‘Shadow of the Tomb Raider’ Purportedly Leaked as Next Tomb Raider Title on Montreal Subway

The title for the next game in Square Enix’s rebooted Tomb Raider series may have been leaked today, after an image purporting to show a member of the public working on a presentation for the title was revealed.

paddy952765d ago

Please don't be in icy conditions again :O

AnotherProGamer2764d ago

Please bring back supernatural creatures like mummies and dinosaurs

No more armored mercenaries and bears please

robtion2764d ago

I vote tropical jungle for the next location. Maybe with a nice volcano for some next gen lava. Plus some snorkelling/spear fishing and then upgrade to scuba diving. Also add some dinosaurs if you like.

nitus102764d ago

You obviously haven't played TR1 and TR2 since you play in those locations. Of course, Lara's main claim to fame is destroying with extream prejudice all those endangered and rare animals. Now we know why we don't see T-Rex's, Raptors and Dragons anymore. 😉

medman2764d ago

I want Africa...and I want all kinds of conditions, from jungle to desert to big cats to elephants. I want it all.

YUSSSSSSS!!!

I've lost count of how many times I've played through the reboot and RotTR, so it's nice to know the next entry is in the works... the alleged title all but confirms that Ian Milham will be taking the series in a darker, Dead Spacey-er direction - here's hoping for some tense, jump-scare ridden tombs to go with the puzzle/platformer types.

robtion2764d ago

The darker 'Descent' vibe of the re-boot is one of the reasons I still prefer it to ROTTR. Happy to see them go back to that for the 3rd game.

Also, love the original Dead Space.

TheVigilanteCode2765d ago

Developed by eidos and not crystal dynamics, so in other words it isn't gonna be an Uncharted cinematic clone, but a true old school Tomb Raider?

Massive spike in interest with this IP again. Can't wait for the reveal. Do it Square.

starchild2764d ago

Ugh it wasn't an Uncharted clone. Uncharted has borrowed more from Tomb Raider than the other way around. Even Uncharted 3 showed clear influences from the newer Tomb Raider. But there's nothing wrong with that. All games borrow elements from each other. The newer Tomb Raider games had their own identity and they were great.

TheManicCoder2764d ago

@Starchild the disagrees you are getting says it all.. It's amazing how much people don't know how much Uncharted was influenced by Tomb Raider by some degree. Just like the new reboot was influenced by Uncharted.. it happens guys. No one is saying one is better than the other.

And @TheVigilanteCode, I also look forward to the old school Tomb Raider type :)

starchild2764d ago

Yeah, you just have to laugh at the fanboys on this site. They are unreasonable and utterly biased. Tomb Raider and Uncharted are both outstanding series that have proven their worth over time. And they have certainly influenced each other.

Articuno762764d ago (Edited 2764d ago )

What is it exactly that Tomb Raider borrowed from Uncharted because I can't think of a single thing. Do you mean the adventuring aspect that is based more on films like Indiana Jones/generations of legends? Because those elements were never original to Tomb Raider.

Or do you mean more general concepts that Tomb Raider helped establish within the action-adventure genre such as moving a character in 3D/advanced animation? Almost none of those things Uncharted uses as is -- instead, drawing on any number of games which have taken and refined what Tomb Raider started over a decade before -- such that it would be hard to really credit Tomb Raider with them at all in anything but the most abstract sense.

Tomb Raider borrowed far more from Uncharted than the reverse. The entire style of bombastic set-piece driven third-person action-adventure was the signature of the Uncharted series. It might not seem that way now as most AAA games since have aimed to do things similar.

But make no mistake, when I see Lara Croft tumbling down a hillside as a crumbling plane crashes thunderously after her I, and almost everyone who played Tomb Raider 2013 when it was new, immediately saw the Uncharted influence because that kind of style was synonymous with Uncharted at the time (and the parallels go deeper, for example, the way navigation in Uncharted is largely automated and used for pacing rather than as the meat of gameplay is something Tomb Raider 2013 took from Uncharted, whereas Uncharted always approached this different from the original Tomb Raider games).

If you don't believe that Uncharted had a big influence of TR2013 then you have to ask yourself, why is it that no one was making parallels between Uncharted and Tomb Raider BEFORE then? The answer is simple: because Uncharted took pretty much nothing from old Tomb Raider, but new Tomb Raider did take something from Uncharted.

Look at the massive difference of gameplay style and narrative approach between Underworld and TR2013 and notice how, in almost every single way, the things that differentiate TR2013 from Underworld read almost exactly like a list of how Uncharted differs from Underworld.

-Foxtrot2764d ago (Edited 2764d ago )

Nope

For Uncharted they were more interested in creating a cinematic third person adventure game like Indiana Jones then copying Tomb Raider

For the Tomb Raider reboot the developers basically looked at Uncharted and were like "right lets just do that but we'll have open world small hubs instead of chapters". They didn't do their own thing.

