The most disappointing video games of 2016

Life is full of disappointments. So is gaming. For every peak, there's a valley.

I disagree with Titanfall 2 being on the list. Having a release date sandwiched between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was the major factor in the game being largely ignored by the FPS crowd.
Homefront: The Revolution, Mighty Number 9, and Mirror's Edge: Catalyst - These were low expectation titles to begin with.
No Man's Sky, Quantum Break, The Division, and Street Fighter 5 - Too much hype (sometimes to insane levels) and upon release were shown to be either unfinished, rushed, downgraded, just average, or a combination of those factors.

DaGR8JIBRALTAR2712d ago

Titanfall 2 is great, the author is an smuck.

thorstein2712d ago (Edited 2712d ago )

No Man's Sky was enjoyable ( a solid 6-8 rating ), the Division was a blast, and I never got Street Fighter 5 or QB, but I don't own an XOne so I never got to play it. I want TitanFall 2 and will get it in the next month. You are right, author schmuck is looking for clicks.

bouzebbal2712d ago

This article is broken to the spine.

"The biggest problem is the time during which EA saw fit to release the game. Battlefield 1 hit a week before, and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered hit just a week after. Three weeks of military shooters that owe lineage, in some way or another, to Vince Zampella and Medal of Honor."

Explain how can a bad publisher decision lead to the fact that the game is disappointing? What's wrong with you people?

morganfell2711d ago

TF2 is fantastic. Mirrors Edge could learn from TF2 regarding ease of movement.

starchild2711d ago

Well, it's all subjective. This list would look different for each of us, so it's ultimately kind of pointless. I personally thought Quantum Break was great and so did a lot of other reviewers.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 2711d ago
TWB2712d ago

Mighty number 9 did have a quite large following and decent expectations due to its Kickstarter backing, so I wouldnt say it was a low expectation title.

Cartman551252711d ago

Titanfall 2 was everything I wanted/expected it to be and more.

Gaming4Life19812711d ago

Yea titanfall 2 is an amazing game, sales might be dissappointing to ea but the game is great.

kevnb2712d ago (Edited 2712d ago )

I don't think titanfall 2 is doing that badly considering its still building a fan base, call of duty didnt always sell 10 million plus copies. Oh, its also a good game.

2712d ago
RememberThe3572711d ago

I picked up Titanfall 2 with the PS Store sale and beat it this weekend. It was an f'n blast. One of the best shooter campaigns I've played. And the online is super solid.

I'll admit I thought the whole premise was kinda stupid with the whole "guy and his robot" thing, but the positive reviews and my frustration with BF1s little glitches drove me to give it a shot and find what might be my favorite shooter this gen.

smichaeln2711d ago

Titanfall 2 campaign was incredible. Haven't had a good FPS campaign like this since Wolfenstien.

milliniumstylz2712d ago

Enjoyed QB but this is one guys opinion..'

Gazondaily2712d ago

Thought it was really disappointing. I expected better from Remedy

RememberThe3572711d ago

The show they tried to peddle between chapters was awful. I don't think I got past the 3rd. The gun play was nice though.

starchild2711d ago

I don't agree. I liked it as much as Alan Wake. Actually the gameplay was even better than Alan Wake and the storytelling was just as good. In my opinion, of course.

I don't mind other people having different opinions than me. It's when people act like their opinion is a fact that it bothers me. (You're not doing that). I don't like how some are trying to act like it's this unqualified bad game, when the positive reviews outnumbered the negative reviews. It's not that everyone has to agree with the positive reviews either, it's just that people need to stop pushing this narrative that it was some kind of universally disappointing game. Many people liked it.

maybelovehate2711d ago

It had its moments. Some awesome concepts but the package as a whole was disappointing.

galmi2711d ago

enjoyed it too man, wasnt close to as bad as people said it was, a 7.5/10 for me

lastking952711d ago

Same, gameplay wise it lived up to the hype but it lacked content (needed another game mode) and show took you out the moment shouldve been a separate package.

Sparta072711d ago (Edited 2711d ago )

Lmao!! QB has the worst Gameplay .
What are you even talking about?
Lack of content wasn't QB problem. 😂
Didn't matter if they added content a bad game is a bad game period. ....

