Lost Odyssey sales jump over 2,000% due to backward compatibility announcement

After the announcement of any popular game, sales seem to skyrocket when it goes backward compatible on Xbox One. Today, the same was witnessed by Lost Odyssey. Lost Odyssey tells a great story. After a meteor wipes out the majority of forces from the nations of Uhra and Khent, Kaim joins Seth and Jansen to investigate the Grand Staff at the behest of the council of Uhra. The story follows this premise and offers many twists and turns.

-Foxtrot2772d ago

Hopefully we can see a sequel. Shame it won't be multiplatform because this franchise deserves every sale it can get. Shame Hironobu Sakaguchi hatred for Ken Kutaragi got in the way last gen. I thought he would have calmed down after he left but nothing.

Concertoine2772d ago

Im guessing LO started development around 2005-06, which was a very awkward time for Japanese gaming. The PS3 adoption was slow and the system was difficult to develop for. But at the same time people knew the 360 wasn't going to see wide adoption in Japan.

Too bad it wasn't released later because you can see it had a lot of heart behind it.

bouzebbal2772d ago

i loved this game as well. One of the best JRPGs in the last 10 years and i somehow made it to like every single character in the game, even Gongora

never4get2772d ago

PS3 is retarded. PS3 singlehandedly retarded AAA JRPGs developments. So retarded, even PS4 PRO comes out sooner than FFXV. The next AAA JRPG probably coming after PS5 is out.

bouzebbal2770d ago

I won't tell you who is retarded here..
Dragon Quest Xl
Worlds of ff
Ninokuni 2

Say hi

Just to name 3

MADGameR2772d ago

100% agreed, it should be on PS4.

game4funz2772d ago

If you really want to play it. Buy an Xbox.

xMANB3ARP1G2772d ago

Sorry you xbox sucks this is one of a hand few of its good exclusive games get over it.

never4get2772d ago

Sorry, the Retarded(slow) PS3 Cell architecture ruins AAA JRPGs for all of us. Even PS4 PRO comes out sooner than FFXV.

candystop2772d ago

Then why not make every game multiplat from both consoles. Everyone complains about lack of exclusives so what kind silly decision would it be to follow your idea. Just buy an xbox or play it on pc

game4funz2772d ago

Of course it does. Just say people should buy an Xbox then to buy the game. Very simple.

I mean it's the reason given with all Playstation exclusives. Do those games not deserve all the sales they can get?

Very confusing comment.

ShowanW2772d ago (Edited 2772d ago )

???

this is MS ip... they own the game... they paid mistwalker studios to make the game

ZwVw2772d ago

You can't be serious. LO is Microsoft's ip, not Sakaguchi's. The game originally started development at MS' Japanese in-house studio, (along with Blue Dragon and Infinite Undisocovery) shortly after Phantom Dust was complete. Then development switched over to third party (Feelplus for LO and Artoon for BD) when MS decided they were shutting their studio down, rather canning the projects they had in early development completely.
Mistwalker/Sakaguchi was pretty much hired as a creative consultant on LO and BD. He had about as much involvement in the creation of LO and BD as Kojima did for MGR:R

freshslicepizza2772d ago

you want every xbox game to be multiplatform because you want to only play on the ps4, just like i want every game to come to the pc. but thats not gonna happen

Hotabang2771d ago

shame hes focusing on mobile, he made amends with square though which is a start i guess XD

S2Killinit2771d ago (Edited 2771d ago )

I love how they pretend the statistics are something amazing. The game is ages old, of course it shoots up by 2 million percent. If it was selling 1 copy per month and now it sells 200 copies, thats a 200% increase.

Zhipp2771d ago

I understand Playstation may be a no go, but I wish the game would come to PC. It's one of the games from the X360 that I wish I could have played. it also has one of the best soundtrack I have ever heard, and it's definitely one of Uematsu's best works.

This site is always misleading with these amazon sales. The sales didn't increase 2000% it's position on the amazon sales charts did and seeing how it was far at the bottom this doesn't really tell you anything.

http://arstechnica.com/gami...

PS3 sales once went up 641 000%. This is a click bait site for Xbox fanboys.

