Here's why we don't have a Driveclub VR review: it made everyone sick

You may have noticed, looking over the breadth of PlayStation VR coverage that we have, that we don't have a review for one of the headset's launch titles, Driveclub VR. Well, there's a reason for that, and that reason starts with "motion," ends with "sickness," and in the middle there's a "BLLLFRRRPPHH!!!"

Simply put, we just couldn't find anyone who could handle playing the game long enough to review it. We tried several victim--er, volunteers, but no luck.

That's not good, is the frame rate not stable?

GryestOfBluSkies2768d ago

its stable. i played a little bit and felt fine. its another game that varies by person

Ron_Danger2768d ago

Just ignore Moldy. He's been concern trolling every article that paints PSVR in a negative light.

Notice how he's absent from the comment section from this 8/10 scoring review for Drive Club VR.

I noticed, games that aren't as graphically advanced as others causes slight nausea problems. I wonder if there something with that. However, Driveclub isn't one of these games, but games like LUGE and that Odyssey game made me feel a little weird.

Kingthrash3602768d ago

Lol moldy, I can see the concern on your face...a genuine crooked smile.
As far as vr goes though this has been a well known fact of all vr. It's a hit or miss when it comes to high movement games...certain vr games may or may not get you sick. I say try it out at a best buy or try to tuff it out. Things like getting sick goes away after your body adjusts, it's jus a matter of getting through that part...on some games. If you can't and won't do that then skip it. Of you really want a vr experience then either hope you are one of those people who don't get sick or that can though through it.

Soapboxhero2768d ago

I only played through 1 race which barely constitutes enough playtime to form a full opinion on but I didn't have any issues with motion sickness, only real complaint is some of the graphics looks abnormally flat and objects in the distance were a bit murky. The only game I have played thus far that even hinted at motion sickness was the rollercoaster section of the Until Dawn: Blood rush demo on the demo disc (Yes i realize the whole game is on rails like a roller coaster but there is a segment of it that is particularly more aggressive)

fr0sty2768d ago (Edited 2768d ago )

These pansies probably get sick on their morning commute to work. I've logged hours in DCVR without even feeling a little sick. The only game I've played that caused even a little discomfort is Here They Lie, because it relies on a wiimote style turning system where you look to the edges of the screen in the direction you want your player to turn, and the game does not use head tracking while you are walking, which disorients you after a while.

morganfell2768d ago

Notice my post here:

http://n4g.com/news/1970621...

and Cupid Viper's remark above mine. It seems he is right. Two friends came over today and among the games they tried was Drive Club VR. I had them both stand at first with the controller. One was fine and he raced without incident. His girlfriend, not so much. So we put her behind the wheel after her stomach calmed and she was fine.

IanTH2767d ago (Edited 2767d ago )

I'm a person with a pretty decent tolerance for VR and low instances of motion sickness, but this game made me have a headache and was just generally uncomfortable to try and play. I stopped 3/4 of the way through a race because it was just uncomfortable and that made the race hard to do well in and it just wasn't fun for me. A lot of other games so far have been great, but this one definitely got me.

Side note: I was surprised at how much the visuals took a hit on this game. Some games look great, but it feels like the more realistic they try to go the more effects have to go into it and the more they have to sacrifice over more "cartoony" games. It's a general VR problem, not just PSVR, but it makes me think if I want to keep PSVR instead of going for a PC variant that I'd have to pony up for a Pro and that leaves me with a lot of questions. It's a solid device, but for those without PS4s, definitely wait for the Pro to get both - some patience and $100 will make a helluva lot of difference with your experience.

candystop2767d ago (Edited 2767d ago )

I've had a few games give me motion sickness while others didn't bother me at all on Gear. This is strange but also reminiscent of my first HD TV. I remember getting headaches thinking I would never get use to my tv but overtime my eyes adjusted. I've also heard that saying you were dizzy is contagious like yawning. What i want to see and think would be good are games filmed in our reality. Let us walk through the real world and eliminate cartoon pixel game worlds. Sure add computer graphics and effects but play in reality. I bet that would solve many issue. Back in the day games were done like this on laser disc but the idea has been forgotten I guess.

