Nintendo Switch Is Sold Out, Here's Why It Doesn't Matter

Nintendo Switch being sold out doesn't exactly indicate that the console is a hot product.

The switch was by far the most abundant console launch I've seen. My best buy had 60 after pre-orders. I went to the same best buy for PS3, 360, and PS4 and there were way less launch units.

This didn't seem like a typical launch especially for Nintendo. They seemed to have quite a few and they were still available around 11am the next day.

It doesn't matter cause the only good game on there is apparently Zelda and that is also available on the wiiU in which from my understanding is that the only difference between the two versions is resolution. Switch 900p, wiiU 720p... Barely an upgrade.. More like a lazy remaster lol!
God of war 3 was remastered for the ps4 running at 1080p @ a solid 60fps, yet some people called it a lazy remaster?! Lol! But yet again, Nintendo gets a free pass.

I was on the fence to, walked into best buy and they had a few so I felt that itch and bought it. I honestly couldn't be happier, playing botw on the couch while my wife watches Netflix is awesome. I'm really blown away by the quality, it's a very nice piece of hardware.

I'm waiting. 3DS is apparently done (which really sucks). But it all depends on what games come out. Once a new Fire Emblem, Pokemon, and hopefully Monster Hunter release for it I will buy it. But I NEED those 3 games. If there is no new, updated Monster Hunter then it will be a big factor in my decision.

But I more than likely won't get one until those are actually released. They are the 3 big titles I always buy for my 3DS. Hopefully we can get a proper Metroid too.

I agree 100%. Most stores here only got maybe 25 switches or less so really selling out is irrelevant. Low numbers . I remember when PS4 and Xboxones were launching they had at least 75-100 of these consoles per store making it actually count.

that's what i did. And i finally cancelled my pre-order Tues night. For whatever reason I couldn't find Zelda on amazon until days after the pre-orders went up and Zelda SE along with the Master were already sold out. So if I can get Zelda SE I will likely buy a Switch asap otherwise I'll just wait until I actually have nothing else to play or until there are more games than Zelda to make the Switch worth owning, to me. With Nioh, Horizon, Neir, Ghost Recon, a few games in backlog and more coming I figured why bother. SE Zelda is the most important thing

Funny thing is there were 3 people at Walmart at midnight who all had the SE but not a Switch. There were 4 Switch consoles there and 3 of the 4 went to pre-orders. There were also only like 3 copies of Zelda SE. Which I figured, just sucks they couldn't tell me what they had so I could have left instead of wasting just over an hour in line waiting for them to ring up 5 customers.

"What we’ve said publicly is that there will be 2 million units that will be shipped worldwide for the launch, essentially through month one."

So there will be 2 million consoles available for the launch(meaning available within 1 month of the release day).

How many consoles do you think either the PS4 or X1 sold during their first whole Month? The X1 cleared 2 million in a couple weeks the PS4 cleared 2 million in a week. But Nintendo is hugely in demand not even having 2 million consoles to sell for a whole month...

If they had said 3 million or 4 during the first month, that would have been impressive and would have made sense. It also likely would have resulted in consoles being on shelves and available and no big articles about how hard it is to get one...

@eddie- I'm not migrating over to this and I own it 3DS I'm simply waiting until they confirm that this is the only device they're working on because if that 3DS successor is true then I'm not going to waste money on the Wii U when I could have the 3DS.

I'm going to go for the platform that gets the majority of their support

If they made crystal clear that they have no plans to work on any other device other than this then I have no problem picking it up this fall but if they're not ready to confirm that I'm not ready to spend money on something that's just not going to get the same support in the future.

This seems to be the only console that their making in the near future there was no guarantee that another handheld would be made. A lot of the devs from the 3ds are moving the next iteration to the switch so a lot of the 3ds owners will follow and get the switch, which they can use as a powerful handheld only if they want.

Switch on the other hand has... Zelda, also on the Wii U.

There is a qualitative difference between PS4/XB1/Wii U launch titles and Switch.

