'Mafia III' Should Have Copied 'The Last Of Us' Instead Of 'GTA V'

Erik really liked Mafia III but there's simply no denying that the game gets repetitive pretty quickly. Unlike Watch Dogs 2 or GTA V, there really wasn't a ton of mission variety and it all falls a bit flat after its terrific opening salvo.

GtR35olution2719d ago (Edited 2719d ago )

So basically mafia 3 should have copied a better game. Mafia 3 is a good game also

Movefasta19932718d ago

They are both great games, gta 5 and ltou, I think he meant it would have been better if it were morelinear experience because the story is there, it's just the side missions that are boring.

rdgneoz32718d ago

Exactly. After a great start to the game, it fell into a boring repetitive circle of the same side missions over and over. No variety like GTA.

WellyUK2718d ago

Mafia 3 would actually be good if it removed 80% of it's missions.

But technically when you're comparing a game to Grand Theft Auto 5 that applies to the majority of open world games made anyway.

If they created the game with open-world in mind in regards to allowing the player to play the game in an open-ended environment that is up to the developer.

Whenever I hear someone say that a game is suitable for more linear experience simply because they only enjoyed a specific portion of a game I never completely understand what they're talking about , simply because you also have the choice to not do the extracurricular activities outside the main game.

I've had this debate with a friend of mine who enjoyed Mass Effect but was overwhelmed by Skyrim and Fallout and my suggestion to them was simply ignore all the side quest and just focus on the main quest.

What I'm suggesting is that they play THEIR WAY, it's their choice if they want to play game mission to Mission and ignore the side activities.

Clearly there are people who love to explore these worlds and love to do some of those activities regardless of how any of us would feel about that Mafia 3 was created open world for a reason the series is open world for a reason.

We honestly cannot keep holding every single last game to the standard of Grand Theft Auto 5 in regards to the number of features it should have in the Overworld as I don't really believe that's a realistic expectation to be holding against every developer.

Give Grand Theft Auto V the credit it deserves by actually respecting that they are one of the few that could afford and are talented enough to even do such a thing inside of their game that really isn't something most developers could seriously do.

there's not a lot that are going to be spending a 120 million dollars on the development of a game.

Christopher2718d ago

Why do people expect every game to be of the best quality? Does every movie you watch live up to the best movies out there? Every book? What happened to enjoying a game and not trying to worry about why it's not the best or as good as <0.00001% of games that break the standards?

_-EDMIX-_2718d ago

Agreed Grand Theft Auto is one of my favorite franchises ever created and I never miss an entry but that doesn't mean I don't play other open world crime games, or even continuously keep comparing them to Grand Theft Auto 5 I believe it's an absolutely absurd and unrealistic expectation to seriously expect every game to meet such standards that's basically like criticizing every single movie director that isn't directed like Martin Scorsese you don't really hold Martin Scorsese to such a high-caliber when you start expecting every human being to be like him, in fact you start disrespecting him when you actually assume that all it takes to beat him is simply knowing his method, I'm sorry but as an artist it's absolutely disrespectful for anyone to seriously believe simply knowing something means they could craft something better , when something like a video game is created it is made as a subjective art form not as some objective concept ie once you know it, you won.

There is a feel to the Grand Theft Auto games there is a specific design to the Grand Theft Auto games there was a specific method to have those games were crafted in created with so much care and love that is not as simple as just imitating and those who keep actually comparing everything to Grand Theft Auto 5 are not doing Rockstar any favors because they're assuming that such a thing is seriously that simple.

If you respect Rockstar and naughty dog stop comparing every game that releases to their works because you're basically saying anyone can be them simply by knowing something.

Do you think I could be Michael Jackson simply because I watch him dance? Does someone think that I could be Beethoven simply because I watch him create music? Is there anyone here that's that naive to seriously believe when somebody crafts an art that it's as simple as just knowing what they do?

I think Gamers need to start really looking at the medium as a true art form and they need to stop making it sound as if it's as simple as knowing something games are crafted art, they are not simply shoved off an assembly line.

iceman062717d ago

Exactly! Videogames seem to be held to an unattainable series of expectations. There seems to be no room for games that are just good or okay. People actually balk at games that score less than an 8. Some of my most fond gaming memories come from those unexpected rough jewels.
Coming from the very start of gaming, EVERYTHING is a step up from PONG! It might not be as fun, but it sure in the hell looks better.

_-EDMIX-_2718d ago

No.

There is no better there is no worse they are simply different and at the end of the day the mafia series is an open-world crime game I see Zero reason for them to mimic something like The Last of Us.

