GTA is no longer the top sandbox.

When Grand Theft Auto 3 was first released, it stunned the gaming community. It even stunned the developers working on it, who up until the last minute thought it was a mess that wouldn't work. It gave gamers a....

This guy is right. Crackdown is a great game and 'refreshing' is the word.
Its just a little bit annoying that people bought it for the Halo3 beta and actually discovered a game within or just by word of mouth of those who experienced it.
And MS missed out on that window of opportunity to get a new one out as fast as possible.

I think Crackdown is a much more healthier game for the 360 than Gears and more should of been done to warrant a sequel DAY OF RELEASE and should be a game that the 360 should base its image off of instead of pretend 'hardcore' games, because we all know that audience actually doesn't exist, its just a marketing term for;
"YOU CAN KILL THINGS! FAST! AND THERE'S BLOOD! BLOODY LOADS OF IT! KILL PEOPLE YOU DON'T KNOW ONLINE! FOR FUN! ITS GOT FREAKING LOUD GUNS! CRUNCH! SKULLS A POPPING! FAST! LOOK! NO STORYLINE! OH, WAIT! YOU DON'T NEED ONE BECAUSE ITS HARDCORE! EMOTIONAL CONNECTION BETWEEN THE PROTAGONIST AND PLAYER? WHATS THAT? THAT SOUNDS GAY! THAT'S NOT MANLY! GET THAT STUFF AWAY FROM MY HARDCORE MACHINE NOW! F**K YEAH! I'LL GET OUT MY GUN LICENCE, CRISPS AND BEER! BECAUSE I'M A REAAAL MAN!"

I'd rather see a sequel of Crackdown any day than the line up MS are offering this year.
But the problem is as the article states if something doesn't come out soon enough, 'filler' and 'replacements' are bought out and this is why we have Prototype and inFAMOUS being made for next year and both of those can only be played on one console, unfortunately.

I'd still love to see a new Crackdown, but like GTA, the crown could be stolen by either or both next year because of MS not forward thinking and sticking in the 'hardcore' past.

InFamous is PS3 exclusive but Prototype is coming to both PS3 and X360

"Its just a little bit annoying that people bought it for the Halo3 beta and actually discovered a game within or just by word of mouth of those who experienced it."

I am not exactly sure why you consider it annoying........sounds like it would be great marketing.....as people who would have wrote the game off by itself......actually ended up discovering the game. It would seem annoying if the word did not get out about the game...and nobody played it.

Cajun Chicken5707d ago (Edited 5707d ago )

Yes, but only the PS3 will have both on the same machine. So hopefully, twice the sandbox fun if both games deliver. Unless a Crackdown2 comes out of nowhere for 360, but then maybe the above games would actually better it before the sequel is released.

Also its incredibly possible that without the Halo3 Beta, Crackdown wouldn't of sold at all, because at the time it wasn't typically the game that XBOX fans expected after hearing about Gears and the then upcoming Halo3 and was in a sea of FPS back then. That's the way I see it.
Maybe it saved this, but if Crackdown was going to come out on the PS2/XBOX/PS3 say, I don't think it would've needed that marketing move and just would of sold equally or better alone without essentially being bundled with a demo.
It was just MS saving advertising costs. For a game that should of been advertised so much in the first place.

Infamous will crush the sandbox ! And make it perfect again

Glad to have Ballmer on our side.lol

Overr8ed5707d ago

Yea I think so too, Doing actions that either help you out or bite you in the arse are good, Superpowers+sandbox= WTF moments.
You know what, GTA was good for about 1 month for me, its weird since a lot people told me that a GTA would last you a LONG time but it really didn't do it for me, i still haven't finished the story and I would probably not because of the other games coming out.

BabyStomper50005707d ago

I played it about the same amount of time. I was pissed I payed $60 for it and traded it in towards... something... I can't remember what. But the point is the game was nowhere near as good as it should have been because of the fact that it was multiplat. If it were only on one system or the other they would have been able to make it twice as good considering they had to build the game from the ground up on two different systems. Oh well, maybe the new PS3 exclusive from rockstar will be the next AAA game from Rockstar. *crosses fingers and waits for the next year or two*

theKiller5707d ago (Edited 5707d ago )

maybe its still famous but it lost it power with the release of GTA4, san andreas and GTA3 had the biggest impact in the gaming industry at almost any game could do!!

u will see very little sales for GTA4 DLC this fall!

inFamous and prototype probably will take the light out of GTA at least with the hardcore gamers! u also have saint raw 2, which looks much more fun than GTA4!!

Defectiv3_Detectiv35707d ago (Edited 5707d ago )

You can always tell when someone has no taste because the claim that either GTA or Halo are Teh best ever!1!1!!

