PlayStation Plus free games lineup for January is an excellent start to 2017

MWEB GameZone writes: "Next month's PlayStation Plus free games are worth playing. Don't knock it before you try it, there are some real gems for you to enjoy."

Sillicur2702d ago

Hopefully you enjoyed them!

senorfartcushion2700d ago

Yes. Hopefully you still do enjoy them, too.

RpgSama2701d ago

Titán Souls is great, Day of the Tentacle is one of the best adventure games ever made and This War of Mine looks super fun, I see myself playing these "smaller" games in between the big ones as palate cleansers.
I understand people wanting AAA every month, we will get there, but me personally I still haven't had time to play Resident Evil Remake, Lords of the Fallen or Transformers: Devastation, to name a few.

_-EDMIX-_2701d ago

If you've never played the Resident Evil remake before, please stop what you're doing and help yourself!

Pennywise1382701d ago

I would also recommend playing the Resident Evil Remake asap if you never have before. It really holds up well. Even though the controls have always felt strange it actually adds to the tension in a good way.

RpgSama2701d ago (Edited 2701d ago )

@_-EDMIX-_ and @Pennywise138

I played the original Resident Evil on PS1 and the Remake on the GC, I want to play it again after so many years, but too many games, so little time XD.

P.s: Waiting anxiously to see what they do with the Remake of Resident Evil 2, my favorite game in the series.

XanderZane2701d ago (Edited 2701d ago )

Only a couple of them worth owning. Thankfully they are all FREE to try now. Was hoping for more games like Transformers Devastation. Was hoping for TLOU Remastered or Until Dawn. Something to push us into 2017 with a smile on our faces.

Deadpooled2701d ago

If TLOU Remastered comes on PS Plus soon I would be marking out for like a week, jump on the roof and scream out my excitement to the world.

johnddoe2701d ago

Transformer's Devastation has already been released as a free game in PS+. Think that was 3 months ago.

XanderZane2701d ago (Edited 2700d ago )

@johnddoe
No kidding. That's why I said, "I was hoping to get MORE GAMES LIKE Transformers Devastation for PS+. Already download this game on my PS4.

@jznrpg
That's not the point though. I don't own TLOU Remastered, Until Dawn or Knack. The point is there are still better games Sony could offer for PSPlus besides on the very average Indie games. Last month wasn't a whole lot better either.

jznrpg2700d ago

You could have bought those games for dirt cheap. I got both for about 10$

Sm30002700d ago

Agreed. Your comment should be upvote dominant.
Let's seee MS offering I bet it's better. Sony Sony Sony. Getting complacent been complacent

Garbage..... -_- They really need to step this up, the free games are becoming seriously Lame.. :(

CorndogBurglar2700d ago

These aren't garbage games at all though.

They may not be what YOU want. But they are very good and fun games.

JackBNimble2700d ago

You want AAA games every month for $60 a year?
You get more then what you paid for your subscription, you just got to quit being so entitled.

I think some people are more upset with the price hike. Look at the article with the October games being revealed and you'll see many people say the price hike is justified if Sony continues to have bigger games in their Plus lineup. Seeing only indie titles the last 2 months have bothered some people. Now what defines a 'bigger game' is subjective but many associate bigger with AAA(I personally don't).

In my personal opinion, it's hard to complain about free games being offered with my subscriptions to both PSN and Live cause the more the merrier to me at least; however, I can understand how some people want to feel they're getting their money's worth.

Kreisen2701d ago

I think the core of the problem lies in the fact that you need Plus to play online and for many people if there is a game they really like they will just buy it.

