Nintendo Switch has sold 1.5m worldwide - SuperData

And 9 out of 10 Switch owners bought Zelda with it. Using data supplied to it by both Famitsu and GfK, SuperData says that 500,000 consoles were sold in the US, 360,000 were sold in Japan while Europe 'isn't far behind'. The data tracker observes that 85,000 units were sold in the UK while France managed 110,000.

Only games will be available on Switch will be mostly of Nintendo and of indies. FYI: Even with just the copies of Breath of the Wild sold so far, there would have to be 34 million Switches in the Wild for Breath of the Wild to have the attach rate of Skyward Sword and 20 million Switches for it to have the attach rate of Twilight Princess. Unless you think Zelda sales are going to completely freeze tomorrow and the Switch is going to go on and sell two and a half times the number of Wii Us, your earlier prediction is flat out wrong. Breath of the Wild will likely beat the attach rate of both Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess.

To be fair, I like Nintendo games but the Wii U was pretty dang light on them. Mario Kart and Smash Bros were great for multiplayer, as usual. However there was no Zelda. Super Mario 3D World was good, but couldn't hold a candle to 64, Sunshine, or Galaxy 1/2. Xenoblade X was good, but Xenoblade Chronicles was better. Pikmin 3 is good, but it's not really a must-have. Splatoon and Bayonetta 2 were really the only breakout games off the top of my head, and Bayonetta 2 is niche and wasn't made by Nintendo.

The Switch already has Zelda. Odyssey is garnering a lot more attention than 3D World. If Splatoon 2 is as good as the first one that will be a success. And Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will hopefully be better than X was. Those are the high profile games of just the Switch's first year. In contrast to the lifespan of the Wii U, it's already a huge difference.

Nintendo said that about the first 2 days of sales, not the first full week, which is kind of why you can't really go by that. The Switch is also one of their first consoles to launch globally, the rest of their consoles had scattered launches so again you can't really go by what Nintendo said without aligning them all up with their first 2 days considering some of their launches were weeks - months aparts between regions.

All it means is Nintendo had more supply ready for launch than most of their other consoles, hype and demand was better for the Switch than most of their other consoles, gaming has become significantly more mainstream since their other consoles, and the Switch is off to a good start.

May - Oct. are going to determine what happens with the Switch, just like it did with the 3DS. If it can average over 100k per week globally during those months they'll be just fine for this generation. If like the 3DS it consistently drops below 100k per week globally then you can expect a potential price drop, bundle, or SKU without the dock launching that year or within 6 months after October 2017.

Theoretically speaking the Switch should win April as well, that being said Nintendo's last 2 devices (Wii U and 3DS), tanked hard after their first month (3DS) / quarter sales (Wii U, launched holiday, and tanked Jan.).

April - October is going to tell the story of the Switch. As long as it does well during that time, they're good at their $299 price.

If sales tank like the 3DS / Wii U, then we're likely to see:
1. Holiday bundles for $299 (which are likely regardless)
2. Dockless SKU for $249 (just to keep profits up)
3. A price drop down to $249 (least likely)

NES had no competition
SNES wasn't a huge seller. It did well, but it was also the last console that had strong 3rd party support.
Game Boy had no competition
GBA had no competition
Wii was blue ocean, and fortunately it worked for them.
DS was a huge hit for them and the peak of handheld gaming.
3DS has done well, but thus far sold 91m less than its predecessor, but mobile gaming is the new competition

Nintendo's hardware success was at a time where there was no direct competition among them, or when they went full casual with the Wii and their handheld devices.

Honestly once PlayStation hit the market, Nintendo as a home console brand went from a slow decline to a steep fall off. Their handhelds have been their bread and butter, but now that mobile devices like cellphones and tablets offer capable enough gaming, especially witch a bluetooth controller, that market has drastically declined as well, making the 3DS their worst performance handheld since the original Game & Watch.

I don't think anyone should count the Switch out, but history is definitely not on their side as far as consoles go, nor with the decline the 3DS faced.

Shhh, don't you realize that selling consoles is like the olympics? There's medals for who sold the most. No one ever remembers second or third place, only those who break records and take home gold. Success is measured by how much you win, not if you make money or not.

JK, It's really annoying how everyone has to turn everything into a competition. No one has to be the biggest or the best to be successful. I don't remember what company type, but there was a company that catapulted themselves to success by launching an advertising campaign painting themselves as the second best in the industry, rather than fighting others to paint themselves at the best.

