GCHD NHL 09 Review

If NHL 08 had a twin brother, it would be NHL 09. And I say that with utmost respect, because anytime you're the recipient of seven Game of the Year awards, releasing a near carbon copy wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. However, expectations for this title are at an all-time high, so it's going to take more than a few minor upgrades to bring home the hardware again. So the real question here is, can NHL 09 repeat as GotY, and have enough new features been implemented to ensure its place atop the ballot? My initial answer would have to be a no, but only because many of the new additions are merely cosmetic, and overall little has been done to enhance the actual gameplay engine. Make no mistake about it, though, NHL 09 is still a superb hockey title, I just expected more from a series that performed so well last year.

And when I say more, I mean serious refinements. Perhaps I'm too harsh on my hockey games, but anything less than groundbreaking improvements in the skating and checking engine was going to be a let down for me, and neither of those has happened this year. Instead we are left with the same solid gameplay engine from last year, with only a few minor tweaks and upgrades to keep us happy.

Brings back memories of uni days :) Did once punch a wall I got so frustrated. Was either that or destroy a controller. Fortunately I didn't break anything, but unfortunately it was a solid brick wall and my knuckles hurt like s*** afterwards!

Everyone has felt a little bit furious when they were hit by a blue shell in Mario Kart.

Never injured myself but I do remember crying once because the video game character wouldnt do what I wanted it too... Arrrgghhh the frustration!

Skellytorx3167d ago

I actually threw a controller at my brother once for constantly button bashing and not giving me a chance to fight back during a Tekken match. God I was such a bad loser.

Mario Kart is a big culprit. Never thrown anything in anger, but caused massive arguments between my best friend and I. I also hurt myself spinning around on a computer chair in victory and falling backwards.

Natalya in Goldeneye I never wanted to hurt someone so much.

And for pure, unbridled fury... CALL OF DUTY being verbally abused by 11 year olds is not my idea of gaming bliss.

Can't remember how many times I did things like set up remote mines, used rocket launcher, grenade launcher, etc in elaborate ways to kill Natalya. Oh the frustration of that woman!! Lol

Pozzle3166d ago

Protecting Natalya in the control room is one of my first memories of gamer rage. I don't know how many times I attempted that level before I finally beat it >_>

I threw my N64 controller and almost broke the analogue stick. It never quite worked the same since! lol

Infinite Themes: Slappin' pucks and pumpin' fists| Twinfinite

am not a fan of sports. Growing up as a “hardcore” gamer, sports never really appealed to me, especially watching them. While I understand the rules and regulations of a large majority of sports, they just don’t have the same draw to me as they do to others. Why would I freak out about the achievements of other people? So when it comes to playing a game based on activities that I don’t really watch? No thank you. Why write an article about a sports game that is five years old? Because, this small game has lead to me to becoming a screaming fanatic, if only for a short while.
