Nioh Review – The Jimquisition

Jim Sterling- I want a Nioh and I want one now!

Nioh got attention for its similarities to other titles, but it deserves to be remembered as its own special game, one that sees and raises the efforts presented by its inspirations.

So happy for Team Ninja, cant wait to dive into this game!

COMMENT-OF-THE-YEAR2652d ago (Edited 2652d ago )

Agreed man, Some of the games they have been associated with have been errrrr not so great so yeah, really nice to see some great news. From Jim no less. Don't agree with a lot of stuff he says but I do respect his reviews.

bouzebbal2652d ago

Which games they made that wasn't so great ???
I think the least successful was quantum theory, but other than that it's great stuff we're used to from the team

COMMENT-OF-THE-YEAR2652d ago (Edited 2652d ago )

Well, If you consider how they milked ninja Gaiden and dead or alive into the ground. Those games were great but new I.P's were needed sooner. They caught a break with Nintendo and Hyrule Warriors a bit and Dissidia but the last 5 or 6 years have been kinda meh until more recently.

Remember though, this is a personal opinion. So results will vary of course. Don't take offence.

Kingthrash3602652d ago (Edited 2652d ago )

3 totally differnt high rated exclusive games in a month. Man with horizon around the corner it may be the best 2 months (January & February no less...gaming's drought months) in gaming history.
This is why Playstation is only getting stronger. They are truly pumping games. And it's just getting started....persona 5 nier 2 look to be blockbusters as well. All before e3

*correction.....4 games...nioh, gravity rush 2, tales of beseria and yakuza 0....dam..great month. Add on RE 7(multiplat) and you can safely say that it's a great time to own a ps4.

Andreas-Sword2652d ago

Yes, Nioh is the best Action RPG 2017.

DanteVFenris6662652d ago

I think Nier looks way better but we will see.

jrshankill2652d ago

Why are people saying he gives harsh reviews?

DR4 8/10.
Pokemon S&M 8.5/10.
Yakuza 9.5/10
Gravity Rush 7.5/10
FF XV: 8/10
Watchdogs 2 9/10
Titanfall 2 9.5/10

Yeah, what a harsh critic he is.

Takwin2652d ago

He is tough, but fair. He definitely is weird and I don't enjoy his schtick, but his scores are right in line with the median metacritic score.

IamTylerDurden12652d ago

Wow. Nioh is an 87 on Metacritic on 23 reviews. The Jimquisition is a traditionally harsh reviewer so to get a 10/10 is remarkable. Nioh appears to be the truth.

What makes me even more excited for Nioh is how Team Ninja utilized the impressive capabilities of PS4 Pro to give us a myriad of resolution and framerate options including native 4K and 60fps. PS4 is cementing its legacy this year with an incredible lineup of software.

Tankbusta402652d ago

Sterling also gave a stellar review to Yakuza, he seems to favor Japanese games

G20WLY2652d ago (Edited 2652d ago )

Does he favour them or just enjoy them if they're good? Honest question. There have been some GREAT Japanese games recently.

Imalwaysright2652d ago (Edited 2652d ago )

Japanese gaming scene is coming back with a bang. Gravity Rush, TLG, RE7, Yakuza, Ni-oh and next we'll have Zelda, Nier, Persona 5 and Ni No Kuni :)

Edit

@ DragonDDark

Persona 5? https://www.youtube.com/wat...

DragonDDark2652d ago

@imalwaysright

You're right. I just can't wait for persona 5... Been waiting 3 years for that one. Since the winter 2014 announcement.

S2Killinit2652d ago

@imalwaysright
Don't forget Dragon Quest Builders AND Dragon Quest XIII

It's easy for nioh to utilize the Pro's capabilities since it isn't a graphically demanding game. Quite frankly, team ninja could do even more like making action mode run with a better resolution on the base PS4

IamTylerDurden12652d ago

Right... it was super easy for Team Ninja. I wouldn't say Fallout 4 is anymore graphically demanding than Nioh but for some reason the Pro patch has taken months and it isn't native 4K, nor does it have the wealth of Options that Nioh will have on Pro. Team Ninja deserves credit. You aren't a developer. The fact is, Team Ninja appears to have made a great game with a great Pro patch.

sullynathan2652d ago

Bethesda isn't a good developer, I don't know why you made that comparison. I don't deny that team ninja made a great game, perhaps you're seeing something that isn't there

Dragonscale2652d ago (Edited 2652d ago )

Who cares about the graphics when a game is this good? Talk about nitpicking. Anyhow the graphics are superb regardless.

sullynathan2652d ago

When you get into discussion about the Pro, graphics will be brought up

IamTylerDurden12652d ago

Yes, and the Pro appears to have done a hell of a job with Nioh. Native 4K..

trooper_2652d ago

There's nothing wrong with the graphics.

Ill be buying a pro this weekend and then getting Nioh day 1.i promised myself to at least finish Gravity rush 2 or Yakuza. The self control is weak in this one

jrshankill2652d ago

Native 4k and 60fps? No it doesn't.

