Things like this just bring him more viewers, because it gets him more attention. I don't think his initial review was click bait, because he stated his reasons better than other reviewers and actually said how it affected the game, and he doesn't really need click bait to get by. I'm sure he knew it would cause some fuss, but he never seemed to care about that much. So when stuff like this happens, it just gives him attention, which is good for his subscriber base, which helps him get more patrons hopefully.

The thing about Sterling though is that he will stand by his score, and not back down. I will say that sometimes he does counter these kinds of negative feedback in ways that aren't really necessary though.

It was more all the low scores for Sony exclusives, and high praise for MS games before TLOU that gave them their reputation.

Now that Polygon has shunned the normal gaming community for their idiotic SJW stuff and their part in GamerGate, they lost a lot of their viewership, so in the past couple years they've been lightening up about Sony games because they know that's there the majority of gamers are playing now.

It's easy to keep a userbase with low scores when all things are equal, but if the majority of console players never agree with their reviews, then they aren't going to visit the site.

Starting to give high scores to Sony games was just a matter of survival for them. It wasn't some unbiased shift in their thinking. Polygon is still run by the same shills it always has been. The content of their reviews are usually decent, so they have that going for them, but their a while back were never consistent when it came to scoring PS or MS exclusives.

Also, I can't ever say that BOTW is the best game in history. That's an impossible assertion to qualify, and a score doesn't always indicate a games quality. Having played enough of the game to form an opinion now, I can say that I wouldn't even consider it the best Zelda game in history, much less the best game overall. It's a great Zelda game, but it brings nothing new to the table in the genre it's in. For all it's "innovation", that innovation is only within the Zelda franchise itself. That doesn't make the game suddenly become the best ever.

You ask when you acted like 89 metascore was bad well let's see when you first replied when discussing what could win goty awards and you said nothing but "89 vs 97 enough said" as if horizon scoring 89 disqualified it from winning goty awards or being in discussion. I'm pretty calm. I don't hate Zelda. I've played enough of Horizon and Zelda to form an opinion on them.

I feel BOTW is a great game. It's not the best game of all time, and I personally wouldn't score it in the high 90's. So I think the meta score is inflated.

I feel Horizon is a great game. It's not the best game of all time, and I personally would score it in the 85-90 range. Thus, the metascore seems to match what I feel the game is deserving of.

I also feel that Horizon is a better game overall. It has better game mechanics, more interesting world, better and more varied combat, better enemy variety(although sometimes lackluster AI), and infinitely better story for as far as I've played in both.

It's not that Zelda is a bad game by any means, but for all the things that Horizon does better than BOTW, I can't see how a review from the same reviewer could peg Zelda as higher with the technical issues it has/had.

I'd be perfectly willing to concede that the overall experiences are pretty equal when it comes to the score though. Both are 85-90 games. Technial flaws and rather lackluster world hold back Zelda from being a "perfect game". Pretty much the same thing that holds back Horizon, although they have different technical issues.

Yeah well. That guys review wasn't even a review of the game, it was an opinion piece to have a bitch session about how UC4 wasn't some other game(which I can't remember now). He barely talked about the game, and his biggest criticism was that it looked too good and he stopped to marvel at the surroundings too often.

The biggest problem though was that MetaCritic assigned a score to a review that didn't have one, despite the Washington post having a scored review on the same site.

Anyhow, there are always crazy people on the internet. For even the most trivial things which most people would only have a passing interest in, you can find someone who thinks that any perceived slight is the worst thing in the world.

I don't get why gamers are even upset by reviews like this anymore. When you have so many people out there reviewing there's going to be at least a couple outliers. Super Mario 64, Chrono Trigger, etc . . . They'd all see a reviewer that thought they were crap if the review climate was the same as it is today. Let's play devil's advocate for while. So Jim scores Zelda as a good game, not a 10/10 game. So diehard Zelda fanboys take down his site and many people sensible people and comments here point out the absurdity of such actions. 7 isn't a bad score, and only slightly lower than what many people feel they would rate the game at. Most people aren't saying that Zelda should be score 7 or lower. They're just saying it isn't a game that they would score in the high 90's or give it a perfect 10.

Most of the railing against low Horizon scores....which are few....are that they are rediculously low. Overall, Horizon scores have been pretty good too. It just doesn't have almost unanimous high 9's and 10's. Thus, Horizon is actually getting a meta score which is closer to what most people feel it should be.

Sarcasm aside, Splatoon 2 and Xenoblade 2 are absolutely heavy hitters. Arms has the potential to become one, too, and Mario Kart 8 is still an amazing game, even if it's a port of a Wii U game.

