Where Does the NX Fit In With PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio?

— Nintendo Enthusiast:

Nintendo may have been the first to drop the ‘new hardware’ bomb this year, but Sony and Microsoft have pretty much stolen the show with announcements of their own. We now know more about these two new systems than we know about Nintendo’s. We know that unlike past generations, we will now be getting upgrades to the existing consoles instead of entirely new systems. Meanwhile, Nintendo has been fairly reticent on the subject of the NX, except to describe it as a “new concept.” What does this mean, and where exactly does Nintendo’s mysterious new system fit into this whole situation?

It doesn't fit anywhere beside them. NX will be an entirely new platform while PS4 Pro and Project Scorpio are iterations of pre-existing platforms. A new platform and an iterative platform are two completely different things so there's no use comparing them.

So at the end of the day NX will be competing against PS4 & XO as a whole.

Maybay2761d ago

Not everyone will share your viewpoint though. They'll see the NX and say: "why would I buy Nintendo's new gaming platform if it's only $20-$40 dollars cheaper than the PS4 pro and the Xbox Scorpio?" Price will play a factor, and its innovate feature(s) will have to be on the same level as their Wii console. Third parties currently run this industry - and they (third parties) - always want a co-marketing type of deal. Nintendo doesn't believe in that sort of thing, so they'll always be considered as an afterthought. I believe they'll (Nintendo) pay for third party exclusives, which should benefit them in that sense.

Nintendo knows what needs to be done. It's on them how well they execute their strategy.

SourtreeDing2761d ago

the NX fits in with the 360 elite and PS3 super slim??

gbsrnctaln2761d ago

"Nintendo knows what needs to be done"

Um....no. Its painfully obvious that they have zero clue of what needs to be done.

Aenea2761d ago

"why would I buy Nintendo's new gaming platform if it's only $20-$40 dollars cheaper than the PS4 pro and the Xbox Scorpio?"

Because it offers totally different types of games?

freshslicepizza2761d ago

The Wii U never fit in either so I doubt NX will.

PSN_ZeroOnyx2760d ago

Actually, NX doesn't compete with PS4 Pro or Scorpio at all. When they realized the Wii U failed to compete with PS4 ana Scorpio they designed the NX to match the competition. Unfortunately the NX has taken too long to reach retail and the competition is upgrading their hardware. This ultimately means NX will be outshined again, though they still have great first party IP's and studios.

NXSwitch2760d ago (Edited 2760d ago )

Ya 3rd party run the show with their awful dlc crap. Nin don't need some or all of them. They can start over again with the indie dev's. Indie dev's are the same ball park to the well known 3rd parties we have seen from Sony when they first came aboard in the 90's. Sony brought unkown 3rd parties we never heard off & they made hit games. So Nin needs to continue investing in the indie groups big time.

Well known 3rd parties today just want free money thrown at them in order to put their games on the system that wants it. Nin ain't about to do that because they know those 3rd parties are greedy pigs & they will only invest in trusted companies.

I ain't worried at all about NX's low 3rd party count because I'm still going to support them just like we continue to support our fav teams that keep losing at sports, or clothen brand that doesn't take off, or the kind of car that is better at others ect. I can't wait until NX is show!

hopefully in your pocket! :)
I had a 3DS and a Vita. Had a DS before then and a GBA.

Having a portable never stopped me from buying a home console too (and PC!). If the NX can give decent performance on the go, then I'll probably buy it. It all depends on the content available at launch.

Nintendo can say whatever they want, but this new "Console" being portable IS a replacement for the 3DS. Gamers who didn't owned a handheld gaming device in last generation probably won't buy this one either.

Ju2761d ago

A lot of people bought the 3DS, though. And having a mobile device which you can play stationary is quite an intriguing idea, IMO.

indyman77772760d ago (Edited 2760d ago )

Logically looking at it though 3ds sold 59 million systems and ds sold over 150 million systems so that is over 200 million systems. Ps4 has sold 40 million and by most accounts xbox has sol 19-20 million. If the Nintendo NX is a replacement for only the hand helds like your assuming it is then by numbers Nintendo will have more fans to sell to. But what if it is both handheld and console, like it is hinted at? That is more to sell to, not less.

3DS sold over 59 million

DS sold over 154 million

superchiller2761d ago

Since Nintendo is unwilling to give any detailed information about the NX, there's really no point in speculating about where it fits in as far as console gaming hardware goes. Why write an article about this when there's no details to back it up? Slow day, nothing to write about? It would seem so.

TheCommentator2761d ago

On top of that, it's only supoosed to be a few weeks until the reveal.

NotoriousWhiz2761d ago

Is that confirmed or more speculation?

TheCommentator2761d ago

It's a rumor, but I can't see Nintendo waiting too much longer to reveal it.

