Crash Bandicoot Producer Says N. Sane Trilogy Looks ‘Same Old’; Franchise Should’ve Moved Forward

The producer of the original Crash Bandicoot has criticised Activision's upcoming remastered trilogy as being a "Frankenstein-ian" project, saying the franchise should have instead looked to "enthral" players with new and innovative ideas.

Sony is trying to see if theyll be enough interest in the n-sane trilogy in order to make a decision on making a new game

PhoenixUp2715d ago

Sony has no control over this franchise, only Activision does

Cdn_Seahawks_Fan2715d ago

But given that is seems (at this point) to he only headed to the PS platform (unless I am missing something) that Sony would have paid for exclusivity for a remake. Makes you wonder why they didn't go for something new.

trouble_bubble2715d ago

Because activision probably didn't want to invest double the money on a AAA platformer with no guarantee. Platformers don't really sell these days and Crash is a dinosaur. Two strikes. They're testing the waters, like with Skylanders. If it sells, they'll greenlight the real deal. If it doesn't, they're not millions in the hole.

It's not about the graphics, I want to play the original Crash. Really what could the do new with a classic beside screw it up?

PhoenixUp2715d ago

@ Cdn

Well of course Sony paid for exclusivity for this game, but they have no creative control over this game or the franchise anymore.

It's obvious why Vicarious Visions opted for these remakes instead of making a new title. We haven't had a new Crash game in 8 years and the last one made the franchise go dormant. Merely releasing another title near the franchise's 20th anniversary wouldn't have gotten people's approval, so of course they would play the nostalgia card. Not only does this give the the goodwill of gamers, but working on this game can give the devs even more experience on how to make a possible future Crash game. This could be similar to how Sanzaru worked on the Sly HD Collection, then used their experience to work on Sly 4.

bouzebbal2714d ago

i'm glad we are getting this because the PS2 episodes weren't close to be as fun.
I cannot wait to go back in memory

IamTylerDurden12714d ago

The N. Sane Trilogy is a mix between a remaster and a remake. The original assets were unusable, they had to create this from the ground up while strictly adhering to the gameplay and level design of the originals. It's somewhat similar to the R&C reboot.

WEll, two things.

1. I think most people don't want something new like the last few crash bandicoot games, which were mediocre at best.
2. It is a remaster, so of course it is not some brand new formula... I am sure if they release a true sequel it will have new things additional.

achmetha2714d ago

What they're making is exactly what I was hoping for. I'm glad they're doing it this way.

Jamaicangmr2715d ago

Sony is just working with Activision to give us one of the most requested remasters in Playstation history. They don't own crash.

Yeah, I think people are iffy after the Crash games during the PS2 days, that were bland. TBH, I don't think there is wrong with an HD remake as long as it deserves it, like Crash does. That way you can pander to old players and bring new players into the series too. I hope it does well. I know when I get the money i'm going to pre-order it.

IamTylerDurden12714d ago

But if there is enough interest garnered by the N. Sane Trilogy you can expect that a brand new game has a great chance of coming. Plus, it familiarizes more ppl with crash and sets the stage for a new entry. It's actually a smart strategy.

So, support the Trilogy bc it very well could lead to a new game. Same thing with Wipeout.

If it sells well then I'm sure we will get a brand new game. They are playing it safe for now.

The 10th Rider2715d ago

I definitely think that's the case, but I can see where the original producer is going. I'm a bit worried the remasters won't sit well with newer gamers who aren't used to the classic gameplay. It's very much a remaster 'for the fans'. That's great and all, but that likely won't lead to blockbuster success and could hurt the chance of a new entry in the series.

PhoenixUp2715d ago

Just think of it like the Sly Collection. The devs could use their experience working on these games to make a new installment in the series

IamTylerDurden12714d ago

Sanzaru nailed it in both the Sly Collection (particularly on Vita) and Thieves in Time. Both were spectacular on Vita. This could be the formula with Crash. To familiarize the dev and the audience with Crash via the remasters, then use that experience and publicity to make and sell a new game.

Pancit_Canton2715d ago

Hopefully they will do the same treatment for Spyro.

LemyAtom2714d ago

Definitely. I'm hoping for this too. People said we'd never see a crash remaster so we can dream for Spyro.

343_Guilty_Spark2715d ago

Can we have Crash Team Racing tho?!

Lou Ferrigno2715d ago

man that would be the shit right there.. CTR was my jam back then.
and HD remake with PS4 pro support is a wish of mine.

-Foxtrot2714d ago

That will be next...and hopefully remastered with Crash Bash

Oh and online support

PurpHerbison2714d ago

Only if they bother to add online support.
