Despite it's very repetitious gameplay, it was a lot of good fun and had some cool stuff. The story was also excellent.

What sites? The game was getting hate for the simple fact no day 1 reviews. No major outlet was hyping Mafia 3. An over hyped game would be No Mans Sky. Not Mafia 3. You're getting over hyped confused with excitement.

Maybe it's my perception of hype, but I can't say it was hyped. It was covered heavily the week before and after release. But, before then, we had a reveal...a couple details...and the pre-release trailer and gameplay. IMO, hype is when you get constant coverage. You get an article every other day about some small, minuscule detail of the game or a quote from a dev from a tweet. Mafia III didn't really have that.

Yeah I would say do that, the games story is actually really good, it kind of reminds me of those older movies late 80s how they tell the story. (don't want to spoil it), it's just really well done. The missions could've used some tweaks because you do feel like you're doing the same thing after a while, but the problem is the repetition isn't like Skyrim where it's hidden, like its on the surface of the game. However, I give the game a solid 8/10 great game. I haven't beat it yet either and i'm roughly 20 hours in.

Its ok to enjoy a game that most do not, but to call it underrated? Its getting the recognition it deserves, a very broken game that just gets boring after the first hour. I hate this just as much as when ppl call a game overrated just cause they're in the minority of ppl who disliked it.

They shut down Irrational to make this, spent tens of millions over years, need 8 million just to break even, and the best they could do was announce how they "shipped" 4.5 million copies to retailers. It's mixed reviews are well deserved, at this point the sale drop off will be tremendous.

It has two things going for it a good story and a unique setting. I beat it and enjoyed it but towards the end I was tired of doing the same stuff over and over. Anyone in the fence should just wait for a good sale.

Yeah. The game wasn't terrible. It was a game for sure. But mediocre describes it perfectly. 4 missions on repeat that were all the same essentially anyway. No side missions. No dynamic world missions. No character or car customization. The story was good. I enjoyed that. Mostly. But the repetitive missions just made me not want to bother. Gameplay was fine. But it was easy enough to just ghost by with my knife 90% of the time so that got old to.
Not a terrible game like I said. Just so mediocre.

I somehow feels it's the best game for watching a let's play..so I can forward the repetitive missions if I get bored.

I enjoyed this game a lot. I usually only get an hour of gametime on weekdays ...and for that one hour a day it gave me exactly what I wanted.

Very strange that everyone has picked up this repetitive line & ran with it. 2K obviously didnt want it to be repetitive which is why I would assume they designed it so that you always have the choice of 5+ different missions to choose from at anyone time.

I've played it for 10+ hours switching up the jobs the whole time & only come across 4 missions that feel repetitive. Being the bosses when you have to return to their business location that you've already cleared. You only have to repeat that once each boss. The way some people explain this game to others completely throws me. Makes me think I'm playing a completely different game to others.

I'm just saying I've played 10+ hours on PC & haven't had any real problems or found it repetitive. Yet the general consensus from N4G is it's a completely broken mess that is so repetitive that you'll struggle to make it through the first hour before getting bored or frustrated by it.

The moment I realised it wasn't 2K Czech anymore who developed it and they made a brutal soldier shooter out of it, I realised something was wrong.

That's the problem. Some people complained that the first 2 Mafia games didn't do enough with their "open" worlds. The devs tried that and fell into the open world trap...repetition. I still enjoyed the game for the awesome story and the great mechanics. But, the repetition does get to a grind after a while. That being said, repetition kills many open world games for me...even including some of the best games.

this game is broken on PC and what they do? yes,they release DLC :D almost a month and no patches or fixes.this game in not underrated,this game is just broken and they are doing nothing to fix it.

soundtrack and the characters, probably the best thing the game has going for it, story is simple and straight forward but characters are well written. Combat is competent and the animations after hits from bullets are just great, satisfying shooting. But too much of it tbh,

And the nemesis system was great because of the randomness of the encounters, and the special perks bosses, mafia doesnt possess any of these.

I think the more interesting thing about the story is the way that it is told. The documentary-styled narration is so good. Not only because of the content, but because it is befitting of the time. It's almost conspiratorial in it's affect...like the person shooting the footage shouldn't be getting such juicy information. As for the soundtrack, it might be my favorite of all time....at very least it's a 1b to GTA Vice City.

If a game excels at certain areas but fails at others it's debatable if it's overrated. I say it isn't. It just depends if you can overlook weak and repetitive gameplay for a good story.

Main character is a bomb, love it, modern day Kratos :) the rest of the game is lame.
