PSVR Will Sell Under 750K Units This Year, Down from Initial 2.6M Projection, According to Forecast

Market research and analytics firm SuperData Research has issued a revised 2016 sales forecast for the PSVR, estimating that Sony's virtual reality headset will shift fewer than 750,000 units by the end of the year – well short of its recent prediction of 2.6 million.

That's a more realistic expectation. We don't have so many killer apps for VR that would make it just burst off the shelves this holiday season

UCForce2706d ago (Edited 2706d ago )

I agree on that one. Especially VR is a new tech, so it would take long time for VR to become mainstream. 750.000 PSVR units is a good start, slight better than Vive and Rift. Still, we have a long way to go.

Here the links : https://www.google.com.vn/a...

Movefasta19932706d ago

there are no killers apps, resident evil will be the first good reason to get one.

Eonjay2706d ago

Resident Evil is gonna kill people. Can't wait to see the lets plays!

kraenk122706d ago

I don't know how it is in the states but over here in Europe as in Japan the thing is sold out everywhere. If anything holds up its sales it's Sony's struggle to keep up with demand.

vigilante_man2706d ago

You don't need killer apps. There are more than enough demos to get a feel for it and experience VR. It will only get better.

Bought mine last week and so many friends who do not even game want to come over and try it out. VR is here to stay and is the next big thing along with 4K HDR. Especially in the UK.

Death2705d ago

PSVR is the opposite of 4k/HDR. The image quality while using PSVR is a pretty big leap backwards as far as visual fidelity goes. You don't get the screen door effect but you do get some pretty blocky pixels. Texture detail is much lower too to meet the demands VR places on the GPU/CPU. 4K and HDR are doing the opposite, they are taking high def gaming to the next level. At $399 each, most gamers will have to choose between the two and that doesn't include a relatively expensive 4K/HDR or the camera and remotes on the VR side if you go the other direction.

I do agree the wow factor for PSVR is huge when you get it. The problem with it is the same as Rift and Vive, there isn't much worth doing with it after a week or two.

Ah another sony employee I see.

I don't know if 750k is a good amount or a bad one. Regardless it appears that they overestimated the amount by a ton. Usually these research firms are not off by that much so im wondering if they made a mistake when they made their estimates.

Anyways I hope VR as a whole succeeds.

Thatguy-3102706d ago

More than the competition and that's with them struggling with meeting demand.

jaymacx2706d ago

Its not bad considering the cost and the available games. I'm holding off for awhile. Maybe if I was Sony only but I'm not ... saving up for Switch and Scorpio launches

Yohshida2706d ago

Look at it like this: is it worth for a dev to make a vr game and reach 800k or better to make a ps4 game and reach 50 Million?

This leads into fewer games which gives people even fewer reasons to Buy one = Dead . Most devs dont even make games for vita and it sold way more.

MasterCornholio2706d ago

This isn't a confirmation that PSVR is dead though. What we have to look at is how it sells after launch.

jukins2706d ago

It's always worth a developer working on a new platform even with a low install base. Just think if every dev had that kind of thinking we would never get any games for new hardware because of the initial low install base.

trooper_2706d ago

You only want it to be dead.

Angeljuice2706d ago

A developer producing a "must have" PSVR franchise could set themselves up for 20 years of being the top developer for the tech.

A medium sized developer will see this as an opportunity to forge their name as the new big hitter on the VR scene, potentially for decades to come.

Death2705d ago

We will see many small games by indie devs that have low risk and the potential for high rewards. Time hasn't been kind with Rift or Vive since launch early this year. I'm not sure why, but the games haven't really followed. I think the restrictions of VR are holding it back. When you add the high entry cost it's not an ideal combination.

CorndogBurglar2706d ago

They weren't taking stock into consideration. Sony didn't project anywhere near that. They expected to sell "hundreds of thousands". Likely because they knew how many units they were pushing out.

