Ten games that prove the PlayStation 4 is a JRPG powerhouse

From DigitallyDownloaded.net: "I don’t see many people talking about the PlayStation 4 as one of the best JRPG machines ever created. That might change with the double whammy of Final Fantasy XV and Persona 5 coming over the next few months, but for now if you were to listen to some people, you’d think that the console doesn’t have many good JRPGs on it at all.

"The PlayStation 4 has an excellent line up of JRPGs to suit every taste, and so this week we’re going to list our favourite JRPGs on the system. Indeed, this line up shows why this is one of our favourite consoles for the genre ever. And that’s before we have Persona 5."

Jrpgs of the past were the golden age of the genre. Rpg's of today are going the GTA route. Turned based was the way

Hoffmann2730d ago (Edited 2730d ago )

^^ this.

@Shin-Zantetsuken You write a damn lot of crap...at least in your 2nd comment.

bouzebbal2730d ago (Edited 2730d ago )

i agree, they are even reviewed as GTA games.
PS4 is the queen of JRPG together with 3DS.

Where are Ninokuni II, Dragon Quest XI, NieR, Star Ocean, Odin Sphere and FFXV in this list?

"Today the problem is that nobody buys those kind of games. Japanese developers cannot afford to make those kind of games. Just recently they tried making Project Setsuna and World of Final Fantasy but both of them bombed hard. WoFF got outsold by Last of Us Remastered in its launch month on the PSN store! That is ridiculous and unbelievable. The games that we hold so dear just do not sell these days. "

Speak for yourself. Many still buy these games and there are now more JRPGs announced on PS4/3DS than it has been last gen. There is an obvious wake up from jap developers.
If your tastes changed it's ok, but many JRPG fans from 80-90's like myself are more than happy for what's in the pipeline.
Nowadays there is way too much corruption in the media, basically the more they get fom the publisher the higher they score their games.

EDIT: one last thing about your comment about TLoU vs WoFF, both do not have the same development budget and i am sure WoFF will earn them money. If i were you i will wait and compare TLoU with FFXV. You will see FFXV will sell like hot cakes, and that is proof enough that the JRPG genre is going nowhere.

@Shin-Zantetsuken:

Nothing has changed throughout history from 90s to now and let me explain.
There are massive series like Dragon Quest and FF that sell by pallets and the other JRPGs with lower budgets lower appeal that don't sell as much but still manage to sell honorably.
to prove my point, check the sales numbers of a few great JRPGs (non FF non DQ) from 90s (according to vgchartz):

Parasite Eve 2: 580000
Front Mission 3: 520000
Skies of arcadia: 310000
Rogue Galaxy: 840000
Grandia III: 490000

@bouz-. "Speak for yourself. Many still buy these games"

This is my greatest issue with this community many of you guys don't even understand this post is in regards to objective facts it is not in regards to how he personally feels...

For a fact those games had those sales. I agree many still buy those games as do I, but the point has nothing to do with whether you personally purchase it, it has everything to do with the amount of people purchasing it is not the same amount like years prior.

"Nothing has changed throughout history from 90s to now"

I love how you're not factoring that budgets are not the same...

They could afford to do that in the 90s and make great profit they cannot afford to do that same thing in today's economy.

Sorry but Shin is correct. Has nothing to do with his personal views please stay on topic and stop making it sound as if someone is attacking the genre these are fans that are telling you this.

I've already pre-ordered in full Final Fantasy 15 and Persona 5 btw.

I don't mind some JRPG's not being turned based, but the JRPG from the 90's are still better than what they make today. I think that Japanese developers are trying to copy the success of western games too much, and that takes away the typical Japanese style of games

Nu2730d ago

Dragons Dogma is a great Jrpg

Kyosuke_Sanada2730d ago (Edited 2730d ago )

@ Shin-Zantetsuken

You, among many modern gamers, need to recognize the difference between something that's viewed twith nostalgia and something that is considered as classic. Gaming is an art form and as such, there are titles that are considered timeless in our hobby.

Articuno762730d ago (Edited 2730d ago )

@Shin-Zantetsuken: TLoU sold well recently because it is one of the prominently marketed 4k/PS Pro compatible games -- its sales are largely the result of the PS4 Pro launch.

