Is There Any Need For An Uncharted Film?

With the Assassin’s Creed film released, rumbles over further film adaptations of video games have returned.  As a franchise, Uncharted has provided moments that force you to soak in the scene. For years now, I’ve referred to Uncharted 2 and 3 as the accumulation of what mainstream video games have aimed to be.

I don't think there is, i mean the games fill the space pretty nicely. There's not much they could add through a film, bar a few extra eyes on the games

Fist4achin2695d ago

Need, no. Could it be cool if done well? Absolutely. Unfortunately. A lot of video games don't translate well to the big screen. I didn't mind the first resident evil and the hitman movie.

Kingthrash3602695d ago

I think it's the directors fault. I think they should, I don't know ..play through the game or maybe be a fan of the game to understand why people love it. too many times I've seen movies being made from video games and you can tell they get why the game was attractive to begin with. seems like it's just a cash grab for them, they heard of the game but they don't actually know what the game is about. Resident Evil should have been a horror flick ...that's what it should have been. it's a horror game why make it an action flick? I just don't understand why they don't understand.

DivoJones2695d ago

Didn't really work well for Ratchet and Clank.. the game had a much better reception than the movie intended to spark interest in the game. Seems especially ironic considering Uncharted is influenced significantly by cinema.. so it'd be another case of a movie based on a game based on a movie. Sony would be wise to save their money and skip making this movie altogether.

fenome2694d ago

Exactly. The games are awesome because it's interactive media, it's like you actually get to play a part in this story. If a movie is actually done right then that would be cool, but it's not even close to the same experience.

To me it is like the Logan's Run remake. I have been hearing about it for so many years and nothing ever happens. I will believe it when the cameras roll. Also unless Assassin's Creed does well overseas it will be a costly error as it has done poorly in the U.S. the studio is banking on a strong overseas Box Office to turn a profit and ensure the sequels.

PixelGateUk2695d ago

They're probably just banking on China at this point

Summons752695d ago

No, we have Indiana Jones. Plus it's been in production hell for years with no sign of moving forward.

FallenAngel19842695d ago

Do we need a Metal Gear Solid movie?

Most videogame movie adaptations are suffering for a reason

morganfell2695d ago

They suffer because Hollywood sees money. That is all they see. They see the popularity of the game and think paycheck. They buy the rights and the first thing they do is disembowel the IP to remove the very thing that made the game great and attractive in the first place. Then when the movie inevitably fails they decry games as an effective foundation for a film.

These clown executives and financiers can't learn the lesson with games that Marvel has learned with their comics. They do not comprehend the fact games do not need to be radically altered for movie form because games are no longer the domain of the geeks. Games are mainstream and therefore a truer transition of the title to celluloid will yield wonderful results. Instead these supposed experts fail to understand the target demographic and think only the skeleton of the game is worthy of translation and then only if it is drastically made over.

PixelGateUk2695d ago

I don't think you could make the Metal Gear plot lines into anything beyond the game, unless it was some weird ass art house thing. Kojima just stomping on fruit screaming 'war'

KickSpinFilter2695d ago (Edited 2695d ago )

Nope...we have Indiana Jones, which was the main inspiration for Tomb Raider and especially Uncharted.
The Last of Us would be a much better film, really haven't seen that kinda twist with the mold spores. :]

Uncharted, Not The Last of Us, is Naughty Dog’s True Backbone

The Last of Us is easily Naughty Dog's most popular IP, but Uncharted deserves as much praise if not more for being its guinea pig all the while.

...and here I was thinking it was Way of the Warrior. All the mo-cap they cut their teeth on to refine their skills later for such things like Uncharted and LoU.

As a fun little side project... I'd love to see them take a crack at Way of the Warrior 2.

specialguest275d ago

Way of the Warrior was impressive looking on video game magazines. I remember wishing I could play it on the 3DO. So many years later I finally got to see the gameplay on the internet and it was complete trash 😂. Nothing like MK

anast275d ago

Both great IPs, some of the best in gaming.

jznrpg275d ago (Edited 275d ago )

Can’t it be that all of their games are their backbone? Who cares anyway as long as they make good games I’ll buy them.

MIDGETonSTILTS17275d ago

I loved Uncharted 2, and none of the others compare IMO.

Fluke_Skywalker275d ago

I recently replayed them all and I used to think 2 was the best but now I'd definitely say 4 is the best. Not that there's much in it, they're all amazing. But 4 is the best.

-Foxtrot275d ago

Nah

Uncharted 2 had better pacing, Elena and Sully were featured far more, Nadine was an awful villain compared to Harry Flynn and it also had a fantastic multiplayer on top where Uncharted 4 ruined it making it into an over the top arcade shooter with gimmicks.

MIDGETonSTILTS17274d ago

I liked the expansion to 4 more than 4 itself. 4 was great for me too, did alotta new stuff…

But….

SPOILERS

Nothing beats the unexpected twist at the end of 2.

mastershredder275d ago

I liked it when the games were fun and ridiculous, not the sooty TV-caliber dramas that use Uncharted as a foundation.

TricksterArrow275d ago

I like both types of games. The great thing about games is how diverse they can be and how I can pop in whatever fills my mood at any given time.

Espangerish275d ago

I agree. Uncharted 4 was the least fun. Preferred the simpler fun focussed older versions

Naughty Dog's Uncharted Might be Dead & That's Ok

Devin Rardin: Leaving the Uncharted series behind is a good move for Naughty Dog, allowing them to move forward and explore broader horizons.

Its not dead, it's retired theres a difference.

LeeFender468d ago

Naughty Dog's Uncharted is dead. Not the franchise, the franchise is being worked on by another studio now. We never claimed that the franchise was dead.

blackblades468d ago

I missed read but still lets just say its retired. You never know they might one day not in our lifetime go back to it.

_SilverHawk_467d ago

Why would any company shelve a very successful franchise now especially the uncharted series that also had a successful film. Uncharted isn't gone

smolinsk466d ago (Edited 466d ago )

It's Dead when it's Dead but naughty dog as said my very likely one Day make another one. Absolutely not off the tabel. It's retired that's it.

You should know better then to call something Dead. With all the feeling's around this Game.

sammarshall102467d ago

Whoever makes Uncharted 5 will have great support from Sony's Visual Arts studio who helps with every Naughty Dog game so the IP will be fine indeed

wiz7191466d ago

It won’t be the same , Naughty Dog has a certain charm to them ..

Thundercat77466d ago

Uncharted will be back with a new saga and probably new protagonist.

S2Killinit466d ago

Uncharted will live long in my memory.

TheEnigma313466d ago (Edited 466d ago )

It finished strong and didn't overstay it's welcome. ND needs to work on something else anyways. Just hopefully Drakes story is done. I would love a young sully though.

Unknown_Gamer5794466d ago

That’s ND’s MO, and I respect that. After the 6th gen, many were put out that Jak and Daxter was retired, but if ND kept focusing on that we likely wouldn’t have gotten Uncharted. I respect a company who knows when to end a series so they can focus on something new, and here’s hoping whatever they create next will be just as amazing.

Jax and Daxter 4 be nice
