Scalebound's Cancellation Highlights Xbox One's Poor 2017 Lineup

Scalebound has been cancelled, with the Xbox One now suffering from a very underwhelming 2017 lineup as a result.

The thing is, the variety was there. With Scalebound being cancelled, that suffers majorly.

I mean, I don't even know if crackdown is going to be any good. I was hopeful for its cloud tech however. With Scalebound getting cancelled so late in the day, nothing is now safe to be released.

Generally, it's not that great a year. Compared to PS4, it's really weak.

ArchangelMike2684d ago

I wonder if it's a sign that Microsoft are reallocating resources to Scorpio development? But yeah, they need to start understanding that you need good software to push the hardware.

Overload2684d ago (Edited 2684d ago )

The more people talk about Scorpio, the more it sounds like a next gen console.

People talk about Crackdown as a launch title, suggest Scalebound has been cancelled on Xbox One for Scorpio, talk about allocating resources to it, holding back new games to show at the unveiling and so on.

People have came a long way.

Gazondaily2684d ago

I don't think it's that. I think something deeper is going on with their internal workings on the software development side of things.

E3 will reveal a lot.

Overload2684d ago

"E3 will reveal a lot."

Yes it will.

Things aren't looking good. This is the guy who was leaking the details about Platinum Games yesterday.

wutang4ever2684d ago (Edited 2684d ago )

I think the scorpio will not be main stream enough to keep MS afloat plus the cancellation of 3 new ips Phantom dust, Scale bound, and Fables Legends are not a good sign and will weaken consumer confidence.

343_Guilty_Spark2684d ago

Scorpio games are just Xbox one games with higher fidelity.

kayoss2684d ago

I honestly feel that by making multiple ports for PC, xbox one, xbox one S, and now Scorpio is taking a toll on the development team. But thats just my speculations.

darthv722684d ago

It would be nice if any future games released for the xbox family of systems (PC included) were on one disc. You put that disc into an xb1, xb1s, scorpio, PC and the appropriate game assets install. A universal media disc that just works across the board for the xbox brand.

Simple, logical, perfect.

christocolus2684d ago

@overload

You should have kept reading further. The guy says he knows nothing about MS future games line up. He was only referring to hardware (Scorpio) not games.

http://m.neogaf.com/showpos...

Also Crackdown is coming along nicely.

WelkinCole2684d ago (Edited 2684d ago )

@overload. I have been saying forever that Scorpio is MS next gen console. It will be close to 6 times the power of the X1 which was the same leap from the X360 to X1. It will have literally every upgraded components including ram and processor etc.

I mean who announces a console revision 18 months out from its launch?. You only do that for new console launch because you don't want your console sales to slow down. You only do that if you know your sales have peaked and you have nothing else to lose. Same when you know its time for a new hardware after peak or when you know its a lost cause like the WiiU and now switch.

Truth is MS have thrown everything they had at competition but they came up short. It was wait until we launch in most country. Then it was cloud compute. Then it was price drop early. The it was the removal of Kinetic. Then it was Phil. Then it was BC. Then it was the greatest xbox launch in history. Then it was Xbox on windows. Halo, Gears.

Nothing worked. They knew they have ran out of ammo. There really was only one other option. Just like Nintendo with the WiiU and now switch. They knew they have to cut their loss and start with a new console because its their only option.

What I hate though is how sneaky they have been and the gullible xbox fans have taken it hook line and sinker. Common sense dictates that it is a new console launch in everything but name.

It was the only Japanese exclusive they had. Cant imagine how much money and time was wasted. They shouldve delayed the PC version. I wasnt against the W10 thing but i am now. All of MS' games have been delayed or released in poor condition to get that W10 bullet point.

DillyDilly2684d ago

95 % of games are released poorly & needs patching after release either way

equal_youth2684d ago

Hopefully this won't hurt Platinum Games to much. Would be shame if they would have to cut jobs. I hope they already have a new deal with Nintendo for another Bayonetta entry or even a new wonderful 101 game. A new Ip would also be welcome.

Concertoine2684d ago (Edited 2684d ago )

@TheRandomOne

Yeah it is pretty ridiculous. But rarely do games as poorly optimized as Recore come. And that's an EXCLUSIVE. Not only was it delayed 5 months, but it came out buggy and im pretty sure the PC version drained resources.

Most of MS' big games have felt half baked lately. Only the Forza games are really consistently solid.

G20WLY2684d ago

I agree, it feels like they're putting Windows 10 before Xbox and it's user base. A while ago, there were rumours that (to MS) the Xbox brand is just a tool to get gamers on to Windows 10 PCs.

I'm not saying this is the case, but as others have pointed out, W10 seems to be a factor in delaying and even cancelling games that Xbox console gamers could otherwise enjoy. This is not a way to get consumers to trust your products.

SpaceRanger2684d ago

But it's nothing new. This has been the case for more than just this year for MS. Variety year over year has been dismal at best with major exclusives being centered on (gears, forza, halo).