The ps4/xbox1 launch consisted mostly of ps3/360 ports and Battlefield 4(which was broken), knack, and rise. None of those games say "Great launch titles". Most consoles don't have great launch titles or come with all the promised features at launch. The launch of the switch is for people that like Zelda (which is one of the greatest games ever made), Bomberman(really fun game to play online btw), snipper clips, I am setsuna, the new shovel knight dlc, and like the 170+ games that are announced for the future. The wiiu's launch sucked. There were some ok games but most of them weren't worth a buy. Who would buy Mass Effect 3 on the wiiu when the collection was released on the ps3/360 for the same price. The ps4/x1 didn't have a decent library of games until a year and a half after they came out.

Also, if you're fan of Zelda games or adventure games/rpgs in general this really is a must play game. This is probably the best launch game in the history of video game consoles. Zelda Breath of the Wild is a huge system seller in my opinion.

It is a good thing that it's sold out though because if it couldn't do what every other console release does then it would definitely be something to worry about. You are overlooking a crucial aspect. If nintendo moves their games to ms or sony they lose a certain amount of control over their games. In addition they understand their hardware so well because they design it. They will not have this elsewhere and their games will suffer.
Regarding profits. They keep all their profits on their system. They also make money from every game published on their system. Moving elsewhere they will have to pay a small fee to ms or sony when their games sell. So while they might move more copies their profit per copy will be less, their control will be less and they will make no money off any other game other than their own.

You could tell the future? They make money from software, if and I mean "if" the install base is not big enough for their hardware, they will move to an install base that is.

That actually means likely leaving hardware all together.

If they can't get the market share, they will go to where the market is. They actually RISK losing mind share the longer people are not buying their hardware to play their games.

Your reply is full of errors. You wrote 15 million. I said they would make a new portable. The 3ds did not sell 15 million. Also i said they would make mobile games for ios and android thus increasing their install base. This would be their first move. I said this twice to you.

You mention 200 million...ps4 and xbox are no where near 200 million. Why did you use this figure.

As for losing control of their games. They lose control by having to follow the publishing contracts of ms and sony and paying them a fee. This fee is lost revenue. They make money on every piece of hardware sold. This is lost revenue. They make money from every game sold from every publisher. How many games are on the wii u and 3ds. In addition Nintendo are stubborn. A software only future will make them smaller and give away their control. If you think software only will make them stronger then just look at sega. If it were a positive sega would be bigger than nintendo. They are not. Sega games became worse without their hardware. Look at Atari.

15 million is just an estimation on what the wii u final numbers might be.

200 million is actually adding up the PlayStation 4 Xbox One and PC potential install base cuz that is the Hardcore Market that exists buying these third-party games.

I'm sorry but that doesn't mean that Nintendo cannot windup in the same position in regards to being a software publisher I would argue that if Nintendo goes software only they will easily become one of the biggest third-party Publishers in the world extremely quickly.

Nintendo has to follow the market and if the market is saying they don't have money to buy a Nintendo system to buy one game, Nintendo actually needs to take that into account as their goal is to sell software.

This does not make sense to fight the customer it's literally the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

If that means going to the consumer if the consumers no longer going to go to them that's actually the decision they might need to make, like I said they've already decided to do that with IOS and Android something that it seems you are desperate avoid.

They kept the entire install base with having to spend $0 on building Hardware.

Whether you like it or not if the switch fails which I personally don't think it's going to, I believe that is the decision this company's going to have to make because it's a literally idiotic that they keep wasting billions otherwise it literally lacks all logic and sense.

If Nintendo needs to make money in an install base in which they don't own the platform to right now they might later on if they continue to sell less units

Duh. Nintendo claimed to be sold out of preorders therefore why would stock be better after launch? Not like if preorders being "sold out" would indicate what kind of numbers actually have to be produced. /s

Nintendo admits to wanting to ship two million by the end of the year. They allocated high preorder reservations then cut the number to retailers instead of increasing it. All of this shows even further what people already know: Nintendo is once again trying to hype their own product by insinuating the product is more in demand than it actually is.

I was on the fence with the switch. But I bought one due to getting one for a decent price along with zelda. Am enjoying zelda at the moment. Sure I don't expect big 3rd party games to come to it. But as long as pokemon, minter Hunter come to it am happy with it.