@lastking, how about everything about the game play. Hell you can crouch behind cover go for a sandwich, go shower, take a nap, go on vacation then come back and your still alive. Holy hell
Let's not even mention the ai

Omnislashver362712d ago (Edited 2712d ago )

Just bought a PS4-Pro and I agree. UC's got the 'perfect' lead role, perfectly bland and boring. Humor is about on par with a bad dad joke, and action is generic Hollywood action with some island/pirate themed vistas, like half of generic action movies. *yawn* I don't even understand how this could be considered a game. It's generic trash. So glad the series is over with. TLOU2 however I'll be looking at.

Aloy-Boyfriend2712d ago (Edited 2712d ago )

Your consideration of the game is just as bad as your opinion

Edit: yeah! That is what I meant pal!

Omnislashver362712d ago

That's where you're wrong. I never considered this a game. I considered it a bad knockoff of bad Hollywood movies.

2712d ago
100_SavAGe2712d ago

Well your opinion is trash and many disagree with you

nix2712d ago

Omni,

Ppl voted for Trump. views vary. some are worthy. some not. sad part is that some people does not know good from bad.

andrewsquall2712d ago

@OmnislashVer36 Ah yes that is why it was given universally praiseworthy reviews, because everyone was disappointed by it. You wish, sound like somebody who just hates Uncharted and never played U4.

And you'll be "looking" at TLOU2 lol? What, on Youtube? What an insightful opinion of games/lets plays you have.

You know just because you are watching somebody on Youtube playing these games doesn't mean its a movie right? Its literally 10 hours of live action cutscenes that makes a disappointing game, one of these games of which is deservedly on this list. And even then those live action scenes turned it more into a boring mediocre C grade TV Show, not even a movie.

Deadpooled2712d ago

Are you competing for the 'Most Ridiculous Comment on N4G' award for November 2016?

kraenk122712d ago

Not sure anyone here believes you.

Omnislashver362711d ago (Edited 2711d ago )

I could care less about how well it sold. Millions of people make stupid decisions everyday. Wii outsold Xbox and PS3, Trump got elected President, people see shitty movies and think they're deep. Nobody here has even tried combating me on the points I've made: the game emulates terrible Hollywood generic action movies to a startling degree. Go watch Sahara with Mathew McConohay. Same shitty plot/action of Uncharted in a shitty movie.

@AndrewSquall
Gaming websites? You understand they're giving UC high praise because the mass market is currently on PS4. If they give it a shitty review their site will never get clicks. This has created an echo-chamber of stupidity. As someone who's just bought a PS4-Pro and TLOU:Remastered I can still say that. Sorry I'm not a sheep, and sorry you weren't able to combat any point I've made, and you won't: It emulates shitty modern pirate/treasure hunter Hollywood movies. How are you going to combat that: Every aspect of the game is a 1:1 recreation, there's nothing special about this game. As for your 10 hours of cutscenes comment, look at UC for that. It's all style no substance. Thanks for proving my point.

And 'Looking at' means buying if it comes out. Sorry you've gotta be so pessimistic about me buying a possible TLOU2 release.

kevnb2712d ago

this wont go over well here.

Aloy-Boyfriend2712d ago

But U4 was not disappointing. It succeeded and met expectation unlike the ones on the list

thatguyhayat2712d ago

Also game of the year title. Only gaming franchise I know that every title was nominated game of the year

ThePope2712d ago

@thatguy

Mass effect series
Metroid prime series
Anything with Mario in the title

LandCruiser2712d ago

Shame not even a single xbone exclusive in that list. Must be hurting eh pope? Lmao

BossBattle2712d ago

Uncharted 4 started slow with a lot of dialect. But around the mid point until the end is was amazing. I still think the series has lots of life left to it.

ShadowKnight2712d ago (Edited 2712d ago )

Gears of War 4 campaign should be on there too. What a cheesy story lmao but the graphics was great on PC. Microsoft don't care about campaigns anymore. Even Halo 5 campaign was awful.

Omnislashver362712d ago (Edited 2712d ago )

True that. Gears has fallen from the grace of last-gen. It's pretty much owed to the terrible new character design(aside from Kate) and cartoonish voice acting. How they thought this cast could match up to Gears 1-3 is ridiculous. Hell, even spikey-haired JRPG characters would have been better for this game.

Saranya2712d ago

Uncharted 4 should be on there too.

LandCruiser2712d ago

Gears 4 is overrated piece of hot dogshit.