Death2767d ago

The graphics are disappointing after owning the original since launch. I don't think its enough to detract from the game though. What has my stomach churning is the jitters in the car from the way pov is tracked. You can hold the controller stationary and watch it jump around. I'm not sure why, but your body jumps around in the car as well as the car movement which feels abnormal.

This doesn't happen in all games, so I don't think its a hardware issue.

SonyWarrior2767d ago

the thing i dont like about driveclub vr is how some things are unusually blurry such as the instrument cluster in the cars and sometimes even the tablet thing thats in all the cars i am also thinking that this game might not be 1080p because its just not as clear as other games ive played so far

babadivad2767d ago

I think the issue is that the PSVR lets a little light in the bottom of the headset by design[so you won't be completely blind to the outside world]. The problem is that your eyes are drawn to light. That constant reminder that you aren't actually moving confusiones your brain and makes you sick.

It's something you can probably get used to but I can understand how it can easily make you sick in driving games and the downhill luge game. Basically any game with fast moving scenery.

MasterCornholio2768d ago (Edited 2767d ago )

I don't believe it's the framerate causing this.

@Todd

Is there a rule that states that everyone has to get sick when playing the game?

SniperControl2768d ago (Edited 2768d ago )

Been playing it most of today, not one feeling of sickness, my bro tried it earlier, no mention of sickness.

fr0sty2768d ago

It's biased reviewers causing it.

IamTylerDurden12768d ago

I Don't believe It's that widespread a problem. Now, I love Rigs and i play it now without getting sick, but at first I did feel a very slight dizzy feeling with one of the control options. My brother did as well, but after we got used to it we never felt it again. However, neither of us felt any uncomfortable feeling from Driveclub VR. It's funny how you hear nothing about sickness with certain games like Rigs, but it's all you hear about with DC VR. I honestly think Driveclub is being targeted. Even Playroom VR had more potential dizziness than Driveclub.

NXSwitch2767d ago

Lol the nerve of Sony knee blowers saying they have yet to feel the sickness, what do they all have gods eyes now? Wake up gamers, the game is a S in a can!

THRASHMOUTH2768d ago

I've put in a good 5 hours of it so far. Played about 2-3 hours non-stop and felt completely fine. The reviews flooding n4g are being scored low based on their motion sickness and it's sad... the game, even though it's not good looking, deserves much more credit than what it's being given.

morganfell2768d ago

I stopped noticing the actual resolution and such about 10 seconds into the race.

Loktai2767d ago

Def a game that .. hopefully assuming it takes advantage of it could use the help of ps4 pro... but it looks ok, the smoothness really make up for the kind of muddy graphics for me. I mean the graphics aren't bad bit if you're used to the raw beauty that is driveclub.... it's a major hit . OF course it runs at double the frame rate and dead smooth, so I'm not sure why we would expect anything else. I'll pick it up again when I get a ps4 pro and see how it looks.

Disclaimer : I don't own this game my friend has it and the psvr, but I did play half an hour with only a very slight feeling of nausea and I'm the sort of person who gets nauseous on short plane flights where the takeoff and landing are very close together (boston-nyc, boston-philly, ,nyc-norfolk, etc) and in the back seat of cars since I was a kid... so I don't think it's that severe or I'd have thrown up on my friends new carpet which may have ended our friendship through proxy of his wife's rage.

XanderZane2768d ago

Again?!?!?. This isn't the first reviewer who had this problem with this game. There have been several others.

ziggurcat2768d ago

... and there have been a bunch that haven't said anything about feeling ill. it's clearly specific to the individual, not the game.

Eonjay2768d ago

Its fine. Some people have issues with motion in VR. Others do not.

Death2767d ago

Its a little more than that. Driveclub is very jittery when you aren't physically moving. I'm hoping its something that can be addressed with an update. It simply doesn't track well.

morganfell2767d ago

Yes it does.

I have run it quite a bit. The issue isn't the game. Any video captured from the social screen, which is where the PS4 captures take their feed, appears jittery when in fact what the player sees in the headset, which is different than the social screen and capture, is quite steady. I noticed this when capturing video not only in Drive Club but in Batman VR and in Eve Valkyrie as well. While the social screen, and thus PS4 captures may show you what the user is looking at, the do not represent in a host of ways how the wearer views the game world. Anyone with a PSVR knows this.

