Kotaku: PlayStation VR is My Favourite VR

In decades to come, if 2016 isn’t remembered as the beginning of the collapse of western civilisation thanks to Brexit and Trump, it might be remembered as the year that virtual reality first came into our lives in a big way. Keza MAcDonald spent a lot of time with the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and most recently PlayStation VR this year, and she played plenty of games on all of them. So far, PlayStation VR is her favourite. As it turns out she had a rather different experience with it than Kirk, who wrote Kotaku's PSVR review - here’s why.

Having tried it, its just great. I want to see what else they can do with it.

Deadpooled2775d ago

VR fancy movie tech stuff eg like in Iron Man 2? VR Porn? VR watching a TV?

2774d ago
S2Killinit2774d ago (Edited 2774d ago )

Yeah agreed. Although i was talking in terms of gaming and also things like watching a soccer game live across the world as if you are there in the stadium, or attending an orchestra, or visiting a museum in paris in VR, educational/training purposes like simulating an audience where the player can learn to do public speaking, or face phobias. (you know future stuff)

FamilyGuy2774d ago

VR Touring sounds like a great idea.
I feel like I would want/need a fan blowing softly in my face during a lot of these VR experiences. Like it would help the immersion to some degree. All your ideas of things to do with vr tech sound great.

S2Killinit2774d ago

@FamilyGuy
Appreciate it.

Deadpooled2774d ago (Edited 2774d ago )

VR watching Real Madrid vs Barcelona at the Bernabeu/Nou Camp, VR World Cup Final etc wow what a fantastic idea and what a money maker that would be, pay for which seat you want the VR in (the closer the seat, the higher the price) and enjoy in the comfort of your own home! That would be awesome. Just need a way to implement it in arena seats without the cameras getting in the way of people at the event.

Other ideas - watch the Wimbledon final VR, watch F1 VR, watch WrestleMania VR (WWE already has some entrances on VR on their YouTube channel, imagine if this was already in place and being sat behind the commentators, and watching Shane O Mac jump off the Cell! (Plus watching Michael Cole *read* his reaction from a notepad)), take your own personal seat on the Masters at Augusta Georgia, watch the Super Bowl and the half time show. The possibilities of how it can be implemented are endless.

S2Killinit2774d ago

Exactely. I think VR will be big business because many businesses will benefit from it. People will pay for a ticket to watch El Classico to feel like they are there in the stadium. And there will be no limit on how many tickets you can sell.

UltraNova2774d ago

I just want an Everest climp experience...the whole way up prefarably!

Kotaku is simply looking for clicks. When game magazines in the 90s wanted to offer multiple opinions, they put multiple people on a single review and openly published differences in opinion. As a result, the reader got a much broader perspective to guide their purchase.

Instead, Kotaku first writes a mediocre Review to stir up dissent and rile up the Sony camp, and then they follow it up with a clickbait-y title like "PSVR is my favorite VR!" to rile up PC VR owners and to get clicks from the same Sony camp they annoyed in their Review.

What a joke of a "news" site. Playing both sides just for the sake of advertising clicks.

Sharky2312774d ago

Or maybe somebody had a different opinion from the review. I can't believe something like that could happen!

rainslacker2774d ago

Game magazines had one outlet to express said opinion, so they were kind of forced to do so. That's not really the case in the internet age.

Although, I do agree Kotaku reviews are mediocre at best, or at least they go off on the most ridiculous things to downvote a game.

fiveby92774d ago

I just never read Kotaku anymore. Not interested in clicking on their site to keep them in business.

mixelon2774d ago

Keza is from Kotaku UK which is an entirely different set of people, run by Future Publishing. They cross post articles between countries but they're notably different.

She has a different opinion to someone who works at Kotaku US.

In this case both sides are right anyway.. the review made good points and so did she..

deafdani2774d ago

This is Kotaku UK, a different site ran by different people with different opinions.

Bet you loved to jump on that Kotaku hate bandwagon, uh?

Genuine-User2775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

Keza moved to Kotaku? I'm glad she enjoyed her time with the PSVR.

I want one but I'll go with PS4 Pro this year and PSVR in 2017.

GrubsterBeater2775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

It's gonna be the other way around for me. I just don't have the money to spend on a 4K TV yet, and next year when the price goes down, I'll grab one along with PS4 Pro.

