Square Enix announces 'The Avengers project'

Big News: SquareEnix and Marvel announces a multi-game partnership leading with The Avengers project.

UltraNova2672d ago (Edited 2672d ago )

Hmmm episodic Marvel game adaptations inbound?

Edit: @ foxtrot

That makes at least two of us, provided they are worth picking up that is...

-Foxtrot2672d ago

If that happens then I'd wait for the collection.

Hitman shouldn't have gone that route.

NewMonday2672d ago (Edited 2672d ago )

according to Abriael it's from the developers of both Tomb Raider AND the studio that developed Deus Ex, so major talent involved

The 10th Rider2672d ago

Well, the studio that developed Dues Ex also made the Thief reboot, soooooo. Considering that the Dues Ex team just finished Mankind Divided, this very well may be what the team behind Thief have been up to.

I'll keep an open mind, of course, but it's good to keep expectations in check.

IamTylerDurden12672d ago

Hitman worked extremely well actually. It complemented the game, episodic content delivery isn't automatically bad.

_-EDMIX-_2672d ago

Hitman is still giving you a final version on the disk though.

You wanted to buy Hitman individually to test it out if you weren't sure you could do that

if you want to purchase it on disk as a final thing you can still do that

Im not seeing how this is ever going to benefit you by eliminating an option you weren't even going to use lol

https://www.amazon.com/Hitm...

It's very much coming in a format that you might like.

I'd rather have both then less options

Episodic content? What genre will this title be?does Marvel want something similar to SquareEnix's life is strange title? Anyways I hope this turns out to be something amazing.

EverydayJoe2672d ago

Just curious as to what made you think it was episodic? Because of the name or something more that I didn't see in the tweet?

UltraNova2672d ago

Marvel has lots of characters, universes; they release 2 films per year so the fact that they chose a dev who pioneered episodic games, in essence, and showed it works, kinda, drove me to the conclusion that they are thinking about episodic games that can be quickly pumped out to match their frequent film releases.

I might be wrong, of course😉

EverydayJoe2672d ago

Thanks for the reply @Ultra, and I see your point. I really hope that isn't the case as it will test my patients. Not a fan, and agree I will wait til it's done to get the collection and discounted if so.

Officialxandr2672d ago

Don't think so. I think Dontnod would have made the game. It'll probably be something more open-world or along those lines.

Genuine-User2672d ago

About time :D
I hope Crystal and Marvel do it justice.

Overload2672d ago

Eidos Montreal too. Which effectively means the planned sequels to Deus Ex might be canned.

Kotaku's Schreier: Eidos Montreal is making Tomb Raider and 2 different Marvel games
http://www.neogaf.com/forum...

Genuine-User2672d ago

Oh so they have several marvel projects in the line. Good stuff!

Overload2672d ago

Yep. Great news in that regard.

Concertoine2672d ago

Im blown out on super heroes in general and the idea of the talent at Eidos Montreal being relegated to this sounds like a waste. Hopefully its the B team that made Thief 4.

chrisx2672d ago

Square enix doesn't exactly bolster confidence I hope we are pleasantly surprised

IamTylerDurden12672d ago

These teams are extremely talented. Deus Ex and Hitman were fantastic.

_-EDMIX-_2672d ago (Edited 2672d ago )

Lol sure

Never mind that they're one of the biggest Japanese publishers the world....

Sure

2671d ago
-Foxtrot2672d ago (Edited 2672d ago )

Interesting but...and I'm honestly not saying this for fanboy bullshit I swear to god....wouldn't it have been better for them to do something with Sony as they are already doing Spiderman.

They could have built onto that and created a shared Universe like the films. Imagine Insomniac Games doing Spiderman, Sony Santa Monica do a Thor game, Sucker Punch a Hulk game, Sony Bend an Iron Man game and then Guerrilla Games an Ant man and the Wasp game. NaughtyDog then makes an Avengers game when they bring in Captain America.

Just seems a little strange to have a exclusive Spiderman game and then have this multiplatform Avengers project which probably will have a totally different world.

CyrusLemont2672d ago

Perhaps Sony did not want one of their exclusives to be handed over to the opposition because of the deal and stayed out of it. I'm stoked for Spiderman, but have no idea what to expect from this partnership. For all we know their vision could be to do something like Overwatch lol. I wouldn't mind an open-world RPG though, that'd be awesome.

OpieWinston2672d ago

Sony had the movie rights to Spiderman for so long. I imagine the reboot Spiderman MCU deal was Marvel giving them the Spiderman game rights. That's it though.

