Can The Surge Truly Deliver A Sci-Fi Dark Souls Experience?

Deck13, the developer behind 2014's Souls-like Lords Of The Fallen, are working on a new action RPG called The Surge.

Well, I'm pretty enjoy Lord of The Fallen. So yeah, I will support this game. Besides, I'm freaking love Sci fi.

mikeslemonade2673d ago

How can this game look better than Mass Effect 4? Just shows how crappy ME4 graphics are.

IamTylerDurden12673d ago

Of course it can. Lords of the Fallen delivered a solid Dark Souls experience, so i expect The Surge to improve upon Lords of the Fallen but in a Sci Fi setting. Deck13 said that they used the same formula but they've evolved it and added new elements.

This game has been on my radar for a while. I love how u can target specific body parts in combat and then chop them off and take the loot. The mech suits provide more mobility to combat than in Lords of the Fallen.

I'm hoping FromSoftware does a Sci-Fi Dark Souls type game themselves

Dark Souls - Medieval
Bloodborne - Gothic
??? - Sci-Fi
??? - Modern
etc

sullynathan2673d ago

FROM is finished with Souls games and that is a good thing.

Nathan_Hale532673d ago

Why is that a good thing? It is one of my favorite series along with many other people.

sullynathan2673d ago

It's a good thing because they can now work on a different game

ziggurcat2673d ago

Bloodborne is more Regency/Victorian era - the period for Gothic architecture occurred in the 12th century, and would have been within the Medieval period of History (which was the 5th - 15th centuries).

Paytaa2673d ago (Edited 2673d ago )

I'd say it's a mix of Lovecraftian, Gothic, and Victorian. Bloodborne isn't set in a real world past setting, just inspired by different eras and concepts.

Still craving for that Bloodborne II.

OT: The Surge looks cool. Wasn't a fan of LOTF gameplay after playing Souls games, but maybe this plays better and has an interesting world to explore.

ziggurcat2673d ago (Edited 2673d ago )

@paytaa

oh, i understand that it's not set in a real world past setting, but stylistically in terms of the fashion/majority of the architecture in the game (i.e. the regular housing, etc...), it's closer to those eras than gothic/medieval. The guns in the game, especially, are late 18th/early 19th century-inspired.

Krussail2673d ago

What I saw of the gameplay looks really impressive. Hoping for a major leap over LOTF

20live2673d ago

Yeah looks pretty damn good

Summons752673d ago

Well if they want to ripoff the Souls games they should at least fix the controls. Didn't care for LOTF becasue of the controls and them ripping off the Souls game too much. At least look at Nioh, that may not have had the greatest demos but they at least tried to differentiate themselves from the Souls games...clearly a ripoff but does enough things differently that it stands on it's own.

sullynathan2673d ago

NiOh isn't a rip off and is from a studio already experienced with making character action hack and slash games these guys don't know what they're doing

IamTylerDurden12673d ago

The Nioh alpha and beta demos were pretty good actually, and they were legit alpha/betas and not a demo of the final build released two weeks prior to release.

Lords of the Fallen had solid combat and controls. It just depended on how you built your character, class, weapon, and armor loadout. The combat was strategic and the weapons had real impact when you landed shots on enemies.

Also, just bc a game chooses/copies a specific genre doesn't make it bad. Salt n Sanctuary IS a 2D Dark Souls, Ska Studios admits that. However, Salt n sSanctuary is terrific game regardless. Dante's Inferno was a God of War clone, yet it was still very good. Bulletstorm copied Gears in many ways but was still a solid game.

sullynathan2671d ago

Lords of the fallen has bad combat and poor controls. It's a sloppy mess

sullynathan2673d ago

Lmao, these guys made lords of the fallen? This game is going to be trash.

Goldby2673d ago

clearly you didnt play the alpha or beta

sullynathan2673d ago

I didn't I played their previous game

Goldby2673d ago

so then you have no basis to your statement.

just wanted to throw that on the table

IamTylerDurden12673d ago

LotF was excellent. The combat, visuals, and art were at least on par with Dark Souls II and in some ways better. The budget restraints that Deck13 faced only affected world size and voice acting, but the actual game was solid.

sullynathan2673d ago

Lords of the fallen was completely bad

These mods enable God Mode for both The Surge and Lords of the Fallen

DSOGaming writes: "Lords of the Fallen was one of the first successful Souls-like games. LOTF was created by Deck13 Interactive and CI Games, with the former creating another Souls-like game, The Surge. And earlier this month, modder ‘Jeff B’ released two mods that enable a God Mode to them."