ASTAROTH2701d ago (Edited 2701d ago )

I believe you are missing the bigger picture. In the early days PSPlus was a service. Similar to Amazon Prime and others. The most important things were the disccounts and early access to Betas etc. Then the price was justiffied with "free" games and people start to complained because lets be honest not all those games were great. Now the complainers are the same that just bought Call of Duty, GTA or NBA 2k every year and pay to play online. They tend to complain about games they are not even going to buy at a disccount.
The same thing happened to the xbox players who are starting to enjoy games with gold and critizice every month of PSPlus for the lack of good games and gloat about games that we played years ago thanks to PSPlus. But to finish... we the gamers who bougth the games are happy with these kind of stuff that the PSPlus subscription gave us. I am really looking forward more to play Day of the Tentacle and This War of MIne than Killer Instinct for example.
Why? Because Im no cheap gamer and KI was a game that every xbox owner needs in their collection. Why wait for MS ( if they ever ) to give it for free? Be a gamer not a complainer and if you can buy a AAA game just go and do so. Wait for the smaller indies to be released for free with the service or in the case of the supperior PSPLUS service wait for the great discounts that the GOLD seem to miss but nobody talks about that on the gaming websites.
Happy new year and happy gaming!!

Death2701d ago

Superior is probably a relative term. I let my PS+ sub die a couple years ago. I'm not a fan of indie games on console and don't like not having anything but indies in the subscription. When Plus was an option and not mandatory for online play, the games were in my opinion much better and a better value. I'm not sure why people still refer to the games as free, they are what the subscription is for. It's like bragging about all the free movies a Netflix sub offers or all the free music when you subscribe to a music streaming service. For the gamers that don't like/want/appreciate indies, what do they get besides the ability to play online for $60? As for the gamers that say, "I know some people want AAA every month", what are you talking about? Why try to make it sound like AAA comes every month and once a year indies sneak in? It's indie month after month and year after year.

How about a choice instead?

admiralvic2701d ago

"I believe you are missing the bigger picture"

I get the feeling you're the one who is missing the bigger picture.

When Plus released the service was pretty lackluster, but then they created the instant game collection. At this time PlayStation Plus was getting countless big games, in addition to small ones, and people were generally happy. The issue is when PlayStation 4 and the paid online came into play.

Unlike the Vita, where Sony needed to do things to boost the sales and quickly offered Uncharted: Golden Abyss, WipEout 2048 and Gravity Daze, they never needed to do a big marketing push with the PlayStation 4. As a result, the service went from offering notable and exciting games to various small and indie games. This isn't a knock at indie titles, as some of them are quite good, just that we went from several large budget retail games to generally six low budget indie games after that point.

"Why? Because Im no cheap gamer and KI was a game that every xbox owner needs in their collection. Why wait for MS ( if they ever ) to give it for free?"

Another thing is that you don't seem to get the strength of PlayStation Plus' service. I don't make enough to have the ability to run out and buy anything and everything I "should" or people suggest. In the case of things like the Souls series, offering one of them from Plus will give people who might not want to spend $20+ on a game that people call frustrating, but it is enough to get them to try it. Maybe they like it, maybe they don't, but at least people will try it and could potentially become fans.

This is also true for hidden gems like Vanquish, which Plus allowed a number of people who likely wouldn't have experienced it a chance to experience it. But I digress, so much of this is the service offering less value than anything else.

derkasan2700d ago

Even then, it's just an extra $10. A year subscription for PS+ has been $50 on Amazon for the last couple of months, so people can always buy it there.

bluefox7552698d ago

I would have been okay with the price hike if they had bumped the quality of the free games. I know a lot of people are happy with the indies and smaller games, and I am too, it's just that having been a long time PS+ subscriber, and being used to the awesome freebies given out during the PS3 gen, it's hard to not see a downgrade here in the offerings.

Its a matter of opinion, I personally haven't played a ps plus game in ages. More people are angry that ps plus is required to play online, and the selection every month seems to be similar for the games given

TKCMuzzer2700d ago (Edited 2700d ago )

It's about paying to play online. On the other hand people would be more upset if the PSN got hacked again. Thats what the cost is covering, to constantly keep hackers at bay, I doubt it's cheap and thanks to hackers all they have done is make gamers pay more.
In general, game prices have not gone up much in 20 years, the cost of making them has dramatically, the cost of staff goes up etc. At some point companies will always need to make money to cover these costs as they are not adding it to the price of the software (because that would cause an internet breakdown).
It's a balancing act, put the price of games up to cover the cost of production, people will moan, so Sony (and others) have to get back this somewhere else. At the end of the day we have to except we can not have loads of AAA exclusives at £40 ($60), top security to protect our details, servers running 24/7 and not pay anything extra for it. Companies need to make a profit in order to secure investment for the following year, you can't create profit if you give away everything for free, unfortunately that's not how the real world works.