And for the record, PROTOTYPE will suck. There is a reason that game got delayed. I swear, its like I'm the only person who actually watched the game vids. They were pretty awful. The only cool thing I saw in that game was the animations when your character turns into a creature. Other than that, it just looked like Hulk:Ult Destruction.

I wouldn't be surprised if they scrap the whole project. Its been a while since we heard anything new.

Honestly though, inFamous is going to rule all these games. I think this game will be reminiscent of what GTA4 should have been, partly because the devs. will have plenty of space to build a massive city with. Not to mention the story looks interesting, the graphics are clean, and the gameplay is innovative.

AngryXbot5706d ago (Edited 5706d ago )

Its because Rockstar went to the 360. You start the game and you can see how much it really is old gen GTA with little improvements on graphics. Its because the game was multi platform and they had to take the 360 into account with its inferior DVD.

DONT BELIEVE ME. WATCH THIS VIDEO. ****THIS IS HOW GTA4 SHOULD HAVE LOOKED IF IT WAS EXCLUSIVE FOR THE PS3****

BEHOLD AND FEAST YOUR EYES ON THE UNBELIEVABLE POWER OF THE PS3. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN I BRING YOU THE JAWDROPPING UNBELIEVABLE *****OOOOOOOPPPPPPPEEEEEEENNNN NNNN WORLDDDDDDDDD******* 13 MINUTES OF GAMEPLAY FROM THE ULTRA EXCITING PS3 EXCLUSIVE KNOWN AS INFAMOUS:

http://www.gametrailers.com...

TRIPLE A MATERIAL AND INFAMOUS IS SET FOR A MARCH 2009 RELEASE. BE AFRAID XBOTS. BE VERY AFRAID. FOR THE END IS NEAR.

Take a look at that video. Everything in there is fking NEXT GEN gameplay. THATS how GTA4 would have looked like if it was truly pushed on the PS3. No matter, INFAMOUS is the next KING of open world sandbox gameplay. INFAMOUS raises the standard and the bar to new heights.

INFAMOUS. Another triple A game for the PS3. Where else but on PS3 will you find such unique and exciting content. PS3, play beyond!

InfiniteUnfloppery5707d ago

Indeed,Infamous is now the most praised Open World game

MAGNUM-RAM5707d ago

gta4 left so much to be desired that there are some pretty close contenders.
San andreas gta was the bar in terms of gameplay. Spiderman was always potentially
perfect. The incredible hulk surprised many. The story in the godfather was great. The warriors
improoved combat. Crackdown's simplicity was engaging. Saintsrow showcased new graphics.

I place my crown on GTA San andreas.

There are some strong contenders but if anyone misses on these great games feats
consider it metropolis & you are superman. Superman was my biggest sandbox dissappointment.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies3d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken3d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing694d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker4d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing694d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt3d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken3d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.

Where are These Missing VR Games?

As is they're coins down a sofa, some announced games seem to just disappear. So just where are these missing VR games?

There wont be enough demand until the tech gets better and more affordable.

ApocalypseShadow55d ago

The article is more concerned with where the announced games are. Not about VR demand.

Even with my thoughts on Facebook, they did supposedly sell over 20 million headsets. Not that I think that many are still using their Quest headsets. But even if it's only 10 million users and 5 million are interested and able to play GTA SA, that's still a lot of consumers and a lot of sales.

It just comes down to why these developers are taking so long. Is something like GTA canceled? Is it being held back for a future event? It's not like there's competition in the stand alone space. And now that I have a Quest 3 myself, I'm wondering as well what's the hold up.

Profchaos55d ago

For GTA SA
Meta made a lot of budget cuts and cancelled a fair few exclusive game contracts we don't know if this was cancelled but it's possible and this was announced prior to the release of GTA definitive edition which was slammed and eventually moved to be supported in house by Rockstar.

Since then we have just gotten the mobile versions a d they are actually the best way to play the definitive edition unfortunately the consoles never got a retrospective patch to implement the improvements they made in the mobile games.

But for VR we know a VR mode was found in the definitive editions game files thanks to data miners so seeming it was meant to be using the definitive edition as a base given its ue4 that makes sense. And the mode is there right now (some Polish may be required still) I would assume this is ready to go but meta got cold feet and cancelled it given the games reputation.

I do hope Rockstar forge ahead and still just launch it anyway on psvr2 as it's a game I've loved since day 1 on PS2 I'll even tolerate the de version to get it in VR

GTA 6 Still Set for 2025, Significant Cost Cuts Coming but No Current Layoff Plans

"Grand Theft Auto" publisher Take-Two Interactive is working on an "significant" cost reduction plan following mixed earnings results for its October-December 2023 quarter