Death2772d ago

When Playstation sales are reported based on Amazon ranking, are those bogus too? Lost Odyssey moved from 5,757 to 208 which they are showing as a 2,667% increase in rank. Do you think this is an indication that demand for the game has gone up or down since it hit the b/c list? To me it looks like making the game playable on the Xbox One increased demand for it.

travestyj2772d ago (Edited 2772d ago )

Did you read the article? Yes amazon percentages should not be an indication of sales skyrocketing no matter what the product is. And yes of course sales increased but they did not "sky rocket" like this site would have you believe. That could have easily been 5 or 10 copies sold...

The bottom line is the article is false, sales did not increase 2000%. They are aware of this as well.

All this indicates is that it sold better than a bunch of other things that people haven't bought today.

Not sure what PS4 has to do with this but I am pretty sure sites don't have to make misleading and falls claims to trick people into thinking it is selling better than it is.

Death2772d ago

It indicated hitting the b/c list renewed interest in the game and had a positive impact on sales. We have no idea how many copies were sold, but we do know that if it wasn't b/c with the Xbox One the number would be zero.

travestyj2772d ago (Edited 2772d ago )

Except that isn't what the article is saying... They are saying sales sky rocketed and increased 2000% which is not true at all in any way. Not sure why you are defending them and trying to say they are saying something else. All this indicates is that a few people bought a game.

4Sh0w2772d ago (Edited 2772d ago )

It's a game site not a court of law, we all know how Amazon works, hell the site even posted the snapshot of the Amazon games list, showing that it jumped position from 5757 to 208 which is over 2000% rank increase rather than actual sales. That hardly demonstrates some elaborate plot to fool unsuspecting gamers. Terms like "skyrocket" are just typical overstating that we see in many headlines but again like I said the real news was BC positively influenced sales of an old game, which is in fact what the very first statement of the news says:

"After the announcement of any popular game, sales seem to skyrocket when it goes backward compatible on Xbox One".

-But oh well, no point in continuing this conversation we obviously see things very differently.

travestyj2772d ago (Edited 2772d ago )

Again they said sales increased 2000% and sales sky rocketed, both of which are lies and misleading. How about you take a couple minutes and actually read the article I posted instead of dancing around it and supporting ignorance. It isn't the first time this site has done it and it won't be the last time. People these days just eat up any bullshit that's fed to them.

And I guarantee you a lot of people think sales increased 2000% rather than advancing in amazons sales charts. Go read the comments from the Red Dead Redemption posted on N4G and come back to me.

2772d ago
its_JEFF2772d ago (Edited 2772d ago )

@Death let me ask you this... from the time it's sales shot up 2000%, how much do you think its sold? and if you were running a video game company do you think that's worth investing millions to develop a new game? Game launched in 2007/2008... IDK how much it's sold from 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016... but since it was placed on the b/c list sales have shot up 2000%!!!

What are you thinking? what was the figure it sold before the 2000% jump?

Death2772d ago

@Jeff,

I have no idea what it was selling prior to hitting the b/c list. I do know that there is much more interest now and gamers that missed it the first time have an opportunity to play it now. Isn't that the point of b/c? I think you and travesty are trying way too hard to spin this as being irrelevant. There is value to the back catalog of games from last gen. This is why we see both Microsoft and Sony finding ways to bring them to the current consoles.

its_JEFF2771d ago

@Death I don't think it's completely irrelevant, but I do think that you can't read into those numbers that much. The numbers are great, but it's gotta be taken into context. The game came out in 2007/2008 it couldn't not have been selling all that much in 2016... any amount of sales would move the % up. If a product was had sold 20 copies this year then in the course of a month it's sales shot up 2000% it only sold 20,000 copies! Yes, that's an increase in sales not demand. If LO stays at the #1 spot for a while and it's sales % keeps going at a steady rate, then you can say there's demand.

All i'm saying is that some ppl are reading into these numbers way too much. I agree, there is a value to having a back catalog of previous gen games. I believe it's a selling point, that feature only goes so far. It's a safety blanket, it's a good to have even if you don't need it or ever use it.

Utalkin2me2771d ago

First off the article is very mis leading and false. Secondly if you sell 0 copies and it jumps 2000%, thats really not a big jump to say the least. Thirdly why does even a a select few, like 2k even care.