MasterCornholio2706d ago

If Sony projected hundreds of thousands then I guess the prediction is in line with what Sony is expecting.

CorndogBurglar2706d ago (Edited 2706d ago )

Well sure. The console is sold out in many areas. Why would Sony project to sell 2.6 million when they didn't even manufacture enough consoles to pull those numbers?

"Sony is expecting its PlayStation VR (virtual reality) headset to sell "hundreds of thousands" of units AFTER its launch Thursday and the company is ramping up production capacity to deal with the expected demand, the European president of the electronic giant's gaming division told CNBC."

MasterCornholio2705d ago

"Why would Sony project to sell 2.6 million when they didn't even manufacture enough consoles to pull those numbers?"

What's funny is that it wasn't Sony who predicted that number.

"SuperData Research has issued a revised 2016 sales forecast for the PSVR, estimating that Sony's virtual reality headset will shift fewer than 750,000 units by the end of the year – well short of its recent prediction of 2.6 million."

It was Super Data that did.

LOL

Right there in the article yet some people are accusing Sony for predicting that number.

madmonkey012706d ago

in the UK it is pretty much out of stock perpetually since launch,

Nicaragua2706d ago

Same in Europe, in fact most places have back order lists so it seems to me that they are selling every unit they make.

With that in mind its more of a case that they cannot produce 2.6 million units rather than cannot sell 2.6 million units.

kraenk122706d ago

Not sure why people disagree (actually I know why)..it's the same situation in Germany, Japan and the rest of Europe.

maybelovehate2706d ago

lelo2play2705d ago (Edited 2705d ago )

@big_dom_strikes_back

No, they are the actual device for sale in the box's. I know a few gamers with PS4's and PC's, and none of them have a VR device. I guess VR is not that big over here.

OB1Biker2706d ago

Its sold out indeed I wish I could get one. Funny all your disagrees and all the trolls pissing on the PSVR here while in other post they completely ignore it and pretend there s nothing Playstation releasing in the holiday.

Bluemaster772706d ago

I live in Chicago you can pretty much find them anywhere here

Immorals2706d ago

I've never had an issue finding stock in Southampton, the only issue was finding a demo where they don't charge..

Here's the thing, you have the PS4 pro at 400 dollars, then you have the PSVR at 500 dollars, which includes the camera and I am sure most would want that since the camera wasn't bundled in the original PS4 to cut the cost at launch.

Not mention the Move controllers and you have a package that is way more expensive then the much more attactive Pro system.

Also add that there isn't any killer must have games for the PSVR. No Uncharted, no Killzone, no God of War. Just a lot of what it looks like tech demos that you should only play 15 to 20 minutes at a time.

So in a sense Sony did fragment their user base and now even more.

UCForce2706d ago (Edited 2706d ago )

PSVR is 399$. Not 499$. Way back then, I disagreed about 2.6 million units from Database. That's not gonna happen. Even I remember Sony expected PSVR would sell about a hundred thousand units, not a million units.

http://www.roadtovr.com/son...

“We know from the data we have from pre-orders that the interest we have is significant,” Ryan said during a TV interview, further saying that PlayStation VR sales will be in the “many hundreds of thousands” as the headset rolls out. “We think to be able to offer PlayStation VR… [at $399 dollars] it’s extremely affordable and we think the takeup is going to be massive,” he said.

Number_92706d ago (Edited 2706d ago )

According to the link you provided: "SCEE president Jim Ryan said interest in the headset is “significant” and going by pre-order data, sales at LAUNCH could be “MANY hundredS of thousands”.

So sales at LAUNCH not the year we're expected to be in the multiple hundreds of thousands not the 100 thousand you keep going on about.

@Number_9

That link also details the only statement someone affiliated with Sony made about sales predictions. Not once has Sony stated the PSVR would ship millions.

People who thought this thing was going to sell millions in that timeframe are as delusional as the people who say the PSVR isn't a succes.