It just makes more sense to me financially and logically.

Regarding PS VR, it seems like the only real issues people are having is with the motion tracking sometimes (NOT EVRRYBODY), and I'm sure they can tweak that out and/or update or make new peripherals to eliminate that problem for the most part in the near future. I am getting one regardless though.

Ju2774d ago (Edited 2774d ago )

Got me a cheap 4K...$379 "refurbed" 55" - no HDR. But w/e. Still looks great in 1080p. Now I need 4K contents...but PSVR is tempting. Has to wait...but want it as soon as poosible.

Also, VR has the games I want. Byte size action for a quick 30 minutes or so - and in that regards I love me those space shooters. Incl. a CoD Dogfight battle in space. How amazing is that. Can't wait...I might go crazy and push my limits if my addiction kicks in before end of the year. I played Valkyrie, and, well, enough said. As soon as you get into the cockpit and start looking around you are sold...

Well, and ultimately, I want to try DC VR - but then I'll have to invest another couple of 100$ for a wheel...damn.

SmielmaN2775d ago

It was a good write up and comparison to the other VR units. There's a lot of good press so I'm a happy future customer.

ApocalypseShadow2775d ago

Looks like Sony can't be denied. It's been tested, it works and it's fun.

Best buy had better not mess up my preorder. Lol! I'm ready!

S2Killinit2775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

Got mine preordered at gamestop. Just make sure you show up or else they sell them to others. (In case of gamestop after a mere two days)

dp2774072774d ago (Edited 2774d ago )

Amazon cancelled my launch bundle PSVR a few days ago and I couldn't do anything with customer service even though they cancelled it on me for no reason plus it had already been paid for and they refunded me amazon credit[right]!!!
Anyways I emailed the CEO and actually got a response from one of his close people and she fixed it for me and gave me a hundred dollar credit Also I can prove it just ask me how. just cause they messed up big time one out of how ever many times that causes this to be rare doesn't mean you guys aren't dicks lol

spaceg0st2774d ago

Umm, they don't charge you until it ships. Nice story though

S2Killinit2774d ago (Edited 2774d ago )

Your story doesnt quite pan out. Amazon doesnt give store credit, they refund your money back. You sure it was amazon?

Mexxan2774d ago (Edited 2774d ago )

feel the need to be counted? To be heard? It's ok son, it's ok......

Alot of us have these notions -it's called imagination. Much better for you to understand that reality is,... well, it's something different.

love the authenticity seal of someone close to the CEO - aahhhh, cherry on top that is, very impressive..

LexHazard792774d ago

Dont make sense, they dont charge til they ship. Happy Prime subber here....

XanderZane2774d ago

They don't charge until after the product is released. So this can't be true. I have "World of Final Fantasy" pre-ordered on Amazon and they haven't charged me anything. I've had my Zelda 3DS XL pre-ordered cancelled on Best Buy and it was because they didn't have enough units to fill everyone's order. I wasn't charged anything though. I eventually got it from Gamestop anyways.

dp2774072774d ago

how do you guys want me to prove it

dp2774072774d ago

Also a lot of it didn't make any sense to them, the regular amazon service people couldn't even fix it or know why it"glitched" my order.

DarXyde2774d ago

Endorsements are always welcome, but it IS Kotaku. It seems everyone is willing to accept their approval now when, in other circumstances, they're readily written off with people calling for their blacklisting.

Just about any other site offering praise could be used and it'd be consistent with the general opinion on this site. Now, not so much because it's positive so here's the exception.

PSVR has gotten some good reception all around. It's safe to say it's going to be successful as long as the software keeps coming. But yeah, I think the people on this site need to be consistent: do you care about Kotaku's opinion, or don't you?

Brugal2774d ago

FYI I downvoted you by mistake. I meant to agree lol

rainslacker2774d ago (Edited 2774d ago )

I still don't accept their recommendations. Feel they aren't worth really taking too seriously overall.

Think it was you who the other day I even said that Kotaku isn't worth taking seriously on any recommendation ever.

The write up wasn't bad though when comparing it to other VR offerings, and for the most part, the write up does seem to be on par with what other people are saying.

deafdani2773d ago (Edited 2773d ago )

I care about Kotaku's opinion.

