Will Nioh Be a Breakaway Success?

Developer Tecmo Koei concluded their latest beta demo for NiOh on September 4th, and I had an opportunity to spend extensive time with it. With that said, does this game have what it takes to become a "breakaway success?"

It will be a great game but I am not sure about the commercial success.

bouzebbal2757d ago

mouth to ear will work for it, if it proves to be good! i'm definitely keeping an eye on it. I could sense the potential from the last playable demo.

BlackOni2757d ago

I hope we're both wrong in our thinking here, but yes, I agree. Absolutely loved how it played, aside from the ki system needing to be reworked (which it will be.) I'll do my part in showing people why it's awesome in hopes that it does well enough to warrant more.

VsAssassin2757d ago

Based on my experience with it, I would have to answer with the resounding yes. SoulsBourne players will like most of it, save for the lack of PvP. In fairness to Tecmo-Koei they haven't said anything about its exclusion/inclusion.

I could see it being a hit. Souls type games aren't as niche as they once were. Ds3 seemed to do very well, bloodborne was a hit. They said lords of the fallen made profit day one so obviously the market for more challenging games has grown. That being said nioh has a great setting and from what ive played I found it to be a day one purchase.

Looks an awful lot like Geralt

I can see it hitting a million, yeah. True it's a new IP and definitely geared more towards the hardcore than casuals, but if it hooks some of the NInja Gaiden/Onimusha/Soulsborne crowd, plus makes a good showing in Japan, it's got odds.

Biggest thing I see eating into it a bit, as it will everything, is Horizon:Zero Dawn a couple weeks after. Nioh'll need legs as Sony's marketing attention switches quickly from game to game to game (Yakuza, Nier, Persona etc).

Safe to say Q1 belongs to ARPGs. From a pure gameplay standpoint though, this might be the one to beat.

The Status of Every PlayStation Franchise

Sony owns a fair few iconic franchises - many dating right back to the original PlayStation. But while we’re pretty familiar with the likes of ongoing series such as God of War, Horizon, and Gran Turismo, there are plenty of PlayStation franchises that haven’t seen the light of day in a long time. So in this video, we’re going to be taking a look at the status of PlayStation’s many IPs, and checking in on when we last heard from them.

Status in one word:

Underutilized.

The end.

anast10h ago

Which ones should they utilize more?

BehindTheRows9h ago

Indeed. We hear this “underutilized” talk as if every old franchise should have a comeback or reboot.

When new IPs start looking like Concord, you can't blame people for wanting another Resistance or Killzone instead.

anast7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

J&D and Resistance are good ones. As much as I love these, though, I'm not sure they would payoff without an enormous marketing push. Younger gamers today do not have taste and the older gamers that would appreciate these might not be enough. But yeah, I would day 1 Resistance.

Well that’s just the consequence of consistently producing new IPs isn’t it. Not all studios can be or want to be like polyphony digital who made gran turismo all the time.

Here lies The Infamous Series; once a shining beacon of free flying, lighting bolt sniping, and wire riding amazing gameplay, it has been laid to rest and be forgotten for what seems like forever despite being loved by millions. Plot next to Wipeout across from NBA Jam.

Lightning775h ago

Still baffling they cancelled Twisted Metal, Factions 2 and Spider-Man Multiverse LS game but thought Concord looked good enough.

Chocoburger4h ago

Ape Escape, Parappa / Lammy, Gravity Rush, good times. Always hoping for them to make a return, or at least similar type games, such as the newly-announced Astro Bot, but one game isn't enough. Bring back the joyfulness of the 90's era of gaming.