It's a short term gain, long term loss when MS does stuff like this. Investors and gamers buy into the hype of new games announced...then the rug is pulled from underneath after a while and replaced with different hype (in this case, Scorpio). It's a rinse and repeat cycle from there.

lelo2play2684d ago (Edited 2684d ago )

Yep, Microsoft's line-up for 2017 is really weak.

morganfell2684d ago (Edited 2684d ago )

"The thing is, the variety was there. With Scalebound being cancelled, that suffers majorly."

If the loss of one game causes a year's lineup to suffer "majorly" then the variety actually wasn't there. No hardware manufacturer should ever have a year where their lineup hinges on multiplatform games or two or three titles. Or at the very least they should not find themselves in a position where the loss of a single title causes such a devastating blow. And I mean no hardware manufacturer be they Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft.

What is worse for MS, and I have always held this opinion, is they now have no exclusives left. Scalebound was not one either as it was also slated for Windows but it only serves to highlight the reasons for simply upgrading a PC and still being able to avail one's self of the Xbox lineup rather than purchasing Scorpio. It was stated elsewhere and I agree with the idea and have for some time that the move to PC and even Scorpio itself are signs of MS Game Division shifting away from strictly being a console manufacturer. Xbox will become a means to increase sales of the Windows Operating System as well as the entire Redmond ecosystem. That is after all where they truly generate revenue.

kayoss2684d ago

This is the trend with Microsoft, when a new console is about to be released, they tend to kick the current to the side. it happened with the xbox, xbox 360, now xbox One.

Its looking like a very bleak 2017 for xbox compared to Ps4. Ms just making it so easy for Sony. Ninty has the chance to snatch up 2nd place this year

Doopy2684d ago (Edited 2684d ago )

Nintendo switch will be a flop. They don't have the guarantee third party support and xbox / ps4 will be cheaper than the switch.

@Nyxus, tell me how all those strong exclusives helped Nintendo out with the Wii U. Exclusives are becoming more and more irrelevant. You don't think ps4 hit 50 million because of uncharted 4 and bloodborne do you? People buy consoles for the big third party games. Not too mention everyone already has an xbox one and ps4 so no point putting down 250 for a switch.

@asmith2306
The biggest selling ps4 exclusive was uncharted 4 and the sells didn't even make up 10% of PS4 install base and that game was massively bundled so the numbers are inflated regarding it. Third party games is the biggest factor. After that it is where your friends are at, controller preference, brand preference, friends are at, online preference, ect.

@Fritz_alexander
You can buy an xbox one or ps4 cheaper than 250 dollars online easily. It also includes a big AAA game usually as well like Uncharted, Gears, Division, Tomb Raider, ect.

Nyxus2684d ago

But they will have a strong line-up of exclusives (by Nintendo), something the Xbox doesn't have.

fritz_alexander132684d ago

Switch will launch at US$249. That's already as cheap as, if not cheaper than both of them.

equal_youth2684d ago

I can only speak for myself and repeat what my close friends are saying but when we talk about new purchases nobody even mentions the scorpio simply because we can play those games on PC. When it comes to the switch we wait and see how Nintendo implements social features like party chat and so on.

nitus102684d ago

@Nyxus

First party exclusives will definitely help launch the Nintendo Switch but to keep that momentum going they will need third party support and unfortunately most AAA games that can run on the PS4 including the XB1 may be graphically inferior to what can be displayed on the Switch. For some people that may not be an issue although for others that may not be acceptable.

Annother, issue could be that the third party games that get ported to the switch may be older games and again some people may not care but others will especially if they already have that game on either their PS4 and/or XB1.

asmith23062684d ago

"People buy consoles for the big third party games" - no they don't. They look at how much the exclusives will complement the third party library. e.g. if I want BF1, am I going to buy a console that has exclusives like Uncharted 4 or Gears 4?

Knight4k

You have to understand that games like the last of us 2, spiderman , detriot will happen and release soon.. Detriot may get a 2017 release... Last of us 2 will be around 2018 .. Spiderman also will happen by next year, same with GOD OF WAR and so on... These games aint cancelled and Gamers are excited that at some point these games will release.. and E3 2017 Sony gonna again NAIL it fasho, but whats bothering me is how will MS market their Scorpio if games gets cancelled, no new IP etc. Software pushes the Hardware and Sony is just doing that. Also what about CRACKDOWN 3 , rumours says the development is not coming up well.. E3 talks about future projects but MS needs to show something good and not rely on yearly Forza always..

I've always said MS isn't competing with Sony for first place. MS is competing with Nintendo for second.

2684d ago Replies(2)
Bennibop2684d ago

Not sure what has happened to Microsoft this gen, they are just not competitive. They have launch very few 1St party games since the launch of the one and I do see any reason this would change for Scorpio. If they ditch of one support I am not sure why anyone would support them.