Imalwaysright2700d ago (Edited 2700d ago )

PSN hack? People were upset and rightly so because Sony was NEGLIGENT in protecting PSN

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/...

Also keeping Sony's network safe isn't our responsibility just like keeping your nearest mall safe isn't your responsibility. Why on Earth should I or anyone have to pay for it?

" At some point companies will always need to make money to cover these costs as they are not adding it to the price of the software (because that would cause an internet breakdown)."

When we buy a PS4 game that was developed by Sega/EA/Ubisoft... Sony receives a cut from it and they receive even more if the game is bought from their store because they're the ones distributing it. They make profit each time a 3rd party game is sold. They make money on the things that they are SELLING to us.

"you can't create profit if you give away everything for free, unfortunately that's not how the real world works."

What are they giving away for free?

FallenAngel19842701d ago

It would be if it had Shovel Knight

_-EDMIX-_2701d ago

Lol I'm still waiting for Shovel Knight

Phunkydiabetic12700d ago

Why don't you just go buy it if you want it that bad?

_-EDMIX-_2700d ago

@phunk- to what degree do you know I want Shovel Knight? Lol

Slow down buddy, the gun..... you've jumped it.

DarkZane2701d ago

To the people who want AAA games, if you didn't buy an AAA game yet and you wanted to wait for it on PS Plus, then you clearly didn't want to play it that much anyway.

At least with indies, people get to try something they haven't yet.

DefenderOfDoom22701d ago (Edited 2700d ago )

To back up your comment , most triple A games from 2013, to early 2016 on the PS4, people can buy for 20 dollars or less .

My only complaint is not having enough time to play them all . I guess that is a good complaint to have.

Servbot412701d ago

"To the people who want indie games, if you didn't buy an indie game yet and you wanted to wait for it on PS Plus, then you clearly didn't want to play it that much anyway."

That's how stupid your comment is.

CrimzonRazor2701d ago

the problem isnt the games being indies the problem is most of them are just not good

TKCMuzzer2700d ago

I don't have time to complete all the games I have now let alone what appears on plus.

bluefox7552698d ago (Edited 2698d ago )

Were you a Ps+ subscriber during the PS3 era? If you were, then you should understand our disappointment.

Great news it shows that Nintendo intends to continue developing ports of AAA games to its next gen platform

H92d ago

Buying studios from embracer now is a great deal, they must be dirt cheap at this point, Nintendo is a opportunist, they wait until someone fall so they get their best deal

OtterX1d 21h ago

That is some serious brain gymnastics you have going on there. 🤔

H91d 18h ago

I didn't do any gymnastics I can assure you, honestly I don't know why you think that, not hating I seriously don't see why you think that

ZeekQuattro1d 16h ago

Yeah I don't know where that came from. It's rare for Nintendo to flat out aquire studios. Guess they were trying to be edgy but why flex on this studio. 🤣

Kneetos20h ago

At least they are safer from layoffs with Nintendo then any other company

banger882d ago

I hope someone buys Piranha Bytes, their future isn't looking good right now. I love their RPGs, they're janky as f***, but they have heart and soul.

Nintendo saw the Mortal Kombat 1 Switch port and were like, "Yeah, these guys are worth acquiring."

You can't make this crap up lol

Profchaos1d 22h ago

Mortal Kombat 1 was never going to port well I'm sure they told wb it wasn't going to work but wb wants that sweet sweet 140 million install base

In the end wb approved the project cleared the milestones and allowed the product to release

SonOfOsiris1d 18h ago

Yeah this guys ported MK11 which is great, Hogwarts Legacy which is great, and MK1 is now ok, play it every day