And Marvel moved away from Activision and seek out a publisher that could increase the brands value by expanding to multiple platforms. Hence the TT partnership.
And after Disney gave EA Star Wars game rights they knew they wouldn't be devoting much resources to Marvel. Square Enix is a solid choice.

-Foxtrot2672d ago

Aren't film rights different to game rights

It's like X-Men games they are still through Marvel, not Fox.

Genuine-User2672d ago

Sony still has the movie rights to Spider-Man.

Spider-Man: Homecoming - Distributed by Sony Pictures

OpieWinston2672d ago

@Foxtrot / Genuine-User. Yes they still have the movie rights. Because the deal was to allow Spiderman to be a part of multiple films including Civil War/Infinity War.

And they must've come to some sort of deal because there was no word of a payout by Disney/Marvel, which meant allowing them to make a Spiderman game must've been part of it.

Michiel19892672d ago

and Sony should magically create a new studio to work on it our of thin air.....
Please lets not let all of Sony AAA studios make marvel games......let them do what they do best: Work on their own IPs/create new ones.

I don't really think it's strange Spiderman is Sony exclusive they share the rights for spiderman with Disney or something like that.

xDealtwithIt2672d ago (Edited 2672d ago )

Well if that is the case why didn't Capcom go to Sony with Marvel vs Capcom Infinite, since Sony already has Spider-Man, why create a while separate fighting world?

How come everyone just doesn't go to Sony instead of doing their own thing?

vivid832672d ago

i know right i only have a ps4 but i think marvel ips should be on all consoles

Ogygian2672d ago

"I'm honestly not saying this for fanboy bullshit I swear to god"

Yes you are.

-Foxtrot2672d ago

Urm no I'm not. I'm trying to have a civil discussion for once which is why I made it clear it wasn't

FungLip2672d ago (Edited 2672d ago )

Nope! Nuh-uh. Nah. Nonononono. Nooooooooooo! A N and a O, NO!

goatking2672d ago

Sony owns spiderman though, not marvel, which is why the spiderman game is even happening. Spiderman is the only superhero game they can do without doing what square enix is doing, making a deal with marvel/disney.

Kribwalker2672d ago

Actually Sony only owned the rights to Spider-Man movies, that changed when marvel negotiated the rights back for Spider-Man to go u to the avengers

jaymacx2672d ago

Marvel (disney) isn't trying to give Sony more control. They moved on from Activision to SE and it will probably be for the best. Remember they already have a tight relationship due to Kingdom Hearts.

Nitrowolf22672d ago (Edited 2672d ago )

I think the keyword here is multiple marvel games.

Marvel is probably riding on Sony to do justice for propably their biggest marvel character, but i can see why they wouldnt go with Sony again and it wouldnt have anything to do with the lack of quality of anything.

Basically, the way i see this is that disney thought square Enix was a better choice to help them pump out Marvel games on a speedy timeframe while hopefully making a acceptable product (look at the team working on it). They are essentially effectivily pulling that Activisionn plug and bring their property to hopefully better talent that can get products out in a fast manner.

Seems Disney wants to have quick yearly releases if possible.
Thats how i see it anyway

rainslacker2672d ago

Disney's had a long working relationship with SE. Same with EA. Id be surprised if they went with other devs, like I was when Sony got exclusive game rights to Spider-man, but there was obviously something more behind the scenes there.

Outside_ofthe_Box2672d ago

Stop it.

First off the games would only be good if those studios want to make the games. If they're forced to do it the end result will be terrible. Do you really think Naughty Dog wants to make an Avengers game lol? I'd rather they make whatever their passion tells them to make.

SE is a good choice here. They have a very good recent track record. Not like they went with EA or something. I'm looking forward to this.

XXanderXX2672d ago (Edited 2672d ago )

That would be one sided and would definitely be unfair to the Marvel consumer base .
Forcing them to become consumers of a product they rather not support or don't like .
For example i myself would be pissed to such a notion , seeing how I have been a marvel fan before any one platform existed .

_-EDMIX-_2672d ago

Yes I'm sorry but I don't see sony-computer-entertainment devoting almost all of their major teams to properties they do not own.

Sony has stopped at practice and extremely long time ago like literally close to 17 years ago

Sony wasn't even going to fund or publish Sunset Overdrive unless they owned the property

I think Spider-Man is a big exception because of the property and we don't even know how huge that deal might be for all we know Sony might retain the intellectual property in regards to Spiderman being a video game.

Tapani2672d ago

Could be interesting if this is like an adult version of mainstream movies + final fantasy, the Kingdom Hearts version of Marvel + Final Fantasy or something like that.