Liqu1d2684d ago

Don Mattrick and Sony happened. The XB1's reveal was disastrous and Sony were happy to take advantage of every mistake Microsoft made. I'm not even sure MS know why Sony have been so successful this gen. Right now they're chasing power instead of expanding there 1st party studios and bringing out new IPs.

2684d ago
asmith23062684d ago

This gen? They're the same idiots who rammed Kinect down people's throats and told them what experiences they should be having on a console, all summed up at their disastrous X1 reveal. They switched their tune but it's the same terrible band beneath it.

Doomeduk2684d ago

Couldn't agree more IMO MS thought after their success with 360 and Sony in kind of a hole cash wise they were on to a garunteed winner with XBone , and so were some devs insomniac and SE and EA spring to mind thinking MS were gonna steam roll Sony into the ground and they stay top with studios kicking their door down with exclusive deals that they won't have to have loads of their game studios , kinect .. gamers will love it ,24 h check in ..nah were the best so gamers will love it and gamers won't be able to sell their game they own ! ...screw em gamers love us, for everyone else there is the 360 WRONG .....BOOM Sony does what it does best releases the ps4 with more power so much better looking IMO with gamers knowing diverse software will arrive by their OWN studios and games releasing when they are done not rushed yea yea call me a fan boy but I got og Xbox day 1 and 360 but after the shite coming out of MS at reveal I held off XB1 happy now I did ..

deafdani2684d ago

It's not like the Xbox 360 was any different, really. This is the reason why I didn't buy a Xbox One this gen, because my experience with the 360 left much to be desired.

I bought a 360 mainly for Mass Effect, Limbo, Super Meat Boy and 'Splosion Man.

Mass Effect and Limbo eventually came out for PS3, SMB eventually came out for Wii U and PS4. That only left me with 'Splosion Man...

In the end, a lot of Xbox exclusives came out for the competition, in one way or another. The way I see it, Microsoft never really had many TRUE exclusives to their consoles, because they have very little first party output.

So, it just isn't worth it to get a Xbox unless you're a hardcore Halo, Forza and Gears fan. Those are the only AAA Microsoft IPs that are locked exclusives for them, because they own them. And seeing how I have very little interest on those franchises, the Xbox One was never that appealing to me.

Xbox One only had 3 games that really got my attention: Ori and the Blind Forest, Cuphead, and Scalebound. The latter has been cancelled, and the other 2 are / will be available on PC anyway.

:/

Forget about Scalebound and Bayonetta 3, Platinum should be working on a Vanquish sequel

Why this criminally underrated shooter should share the spotlight with Platinum’s finest.

ZeekQuattro826d ago

They should be working to getting games out on a timely matter not adding more games to the pile. I used to be a big fan of Platinum but their game turn out rate is atrocious these days. The games I want are no where to be seen and what is releasing is retro looking games no one asked for. I'm all for retro style games but not at the cost of bigger games sitting on the back burner for years at a time.

MIDGETonSTILTS17825d ago

Obvs…. Vanquish is da bomb 🤙

Scalebound Deserves A Second Chance

PlatinumGames wants to bring Scalebound back, and Microsoft should listen.

“Excitement” and “interest” in Scalebound seemed to only occur after it was canceled… However, IO interactive is rumoured to be developing a game involving Dragons for Xbox Studios. So maybe IO Interactive’s title could be branded as Scalebound.

Bathyj825d ago

I agree. The game looked terrible. People only got upset because it's cancellation was a dig at Microsoft but I was with them on this one. Better to cancel a game then release a bad one. Then again someone might have liked it. I don't speak for everyone.

Kados825d ago (Edited 825d ago )

Personally was looking forward to it prior to cancellation. It looked a little rough/janky, but it was still very early in development, so i figured it would improve before launch.

Orpheo825d ago

I think the cancellation was a smart move. The main character looks cool, like Nero from "Devil May Cry 4," but the gameplay looked so boring I was yawning.

825d ago
phoenixwing825d ago

I like platinum as a dev but let's be honest they were doing their low tier work on the game which they're notorious for. They'll either do S tier perfection work or they'll do whatever to just get by for the contract they have. Maybe that's changed but they were doing low tier for microsoft and microsoft called them out on it and cancelled the project. I don't blame microsoft one bit for doing that. It was basically a whatever project for platinum while they worked on the other game at the time, i forget which one it was but it was just miles better.

MadLad825d ago

Microsoft already owns the IP, has the design docs, and has a playable build. Hand the project off to an internal team or another 3rd party.
Why give a second chance to a team that phoned in development and filtered their funds into other projects?

I like Platinum, but their management can be really shady.

You couldn't pay me to ever play another Halo, Forza or Gears. Those games were so uninteresting last gen for me I don't know if I will ever get another Xbox (sold my One X) even though I prefer their controller and console features over my PS5. I actually bought a Xbox One even though I already had a PS4 expecting Scalebound and Sea of Thieves to be amazing and we all know how that turned out.
