VR won't go mainstream until its cord problem is solved

One of the biggest problems with current generation VR headsets is all the cords that tether you to the computer you're using. HTC has an answer for that, but unfortunately it's a $220 accessory.

Silly me, thinking that price was a problem...

therealsasquatch2746d ago

The other big issue is folks be barfing.

Erik73572746d ago

And resolution, and refresh rate, and motion blur, we got awhile before this thing isn't gimmicky

WeAreLegion2746d ago

Resolution, refresh rate, and motion blur are perfectly fine. An overwhelming majority of people love VR in its current form. It will get better, but it is fine as is.

freshslicepizza2746d ago

is fine a huge selling point? the irony is sony is very quiet about how much better psvr is with the ps4 pro because they dont want vanilla ps4 users to feel inferior. which is why the main reason the ps4 pro was created is to help and compete in the vr world.

Erik73572745d ago (Edited 2745d ago )

Well for you maybe but for me I demand better quality before I deem this not gimmicky. Majority of people? Who n4g comments? Yea that's a great way of understand the majority.

@moldybread
YEs fine is fine for PS fanboys, they are in denial of this mediocre experience. This is the first generation of VR, its not good.

I remember early days of videogames.. and playstation1... and sega mega drive and atari 2600...

people got grazy and really appreciate the enormous amount of effort that tech giant and developers do to offer new things and mode to play...

Novadays... with this completely out of control internet ... anyone have the opportunity to write everything without any sense... despise every single piece of hardware, game, device, design... developer...

today... people will fill their mouth with acronyms to tech like... RESOLUTION... NATIVE... FPS... FRAME DROPS... Tflops... Fanboy... the powwwaa of de claaauuddd.... the powwwa of the dx12....
AND THE VERY NEW...

MOTION SIKNESSSSSSSSSS.........

This is strange because in early days of wolfenstein3d / doom... this MOTION sickness are EXACTLY THE SAME... and doom run in 320x240x8bit... but NO ONE.... COMMENT ON THIS...

the problem is the people not the tech itself.

A message for all people...

Play your day "TODAY" use your past to make a "balanced choice" and see the future for WHAT the3 future IS...
" only a promise without any guarantee. "...

FunAndGun2746d ago

It all starts somewhere and I'm super glad I have VR in my living room. I understand that technology evolves however, so I tend to focus on what it's able to do and not what it's missing.

You would probably enjoy a lot more things in life with a more positive outlook.

SonyWarrior2746d ago

the thing holding vr back the most right now id say is the field of view. i like looking around with my eyes and thats something you cant really do in vr. racing games are still limited in cockpit view because when looking forword you still wont have a clue some ones aside you unless you turn your head, in real life youd obviously know some ones aside you. i know these super field of fiew VR's are on the horizon though so its just a matter of time

jukins2746d ago

Idk so far the 3d audio has been filling in for the lack peripheral vision at least for me and the games I've played

SonyWarrior2746d ago

not for me and im specifically talking about driveclub vr you never know where they are exactly unless you twist your whole head that direction and look for them

Errorist762746d ago (Edited 2745d ago )

It will be at least two generations until widescreen and eye tracking will be a thing.

k2d2745d ago

Kid doesn't know the difference between gimmick and novelty. VR is absolutely novel - but people are clueless if they think it will wear off any time soon.

I'd compare VR to 3d pc gaming in the 90's.

Only it'll be an optional alternative to traditional gaming.

Yeah right,
VR games are fun and something new and no cord will stop you from having fun.

So tired of gaming sites, all they do is down games instead of giving them credit.

Being able to get up and walk around a VR world massively improves the immersion, even when you are confined to a relatively small area. That's what elevates the Vive to the top of the pile (according to pretty much all comparisons with the Rift). Cords become a much bigger problem in that scenario, so wireless is a massive improvement for the Vive.

15ms latency and 1.5hr battery life aren't perfect though, and price and availability aren't great right now.

Fingers crossed CES brings more good news.

mochachino2746d ago

It needs more quality games more than anything.

And a sharper image.

Erik73572745d ago

It looks like a kinect situation all over again. Interesting concept with terrible games

mochachino2744d ago

Respectfully I disagree, Kinect was a horrible way to control games. I couldn't imagine there being any quality and deep experiences using Kinect as a control method, it was so limited.

VR, however, has amazing potential with every type of game. The experience is truly tranformative and I've the controllers are amazing. The only problems I see are the lack of quality gaming experiences, price, and the visual clarity should be better.

Erik73572744d ago (Edited 2743d ago )

Replace VR in your comment with kinect and it is verbatim the same thing people said about kinect.
Yes just like kinect is a "transformative experience" games still were terrible just like games for VR and it died.

mochachino2743d ago (Edited 2743d ago )

But traditional games would all work with VR. Probably better. Have you tried Vive? It's pretty amazing.

The only similaritie between Kinect and VR is the lack of games. With Kinect, that was due to the hardware being incapable of providing quality experiences due it it being akin to a very inaccurate d-pad controller with no buttons. VR, on the other hand, controls better than traditional pads. It's literally like aiming in real life, even looking down the sites.

Bottom line is Kinect was a gimmick, VR, is definitely not. It works and works as advertised.

Erik73572743d ago (Edited 2743d ago )

I just couldn't see myself using VR as my main form of gaming

TXIDarkAvenger2746d ago

Well with Vive having the wireless accessory, it wouldn't be much of a surprise that Gen 2 will be wireless. I'd expect other VR headsets to follow too.

Errorist762745d ago

Transferring all this data wirelessly simply isn't possible yet...especially lag free. There would also be batteries involved, another problem for price and weight.

TXIDarkAvenger2744d ago

Actually it is possible just not lag free atm. Regardless, this cord issue isn't really a problem as to why VR isn't mainstream yet. Also I said gen 2 not right now.

Errorist762744d ago

Even if it was lag free just the data transfer would use up so much power no battery would be sufficient. I guess we'll have to live with cables for quite some time.

It could be free and it wouldn't matter at this point. There isn't really a PCVR Market and I say that as a PCVR user. It is modders and enthusiasts with a few retail products on Steam.
