Final fantasy vii also had a marketing budget of 100 million, completely unheard of at the time. Sony knew people would love final fantasy, they just had to convince them to give it a try. Imagine if nintendo invested 100 million marketing final fantasy 6?

What makes you so sure that if SE had waste 100 million for marketing on FFVI would make people love it as much as FFVII? do you seriously believe that FFVI has what it takes for a world wide success & the necessary attributes to make over 10 millions people love it as much as FFVII? be sure that even if they had spent as much money with VII back when VI released it wouldn't sell even half of what VII sold, the reason? simply put VI lack the production values VII had, when FFVII released there was nothing like it, the FMV & cut scenes was for the time out of this world, the pre-rendered backgrounds was amazingly beautiful & well made, the various summons that was shown in various trailers was mind-blowing, the whole game was an eye-candy begged to be played, it was that much attractive even to someone who never played a JRPG before, but it was the story, the characters, the combat/materia system & the soundtrack that most of all make the millions of fans around the world to fall in love with this game so much, everything else was just an 'addition' a bonus if you want, so I think it would be better to not make assumptions that VI would have the same fate with VII if Square had spent more money advertising back when it released, because you can't know that & imo it wouldn't make a difference at least not as much as in VII's case.

But none of these are Squares highest grossing FF, that would be FFXI. The greatest MMO of all time.