WoFF might have fared better if this month wasn't packed to the rafters with massively marketed AAA titles and upstaged by a new console launch. That, and FFXV is only a stone's throw away so those with limited money are almost certainly going to get FFXV if they can only afford one or the other (money or time wise).

WoFF should have been released during a much quieter period. Or at least had its PS4 Pro support played up a little more.

_-EDMIX-_2729d ago

"WoFF should have been released during a much quieter period"

When? If people are willing to purchase an older title remastered as opposed to this I think it speaks volumes to the game's appeal in the first place.

I want the game to be successful but I cannot attribute its low sales simply to something like The Last of Us remastered, this is something more than The Last of Us remastered being on sale.

you have to look at the rationality of a human being trying to convince people that a brand new game is suffering in sales simply because of an older remastered title......

You sure it's just that? Really? Do you think that Horizon zero Dawn will suffer in sales because of The Last of Us remastered going on sale or on discount? Are you out of your mind? Lol

Mind you I like World of Final Fantasy...but I'm also not delusional in regards to the performance. We know why it sold less, I never saw this game having a huge Mass Appeal.

Put it this way if this game played like Kingdom Hearts it probably would have reached Millions!!!!

gangsta_red2730d ago

I disagree, I love turn based but I also loved the more fluid and fast paced action orientated style of today's jrpgs.

Fist4achin2729d ago

I hope my comment doesn't get buried, but Shin Zantetsuken does make some excellent points. Unfortunately, or fortunately we are in a time when there are so many games being released that it is hard to try and play them all. A huge percentage of us gamers just go for the big MP online games, in which there's nothing wrong with that, it's just not my cup of tea. They are only as popular as the next big one that come along.

As far as rpgs go, I think gamers attention spans have gotten much shorter. I don't know many gamers wanting to play something that is on average 50+ hours long. I still love it, but it is hard to find the time and I do like to break up the grinding with some quick gaming. I will continue to support the rpg genre and think that even though it has changed quite a bit, it's still my favorite type of game to play. I love me a great story, the tactics involved and beating a badass enemy.

Except RPGs were open world before the existence of Grand Theft Auto....

If nothing else.
No stylish combat games (Devil May Cry, Bayonetta), no proper new survival horror games, no car combat games (where the hell is a new Twisted Metal, Sony ?), no hell of a lot more genres that were once present on the PS2 and were trying to get through on the PS3.
All the new generation has is First-Person horror, First-Person action, First-Person shooters, First-Person VR gimmick bullshit and JRPGs which are trying to go away from the traditional turn-based combat, a whole lot of free-to-play stuff (mostly shooters or mobas)... Oh, and GTA clones, can't forget those ! The best time to be a gamer my ass.

MatrixxGT2730d ago

Something about this post hit all the right buttons.

To bad there's "gamers" today that will never understand how great that era was.

NapalmSanctuary2729d ago

The modern industry plays to the lowest common denominator. For the most part, the only games that get made on a AAA standard are the most casual and accessible. When they do make something more on a hardcore/traditional level, they tend not to promote it and the whole bit about them not selling well becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

sdcard4gb2729d ago

...Seems like the example of Dark Souls didn't teach these mofos at all. This industry never learns, it would seem.

Hoffmann2730d ago

Just half of the mentioned games are what I would describe as an jrpg though.

As great as games like Disgaea 5 are, they are definite not jrpg's.

Swiftfox2730d ago

I agree~ People need to realize a JRPG isnt' just an RPG made in Japan. JRPG's are also not defined by their combat systems. A JRPG is defined by a character and character relationship based narrative.

JumpAction2730d ago

That's a very good list of games. :)

For me, the place to go for traditional and non-traditional JRPGS would be the 3DS and Vita though.

SynestheticRoar2730d ago

Some desirable choice games here.Thank you .

Glad that I absolutely can't stand subscription services.

Petebloodyonion26d ago (Edited 26d ago )

I don't recall Sony forcing you to subscribe like nobody forced you to go to Blockbuster to rent games instead of buying them.

SonyStyled26d ago

Pay-per-view was almost cheaper than the cost of gas and rental fee from Blockbuster. Blockbuster doesn’t exist today. Are you being sarcastic?