AKR2761d ago

Because I felt like writing about it. Is that a problem? It's been well over a year and a half and nothing has changed, yet, there are dozens of articles per week about the NX. So really, complaining doesn't make any sense.

superchiller2761d ago

Of course you are free to write whatever you want. But when you have nothing new/useful/unique to say about the NX, don't expect a lot of people to click your links.

ShottyatLaw2761d ago

That made me chuckle. Good enough reason for me.

_-EDMIX-_2761d ago

@super- did you think there was no point to Consumers all talking about Microsoft supposed XBONE platform before its reveal? I believe all the outrage over the rumor of the DRM online only helped show that users are not interested in such a feature before reveal and I believe the outrage after reveal helped even more to have those policies reversed, I am sorry but they need consumers input even if it's just based on rumors because it's showing what the installed base is looking for.

If you don't see a point to it don't comment on the article it's a waste of your time if you feel that way but don't tell others what they should or shouldn't be discussing...

Mind you it's extremely unlikely that the rumors that have been leaked thus far are just all fake, no platform to my recollection has ever been revealed in complete silence.

rainslacker2760d ago

Fair enough, but you're trying to determine where it fits in with two currently non-existent consoles, with only one of which we have enough information on to really determine where it's place is to begin with.

Scorpio, we know enough to accertain within some reasonable degree of logic where it's place will be in comparison to the PS4P, both from the target specs, and MS brief mentions of where it would fit in with the PS4P.

OTOH, we have Nintendo, who have really only confirmed they had a new console coming, with no definitive information on it either through leaks or Nintendo themselves.

So, what are you actually trying to compare? Well, you're comparing 3 different products with different times to market, from 3 different companies all with different motivations, one with some concrete information and plenty said about it, one with a bit of information and a bunch of PR behind it, and 1 product which is a virtual unknowns in the grand scheme of things.

If you feel like writing about it, that's fine. Just don't get upset when people question why you'd bother at this point in time.

NXSwitch2760d ago

You know nothing about the NX & create clickbait news to feel alive & wanted. All you writers need help & next time bring something that is fact from the horses behind.

pcz2761d ago

the nx will fit perfectly in the bargain bin

sk8ofmnd2761d ago

It seems it will be only competing with the 3ds as its not looking like a dedicated console experience but a hybrid*.

ShottyatLaw2761d ago

I'm thinking of it as my next generation handheld. It will fit beside my other platforms just as well as my previous handhelds did in the past.

If it also has some video out/standard controller input, all the better.

_-EDMIX-_2761d ago

Completely agree based on how they've been doing on the market currently I believe this is the case. I actually predicted this several years ago that this company was likely go to leave dedicated consoles behind and only focus on handheld I just don't think there's enough room in the market for them to be spending a bunch of money on console, at least not exclusively dedicated I think it's best if they just have a feature that lets Gamers play it on their TV as some sort of consolation to their old console fans.

I just don't think many gamers will care about the graphics being from a handheld as I honestly don't think majority of Nintendo fans even care considering their handheld primarily out sell their consoles.

What made me believe a long time ago that they were going to go handheld and simply have a feature to play on the TV was a lack of a Gameboy player for the DS and also the PSP's ability to out to a TV with their 2000 and 3000 Series

It told me that if worst came to worst why couldn't Nintendo just do that? Not only would they have all their developers of focusing on one platform they would have the best of both worlds anyway and they could Market it as a hybrid despite it just being a handheld that could play on the TV I'm pretty positive so he was not out here calling the PSP a hybrid or console or anything of that sort.

But for Nintendo's marketability they need to definitely Market it as a hybrid until consumers it's both so that way they don't feel that they're leaving behind their console fans.

I mean Nintendo can't really sell it just by saying it's a handheld and you could play it on your TV (not really a breakthrough to new) they need to drive home that it is both even though most gamers are going to see through this and realize it's just a handheld they need to be able to Market it properly.

indyman77772760d ago (Edited 2760d ago )

It doesn't have to be a new idea. Have you tried playing NINTENDO's library of JRPG's on your TV? (that's where they all went to not consoles, they didn't disappear, only square disappeared on jrpg's).

I have seen people requesting to play those games on tv, pc, and can't (unless you know of the few modding sites that charge 200$ to add a tv out port to your 3ds). I know I would buy a hybrid to play just Braverly default (One or two). On my tv, I don't like handhelds I own (vita, ds, 3ds, psp and they gain dust)

The Wiiu store only has a few games that you can play on the actual console. And PSvita is doing good but the number of JRPG's are mostly only on Nintendo (DS or 3DS). I'm in, Don't get me wrong I want a Nintendo system with 8teraflops and a cloud of dust, but if it is only as strong as the original xbox one I will be in!

_-EDMIX-_2760d ago

@indy- I think if you prefer to play your games on the TV and all your handheld's overtime collect us and you prefer a console then their next platform if it is rumored to be a handout that outs to a TV will likely be just what you've been waiting for.