TheOptimist2712d ago

The dialogues are like the early cartoons of 1990s, I mean even Ed. Edd, Eddy made more sense than Gears of War 4 -_-. The graphics are superficially good, but overall I still it's a pretty meh game, how it got 85 on Meta is beyond me.

kraenk122712d ago

Tbh honest I found the dude-bro characters of Gears always kinda gringe worthy.

ThePope2712d ago (Edited 2712d ago )

Completely agree with you UC4 is to date my biggest disappointment this gen. It's not a bad game. In fact it's quite good. It's as good as UC1. But that's the problem, its basically UC1 with better graphics 10 years later.

LandCruiser2712d ago

And gears 4 is gears 1 with better graphics 10 years later. Just with added bonus of more pathetic microtransactions.

kraenk122712d ago

You clearly haven't played it. Btw we all know you don't own a PS4.

ThePope2711d ago (Edited 2711d ago )

@Landcruiser

I plan to start it tonight and if it is that I would say the same thing. See what you did there is called deflection, because you know I'm right and have nothing to combat it. Its like saying "yeah, well, you're a dummy head!"

@Kraenk

I've had every PS console and Xbox console. Not a Nintendo fan. See unlike you I'm a gamer first and don't care if a game comes out on my console of choice or not. If its not all I think it should be I'll call it out. Just like I did with Halo 5. I think UC4 is the most disappointing game this gen. For such a talented team like ND to make such a bland and safe game is really too bad.

Also Kraenk just like Landcrusier telling me "You clearly haven't played it" doesnt actually prove your point it just deflects it away from the game on to me. Nice try though!

@below

dumahim2711d ago

Don't fix what isn't broken.

Germany72711d ago

Said the Xbot, your opinion is irrelevant.
Go talk about Gears 4.
Oh wait, it's not an exclusive.

ThePope2711d ago

@Ratchet

A. I play games not systems
B. Put it in your PS4 and see what happens
C. You like your compatriots sound like children and combined have not mounted any kind of defense as why I am wrong. Leading me to believe you agree.

Sparta072711d ago (Edited 2711d ago )

Omg, pope please just stop.
" UC4 is to date my biggest disappointment this gen. "
Really? Yet you defend QB like if your life depended on it.
Give me a break.

ThePope2711d ago

@Sparta

Oh sparta jeepers creepers just stop!

It wasn't a known quantity. Also, dont exaggerate

Germany72711d ago

Uncharted 4 has great sales, great scores and the majority of fans love the game, you know, people that actually played it.

You are the same guy who said that Gears 4 is the best game of the year, nobody should waste their time discussing with you.

ThePope2711d ago

Rimeskeem2712d ago

Ah yes, a 93 on meta critic with numerous game of the year award nominations. How dissappointing.

moegooner882712d ago

Can't reach the success heights that Uncharted did without making a few haters. Game was a hit with the fans and that' all that matters.

TheOptimist2712d ago (Edited 2711d ago )

Agreed, it's just another mass murder simulator with great graphics. Boring gameplay, illogical storyline, great graphics due to it's linearity. Pretty much meh, just like Gears of War 4(But GOW4 disappointed me more, cuz it's grindy af, enemies are bullet sponges -_-)
@kraenk12
Sam was introduced randomly and if according to the flashbacks he learnt rope swinging/grappling when he was so young, then why were they not used as mechanics in the previous games?

kraenk122712d ago

Illogical storyline?! Please elaborate. There was nothing illogical about it.

trooper_2711d ago

That sounds like an old man argument of someone who didn't play it.

Stop trolling.

galmi2711d ago

found it boring too, but I know thats a sin on this site

trooper_2711d ago

The numerous awards it got disagrees with you.

starchild2711d ago

I don't personally agree with them, but do you really always love every highly rated movie for example? There have been lots of movies that won Academy Awards and got good reviews that I thought were pretty boring. Or movies that were ignored that I thought were great. Same goes for games. I'm pretty tired of hearing about sales or reviews and people holding them up as the gospel truth. It's all quite subjective.

Sparta072711d ago

@starchild, up above your defending QB cause someone didn't like it and now your defending someone not liking UC 😂 Hypocrisy at its best!!!!!

starchild2711d ago

@Sparta07

I'm defending people's right to have their own opinions. It's logically consistent. The fact you think there is any hypocrisy there just shows how irrational you are.