That said, this is Kotaku UK, not to be confused with the regular Kotaku site that everyone loves to hate and discredit, in most cases not even knowing why.

rainslacker2774d ago

So far some fairly high profile reviewers or "journalist" seem to think it's been pretty good. They all have some qualms, but nothing that makes them seem to want to not recommend it.

Overall, I feel the reviews have been pretty fair, and giving the actual information the customer should need when deciding if it's for them.

Maybe reviewers are getting past the point where they sabotaging new things just to drive some agenda, and might actually want to provide benefit to the readers, and not screw up the industry with their negativity. I dream of course, but just maybe....:)

There have been some mixed reviews but overall they are positive. Lets hope Sony can get this right, so far the best VR library is theirs.
They have roughly a year before Scorpio offers the VR support.

DeadlyOreo2775d ago

I don't think Sony are worried about Scorpio and a potential partnership with Oculus. Oculus is far more expensive, and they have fucked it lol.

Sony are in a league of their own in terms of VR. Can't wait, four days to go!

Amongunz2775d ago

The only people who think oculus fucked anything are internet people. I have one and everyone ive shown it to, man woman and child are blown away... its just too expensive and lacking that application that everyone can use.... all of the options out there serve a purpose at a particular price point though. Psvr will undoubtedly grow the market, which is good for everyone.... and fb will undoubtedly continue to contribute and grow the industry as well with their social networking expertise and vision.

ONESHOTV22774d ago

You are setting up your self for an argument Oreo. When you said Sony is in a league of their own you must be talking about the bottom of the league table because the psvr is nothing but a poor man's VR if you didn't know. And no before you think about it I'm a ps gamer just like but I'm just speaking the truth because it looks like others are scare to say any thing

kneon2774d ago

@Amongunz

Most people are blown away by gear VR so that doesn't really mean anything. In fact the general public tend to complain about the cables when I try to use oculus or vive for demos

XanderZane2774d ago

I can't wait either to see what the reactions will be like. I won't be getting one until late next year. I want my PS4 Pro first though. Not buying any hardware this year cause I can't afford it.

GrubsterBeater2775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

I really want them to make a VR compatible Mount & Blade game.

To me, that would be amazing. Hopefully some day they can make that or something comparable.

The future of VR is now, and the possibilities are endless. Expect VR as a platform to grow more and more, becoming more advanced, more precise, and better in general with experience and time.

Sony and it's VR need to wear sunglasses, because it's future is so bright.

TKCMuzzer2774d ago

Sony controls their own VR, meaning they can control the software and produce dedicated titles along with known IP's. All the other are reliant on 3rd parties to push the hardware.

Haru2774d ago

Oculus and vive are dead, if it wasn't for PSVR to keep the tech alive and strive forward the whole vr thing would've been dead already and forggoteen by everyone, leave it to Sony to take this technology inovate it and drive it forward just like the did with the first playstation if it wasn't for Sony gaming would've been dead.. well maybe not really but I for one know that I would've have never started playing games if there wasn't a Playstation :) Thanks Sony for keeping gaming alive! unlike other greedy companies who try to destroy it

Aenea2774d ago

Nonsense they aren't dead.

And now with Occulus using a re-projection like technique so PCs that can only do 45fps are also able to use it means that more people have a capable PC. Yes it's more expensive still, but if PSVR is becoming a hit, which it might, and non console gamers want to get into the VR action they will become more interested in Rift/Vive, more will be sold, prices will become lower, etc., etc.

I feel PSVR can help Rift/Vive and other way around.

mogwaii2774d ago

If scorpios vr solution is just the oculus then I'm not buying, ms need to come up with something even better than what's available now, if they did that it would be a major winner.

fllysurfer2774d ago

I don´t expect Microsoft to invest in their own VR tech, its more risk for them and I´m sure they don´t want to start from scratch when they can partner with FB that has Oculus.

Aenea2774d ago

They could help design a cheaper, more comfortable Rift that can use Kinect for motion controls. That way they might be able to bring it back to $400 and no initial need for the controllers...

LexHazard792774d ago

Ok but then you still have to buy Scorpio and a compatible unit. Ouch!

I can finally watch pron, I mean watch pronouns be pronounced in PC VR games that were previously not available on Playstation.