If a gamer walks into a Best Buy, Gamestop or wherever games are sold with money in his pocket to buy a game system he is going to be faced with a choice of 3 different systems that 2 of which offer some similarities in terms of their offering and 1 that has some pretty significant differences including the majority of games available on it. If you want the high end gaming experience you have 2 choices, if you want something that offers portability as well as the ability to be a home console you have an option to explore. Just because YOU feel this console is not what YOU want doesn't mean this console from Nintendo isn't a competitor. Different doesn't mean worse it just means different. With this launch Nintendo got roughly 1.5 million people to spend likely $400+ in their ecosystem and not in Sony or MS's ecosystems. You know as well as I do a large portion of people who bought the Switch likely had a PS4 or Xbox One as well. You can't tell me Sony or MS would not have loved to see those gamers spend that money on their games and platform vs handing it to Nintendo. If you think Sony and MS are not keenly watching Nintendo right now and how the Switch does then you are just putting blinders on.

And for the record McDonald's 100% cares that customers go to another place for their meal vs coming to them. why do you think they have more than burgers and fries on their menu? Its because they want to attract those people who are not just looking for burgers and fries.

at the end of the day regardless of what you're trying to call it for a fact it is not going to house titles like Far Cry Assassin's Creed Mass Effect Resident Evil series Call of Duty Battlefield what have you.

You could call the switch whatever you want but for fact you cannot call the device that plays all of those series when you actually add up the install base of those games you get an extremely high number.

Third-party Mega franchises that you're seeing on PC PlayStation and Xbox are actually the majority of the hardcore market and Nintendo clearly is not part of that.

Mind you that is all their own volition they chose to make Hardware that was incompatible with those games though they chose to not be part of that market.

So in that respect they choose to make pizza while their Rivals make Burger and Fries

when somebody's walking into a place and they want Burger and Fries that's exactly what they want buddy they want Burger and Fries.

People don't just walk into a place when they're looking to buy a gaming system simply because of the gaming system, there is a piece of software that they want, the software is more relevant.

People don't just want the gaming system , they want the experience in regards to the games that it could offer.

Just like people don't walk into the mall when they're hungry and try to eat anything regardless, they either want pizza or they want burgers and fries with the analogy that I listed

they're going to choose one based on what they want no different than you're going to choose a game system based on what you want in regards to Software.

I see where you were going with your burger pizza analogy, but it doesn't quite work, because at the end of the day they are still competing for the consumer dollar, just like Nintendo and Sony / MS. I do think Nintendo isn't trying to compete directly with Microsoft or Sony. They're pushing to be the console you buy on it's own merits, if you so desire, rather than as an alternative to the other consoles.

However, as others have said the analogy just doesn't work. Restaurants open and close all the time. Sometimes a new restaurant that people are excited for can divert business from elsewhere and cause other nearby restaurants to close down. We quite recently had a Popeye's and Chick-Fil-A open nearby and people are going there like crazy. I have no doubt that there's going to be a few other local restaurants that close down due to the diverted business. Also, PC gaming went downhill for a while in the mid 2000's when consoles really became popular. Mobile ate into the handheld market and nearly took down the 3DS, in addition to hurting the Vita. Point is, markets that aren't in direct competition take business from other markets all the time. You can bet that even if the Switch isn't a raging success, Sony and Microsoft have people watching how it does and what people like and don't like about it.

The hardcore Market in regards to properties like Mass Effect Assassin's Creed Resident Evil Watch Dogs Destiny, Call of Duty Battlefield Final Fantasy, what have you it's still pretty much PC Playstation Xbox.

All those games collectively are part of a market that Nintendo is not part of

Like the analogy I had previously you might get some times where you have a slice of pizza with toppings like fries or maybe ground beef for hamburger pizza but the reality is none of those will really substitute for the real thing I agree that pizza enthusiasm I'd have a good time having those different varieties of pizza but ultimately if they want a hamburger they're going to have to go to McDonald's or Burger King to really get that enjoyment.

So until Papa John's start serving hamburgers or until Nintendo actually has all of those properties.

McDonald's and Burger King in checkers will not see Papa John's as a threat to their Market (or Sony and Microsoft are not going to start to sweat until Nintendo has a system capable of playing all the major third-party games and has a deal with all of them, only then will you see Sony and Microsoft see Nintendo as a direct competitor)

Most of the comments I've read in the broad sense see them as competitors simply because they belong in the industry of Gaming but that's no different than saying mobile phones are competitors to Sony and Microsoft in a sense but they're not direct competitors what they do it was irrelevant to Sony and Microsoft.

