Final Fantasy IX A Review From when RPG's Were Great.

Many Years ago Final Fantasy IX was released. Now many years later the game has released on Steam and PSN. So here is my review of the classic!-Sidearc

My second favorite. I don't think 6 can ever be bested but I certainly do love 9. I wish FF16 would take a break from all this reality based/ steam/ magic punk aesthetic and go back to medieval for at least one game. Even though 12 is one of the weaker games that was probably the most refreshing thing about it....it's been 10 years since that was released.

That's what made FF9 so charming. It felt like an actual fantasy. The grounded realistic FF games feel like scifi adventures not what I imagine when I think of fantasy.

Yeah we still get some great ones! ..Just not quite the number we used to :(

Not really? We still get some good RPGs, JRPGs and otherwise, but we get a lot more crappy to mediocre action games calling themselves RPGs (look to EA and Bioware for examples) and mid tier JRPGs that embody all of the most overdone cliches in JRPGs with little of what made them interesting (most of the more recent Tales of games, Sword Art, sadly even Star Ocean 5.)

Yeah there are some real gems hidden in among the thinly disguised action games and heaps of trash, but compared to the mid-late 90s and early 2000s (more or less a golden age for both JRPGs and western RPGs) it's kinda a sad state of affairs. Frankly, Obsidian, Atlus and a few others have basically been carrying the torch for like a decade now and as far as JRPGs go SE has only recently decided that maybe it's a good idea to make the types of games that literally built their fortune again, and they're doing it with a far smaller side studio while continuing the main stream trend with their big franchise.

I hope Final Fantasy 16 is like 9. Let's go old school. Have the medieval fantasy back, airships and stuff.