4Sh0w2772d ago (Edited 2772d ago )

@travestyj

Why do you care so much??? Do you go to parties also just to tell the host "its not such a good party though". lol

You come into positive Xbox news talking about Xbox fanboys as if this is a flambait article with negativity directed at ps, it's mostly just fun news about an old game selling much better= which we all know can be attributed to the game going BC today for the Xbox One. We don't know exactly how many sold but it doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to know that it's only *5 gazillion percent because it was basically selling next to nothing before going BC(that's not the point)= *lol you act as if the actual #'s in this case matters, NO the point is BC can stimulate old games sales/interest...I just don't get why folks can't be happy for Xbox and gaming in general...instead it's always like, nah, nah, no good news for Xbox let's find something negative to say.

travestyj2772d ago (Edited 2772d ago )

I don't like false clickbait articles so I pointed it out. Not sure why it is such an issue and I even linked an article breaking down just how misleading it actually is. These clickbait sites are cancer, this one especially. It isn't "fun news" it is false news. Not sure if you looked at the "hottest" section at the top of the site but it's mostly positive clickbait Xbox news these days. Perhaps you like being lied to but a lot of people don't and in what world is providing accurate information to those being mislead a bad thing?

4Sh0w2772d ago (Edited 2772d ago )

@travestyj, these quotes say alot about you:

"These clickbait sites are cancer"

-Says the guy calling folks Xbox fanboys just because they are glad BC contributed to a old game having renewed sales. I think the bitterness you display is the real cancer.

"Not sure if you looked at the "hottest" section at the top of the site but it's mostly positive clickbait Xbox news these days."

-So what?...you dont have to read it you know?...Again do you go to parties and shout "this party sucks because you guys are having too much fun!"? *Notice how you call it POSITIVE clickbait Xbox news. -Does it hurt you that bad?

"Perhaps you like being lied to"

-lol, I don't even care about the numbers, hell I never bothered to go into their accuracy, it's not like we're talking about NPD data analyzing which console or games sold the most NO.. thats completely missing the point which is BC directly influenced game sales for a title that was previously selling virtually nothing.

Edit: Yep Sparta, and you're free to call folks out in positive ps news, just like I felt like pointing out that he just sounds like a bitter soldier fighting 'teh mythical console war. BTW, again who cares what the numbers actually are, aren't you just happy a old game is selling again, that bodes well for other BC games and *all Gamers love when a game sells well, right?

Sparta072772d ago (Edited 2772d ago )

Go to a Sony article then come back here and say the same thing.
Both sides do it, go cry else where. This is n4g where both sides act like fools.
But let's be honest how many copies of this game were they selling before? For all we know they could of only sold 50 copies.

travestyj2772d ago (Edited 2772d ago )

"Says the guy calling folks Xbox fanboys just because they are glad BC contributed to a old game having renewed sales. I think the bitterness you display is the real cancer."

Who did I call an Xbox fanboy?

"So what?...you dont have to read it you know?...Again do you go to parties and shout "this party sucks because you guys are having too much fun!"? *Notice how you call it POSITIVE clickbait Xbox news. -Does it hurt you that bad? "

I guess ignorance is bliss right? Guess we should all bullshit each other and circlejerk, that would make for a great world. This also has nothing to do with parties, it is an article with false information and lies that I pointed out. Still not sure why that upsets people, do people like being lied to this much that they will get worked up over defending lies? Sounds pretty ridiculous to anyone with some actual sense.

If someone tried to convince you 2+2=5 would you just agree with it and get mad with anyone that proves otherwise. Think about what you are putting so much effort into right now. The article I linked says it all.

"lol, I don't even care about the numbers, hell I never bothered to go into their accuracy, it's not like we're talking about NPD data analyzing which console or games sold the most NO.. thats completely missing the point which is BC directly influenced game sales for a title that was previously selling virtually nothing."

I have a feeling you don't do much reading at all or fact checking, not sure why you had to tell me that though. The point of the article isn't to make you think "BC directly influenced game sales for a title that was previously selling virtually nothing" it is to make you think sales "sky rocketed" and "Sales for the game jumped more than 2,000%" which is false as I just explained several times, I suggest you do some reading. If they wanted you to think "BC directly influenced game sales for a title that was previously selling virtually nothing" they would have said that, but they didn't.

The game was indeed selling "virtually nothing" and is now selling slightly more than other products that are selling "virtually nothing". That's about it. There's nothing wrong with being happy some people bought a video game from amazon, there is something wrong about lying to people through clickbait articles and ignorantly defending it. Really says a lot about your character as a person, please don't become an educator or a journalist.