SniperControl2768d ago

Oh moldy.... Here again with your touching concern for Playstation gamers......

dumahim2768d ago

Team VVV doesn't seem to have a problem. Maybe it's the fact he's using a wheel and gamesradar is using controller.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

THRASHMOUTH2768d ago

I've been using the controller, all has been well.

Loktai2767d ago (Edited 2767d ago )

I was ok with a controller, slight feeling of motion sickness after 30 min, but I'm a VR newbie and have a history of motion sickness ...

This will sound like a fan boy comment I understand that but-

People if you have a motion sickness issue don't disregard VR... it's worth the dramamine, at least to try it out and see If you can adapt. it's so different and the feeling of presence is like... unreal. I want to play every genera of game in this way, even if it's third person. it's so cool and I haven't felt this connected and immersed in a game since I was a kid sitting on the floor in front of a console TV without a care in the world. NOT just PSVR , but any VR deserves a chance. Psvr just happens to be the most accessible and in my opinion down the road will give the easiest way to know how your personal experience will be since the games run on identical hardware, where on PC your experience will vary a little more especially across headsets.

JUST my two cents!

SierraGuy2768d ago (Edited 2768d ago )

Not for the faint... PlayStation only...suck it up buttercup. Depends on the game.

IamTylerDurden12768d ago (Edited 2768d ago )

I played Driveclub VR and so did my brother and we did not feel sick at all. In fact, Rigs had more of a dizziness effect than DC VR. I absolutely love DC VR and I'm unsure why it's not getting great reviews.

Drithe2767d ago

What is happening is NERDS arent used to moving anything but their fingers. Since they have to move their head they are getting motion sickness.

Loktai2767d ago

I agree with the basics but even non nerds would not be used to this.. don't generalize people not everybody likes the term nerd. I repair servers and storage arrays for a living , have a bunch of nerdy hobbies like insects and breeding frogs and stuff but I don't like to be considered a nerd. .. I also repair my own cars (up to and including engine tear down and swap ... but I don't open auto transmissions outside the pan and replace the valves from underneath), do landscaping and so on... but I still get motion sick as a passenger in a car or on some airline flights. It's all personal.

Skillz12152767d ago (Edited 2767d ago )

hey moldy ---- you

NXSwitch2767d ago

No its that the game sucks balls, tits, & ass big time. A failed game trying to resell itself is not going to help VR. Its so easy to see this so why can't others, smh!

UCForce2767d ago

Well, I could say that true, but game like RIGS, REZ and Thumper are very good. And upcoming Farpoint going to prove it.

DigitalRaptor2767d ago (Edited 2767d ago )

LOL.

Well if it ain't the Sony concern professional himself.

I'm glad not to have been around so much recently with the influx of PSVR articles on here, because I would have to put up with your disingenuous nature and concern trolling, as others have pointed out. Like your friends, where are you when the positive articles come around?

There's nothing wrong with the frame rate. Almost every single pre-release preview and consumer impression of DriveClub VR praised it one way or another, so there's something up here, and it's probably not to do with the game itself. It's probably something to do with the fact that everyone is different and VR can give some people nausea while other people are completely fine.

Nero21422768d ago

Isn't this like normal motion sickness in car ? Can't you take medicine for this ?

Mulando2768d ago (Edited 2768d ago )

No, because in a care you are actually moving. This is just the normal simulator sickness.

But this game is one of those, the occulus makers warned about. If it isn't made good, many customers won't be interessted in VR anymore.
Seems like they invested more time in the demo (which the reviewers could play) than the final game.

ChristopherJack2767d ago

Often those sicknesses are placebos, you're only sick because you think you're going to be sick.

SierraGuy2768d ago

Agreed stop looking sideways and look forward...if u ask me it's realistic just like a real car.