Based on and judging by the demo, though the devs did admit that their game is directly inspired by From Software's Souls series, Nioh just oozes with identity and individuality. I can't wait to get this game next week!

Tankbusta402652d ago

Agreed. I hardly ever buy season passes especially not pre order them and after the demo I got the season pass because I loved the demo

TheVigilanteCode2652d ago

Eh, did they admit that? I mean their "game being directly inspired by From Software's Souls series"? I haven't seen any Team Ninja developer say that yet. If they did, please cite a source, because you might have mistook some social media comments as official.

The reviews I've read for this game, so far, seem to suggest that though it "looks" like Souls on the surface, but if you play it, it's completely different from the Souls genre, and more hinting towards Ninja Gaiden and Onimusha.

Gamist2dot02652d ago

Dammit! 5 days! FFFFFIVE DAYS! I hate having to wait 5 long days to play this game!

Concertoine2652d ago

Already waited 10 years, 5 days is nothin'

The Nioh franchise has sold over 6 million copies worldwide

Team Ninja: "The Nioh franchise has sold over 6 million copies worldwide now!"

FallenAngel1984972d ago

At 6 million NiOh is on the cusp of nearly outselling Ninja Gaiden’s 6.8 million with just only 2 titles under its belt

This could mean Team Ninja may see no reason to return to producing new NG games

CaptainHenry916971d ago

But what if a new Ninja Gaiden sells well?

FallenAngel1984971d ago (Edited 971d ago )

The latest Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection had sold 240,000 units worldwide at last count

Unfortunately that may not be as high enough a number to convince Team Ninja to also commit to continuing Ninja Gaiden alongside Dead or Alive and NiOh.

And when they aren’t working on those they’re focused on licensed properties like Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order and Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin.

I wish I were wrong but that may be how Tecmo Koei sees it. Hopefully they prove me wrong and produce Ninja Gaiden 4 at some point

Yi-Long971d ago

To be fair, does anyone still trust Team Ninja with Ninja Gaiden*?

Let’s be honest here, it was Itagaki who created Ninja Gaiden greatness, with NG1, NG Black (improved version of NG1), and Ninja Gaiden 2.

The Sigma versions of 1 & 2, done without Itagaki, while decent/good, never lived up to the originals, and NG3 was a mess.

And they half-assed the collection, so many huge fans of the series never bothered picking that up.

I’d be excited if Itagaki would announce a return to the action ninja genre. If Team Ninja would announce a NG4, I’d be skeptical.

To be fair, Team Ninja DID show they’re still capable of releasing greatness with the Nioh games, but with Ninja Gaiden, without Itagaki, they have never been able to reach the quality of NG Black again.

(* … does anyone still trust them with the DOA games, for that matter … !? )

deadfrag971d ago (Edited 971d ago )

Things are not seen from that stand point.Ninja Gaiden Never had a game produced for PS4 or Xbox One from the ground up.Nioh sold 6 milion because exposure and Marketing are way bigger this days than they were on PS3 and Xbox 360 generation. The Ninja Gaiden collection was never going to sell much since theres nothing new on them, this collection is actually worse to what was already available on Xbox 360 and can be play by BC on any Xbox One console.Ninja Gaiden needs a new game that shows new stuff and that gets backed in the marketing like Nioh. This collection games have already been played by anyone that likes Ninja Gaiden years ago it didnt bring nothing new to the table it was obvious that it would not sell very well.

ocelot07971d ago

That's great and it's now free on the epic game store.

FinalFantasyFanatic971d ago

I just picked it up a couple of hours ago, it was a nice surprise to see it there.

jznrpg971d ago

Well made games glad they did well .

Brazz971d ago

they deserve this, Nioh is a amazing game. Hopefully they will expand and make a more ambitious game and have even more sales.

northpaws1102d ago

Talking about Goku, I used to like him a lot, but he just became a selfish jerk that only want to fight and left his family behind to rot lol, at least we see Vegeta spent some time with family here and there lol

Teflon021101d ago

Goku's far from selfish. He's just an idiot with an addition.
Also Dragon Ball Z starts with Piccolo basically being Gohan's dad. Not sure how these things became a realization in 2021 lmao

Germaximus1102d ago

PS Now additions have been rocking for quite awhile now.

iwin861102d ago

Street Of Rage 4 is awesome. Big recommendation.

RosweeSon1101d ago

Just bought physical 😏🤷🏻‍♂️ 🤣 does look great tho.

1102d ago
LucasRuinedChildhood1101d ago

Nioh was given out on PS Plus around a year ago (most people who have PS Now also have PS Plus) and Jump Force is not particularly good. There's a big gap in quality between PS Plus and PS Now.

Teflon021101d ago

Streets of Rage is a fantastic game. Didn't know about Nioh though. I don't think I have it. Though I'd rather play the ps5 version in the future

Petebloodyonion1101d ago

Streets of Rage 4 is a must-play title if you like beat em up.
Also, not everyone has PS+ so Nioh is still a good game.
