Nintendo Switch has sold 1.5m worldwide - SuperData

And 9 out of 10 Switch owners bought Zelda with it. Using data supplied to it by both Famitsu and GfK, SuperData says that 500,000 consoles were sold in the US, 360,000 were sold in Japan while Europe 'isn't far behind'. The data tracker observes that 85,000 units were sold in the UK while France managed 110,000.

So Zelda Switch has sold 1.34m worldwide. Not bad at all in my opinion, nice idea by Nintendo to release the new console with a Zelda game.

Or they could have rewarded wiiu owner's loyalty with a Zelda game last year instead. I mean the game was built for the Wiiu.

What worse is they barely shipped any wiiu copies as they are sold out at retail I'm my area yet there shelves are overflowing with Switch copies

indysurfn2613d ago (Edited 2613d ago )

Zelda was built for Wiiu Nintendo said so, and so did the lead developers. It was switch over to SWITCH.....no pun intended.

Moonman2613d ago (Edited 2613d ago )

And that's not counting Wii U. I'd say Zelda did about 1.9 million worldwide week one. It's going to be evergreen. Watch December NPD and BOTW will be there.

boomtube19872613d ago (Edited 2613d ago )

All the Nintendogs will buy it first couple month of launch. This is no big deal. The real hard work is getting non Nintendog fans. At the moment. Switch has no Shooters and reputable sports game. A vital part of modern console gaming. This isnt the 90's. You cant live off platform games.

wonderfulmonkeyman2612d ago (Edited 2612d ago )

Show something to prove that the jocks, casuals, and chavs would go from buying those on PS4 and XB1 to buying them mostly on Switch, before you go claiming the typical suspects from those categories actually matter to the Switch's future.
You underestimate fanboy brand loyalty.
No amount of portability and local lan play is going to get the majority of your average FIFA or CoD fans to buy their multiplat darlings on Switch, because that's not where their buying habits lie.

Dragonscale2612d ago (Edited 2612d ago )

So no 3rd party games is good then, no wonder most 3rd party devs wont touch nintendo consoles with a bargepole. Hmm ok. And fanboy brand loyalty is why switch has sold this many. As usual nintendo fans only care about nintendo games.

boomtube19872612d ago (Edited 2612d ago )

@wonderfulmonkeyman exactly. Which puts Switch in to the same situation as the Wii U. Switch will just be another Nintendo console that will fail cause it cannot win over non fanboy consumers and made of mostly Nintendo fanboys. Games like FIFA and COD wil probably come to switch like they had done with Wii U but after two iterations. They will never return. Only games will be available on Switch will be mostly of Nintendo and of indies. No GTA, COD, FIFA, BF, Mass Effect ect. these are essential console gaming franchises, regardless of what consoles we own and if it cannot power these games. its dead. I was right about Wii U about this reason. I will be right about Switch. I promise by the years end. Switch will be dead. Regardless if next proper mario game getting 10/10. Nintendo just doesn't get how modern console gamers and console business works. This isn't the 80's and 90's anymore. Switch isn't a big FAD like original Wii was. This will be Nintendo's last console. Hopefully we can finally see Nintendo invest huge on games rather than console business. I expect Mario games to pop up on PS5 or Xbox 1080 whatever they will call it on next gen system.

CaptainObvious8782612d ago

Not too bad.

It will be interesting to see if the switch continues to sell, or if it falls off a cliff.

kaiserxblue2612d ago

Not to mention the ones that sold on the Wii U, which I know it's probably lower than the Switch but if you add up thopse copies then yep, it has sold pretty good actually.

XanderZane2612d ago

Yes, a decent start. Now we wait and see what it does up until the E3.

I have already seen 2 people in the bus playing on a Switch which shocked me since everyone is usually playing on their phones. I will definitely be getting one once Mario Odyssey comes out.

Erik73572613d ago

I heard a lot of my friends talking about it which surprised me. We are in college btw

MetroidFREAK212613d ago

What does being in college have to do with talking about the Switch? I'm 25, in college and I purchased one? What's the problem?

DoomeDx2612d ago

So you're in college? What does that have to do with anything?

davand1142613d ago

I've seen a few of them out in the wild. One person was playing blaster master, which was pretty cool.

Nyxus2613d ago

89% attach rate for Zelda, crazy! Then again, it is the logical choice if you get a Switch.

Erik73572613d ago

Nintendo games sell like crazy. Its what you get a nintendo console for

_-EDMIX-_2613d ago (Edited 2613d ago )

Ironically that doesn't bode well for the future.

