - Is it Worth Playing in 2024?

Final Fantasy 7 has come back under the spotlight thanks to the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but is it worth replaying the original?

ravens5219d ago

Got to Zacks part in 7 Rebirth. Said f it. Finishing my game in 7 og. Just got to part 2 yesterday. I also got Crisis Core... So it'll be a while before I'm back to Rebirth. I just keep thinking about it too smh, want to get back to playing it. Not till I know Zacks story though. I beat 7 og sooooooo long ago, it's crazy going through it again and remembering things.

MrNinosan19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Got to Zacks part in Rebirth?
You mean you started the game and turned it off?
The game starts with Zack...

ravens5219d ago

... Really 🤓 lol. His second part, I've played for 80hrs lmao. <---- PS5 Run time, probably not all game time. You guys know how it goes.

VIK212119d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Did you not ever play the OG FF7? After you recruit Vincent, later in the game, disc 3, return to that basement and look at the pod, there's a whole Zack story that'll trigger as a memory.... it's well hidden in the game and a lot of things regarding Zack are cleared up. FF7 Crisis Core is basically an extend feature of that hidden flashback... It took me years to discover it back then lol

@ravens52
80 hours in Rebirth by doing everything, and you should've reached Zacks story about 5 times 🤣

ravens5218d ago

Ye I kno that's y I said not all gameplay time. But also I am very anal when it comes to exploring.

ravens5218d ago

Not to mention fighting Titan at his full strength. Hours spent trying still haven't succeeded. Found all 3 ruins but I'ma masochist when it comes to games.

Barlos20d ago

Very much so. Graphically it's dated but the story and the gameplay haven't aged a day. It's still one of my all time favourite RPGs and for me is better than Remake in some ways.

Barlos19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

It always takes me back to Christmas 1997, I got it as a gift and I was blown away when I played it. I couldn't believe games could look that good. The combination of pre rendered backgrounds and FMV really made it stand out. It definitely still has a certain charm that modern games can't replicate.

I can't imagine people will still be talking about Remake and Rebirth in 27 years.

Tapani19d ago

Fully agreed. To me the atmosphere, pacing, gameplay and music are all better than in the remake.

Rebel_Scum20d ago

Yes, play this, skip remake, start rebirth for new players.

I_am_Batman19d ago

Skip Remake? That's terrible advice.

leahcim19d ago

Remake is so amazing, pure FFVII Love, play it on PS5 please! aww the graphics the battles, the music... a dream come true.

Rebel_Scum19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

I disagree Batman

Rise of the ronin sold twice as much as Dragons Dogma 2 this week...but no articles about that. It's only news if a PS exclusive is being outsold.
