I Played PlayStation VR for Over an Hour and Didn't Chunder

Push Square: "Until this week, my time with PlayStation VR had been very limited. The longest I'd probably spent strapped in to the headset in one session was maybe 15 minutes, so I hadn't really had an opportunity to test how it feels to play virtual reality in extended sittings. Luckily, I was invited up to Rebellion on Wednesday, where I spent over an hour playing Battlezone co-op in one go."

Good for you, you have great stamina and resistance to motion sickness and spacial disorientation.

kneon2781d ago

I think you'll find most gamers can do just as well. Certainly if you're used to FPS games then you will adapt quickly. Even most non-gamers get used to it pretty quickly.

uptownsoul2781d ago (Edited 2781d ago )

I know...I love how the OG comment ("Good for you, you have great stamina and resistance to motion sickness and spacial disorientation.") was to suggest that anybody who can play PSVR for an hour some how has the super human ability of composure. I tried PSVR at my local Best Buy uninterrupted for 30mins (trying all the available demos) & had no problems.

I even brought my wife back & she tried it for 20 or so mins uninterrupted as well. And aside from her being scared by the shark in that one demo & being startled every time she got shot at in EVE Valkyrie, she was perfectly fine too

rainslacker2781d ago (Edited 2781d ago )

@uptown

You and your wife must be Gods among men.

:)

For me, I got a bit lightheaded when first using VR at work, kind of like when you stand up too quickly. Never felt sick or anything. Worked my way through it in a couple days approaching it with some care and restraint. Most people there didn't have a problem, and no one said they were getting sick from it.

IcarusOne2781d ago

I think it depends on the game. I have a Vive and play for hours, but the other day I started Adrift and within five minutes I was feeling queesy.

Kingthrash3602781d ago

I remember the arguments back in the early ps360 days where there was a concern for seizures from flashing lights in games.....it turned out to be a major minority of people...hell we don't even hear about it anymore...
Not saying this is going to be the same.....but I think it's just overblown.

k2d2780d ago

What is with the anti VR fanboys?

Fatal-Aim2780d ago (Edited 2780d ago )

@ K2d

Microsoft doesn't have one because they didn't see VR coming and so those users are trying to downplay the experience due to that. Its also obvious that the people bashing it has never tried a VR headset of this magnitude if one at all.

It's generally no problem with normal, seated, cockpit based games with fixed optical reference points...It's just a problem if those are missing.

nitus102781d ago

At least people are reporting on existing early release equipment rather than equipment which does not exist yet and has about a year to go before potential release. The full commercial release of the PSVR won't be until October 13, 2016 which is less than two weeks away.

CrimsonWing692781d ago (Edited 2780d ago )

Y'know I liken this mentality to people and roller coasters. Just because some people toss their cookies after being on a roller coaster doesn't mean everyone will. Because there are reports of people puking after a ride does not mean roller coasters are going to be a flop. It's the same for PSVR, sure some people have motion sickness, but I'm pretty sure their R&D department has put it through testing and have a pretty good ratio on who can and can't handle it.

rainslacker2781d ago (Edited 2781d ago )

Yeah well, you know the media will blow it out of proportion if it becomes popular. They'll latch their claws and be negative about anything which draws attention, and pander to the people who don't like new and popular things with all sorts of tabloidesque nonsense. Pokemon go being a recent example of how isolated cases of idiocy can be made into epic travesties....although a bit different in terms of what's going to happen for VR.

I doubt it will actually hamper sales though, as it will just draw more attention to it.. It'll get the word out, and quite honestly, there are a lot of people who could be attracted to the idea of overcoming something that would make them sick and may not be the best thing for them, or gives them a thrill in some way....kind of like roller coasters.

IamTylerDurden12781d ago

Most ppl don't get sick when using PSVR, if they did then it wouldn't be a consumer product. It wouldn't be allowed on the market. I get bad motion sickness on boats, planes, and cars, but after playing Battlezone, VR Worlds, Eve Valkyrie, Headmaster, and Rigs i didn't feel an ounce of discomfort. It's so well designed, getting sick while using it is an aberration and it happens to a very small percentage of ppl.

Here They Lie is a PSVR launch title from Sony Santa Monica and it's a beautiful 1st person survival horror game ala P.T and Silent Hill.

XanderZane2781d ago

Yeah, I get motion sickness if I read in a moving car. I'm fine on planes and trains though. Certain FPS games will make me motion sickness and it's the same with certain VR games. It'll happen to a small % of gamers and only with certain games. Not really a big deal.