Just like in the analogy I've used they might belong in the food industry it doesn't actually mean they are direct competitors.

In the end of the day they are very specific industry of burger and fries you have direct competitors that all kind of follow the same scenario where you're seeing drive-thrus or you're seeing dollar menu , where you're even seeing $3 for 4(DAT Checkers deal doe) $4 for 4, etc

You're not seeing a lot of that with pizza places because that specific aspect is not a direct competitor to them it's irrelevant to them.

So in a sense my analogy is not saying that in the broad sense they're not competitors because you could kind of say any company is competitor to any company but in the more specific sense they are not direct competitors meaning what they do it's hardly going to influence what their Market is unless they begin to do the same exact things.

Like I said before and I cannot stress this enough McDonald's and checkers can start to worry when Papa John's start selling burgers and fries with dollar menus and drive-thrus.

Just like Microsoft and Sony could start to worry when Nintendo has a system powerful enough to run all the major 3rd party games at a reasonable price.

The only way we can categorize the market is by the most important aspect and gaming and that's the software itself at the end of the day the soft or you're saying on PC PlayStation and Xbox as a whole is not the same software on the Nintendo platform which means by default they are not the same markets.

What we are talking about is an absolute ridiculous amount of properties that are basically only found on PC PlayStation and Xbox, enough to respectfully say they exist within a market that Nintendo is not part of, they literally exist on platforms not including Nintendo.

Thus not the same Market in an actual literal sense!

All companies would like to keep the failure rate of their product as low as possible so even if Nintendo allowed for a failure rate of 0.5% that would mean they would need to have at least 10,000 available for replacement out of 2,000,000 devices sold which are considerable.

Normally a failed device can be repaired so this is another option which can reduce dramatically the necessity of having replacement stock. Obviously, there would be a policy in place that would allow the technician to make the call on whether the faulty device can be repaired economically or replaced.

With electronic devices, you will always have some failures and the more modular or accessible the device the easier and quicker it is to repair although there is a point where repair is uneconomical and replacement is the cheaper solution. For small (eg. phones, tablets) devices repair can be difficult considering that the components are very small.

As you said and I've been saying, the real test will be the next several months April - October. They need to consistently sale over 100k units per month, so they can average 400k - 500k this would put them at 8m - 10m for the year counting the holiday sales influx. ($299 holiday bundles)

If sales fall off like the 3DS and they average 75k weekly, then they'll be in the 6m - 8m range, which isn't bad, but definitely not the hit they want and need. (we'll see holiday bundles for $279 - $299, and possibly a SKU without the dock for $249)

If sales tank and it falls into 50k or less category, then it's another Wii U, and they're in serious trouble without a steep price drop like the 3DS had, because they'll only be on track for 5m or less. (Holiday bundles for $279, and a possibly a SKU without the dock for $229).

I think $199 w/o Dock, $249 w. Dock, and $279 bundled w dock and game are the magic numbers for mass adoption of the Switch, but Nintendo will want to keep any profits or prevent any possible loss as much as possible (AMAP), which is business.

The whole idea of the Switch was the ability to be a portable and a console device. Removing the dock would effectively make the device a portable which may not be all that attractive to many people especially when you consider that the 3DS is cheaper, has more software and is much more conveniently portable.

While it's great they're selling out, once again I'm proven right that Nintendo flat out sucks at meeting consumer demand. It literally killed the Wii not having the software nor the hardware to keep up with consumers. Could bode especially bad for the Switch in this economy. Nintendo really needs to jack up their manufacturing. Amount and quality. Strange to see so many different hardware issues. The 360 had 1 red light with 2 separate patterns for slightly different occurring issues. PS3 had a single yellow light and memory corruption. Switch has 4 or 5 prevalent issues.

If the switch sells like the wii that would be a great thing for nintendo. The ps4 and the pro had more problems than the switch does. Blue light of death, overheating, broken hdmi, wouldn't power on, fans being extremely loud, faulty graphics card, controller having problems connecting, the analog stick rubber falling apart, the console not ejecting discs, the console auto ejecting discs, console never turning on. The problem with buying consoles or any electronics at launch is that there will always be a small percentage of failure.

The Wii U sold like this for the first 2 months as well. Nothing new. Wait until month 3 and the only real viable exclusive is still Zelda, and almost nothing but a re-hashed Mario Kart is coming out in the next 6 months. Sales of this thing will plummet. Mobile gaming is useless to me, so I hope it does fail and Nintendo is forced to make games on all platforms like SEGA. Then we could actually play Zelda at a decent resolution and framerate.