"Its what you get a nintendo console for"

2613d ago
bluefox7552613d ago

That didn't really work out for the Wii U though.

ILostMyMind2613d ago

You're totally right. And that's why the third parties leave Nintendo consoles.

conanlifts2612d ago (Edited 2612d ago )

Prince-Ali

Seriously you need to get a life and stop trolling. Its just sad.

@edmix... its the main reason i bought switch. But i will buy other games. Hopefully the system succeeds and others do the same. Being portable i think certain 3rd party games will sell better than they would other wise have.

The 10th Rider2612d ago (Edited 2612d ago )

@_-EDMIX-_,

"Ironically that doesn't bode well for the future."

The irony is that you're back at it again trying to forecasts Zelda's sales . . . You thought it's attach rate would be closer to Skyward Sword than to Twilight Princess'.

http://imgur.com/a/LUt35

FYI: Even with just the copies of Breath of the Wild sold so far, there would have to be 34 million Switches in the Wild for Breath of the Wild to have the attach rate of Skyward Sword and 20 million Switches for it to have the attach rate of Twilight Princess. Unless you think Zelda sales are going to completely freeze tomorrow and the Switch is going to go on and sell two and a half times the number of Wii Us, your earlier prediction is flat out wrong. Breath of the Wild will likely beat the attach rate of both Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess.

@bluefox755,

To be fair, I like Nintendo games but the Wii U was pretty dang light on them. Mario Kart and Smash Bros were great for multiplayer, as usual. However there was no Zelda. Super Mario 3D World was good, but couldn't hold a candle to 64, Sunshine, or Galaxy 1/2. Xenoblade X was good, but Xenoblade Chronicles was better. Pikmin 3 is good, but it's not really a must-have. Splatoon and Bayonetta 2 were really the only breakout games off the top of my head, and Bayonetta 2 is niche and wasn't made by Nintendo.

The Switch already has Zelda. Odyssey is garnering a lot more attention than 3D World. If Splatoon 2 is as good as the first one that will be a success. And Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will hopefully be better than X was. Those are the high profile games of just the Switch's first year. In contrast to the lifespan of the Wii U, it's already a huge difference.

MRMagoo1232612d ago

@10th rider

once again someone using the word irony when they don't know what the word means , there is nothing ironic about any of what you said about edmix. There are free dictionaries on the internet and also complete websites dedicated to explaining common errors like this , check em out. start with Google and type in definition of irony.

The 10th Rider2612d ago (Edited 2612d ago )

@MRMagoo123,

Well, fair enough. Probably wasn't the best word to use. I know what it means though, and while not the best choice it still works in the situation. There is certainly a dose of comedic irony in seeing someone push the same narrative when reality flies right in the face of his claims. Like if a weatherman forecasted a bright sunny day, only to be poured upon while walking home later in the day.

UltraNova2613d ago

There wasnt much else to get on launch day tbh..that said the game deserves all the sales it can get.

TheFirstClassic2613d ago

Only other good game atm is fast rmx, not really what many would buy a switch for ofc.

TheFirstClassic2613d ago

Tru i forgot that came out launch day

InTheZoneAC2613d ago

I bought Zelda for my Wii u, since that was the most logical choice

JEECE2613d ago

Yeah, I'm wondering what the other 11% are doing. I mean, I get that snipperclips is probably fun, but it doesn't seem like a system-seller. And this is not like a PS/Xbox launch where some people blindly ignore exclusives to play new iterations of COD/Madden.

wonderfulmonkeyman2612d ago (Edited 2612d ago )

Binding of Issac, Bomberman, Fast RMX, etc. Plenty coming, and what's there in the interim is good quality for the most part.
Honestly the people who say there's nothing aside from Zelda are just being narrow-mindedly asinine...

JEECE2612d ago

@wonderfulmonkeyman

I'm not saying there's nothing else, but it's tough for me to imagine someone choosing to buy one of those games over BOTW, rather than in addition to it. Also, Binding of Isaac wasn't even out at launch and has been out for awhile on every other system, so it's not really a system seller.

XanderZane2612d ago (Edited 2612d ago )

What else would you play on it? Anyone who bought a Switch would obviously buy Zelda, since there's no Mario, Metroid, Splatoon, MKR, Mario Party or Pokemon game to play on it yet.

@Erik7357
Without any quality 3rd party games it could end up like the Wii U.

Nintendo said that Switch was their fastest selling console in its opening weekend, yet this Superdata article is saying it sold 500,000 in the US during its first week while Wii sold 600,000 in the US in its first 8 days.