IamTylerDurden12780d ago

How is PSVR any different when it comes to motion sickness than Oculus? Oculus seems to be doing fine in that department.

Fatal-Aim2780d ago (Edited 2780d ago )

It has a higher fps for one. 120fps along with reprojection vs Rift capping out at 90fps. The PS4 Pro is also suppose to double this already high fps. So you're looking at a significantly higher frame rate to anything on the market.

Errorist762781d ago

Who needs booze if you have virtual reality?!

UltraNova2781d ago

Dude you always need booze, period.

zeuanimals2781d ago

I've used Gear VR while high and now I don't have a face because my Note 7 blew up.

VR. Not even once.

IamTylerDurden12781d ago (Edited 2781d ago )

Wednesday, October 12th, 11:59 pm i will be picking up my paid for PSVR preorder. I'm so hyped. Already preordered Rigs, Batman, Drivecub VR, Loading Human, and Battlezone physical. VR Worlds comes with.

Incredible launch lineup.

Rigs - AAA fps (Guerrilla)

Arkham VR - be the Batman (Rocksteady)

VR Worlds - the Wii Sports of VR (Sony London)

Drivecub VR - a new DC game in VR with new tracks, modes, trophies ect.

Battlezone - better than Eve Valkyrie (Rebellion)

Loading Human - 1st person sci fi adventure with AAA values

Eve Valkyrie - perhaps the biggest game to hit VR

Here They Lie - 1st person survival horror, similar to P.T./Silent Hill (Sony Santa Monica)

Eagle Flight - Ubisoft
Rez Infinite
Fated - Vikings meets Firewatch meets Brothers
Bound - Sony Santa Monica
Super Stardust - Housemarque
Thumper - Amplitude meets wipeout
Until Dawn RoB
Hatsune Miku

There are more, but these stood out. Headmaster was actually great in the demo, it's a launch title. Superhypercube, Tethered, Job Simulator, Wayward Sky (point n click), World War Toons (f2p fps), Gunjack, Harmonix Music VR, Playroom ect, Roller Coaster Dreams.

SonyWarrior2781d ago

I didnt know drive club vr was launch i thought it was november, now im excited under 2 weeks away

Taero2780d ago

Just fyi, loading human is $40 / game (4 hour experience) so it's going to be $160-$200 to play it all. Confirmed in tweet by devs. Totally bummed about it :(

Thefreeman0122781d ago

I do okay while drinking and playing VR pool for a while

WeAreLegion2780d ago

My friends drink and Vive at my house all the time. The only problem is that they sometimes run into the wall and risk breaking the headset/controllers. It's a lot of fun.

lastking952781d ago

A whole hour? Wow that's got to be a record!

MasterCornholio2781d ago

I believe it depends on the game and the gamer most of all.

I personally don't believe that Sony would release a device that would make everybody sick. If something like that happens they will face a huge lawsuit.

Sharky2312781d ago

I think being able to adjust the headset to fit your head will help a lot of people. From the early reports I read the people testing the headset said they weren't able to fit it to there head properly. Mainly because there was a line of people waiting behind them to try it.

zeuanimals2781d ago

They likely won't get sued even if people get sick or have an epileptic attack since they'll likely have a warning about it. Well, they might get sued if everybody gets sick but if it's just a few, then they'll be fine.

MasterCornholio2780d ago

Just like with the 3DS some people will get sick. But like you said not enough to warrant a law suit.

It's kind of like how some people get sick with 30FPS but others don't.

NeoGamer2322780d ago

There are disclaimers and warnings on all VR accessories. Just like there are disclaimers and warnings on video games for epileptic seizures and such.

Personally, I find some FPS games with lower frame rates give me motion sickness so I can see some people having problems with VR.

I do think the tech is perfectly fine. And there will be people that can use it for hours, some that can't use it as much, and then others that just find they can't use it at all. I think the media is making too big a deal about this as well. It is important to let people know that VR isn't something everyone can handle well, but it goes beyond public service announcements when it is constantly in the media over a period of the last year and a half.

mariopasta52d ago

I can finally watch pron, I mean watch pronouns be pronounced in PC VR games that were previously not available on Playstation.

crazyCoconuts52d ago

be careful not to sprain your... tongue pronouncing those pronouns

Profchaos52d ago

I'm excited for that to plus I can try fallout 4 VR always wanted to play that

crazyCoconuts52d ago

I was lucky and held off on 4 until I played it in VR. It really is pretty awesome - you'll love it.

DaReapa52d ago

The icing on the cake would be if Sony / Valve allow for a Steam Link app much like it is for the Quest 3. Likely wishful thinking, though.