Unfortunately, Ninja Theory Isn't Actually Safe From Microsoft

Ninja Theory might have games in the pipeline, but that doesn't mean Xbox won't close it for no reason

rlow16h ago

Alot of speculation on their part. Ninja Theory has two games that have been green lighted and are in the works. Yes it’s always a possibility they could be closed but no matter how you feel about the Senua games. They do make a quality game. I personally think MS is going lay low for a bit, after the firestorm they experienced last week.

darthv724h ago

I really hope one of them is a long awaited sequel of heavenly sword or enslaved. Both are good games that deserve a 2nd chance... or at least a reboot.

blackblades2h ago

I'm 100% doubt its heavenly sword for obvious reason and Enslave 99% doubt it.

romulus231h ago

"Sony Computer Entertainment retains the intellectual property of Heavenly Sword", so that's not happening. Sony should let Santa Monica Studios make a Heavenly Sword sequel.

Rynxie1h ago

Santa Monica is a great studio, but I would rather the minds behind the original make it (ninja theory). I never liked sequels that were done by someone else, they are usually never as good as the original.

Rynxie1h ago

They make quality games, but they're usually hit or miss. Either they are average, or they are awesome. However, besides heavenly sword and DMC, they aren't big sellers either. Ms is as big of a corporation as it gets. If ninja theory isn't making them money, they will shut them down. Simple as that.

Einhander19725h ago

It's not for no reason.

The reason is they made two games that were underwhelming (Bleeding Edge) and didn't/aren't going to grow the user base for game pass.

They spent 5-7 years and this was what they produced, it's easy to see how they would be on the short list for termination at this point.

Sciurus_vulgaris5h ago

One thing to point out was that all the recently closed studios were under Bethesda. Before being purchased by MS, Bethesda had a slew of poor or under performing titles (Evil Within 2, Prey (2017), Wolfenstein: The New Colossus, Young Blood, and initially Fallout 76 ). I don’t think, Ghost Wire Tokyo, Deathloop, Redfall and sadly even High-Fi: Rush performed well after the buyout.

Einhander19724h ago(Edited 4h ago)

I bet this game with a 5-7 year dev cycle being launched directly onto game pass is going to generate less tangible cash profit than any of those games.

I'm sure Microsoft will brag about players or sword swings or some other pointless statistic, but those don't make cash money.

Lightning774h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Apparently Ninja Theory is safe From being closed down https://www.gamespot.com/ar...

Already working on a new game. They are a 80 person team and relatively inexpensive I suppose to any other publisher

Buuuuut.

Yeaah sorry this is MS, I don't believe anything MS says. They have to be joking if they think anyone will believe them besides gullible Xbox fanboys. Once again MS needs to earn my trust back. Just when they earn some trust back, they always seem to destroy it and have to work to get it back. I still think they're getting shut down and canceling whatever game they're making because the game won't sell, again MS fault for not advertising it.. This company man...

FPSRUSSIA4h ago

the article talks about that to i recommend checking it out when you get a chance.

romulus231h ago

Tango was probably working on something new as well.

Knightofelemia4h ago

I don't see Microsoft shutting off the lights to Ninja Theory. As a studio they actually have talent and have released some decent games. I love Enslaved maybe a sleeper hit but it's one of my favorites. Only way I see Microsoft shutting off the lights is if Ninja Theory releases games that sink faster then a lead weight. And there are fans of Ninja Theory one thing I would hate to see is Ninja Theory ending up like Bioware. Loosing all their talent and being a former shell of what they use to be.

Elda1h ago

Never say never. Tango Gameswork were just as talented as Ninja Theory & they were shut down.

shaenoide58m ago

To be honest for Microsoft (not Microsoft gaming) it's all about making for the 70 billion purchase of AKB. No matter how good the games are. If they don't generate sales or new gamepass subs the studios can be shutted down.

Rynxie56m ago(Edited 55m ago)

Yes, they make decent games, but do they sell? Unfortunately, no. Heavenly sword sold 1.5 million, even when the ps3 had a much lower install base than the 360. However, it's not a ninja theory ip. Enslaved sold poorly. DMC, sold well, but that's also not a ninja theory ip. Hellblade was a hit, but in my opinion, barely. Hellblade 2, unfortunately, might be a flop. There's no bigger corporation than Ms, they are as corporate as they come. If ninja theory isn't making them money, they will get shut down and their ips giving to another studio.

Elda1h ago

It was just announced that MS gave NT the greenlight for its next game. I just hope it's not another Hellblade. https://www.yahoo.com/tech/...

shaenoide57m ago

Tango was working on a new game.