That is not even say Last of Us is a bad game, it is simply saying the comparison doesn't make any sense , you create a game to meet a specific conceptual objective. Not every game can be like the last of us , but not every game should be made like The Last of Us...

Respect how well The Last of Us was crafted but also respect that it was not crafted with this bizarre concept that it was the only way any game should ever be played or created.

SCW19822719d ago

Most games should follow this rule. Open world fatigue is a real problem this gen. All filler and no substance makes me a dull boy.

kraenk122718d ago

The problem isn't the open worlds though, it's the laziness of the developers to write good side stories and quests.

Lynx02072718d ago

Not really. Even when the game has great stories and quests it could be boring if you don't like open worlds. That is te reason I stopped playing Witcher 3.

SarcasticDuck2718d ago

@Lynx0207 So... you don't like open world games so you blame them for not being good? (even when they are but you're just an idiot who don't like to play them).

cartoonx12718d ago

well thn u have a problem in general, open world are great if done right.

SCW19822718d ago (Edited 2718d ago )

I don't have a problem at all. Open World when done right is incredible, but not very many people do it right. Developers that do it right, Rockstar,CD Projekt Red, Bethesda. Developers that do it wrong, Ubisoft and many many others. When done right is the main factor here. More people do it wrong than right. Red Dead Redemption and Witcher 3 are 2 of my favorite games of all time FYI.

Agreed....game was fantastic. Especially as a person of color, I enjoyed the side missions.

Kakashi Hatake680d ago

I'm Black myself, which is different from Lincoln who is bi racial. (It's trendy to ignore that mixed people are half White for some reason) What would color have to do with enjoying a game like this? Imagine if people playing God of War were like "Gee, I'm enjoying playing as a White person right now". If we want others to relate to things other than skin color, we have to start setting an example as "People of Color" (That term is so stupid btw)

InklingGirl680d ago

I wonder if this comment will get removed like mine? It shouldn't but I'm just curious.

LucasRuinedChildhood680d ago (Edited 680d ago )

"What would color have to do with enjoying a game like this?"

Skin colour matters a lot in the story and setting of Mafia 3. It even affects the gameplay.

The comparison to God Of War doesn't make sense.

I'm Irish (as in, a person born in Ireland), and I'd probably enjoy a game where you can fight in the Irish War of Independence ... a bit more than the average Brit. lol. Who cares? If a British person "Imagine if ...", I'd just laugh.

LucasRuinedChildhood680d ago (Edited 680d ago )

*said "Imagine if ..."

Also, it is cool when you play an Irish character in a game who doesn't put on a leprechaun accent like Tom Cruise did. "Shannon! Tell me you like my hat!" https://youtu.be/eKrEVWGTuR...

Terry_B680d ago

nah..its mediocre and repetitive.

Demetrius680d ago (Edited 680d ago )

I played it once and it was very frustrating compared to mafia 2 I like to enjoy games not get raged all up 😂😂

XbladeTeddy680d ago

It was repetitive and boring. Not a good game at all.

Yi-Long680d ago

The game looked interesting, and from the trailers it seemed it had a great soundtrack, but the buggy release (AI) and disappointing reviews made me pass on it. No idea if they ever fixed its shortcomings post-launch.

XbladeTeddy680d ago

They could only polish a turd so much. Wasn't good at release and isn't good now.

MadLad680d ago

Weakest game in the series.

AuraAbjure680d ago

People said that about Wolfenstein:Youngblood. I played youngblood and it is a masterpiece and so awesome and entertaining and badass, with ray tracing too. Is Mafia 3 a great game on its own merit? I understand compared to the other Mafias, you feel it's weak.

MadLad677d ago

I respectfully disagree.

GTA V, Mafia, and Red Dead Redemption 2 VR mods are dead – and Take 2 Interactive killed them

From VG247: "If you’ve been enjoying either Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA V, or Mafia: The Definitive Edition in VR thanks to some handy fan-made mods, we’ve got some bad news. Thanks to a DMCA claim by Take Two Interactive - the parent company of Rockstar Games and 2K - has led development on the most popular VR mods to grind to a halt.

This news comes via Luke Ross - the sole creator of a variety of VR mods for the aforementioned games - who released a lengthy post to his supporters. In it, he claims to have received a DMCA request from Take Two Interactive for his projects and that the company requested that he “remove all their copyrighted works from [his] Patreon page”. This was confirmed by Kotaku who reached out to Patreon directly."

Orbilator683d ago

Get the mods on a torrent site and tell the world were they are.

Duke19683d ago

I mean, if he was modding a game that someone else built, and charging for it on patreon - this seems pretty cut and dry for a DMCA.

If he was not profiting from it in any way though, would be nice to let companies let this shit slide more often