Also, indie games can be just as much fun as big AAA games, sometimes more. People dismissing them just for being indies are being really closed minded.

I read the review which besides being well written explained exactly why the game wasn't a 10 and why he felt it was a 7 which you know means good game. Personally I would rate it at least 8.5 but you know what it was his opinion which I accept and I actually agree with a lot of things he brought up in his review they just bothered me less hence why I would score it higher

When asked how a game with acknowledged flaws can get a perfect 10, the excuse from a lot of hardcore fans has been:
"10/10 doesn't mean flawless or perfect"
or even "The flaws are inconsequential when compared to the rest of the game".

In which case, this shows a big flaw in review scores if a 10/10, 5/5, 100/100 or 100% don't mean flawless.
Heck on topic of a 7/10, he acknowledges that it's a good game, he likes it & that 7/10 is a good score which is true because 5/10 is average.

There does have to be a bit of leeway to consider just how much a flaw actually affects the overall game. For instance, a few FPS drop every once in a while may not be such a big thing to knock points off of. If it happens often, and actually affects game play, then yeah, it should be scored.

There is no such thing as a perfect game. But reviews do have to weigh the overall experience when assigning a score. At the same time though, the overall experience is going to be affected by the flaws, and if those flaws are frequent or apparent enough, then it should be rated. I feel the flaws that exist in Zelda are prevalent enough to actually have an impact on the experience. It takes you out of the immersion. Thus, it's not a perfect game.

I have other reasons personally why I think it isn't a perfect game, but that's a different discussion.

Exactly. I have absolutely no problem with Jim Sterling's score for this game; I've read enough of his reviews to believe that he's really honest on those, and I respect and enjoy his reviews immensely even if I don't always agree with them.

That doesn't mean he's wrong and everyone else is right, or vice-versa. He just didn't find that game to be as amazing as everyone else made it out to be, and that's okay. I'm pretty sure that's happened to all of us on quite a few games. Myself, for example... 7 is about what I would give it. Graphics suck, can be kind of boring, and I came across a bug that made me start over.

People calm down even though Horizon it's a better game Zelda still got way less troll reviews than Horizon has and I'm not saying this was a troll review because I finally played this game and it's definitely not a 10 just the frame rate brings it down to a 9 itself. When I play a game I look for performance just as much I look at gameplay and graphics and Horizon wins on all 3 of those categories alone hands down.

Obviously he reviewed it without rose tinted spectacles and every criticism was valid. When you analyse the game honestly as these questions:

Does it have the besg graphics ever. No.
The best story ever. No.
The best combat ever. No.
The best characters ever. No.
The best open wotld ever. No.
The best gameplay ever. No.
Etc.
Along with performance issues and questionable gameplay mechanics how is this the best game ever? Simple it isn't.

It's actually prettt honest. I scratched my head at what made the game a 10. It's not unique by design we've seen open world games. The mechanics are frustrating. It's got technical issues... I mean my score is at an 8 so a 7 absolutely seems reasonable.

I think people really need to understand that reviews are simply just one person's opinion. I have read over the past 24 hours people saying Jim's getting paid by Sony (he scored Horizon higher) or that he did this to sabotage the Metacritic score.

Is it really that hard to believe he simply preferred Horizon Zero Dawn just that little more than Zelda? I am in the same boat as him. This is my first Zelda game since the N64. I think a 7 is fair for Zelda 7 is a good score what is the issue? I don't think Horizon is a 9.5 like Jim rated it. But I prefer it just that little bit more to Zelda and in my opinion Horizon is an 8. If Nintendo can iron out some of the issues (mostly the FPS drops in dock mode) via a patch. Then I would most likely rate Zelda the same as Horiozn.

"Zelda fans" and "Nintendo fans". The first mistake is assuming that "every" fan is involved, or even a significant portion of them. There's no need for the fans to "calm down", I mean, how many people do you need to hack a site? How many people de you need to make a DDOS attack? I'm not a hacker, but I'm pretty sure you dont need a legion of people and a lot of money for that to happen. I recognize there are a lot of crybabies in the gaming community these days. We've seen rage before. Do you remember when "all Uncharted and Sony fans" wanted The Washington Post to burn becuase they gave Uncharted 4 a 4/10?

Look, I'm a Nintendo fan, and I'm playing Zelda on WiiU since, well... I'm poor. I respect Jim Sterling and his videos (even if I consider him to be a little mind closed in some themes), and some points he made are debatable to me. But please, you're making a storm in a cup of water; "Zelda fans Calm Down"? Come on, why isn't this called "a fanboy hacker hacks a site"? It makes more sense.

Not that Jim's review is even bad! It's a review that praises the game it's just clear that he wasn't COMPLETELY bowled over by it.