Btw, if you really want to quote articles, put something between the quotes that was actually written in the article.

"SCEE president Jim Ryan said interest in the headset is “significant” and going by pre-order data, sales at LAUNCH could be “MANY hundredS of thousands"

This sentence isn't even found in the article I linked. So put LAUNCH in capitals as much as you want, that's not what was written.
I'll give you an example on how to quote using the source article for the link I provided:

"Sony is expecting its PlayStation VR (virtual reality) headset to sell "hundreds of thousands" of units AFTER its launch Thursday and the company is ramping up production capacity to deal with the expected demand, the European president of the electronic giant's gaming division told CNBC."

Number_92705d ago

Barricade, you are embarrassing yourself. That quote is from the link UCForce directed at me. I was replying to HIM, not you. I didn't even bother reading your comment or link because my conversation was with UCForce. Why you decided to insert yourself as the OP is beyond me.

Number_92705d ago (Edited 2705d ago )

Just by the way Barricade, if you had bothered to go straight to the source of YOUR link you might have seen this:

"We know from the data we have from pre-orders that the interest we have is significant," Ryan said in a TV interview, adding that AT LAUNCH, sales will be in the "many hundreds of thousands".

That is a direct quote from the original interview/article that YOUR link is sourced from. http://www.cnbc.com/2016/10...
Now tell me again how I misquoted... Good day sir.

Team_Litt2705d ago

Aenea2706d ago (Edited 2706d ago )

Nah, I only had to spend €399 on PSVR since I already had the camera and Move controllers. The Pro only cost me €199 because I traded in my old PS4...

Also this 2.6 million wasn't an estimate made by Sony, was done by this data firm (in March!) that now has changed their own estimate. Nothing to do with what Sony expected it to sell. Heck considering it's sold out in many, many places I think it's selling way better than Sony expected....

Things aren't as bad as some people (want to) think it is.

MasterCornholio2706d ago

I guess what this is saying is that if there wasn't any supply constraints Sony would be able to sell over 2 million PSVR headsets. That's what this is telling me.

If true then Sony really needs to step up production.

SpaceRanger2705d ago

This is in reply to your recent comment in the above thread (under my comment).

@DealwithIt

If you're that annoyed about "excuses" and so interested in PSVR sales (why else would you be in this thread) then you should also put your trolling efforts towards MS' low yearly sales excuses chalkboard...

http://s4.postimg.org/91ckr...

It's out of date because there was no room left.

xDealtwithIt2705d ago

You know how I can tell when I'm right, it's when I get replies back that automatically start talking about MS and Xbox sales.

It's the go to salt on the shelf. And I'm not annoyed, I think it's hilarious to see you guys scramble your defense.

And I'm not concerned about Xbox sales because, "MS didn't supply enough Xbox One S", "They were all sold out", "the demand was too much for retailers", I'm sure there's more i can nab from this very thread for future use.

You may have a chalkboard but you sony fans have the Torah of excuses to let Sony off the hook.

Automatic792705d ago

@DealtwithIt

You are right on every point you make. The fact that sony has three products out at same time ranging from 300 to 499 and one of them you have to spend another $400 to five hundred to enjoy VR, is not a good move. It's not worth reasoning with some of the Fan boys on this site, even if the evidence is in there face, they will sit there and damage control, cherry pic points for the sake of not accepting the product is niche and not as mainstream as expected.

Heck they even make excuses as to why PS4 has not had a decent exclusive to play since Uncharted 4. I am sure you heard it, we get games all year, we dont need games during holidays, we have VR with plenty of games. Meanwhile how do you get games all year when you have not had a decent game since Uncharted 4(6 mos) and your best hope for a game is a game in 10 year development, non hyped game, boy with dragon, or a tech demos that last twenty minutes to an hour. Some of the fanboys have lost there minds.

If Xbox takes two months off with no games they automatically pull out the pitchforks and knives.

Don't waste your breath we are going to hear excuses for years.
