PlayStation VR Already Price Dropped In The UK, Even With Strong Sales

Anyone know why these retailers are dropping the price? Doesn't make sense. You would think they would raise the price and make even more profit considering the demand for the PSVR.

It's a common thing in the UK. There's very heavy price competition in big selling items to get people into their stores. The point is to get people into their store, buy low-priced items that they will only allow you to exchange for store credit, and get you to buy other things from them.

I'd say it's to help overshadow the news of 'Other companies dabbling in similarly cheap VR', which we saw news of not long ago. Vive and Oculus is easy competition for it - but if other brand-names start releasing theirs? With Sony not reacting to it in any way? They may try to steal some of its thunder or market - By doing this, they reaffirm a competitive stance that they want to initiate the 'Beginning of VR' in their own eyes, even if theirs isn't the absolute best, but via public awareness and sales among the 'Known 3 so far'.

This type of discounts typically signals slow sales. If it is for promotional reasons like Christopher is suggesting, it would be something more advertised at a fixed price that is nice to look at. Say, get PS VR for 329 pounds at so and so retailer. I suppose the retailer would know the return/exchange rate, and I assume any returned units go back to Sony.

This isn't good at all for the future of VR!

Come on you know how this works already, when something doesn't sell they do a price drop, enough said & reading strong sales does not make sense. Once a item is hot stores increase the price. We have seen this trend for years & trends for something that does not sell good get priced down.

the initial retail price was inflated, the retailers knew fans would snap them up so basically exploited them.

the new lower price is actually the price they always intended to sell the product at to normal consumers.

Agreed it's great news...these headsets should really cost us 250...and with the PC manufacturers releasing a slew of new cheap VR headsets that are windows 10 compatible for 300 dollars at launch Sony is dropping the price sooner rather than later. I thought that. I do wonder what sales are like in the UK though as I know loads of people with a ps4 but not one person has psvr. I don't know to many people who have a vr headset to only 2 people know who have one and both got them free with the galaxy phones.

Because all hardware sales are reported in Japan on a weekly basis. PS4, WiiU, Xbox One etc by a company called Media Create. If anything it sold a lot less in Japan than most places.

No, one retailer is reducing the price by £17:50. The UK is a very competitive market, hardly anything is sold at rrp.

The big difference is that kinect is a Microsoft device (the people that give everything a non-standard connector so that you are bound to buy their products or adapters).
Microsoft are masters of getting every penny they can from their consumers.

That being said, kinect was available at a reduced price in the UK also (everything is).

To be honest I'm shocked when electronics are offered at RRP (as in "how do they expect to sell any").

Just dropped £500 on one with a selection of games. Shame I didn't wait a few more days and save a few quid but me n Amazon don't get one so to be honest I'm glad I bought mine from my local independent store. Even managed to avoid buying it from Game!

If you're in the US, I'd get psvr first. They both cost the same, but my guess is the pro will drop faster. even if not, you'll have access to more games and a new way to play those games right away rather than the same games with better graphics. Of course that's all assuming you already own a vanilla ps4

Edit: for some reason I didn't catch that last bit. Yeah, if the games don't appeal to you I can't recommend it. It'll just be a paper weight at that point.

A tiny £16 price drop which may well be an adjustment to reflect currency fluctuations or just a bone to try and get more pre-orders on the books. November is the time when most retailers, online and brick, will make most sales and in the run-up to Black Friday, stuff like this is expected. If the price drop was, say £75 to £100, we can start making judgements about the PSVR. I myself got mine on Oct. 13th and I have had 3 weeks of fun and I have another on order for December for my sister as she keeps borrowing mine! Even at the release price the PSVR is good value.

Sorry to sound pessimistic but is there actually anyone here from the UK that has PSVR?

I'd say that almost everyone of my friends have a PS4 although there is a few that are strictly Xbox. Not a single one of them has PSVR or have even really spoke about it. I think VR was at its biggest hype around the time Samsung released the S7 but it very sharply faded out & no one appears to be particularly interested in it anymore. Maybe it's just my age group I don't know but with these "huge sales figures" you would think you would at least come across it from time to time. When I ask people about it they're generally not even aware that it's even out yet & they're not particularly interested in trying it in a hurry. Never mind buying one.

By the way this doesn't just go for PSVR it goes for my PC Gamers too who are more interested but just not at current price range.

*on topic - I think the price drop is probably more likely to be the big super markets dropping the prices so other retailers having to if they want the sales in the lead up to Christmas. We seen this also with the PS4Pro. Tesco was the first to drop the price. Coincidently to the same odd price as this PSVR drop then Amazon etc followed to price match. Plus it seems a bit stupid to price a peripheral more expensive than the actual console itself.

I am from the UK and I and 16 of my gamer friends got the PSVR on launch day.

In fact, as of this morning, I know 23 people who own a PSVR and so that is 2 dozen UK owners right there!

The fact is that there are some people who would prefer the PSVR not be as successful as it is turning out to be. This includes many Xbox fanboys and, sad to say, some PC gamers who have no reason to see PSVR as a threat. If anything the PSVR by being successful in the mass market will be good for the industry as a whole.

It's just still not a mature enough format to release publicaly. It's still a gimick. Don't get me wrong, it's the best attempt made so far but it's still not ready to be its own legitimate format.

If I'm honest I think the only reason for that is because VR is always going to need superior technology but companies constantly want to make it for as cheap as possible. I understand they need to sell units & then also make profit on top of that as well. The VR formats very ethos is future technology & we need to understand that it's not going to be what we want it to be if we keep repeatedly shoehorning it in to consumer greed.

I have a serious question for anyone tht coucld help.
I wasnt really interested in VR until tryig out some apps on my Samsung Gear which were actually really cool. Only problem is when i took it off after 45 mins session I began to suffer with nausia which lasted a good hour.
Do you get this with PSVR or is it perhaps a more refined experience? I wondered if the Samsung Gear.isnt quite the same standards hence the sickness.

There is no real price drop. This is a £16 adjustment so that retailers can match each other's prices...a real price drop for the situation that you describe would be over £100. PSVR has been selling out stocks and delivery dates for orders placed today are now in December.