By the way I'm currently playing through Bravely Default the second time and it's an amazing game but I don't disagree with you I'd actually rather play it on my TV and I'm saddened that last generation they never released a DS player for the Wii no 3DS player for Wii U.

I'd rather just have their next platform have the ability to out to the TV and be done with it. They are already shoving all their support on handheld and mobile anyway they might as well Focus all their efforts on that and just give us the ability to play it on our TVs as an option

deafdani2761d ago

Without reading the article, my first answer: how the hell can we know, if we know almost nothing about Scorpio, and exactly nothing about NX?

superchiller2761d ago

Exactly. It's just meaningless conjecture at this point.

pcz2761d ago

incorrect. we have patents. and also numerous leaks from devs.

we practically know what the nx is, just not precise info on specs or appearance.

but we have a good idea.

when nintendo unveil it, there will be no surprise.

deafdani2760d ago (Edited 2760d ago )

Patents and leaks are not factual knowledge. Everything is still conjecture at this point.

Yes, it's VERY likely the NX is, in fact, an hybrid console, because that is the common thread in all the leaks.

But even that is still conjecture. We, for a fact, don't know jack shit about the NX, and that will remain the case until Nintendo actually tells us about the damn thing.

_-EDMIX-_2760d ago

@deaf- I mean I don't really want to be that guy, and I agree with you to a degree but you have to seriously think about this , no handheld or console in recent memory has ever been revealed in silence, I'm sorry but it just doesn't happen. the same people that are leaking the information regarding Nintendo's next platform also leaked the wii u, 3DS , Vita , Playstation 4 and Xbox One in the more recently with damn near perfect Precision leaked the information regarding the PlayStation 4 slim and the pro down to the exact specs even down to the exact design the same with Scorpio.

so it's like it's hard to seriously pretend that all those leaks or just nothing we all know that to a degree a large portion of them are probably correct and it is very probable that their exact.

I agree that we can't take all this information as fact but I also can't seriously pretend that it's nothing the likeliness is we've already read the majority of what their platform actually is I'm extremely doubtful that it's going to be anything other than what we've actually read...

Nintendo Is A Bad Company, But We Can't Help Loving Them Anyway

TG: “Most of us also grew up with Nintendo, likely forming a nostalgic connection with games that have long been crowned as our personal favourites. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker was an experience that shaped my view on open world fantasy, and Super Mario 64 changed my life like it did for millions of others. These titles have earned their place in history, and remain loved to this day for so many worthwhile reasons. We replay them and beg for remasters all while delving into their worlds time and time again because they mean that much to us. It’s a shame then that the company behind them often kicks its own sweet darlings to the curb.”

I never got the love for Nintendo games personally. The annoying vocalizations and ugly character designs do nothing for me.

Tapani334d ago (Edited 334d ago )

Another very weird article.

Nintendo is a great company by almost all possible normal measures. The biggest one being: their own staff is happy, and they seem to be very happy, well compensated and retain rate is solid. They are also financially very stable, profitable, and cash rich, so shareholders love them.

Overall it is an extremely creative group of people, and their mission statement is fantastic as well "to put smiles on the faces of everyone we touch. We do so by creating new surprises for people across the world to enjoy together." The social impact is also massive, not to speak culturally. Additionally, they have a really strong core business, high customer retention rate and loyalty. Nintendo's reputation is extremely good, I think in the US alone they are 9th most reputable company, their customer service is better than the average company. Plus, the press gives them a pass, because they are Nintendo. But there's a reason why they do that, it's not "because they are Nintendo", there are more layers to the argument.

Then, then there's the random negative gamers online...and their "reputation" which is inside their heads. And their western ideas of how a Japanese company should behave or what they should do. But they have no right to ask a company to do anything for them, because they can vote with their wallets.

There's a small vocal community online who dislikes Nintendo for what they are, but then again, there's always a small vocal community that dislikes something.

Nintendo also disagrees with the Western world about IP, but most people call Westerners "hidoi!" when they emulate Tears of the Kingdom and do not experience it the way Nintendo wanted them (even if it is not the best visual way), because it is a matter of principle to them (Japanese are very much against anything close to plagiarism, and there are laws that are tight about creative works copying etc.)

The Western Braveheart "freedoom!" shouters need to understand that it is not an American company, nor they need to behave like one. They can have their own fights based on their principles (against emulation). And they very well may lose the battle with that and change, or find a new audience.

In the end, it is so very simple. Don't buy the products if you don't like a company, but there's no need to paint a picture that is unrealistic about Nintendo either.

MadLad334d ago

I hate virtually everything about their business practices, actually. Suing everybody for virtually anything, shooting down fan projects, games they never let devalue, their online infrastructure and how they handle BC.

They're lucky they make great games, because that's the only thing I feel they do right.

gold_drake334d ago

my issue with them, is the complete refusal to have decent tech for us.

and their odd censorship and lawsuits for modders.