I don't care if people do or don't like Quantum Break, I simply dislike when people try to make it sound like their negative opinion is the only valid one. Likewise, I don't care whether people do or don't like Uncharted 4, they simply shouldn't state either opinion as if it were a fact. Opinions about games are subjective, that's the point.

MagicBeanz2711d ago

Not that you've ever played it or know anything about it but your comment was based on salt anyway so....

Germany72711d ago

Another Xbot pretending to have a PS4, that's really sad.
That's what happens when you don't have any exclusive.

Deep-throat2711d ago

Everyone that didn't like Uncharted 4 or thought it was disappointing is an Xbot?

Silly fanboys.

Germany72711d ago (Edited 2711d ago )

Reading your comments, you are an irrelevant clown that doesn't own a PS4.
It shows that you are a pc beggar that is always begging for Sony exclusives.
Why are you using a Solid Snake's avatar btw?

Deep-throat2711d ago

Butthurt.

I never begged for Sony's games, I only ask for multiplats.

Newsflash: Metal Gear series started on PC. Maybe you're too young to know that.

Germany72711d ago

But the series is huge thanks to Playstation.

Keep begging for exclusives, pc beggar.

If you're wanting more PSVR 2 support, you should probably buy all of these games.

Speak with your wallet!

Profchaos46d ago

Bit rich to have to buy games you don't want because you want Sony to support the expensive headset they sold us which cost as much as the console it runs on beyond paying third partys to support it.
Seriously in terms of first party we have horizon on day 1 and a gt 7 vr mode.

They seemingly have made little effort to support it beyond paying Capcom to make re games in VR or a second party studio to make firewall which was mismanaged.

I'm a day 1 psvr2 user and the only thing I'm excited for right now is PC support.

I commented recently this bespoke VR game development model we have right now clearly doesn't work

crazyCoconuts46d ago

On the one hand I feel like there's been plenty of smaller non-AAA games to play and occupy me as a supplement to my flat screen gaming.
But I agree that Sony has done nothing to elevate this beyond the niche it's in and into the mainstream where it would be economical to create AAA games for it.

Babadook745d ago (Edited 45d ago )

Most of these games are worth owning for most people; I own all but 2 of them in fact. So I agree with kevco33. I think you're crazy if you downplay this list quite frankly. Sony can't keep funding software if people don't buy any of it, the ball is squarely in OUR court.

Sony has spent a lot on 3rd party stuff this gen like RE.

phoenixwing46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

Saving up for the headset is my first hurdle. Let alone buying games I don't want lol

mudakoshaka45d ago

People downvoting you for not having enough finances...what a world we live in, haha

phoenixwing45d ago (Edited 45d ago )

@mudako
They feel affronted at the very thought that I don't plunk down 500 immediately lol I have a little over 900 games in my backlog I've been buying games instead of hardware ever since I got my PC and ps5. I just don't know if vr is really for me honestly. Every time I have a couple hundred allocated to video games it makes more sense to buy a bunch of flat games instead of vr ones

mudakoshaka45d ago

I have 9 out of these 10 games. I try to buy all the VR games I like to support the advancement of VR!

TheEroica45d ago (Edited 45d ago )

I spoke with my wallet after watching the first headset get weak support. Easy pass until Sony earns my money. Feel bad for those who parted with 500 bucks, falling for the hype that Sony was actually gonna support this thing.

Neonridr46d ago

I own 7 of these titles off the list, lol.

NotoriousWhiz46d ago

I'm trying to decide if it's worth holding onto my psvr 2. I enjoy what it has currently, but it seems unlikely to get anything else. Might be better off just waiting for something with more support if that ever comes.

Profchaos45d ago

As a fellow psvr2 owner the question seemingly comes down to do you own a PC.

I think I'm all in I have a habit to hold onto my systems anyhow I still have my psvr1 to hell I still have my NES.

But while it's still worth something yeah you could sell it and if Sony turns the ship around you should be able to buy another one for less than you soldmit for I feel like we won't see any fix for the headset for the next 2 years rumours show that Sony has no current first party VR games in active development after they closed London studios

The whole psvr2 situation has left me feeling a little burnt on PlayStation as a whole to be honest. The first psvr felt experimental but it was supported far more than this superior headset

MIDGETonSTILTS1746d ago