Tomb Raider has literally turned into a shadow of it's former self to copy Uncharted. Funnily enough Shadow of the Tomb Raider seems kind of fitting considering it's a shadow of it's former self.

Point is there's a difference between being influenced a little and copying completely.

Imalwaysright2764d ago (Edited 2764d ago )

@ Articuno76

"which have taken and refined what Tomb Raider started"

You're absolutely right. TR did started it. How can you say something like that and on the same breath say that you can't see how TR influenced Uncharted? Simply put, Uncharted would NOT exist if TR didn't exist before it. That's how much TR influenced Uncharted.

"Or do you mean more general concepts that Tomb Raider helped establish within the action-adventure genre such as moving a character in 3D/advanced animation?"

That's not the only thing that TR established. TR1 that set the template for action adventure games. You will NOT find any game before it that had exploration, puzzle solving, climbing, platforming, killing enemies and swimming in a single package before it. TR1 is a genre defining game that set the standard for action adventure games. In its sequels, driving vehicles, hand to hand combat, stealth, qtes... were added to that template well before the 1st Uncharted even existed.

Uncharted did influence the reboots mainly with its over the top cinematic set pieces but to say that TR is just an Uncharted copy is laughable. When I pick up the controller to control new Lara I'm doing the SAME exact things that I did 20 years ago. With gameplay mechanics that fit today's standards (that weren't invented by ND) but the same EXACT things.

As for the reboots narrative, I don't see what does Uncharted have to with it. If anyhting the reboots have a tone a more similar to TloU however TR 2013 and TloU were released in the same year

Hopefully square dont take that third party exclusive $$ from ms again.

Ms: we got another fat check for you!
Square: naww bra were good 😏

poppinslops2764d ago

What makes you think they won't? SE have earned a reputation for their 'questionable' business decisions (RotTR's release schedule, episodic Hitman/FFVII, Deus Ex's 'augmented' pre-orders/microtransactions, locking the FFXV demo behind a paywall, etc) and it's not as though they've waited around to see how the PS4 version of RotTR does before greenlighting a sequel... fact is, you have no idea how much $$$ MS gave them.

thatguyhayat2764d ago

If memory serves well, I think MS went derp and marketed it on same release date as Fallout 4. Rather than delaying it.... well you know what happened.

poppinslops2764d ago (Edited 2764d ago )

Well, yeah - the game was profitable enough for SE to start work on the next Tomb Raider... SotTR's current-gen status means it'll almost certainly be a bigger, more expensive game than it's predecessor, so the fact that it's already in development suggests SE are satisfied with RotTR's performance - that, or MS has given them more $$$.

PizzaSteve2764d ago

Lets just hope SE learnt their lesson. Making exclusive deal of a game like TR that sells the most on PS consoles wasn't a very smart move.

ThePope2764d ago

Yeah totally. Such a dumb move that well before PS sales were out a third game in the trilogy is already under development. I mean the game only sold like 4 total copies between X1/PC, and is on pace to sell 4.3 billion copies on PS. Man SE is so dumb.

2764d ago
ThePope2764d ago

@nasebot

The point of my sarcasm is apparently not. The game did so well on X1 and PC that game 3 was obviously green lit well before the PS version even released. And they didn't ignore the PS fan base the game is out on the PS4. Maybe you can't see what I'm saying because of the location of your head...

ShottyatLaw2765d ago

Hopefully it continues to improve. Loved the direction of the last two.

I like the survival aspect as a gameplay mechanic, but it's going to be hard to sell us on the plot if Lara is stranded in the forest for the third time. Unless they bring back the T-Rex and they go full Jurassic World. That would be an amazing game.

Zero Dawn sold really well so I’m not sure this belongs. The second game released next to a big game again and it hurt it some I forget what it was though, oh yeah Elden Ring .
But a good game is a good game to me I don’t care when they release personally but they do have to think about it when you want to get more people to buy it.

The Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy's Take on Lara Croft Deserved More Recognition

The Survivor Trilogy was a drastic reimagining of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, and it provokes changes for the character that are truly fantastic.

Deserves less IMO, i think the 1st in the new trilogy was a perfect 1st step for the new direction. The next 2 games were half steps at best. Not only that, every character in the series including Lara is just annoying and doesn't make sense in terms of motive, like yes they have a motive, but none of it seems proportional to the lengths they are willing to go through for it. The most annoying thing is every one of the games say "become the Tomb Raider" yet 3 games later and we're still not there? No thanks. Then there's the mess of the 3rd game, massive skill tree that serves almost no purpose as there's literally only like 3-4 short encounters in the whole game, and they took till the 3rd game to finally manage some decent puzzles even remotely close to previous games in the series. Nah, the trilogy infuriated me to no end as a long time fan of the series, i hope we get better going forward cause that crap sucked.