Well clearly you clicked....

rainslacker2771d ago (Edited 2771d ago )

It's one of those stats that means nothing without knowing where it started. If it sold 10 copies a week before, then a 2000% increase would mean that for the week it sold 20K copies this week. Not a bad haul really, for an old game just sitting there only selling 10 copies a week, but stating stats like this makes it seem like it's boosted it's sales to be a top seller.

Although, in this case, you are right, it's more about the position of the game, and not the actual sales.

It's not a bad thing though. If publishers see there is demand for older games through BC, then the chance they'll enable games through BC becomes higher.

And who said JRPG doesn't matter, huh ? Yes, I know Lost Obyssey is very popular Xbox 360 game. But it show that Japan video game industry is very important as America Video Game industry.

SpeakTruthAlways2772d ago (Edited 2772d ago )

Of course JRPGs matter, it's one the best genre but if its a ps4 exclusive then it'll be downplayed, will be called niche etc. Funny how that works, next time an xbox fanboy downplays a ps4 JRPG or anime games, make sure to rub this article in his face.

@below

"Were all gamers period."

You should tell that to xbox fanboys who downplays ps4 animes games and JRPGs. They need some sense knocked into them.

DeadManMMX2772d ago

It is niche it's been niche for years. Hell it was niche when FF7 came out and millions of people bought the game based on the CG in the commercials and then went to play and quit after being bombarded with menus and the materia system. JRPG is not a growing genre it's been on a steep decline for years just like the Japanese game industry. It also hurts that the RPG element's have been placed in most action games. Another thing not all players are the same. You just say Xbox Fanboy's but more then likely like myself a lot of people in this thread have more then one or maybe all of the systems. You guys running around yelling fanboy every few seconds can't seem to grasp that. Were all gamers period.

game4funz2772d ago

Wow. You seriously believe it's the Xbox fanboys that downplay anime looking games???

Have you asked your average American what they think about anime?

I'm gonna guess you haven't. Feel free pointing the finger at some imaginary enemy.

rainslacker2771d ago

@game

Have you asked the average american what they think about games?

We're not talking about average americans, we're talking about games.

But, anime itself has been gaining in popularity for a while now.

I don't believe all Xbox fans downplay anime games, but I know quite a few of them do, sometimes based on them being anime games.

The reason why most don't sell as well as western based games is likely more due to the marketing of the game than anything else. Japanese ports tend to get the most cursory of marketing, however, the occasional one which has big marketing campaigns can indeed sell well. However, I don't see Xbox fans often going on about anime games, while PS fans often can look forward to them quite a bit.

JRPG's are a market. Some markets like FPS or Action games are bigger. That doesn't make JRPG's niche. Just the number of high profile JRPG's has dwindled, so interest in them has declined.

DeadManMMX2772d ago (Edited 2772d ago )

They definitely matter but they have had an obvious sharp decline in popularity over the last decade and a half due to their repetitive nature. For the most part they have become a niche. There will always be those of us who love them. I used to play every RPG I could get my hands on on the PSX but after awhile they became cookie cutter too many spiky haired heroes and secret princesses. Edge Maverick was a sign of things to come. The franchise that lead the pack lost it's magic when the Square met the Enix and it's been downhill from there. Persona is the best thing to happen to JRPG's in forever. We will see what the new Final Fantasy brings but I guarantee it will have more western based game design elements. Without evolution this genre is destined to grow smaller and smaller each generation. When those of us who owned SNES's, PSX's and PS2's die out things will really look bleak.

DevilOgreFish2772d ago

I would definitely support the purchase just to see a sequel. good stories should never get left behind in the shadows.

DevilOgreFish2771d ago (Edited 2771d ago )

28 disagrees?! well It's a good game regardless. i picked up a copy for only $10.

jholden32492771d ago

Idiots.

This site is overrun with childish fanboys. That's all they do. Live, breathe, die as fanatics.

Will literally downvote you simply because the game is on Xbox. That's the only reason. And I'll get down votes for calling out that nonsense. Bring it. Doesn't make it any less true.

FITgamer2772d ago (Edited 2772d ago )

Considering it's previous Amazon rank was #6,255 and it only went up to #233 it likely went from 3-5 copies a day to 60-100? lol I hate these "__________ sales increased __%" articles. They are click bait to make sales seem more impressive than they really are.