Bigpappy2767d ago

Doesn't sound like you have ever driven a real car

Perjoss2768d ago

No, motion sickness you get from real cars and boats etc, VR sickness is actually called simulation sickness and its kind of the opposite as you don't get sick from the movements, you get sick because of the lack of movements. Your eyes tell your brain that you're moving around but your body and other senses aren't sending the same signals.

Loktai2767d ago (Edited 2767d ago )

Most motion sickness in cars and vr is from vision and the disconnect. .. that is why many people are OK if sleeping in the car or a planr. sea sickness is a little different though often is also made much worse by looking out onto the water vs just staying inside , that motion sickness IS different from VR and what most people get sick from in a car though for some just the start /stopping of a car upsets the stomach.

Loktai2767d ago

Yes it would help of course... anyone who says otherwise is wrong but what will help more is taking a break when you feel it and making sure the headset is on straight and calibrated ... it's going to be really subjective just like people who get carsick, some people get car sick in some people's cars and not others whIle which cars and drivers make them sick DOES vary by person.

This is not good.

Artemidorus2768d ago

Disagreeing with the facts, the millennial theory.

IamTylerDurden12768d ago

Not me. Got more sick from Playroom than DCVR. DCVR felt great to me.

snoopgg2768d ago

Yeah there are going to be certain people that are going to get sick, but not everyone is . Heck, my cousin gets sick just from fpshooters. Call of duty made him sick, and he would be someone that vr wouldn't be good for. Everyone won't get sick from vr.

Yohshida2768d ago

But but not everyone gets sick, so its not that bad right??? /s

UCForce2768d ago (Edited 2768d ago )

Ok, how about this ? This article has approved about twelve hours ago. Other articles was approved about 8 hours. By the way, I think people enjoy DriveClub VR, the only downside is the graphics been downgraded that because it need 60fps to play the game.

IamTylerDurden12768d ago (Edited 2768d ago )

Visuals are downgraded but the framerate is boosted. DCVR is so damn good, it forced my buddy who's the manager at Gamestop to get a PSVR. It's a shame that such a great game is being overshadowed by sickness propaganda. Every VR game has the potential to make someone sick, but a very small percentage actually get sick. I highly doubt DCVR has a much higher rate of sickness than any other VR game. It's not just heavy locomotion games, it can even be walking sims. Here They Lie made my brother sick in the beginning but Thumper and DCVR did not.

Red_Renegade2768d ago

not just not everybody. the vast majority don't get sick. what's your experience with it?

Yohshida2768d ago

According to reviewrs, alot get sick

UCForce2768d ago

This article based on individual person.

trooper_2768d ago

Oh wow, four articles based on opinion.

Doesn't mean VR is bad. Take your fake concerns elsewhere.

Yohshida2768d ago (Edited 2768d ago )

How many do you need? 10?
these are gaming sites reporting an issue with psvr

UCForce2768d ago (Edited 2767d ago )

Hmm ? Only four articles. So what ? More importantly, I read it on Twitter and other sites for example like EuroGamer, Push Square and other sites. It's minority, but not much. Look, I do understand VR caused people sick, but it's depend each person how they can handle.

Edit : http://thegg.net/reviews/pl...

Edit #2: @JasonKCK Yeah, I noticed that. But I think you should look at VVV YouTube Channel.

Red_Renegade2768d ago

i asked about you. did you get sick when you tried it? even if you did, why is it only right now that anybody at all is getting sick? people have been playing for months, so what changed?

2768d ago
Yohshida2767d ago

Whoa dmg control squad tries to defend everything. Even if it would kill 20% of all people you guys would be like " those arent all people using it"

UCForce2767d ago (Edited 2767d ago )

It's not damage control. What they said was right.

MasterCornholio2767d ago

Why would VR kill people in the first place?

I'm wondering if it's even possible because you seen to believe that it is.

UCForce2767d ago (Edited 2767d ago )

Even if it killed people, would you think video game can kill people too ? Before you guys get triggered by this, I'm not saying video game kill people, but for those who have a mental illness or playing video game too long like 2 or 4 days, it can hurt people health. Video game is for fun, but it's also your health to make sure is priority.

trooper_2767d ago (Edited 2767d ago )

Sure, whatever you say. The majority of the reviews HAVE been possible so keep dreaming.