How does that work out?

zivtheawesome2613d ago (Edited 2613d ago )

maybe overall? well i don't really know.
also how is it compared to ps4 and xbox1?

2pacalypsenow2613d ago (Edited 2613d ago )

Xbox 1 and Ps4 sold over 1 million in 24 hours, each.

Ps4 sold 1 million in 24 hours in just U.S and Canada and the Xbox 1 in 13 countries.

zivtheawesome2613d ago

are the switch numbers for 24hours as well? also wasn't the xbox million shipped?

2pacalypsenow2613d ago

The Switch numbers are for the whole week. And the Xbox 1 was sold not shipped

DarkZane2613d ago

Both the PS4 and Xbox One did better.

Launch numbers also means nothing if you can't keep it up.

abra5112613d ago (Edited 2613d ago )

ps4 sold 1 mil 1st 24 hours in us
and 700000 1st 24 in Europe

@FallenAngel1984

Nintendo said that about the first 2 days of sales, not the first full week, which is kind of why you can't really go by that. The Switch is also one of their first consoles to launch globally, the rest of their consoles had scattered launches so again you can't really go by what Nintendo said without aligning them all up with their first 2 days considering some of their launches were weeks - months aparts between regions.

All it means is Nintendo had more supply ready for launch than most of their other consoles, hype and demand was better for the Switch than most of their other consoles, gaming has become significantly more mainstream since their other consoles, and the Switch is off to a good start.

May - Oct. are going to determine what happens with the Switch, just like it did with the 3DS. If it can average over 100k per week globally during those months they'll be just fine for this generation. If like the 3DS it consistently drops below 100k per week globally then you can expect a potential price drop, bundle, or SKU without the dock launching that year or within 6 months after October 2017.

jaredite832612d ago

US isn't the only country in the world where wii's and switches were released.

PhoenixUp2612d ago

He's only talking about the US sales

Firebird3602612d ago

@2pacalypsenow x1 and ps4 also came out at holiday times, switch dropped in march. That's huge numbers for a march release.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the anti-Breath of the Wild

Polygon: "To get back to the way Ocarina made us feel, it was necessary to reject almost everything about it."

LG_Fox_Brazil138d ago

Ocarina of Time changed my life forever, such a masterpiece

Zeldafan64138d ago

Hard to believe it's 25 years old already.

Cacabunga138d ago

The feeling this game gave me the first time i had my hands on it is indescribable.. i still get the chill from that day..
botw is like a spin off of the series.. it’s fun but with many flaws and the most important which is Zelda formula isn’t there..

FinalFantasyFanatic137d ago

I can't even remember how many times I played through OoT, I finished that game, and collected everything so many times.

Vits138d ago

I generally agree with the author here. However, if I had to point out a single game as the 'anti-Breath of the Wild,' that would be Majora's Mask. Pretty much everything in that game is interconnected, relies on something that the player must have done previously, is timed, and can be considered a puzzle in itself.

gold_drake138d ago

but still considered the best of the seties.

i would have liked botw to be more like ocarina.

franwex138d ago (Edited 138d ago )

25 years from today whatever Zelda is out people would too be looking fondly at Breath of the Wild.

Ah the more simple times of the 2020s.

Nintendo not thinking about older Zelda games, "difficult to say" if classic style will return

The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma has again commented on the possibility of revisiting the style of past entries in the series – but there are no plans as of now. Speaking with RTL Nieuws, Aonuma said that games like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom were possible because of what came before them.

Which is very sad. I still wish we could get a zelda like twilight princess, the dark tone and theme in the traditional style. But times have changed and the masses prefer open world sandbox. Smh. Perhaps we can get a proper hd remake of ocarina of time some day.

CDbiggen277d ago

I played 100 hours of Tears of the Kingdom, enjoyed it, but ready for a game like that next.

kythlyn311d ago

If they can bounce between 2D and 3D Mario games, they can bounce between classic and modern Zelda games too. I thought this was a given when the Switch combined a handheld with a primary console.

Inverno311d ago

Then this is where I part ways. I won't disagree with anyone who says that the old formula was getting stale. And I do think BoTW in a few ways was a step in the right direction, but there's way too much good that was left with the old formula in the transition.

CrimsonWing69311d ago

I want it to. I’m sorry, but these new Zelda games I just can’t get into.

Duke19311d ago

Well that sucks. I still love the classic formula WAY more than the Hyrule Engineering Simulator
