The very first Tomb Raider was originally released in 1996 for Sega Saturn, PlayStation and MS-DOS

Its a real shame as Crystal Dynamics have done an excellent job with Rise and the 2013 reboot.

Lon3wolf2731d ago

It is and they have but maybe that will free them up for something Kain/Raziel related (one can only hope)

Articuno762731d ago

And the other three games they did before that...

ninsigma2731d ago

CD have done a good job imo. Gameplay wise it's really good. Just get better writers so it can actually have a good story and decent characters next time and it would be top notch.

brettnll2731d ago

Yeah I agree, story should be more of a focus

ninsigma2731d ago

It's just such a shame because it's a really fun game to play but I really don't like Lara and the overall story has been weak. Looks like it'll build nicely from what happened at the end of rise so hopefully they'll get some new writing talent in to strengthen that area.

Articuno762731d ago

It's a shame then that it looks like Eidos Montreal will be handling the next one as they too have strong game design, but weak writing. I'd imagine the next TR will be good, but it will likely be good in all the same ways and bad in all the same ways.

ninsigma2731d ago

Haven't really experienced their games so I wouldn't know what to expect from them myself.

ClayRules20122731d ago (Edited 2731d ago )

I'd be happy with TR being passed on to Naughty Dog.

I want to see Lara's friends/side characters have a real depth to them, and actual character development. Lara'/ been a believable character ever since the reboot "in my opinion" but there's definitely room for improvement.
I'd also like to see some actual hand to hand combat for Lara, similar to Nathan Drake.

Articuno762731d ago (Edited 2731d ago )

TBH I don't find the reboot Lara a convincing character at all for the most part, especially compared to the Lara in the CD trilogy that proceeded those games. Sure, the new Lara is less of a super-hero, but she ultimately does all the same things the old one does, albeit with some more cuts and bruises to show for it (and that fact that she succeeds nonetheless is all the less believable for it).

I'm not sure if it is the writing or the voice acting but she is horribly unconvincing as a character. Every time she pulls out some archaeological tidbit or scans over a foreign language there's a part of me that rolls my eyes and thinks 'yeah right'.

Things changed a bit with the Blood Ties DLC that depicted a more human (and convincing) reboot Lara than we've seen thus far, but she's still a long way from the one voiced by Keeley Hawes that had touches of characterisation interspersed into her dialogue and embellished throughout her various contacts.

Being a convincing, believable character has less to do with the difficulty with which we face challenges, and more to do with a million other tiny things. After all, we can still get engrossed in comic book characters despite their super-human abilities.

Anyway, TL;DR: play Tomb Raider: Legend and pay very close attention to everything Lara says, and how she says it.

ClayRules20122731d ago

I'm sorry to hear you don't find the reboot Lara convincing. I personally never found the previous versions of Lara to be believable. I liked her, but she lacked the humaneness that I get and enjoy with this newer Lara.

I do understand your point on " Sure, the new Lara is less of a super-hero, but she ultimately does all the same things the old one does, albeit with some more cuts and bruises to show for it ( and that fact that she succeeds nonetheless is all the less believable for it).

I'll take your advice and play TR Legend, and see if I agree with ya, buddy.

Chexs19902731d ago

She's John Mcclane bro. She wouldn't get anything done without those cuts and bruises ^^

ninsigma2731d ago

I'm in agreement with articuno myself. Just not convincing. I think she's terribly acted and feel like there just isn't any depth to her. To me she's like a paint by numbers adventure character. Agreed that naughty dog would do a great job though.

ClayRules20122731d ago

I respect your opinion. Its all good, bud =)

ninsigma2731d ago

Yep, I've no issues with you disagreeing xD
In fact, I'm jealous, it means you get to enjoy more than I do xD

ClayRules20122731d ago

Don't be jealous. Ugh, now I feel bad, lol.
Knowing you're not enjoying it to the same extent that I am honestly makes me sad =(

If TR does get passed on to a different studio or the current studio gets better writers or a possible new actor to play Lara, I hope you'll really enjoy it =).

ninsigma2731d ago

Haha don't feel bad, I do still enjoy the games a lot despite my gripes :)

ClayRules20122731d ago

Haha, good! I'm glad to hear it =)

The Best Tomb Raider Games Ranked

We've gone on many adventures with Lara Croft. With another reboot in the making, Wealth of Geeks felt it was a good time to go down the nostalgia rabbit hole and remember the best of those tomb-raiding thrills.

I do agree that Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was the worse one 😂 I remember playing some of it and I took it back. That game was just awful in every way. I bought it used at gamestop and glad they had that 7 day return policy for used games 😂

Pyrofire9580d ago

Would it be worth saying why?

ZeekQuattro80d ago

Simple. He's been hating on the Tomb Raider reboots for years. I can't imagine seeing them at the top of a best TR game list let alone being on the list in general sitting well with him because of it.

-Foxtrot80d ago

Zeek

“Hating”

No no, just pointing out how TR mutated into a generic action adventure game losing the appeal of what it once was when it was more about puzzles and platforming over going Rambo, slaughtering waves of enemies

But hey, continue being a dick and speaking about me like I’m not going to see the comment.

MeatyUrologist80d ago

Foxtrot, I'm curious if you have played the most recent games. Sure the 2013 reboot was hugely focused on combat, but each follow up became less and less about combat to the point where outside of a few large scale story missions I don't even remember combat being a part of shadow of the tomb raider. Shadow was so puzzle focused it actually was a bit much for me and I love the TR puzzles.

I still feel like Rise was the best of the series and I was a huge fan of the originals. To me it struck the perfect balance of exploration, platforming, puzzles, and combat. Not saying your opinion is wrong I'm just curious what you think they should have done different. Games do need to evolve somewhat to stay relevant. Would you prefer small linear jumping platform levels like the original?

RavenWolfx80d ago

I would agree Rise for 1 and the reboot as 2. Shadow is a bit high, though.

Sonic188180d ago (Edited 80d ago )

I think Shadow wasn't even develop by crystal dynamics. I thought it was the worse in the new trilogy

Pyrofire9580d ago

That's right. Shadow was developed by Eidos Montreal who who went and made Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy next. (Great game)
Meanwhile after Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics made Marvels Avengers. (bad game)

MeatyUrologist80d ago

Agrees. First two are correct but Shadow should be around 5-6.

terstomp80d ago

For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.

jznrpg80d ago

I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.

robtion80d ago

Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.