Army_of_Darkness498d ago

The first in the trilogy was my favorite. I thought they were going into the right direction with that one until the second one came out and seemed like a graphical downgrade but the gameplay was okay. As for the Third, Graphics were really nice but it was kinda boring me to death with its non-stop platforming and exploring with not enough action! Well, for me anyway...

DeathTouch498d ago

Graphics on the 3rd one were abysmal. It’s more colorful and has more variety, but everything else was a noticeable downgrade.

The more open world with NPC quests was also handled very poorly, to the point I missed Angel of Darkness.

thesoftware730498d ago

I know it is your opinion, but she did progress as a character in each game, she even got more muscular and seasoned.

That is the thing, people first complained that there was not enough platforming and actual tomb raiding in the first and second games. Shadow remedied that and kept the combat elements.

3-4 encounters? huh? did we play the same game? there was plenty of combat and, the skill tree did matter, like being able to hang enemies from trees, set explosives traps on bodies, being able to counter, and that are just a few of the combat skills. The skill tree also had things like being able to hold your breath underwater longer, crafting upgrades, zipline upgrade, and climbing upgrades that all changed how you can approach situations.

Not knocking your opinion, but we definitely had different experiences. I had 98% completion on the shadow.

SoulWarrior498d ago (Edited 498d ago )

Sorry but i'm with him about the low number of encounters, the game throws loads of weapons and skills you're way with a comparatively low amount of places to actually use them, so they felt under utilised.

-Foxtrot500d ago

Yeah...no

It was awful, for THREE GAMES it was "become the Tomb Raider" where she went back to square one after each game. Not to mention after a huge reaction of killing someone for the first time she then becomes Rambo straight after and goes on a slaughter spree without a single other reaction. Her development was all over the place.

She was whiney, weak and in later game a little arrogant and selfish

Oh and the voice actress compared to the previous ones was not as good

Lara Croft deserved better and while they are decent games as they are, we deserved actual Tomb Raider games, we could have had better survival games if they just stuck with the original Lara Crofts origin about her plane going down. Surviving 2 weeks in the Himalayas...I'd have liked to seen that, who knows what mystical threat she could have faced in the mountains or underground some secret concealed cave.

Tacoboto498d ago

I thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider had better gameplay than Rise, but it annoyed me the most of the trilogy when I stopped to think about the story.

It's like they deliberately decided to make her unlikeable and did nothing to make the character you're playing as likeable or have even one sign of humility.

SoulWarrior500d ago

2013 I thought was a fine entry, but Rise and especially Shadow were painfully mediocre follow ups imo, I really didn't like how selfish and angry her character was in those two.

Terry_B498d ago

No. Please forget the crap completely.

northpaws498d ago

First one was decent, played through it twice.
Second one was okay, played through it once.
Third one was really bad, tried twice a year apart, still can't get through the first two hours, it is just really bad.

thesoftware730498d ago

Honest question, what did you find bad about it? the opening 2 hrs of Shadow were fantastic imo.

The opening was very similar to the first 2, what did you find really bad?

Not looking for an argument, just an honest question.

Starman69498d ago

3rd one just didn't feel like a tomb raider game. Possibly because the development was passed to another development team. Big mistake! Microsoft killed tomb raider making the first game a timed exclusive. Never recovered after that.

They're all solid games, but nothing quite matched the epicness of the first one for me. I think the 3rd one started off strong but once you got to that Peruvian area it took a massive nose dive for me.

lelo2play879d ago (Edited 879d ago )

You got to be kidding!
The first one was great at the time... but this latest trilogy of Tomb Raider games are also great.

LiViNgLeGaCY879d ago

I think he means the first one in the new trilogy.

CrimsonWing69878d ago

I meant the first of the new trilogy.

Furesis878d ago

yeah i remember liking the first one when it came out, so i tried the second one sometime after release and i just could not get into it, i couldn't finish it. So i might try the 3rd now that i got it for free but ehh. But i do remember enjoying the first one, i wonder if i'd feel the same way if i played it today? Better not taint those memories lol

ANIALATOR136878d ago

I was the same for some reason. Never finished the second one. I got like half way through maybe.

ActualWhiteMan878d ago (Edited 878d ago )

The first one of the latest trilogy is a masterpiece

Fishy Fingers879d ago

I'll take a copy of Shadow... Cheers.

Profchaos879d ago

Great games I've played them all on ps4 but it'll be good to finally try shadow on my rtx card.

Double_O_Revan879d ago

Trying to claim them and the store keeps crashing. lol.

gamefreaks365879d ago

EGS has been having issues all day.

RedDevils879d ago

Weird I don't has that issue.

Double_O_Revan878d ago

I finally got it after a while. But it was real bad for a while.

PeeShuter878d ago (Edited 878d ago )

Claim games by going to the website and login using ur credentials. I did the same as i couldnt use epic launcher. Also try reinstalling Epic Launcher I did it and it worked.

Double_O_Revan878d ago

I always go through the website. It was all just down for a while yesterday it seems.