Lost Odyssey Is Still One Of The Best Xbox RPGs Ever

17 years later, it still stands out.

I liked blue dragon more. Lost odyssey is the shit though.

jznrpg78d ago

Two of the few games I still own for Xbox360 . I have Magna Carta 2 , Last Remnant but also have the PS4 version so I may have got rid of it and I have the DS version of Blue Dragon. I think and a few others but I forget what they are since I don’t dust them off. that’s about it.

shinoff218378d ago (Edited 78d ago )

Another one I still havent got to try is infinite undiscovery. I read it was pretty linear but I usually fk with tri ace(star oceans are great).

Really my only issue with lost odyssey was the level cap they hit you with throughout the game. I enjoy just relaxing and doing some grinding every once in awhile. Could've atleast given the option. Other then that. Excellent game.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The 360 imo had atleast half or more that Gen of being the better jrpg system. I bought one earlier then I normally would have for some, and Alan wake. Japanese devs really got in their feelings that Gen and dropped the ball(thanks Phil phish, cocky ass ign, etc)

darthv7277d ago

You'd be better off playing Lost Odyssey on an XBO or Series X as no disc swapping and it looks and plays much better. Same with Blue Dragon. I still keep my 360 hooked up for games not on the bc list. for everything else, I use the series x now. Just last night I installed arkham origins as there is no 8th gen version like asylum/city.

I love having bc on xbox one/series hardware.

shinoff218377d ago

Darth

When I bought the the Xbox one off a couple worker. That was the first thing indid. Bought blue dragon and lost odyssey. Been waiting to catch infinite undiscovery on sale but I forget to check.

I used to own the 360 versions but I bought these digital. I'd like to track down the 360 ones again but no huge deal. I was actually playing through lost odyssey waiting for starfield to drop.

RaidenBlack77d ago

Is Lost Odyssey coming to PS, too?

cthulhucultist78d ago

The game was indeed amazing. Great characters, gameplay and story!

But the dream sequences penned by Shigematsu were sublime.

I still remember many of these stories and I have integrated in the past in my D&D campaign many years ago.

RpgSama78d ago

I'm not going to lie, I cried on more than on a couple of them

Dabigsiebowski78d ago

Microsoft should have just kept pumping money into these guys. Same with a lot of the other studios... the blundered hard.

Lost Odysee deserved a franchise even though development wasn't smooth

Michiel198978d ago

Am I the only one who doesn't wanna see every good game get sequel after sequel? It was a great game, but sometimes it's better to just make a one off and then create a new universe. Sadly that costs a lot more money and publishers don't wanna risk it, but I would definitely prefer it

shinoff218378d ago

I'm fine with sequels in jrpgs, even in the vain of ff sequels, all new stories and characters. It does get old in other genres though sometimes. For the most part I just game by game basis it all.

FinalFantasyFanatic78d ago

They could have done it like Final Fantasy, kept the title name and just start with a new world/characters, it's not like the creator isn't familar with that.

Concertoine78d ago

Idk, Japan never bit for Xbox despite their best efforts around this era. Mistwalker never exploded either, despite future partnerships with Nintendo whichhad a much better chance at success

BrainSyphoned78d ago

It's not like it has had any competition since 2007. Would really like to own the short stories from it in book form.

PapaBop77d ago

360 had some amazing JRPGs in it's early days, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia off the top of my head were all amazing games.

jznrpg78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

The problem with most MS games on 360 was they didn’t make the games they paid for them and that makes you less money in the long run and isn’t something you can continue to do especially with declining sales of consoles. MS should have been starting and growing studios from the beginning but they went for paid games and it leaves them without the knowledge and culture of making games.

shinoff218378d ago

Good points. Never thought of that like that back then.

Sgt_Slaughter77d ago

Not to mention killing the Japanese market that had all sorts of crazy and fun releases up until 2009-2010. They could have gained momentum on Nintendo and kept that going into the Xbox One era, but decided to "unify" efforts and that all but ended their presents in the country. Now, PS4's outsell the Xbox Series S three years into the new system's life cycle, and the 2/3DS at one point was doing the same.

Fifteen years on, Lost Odyssey is a perfect swansong for the formula Hironobu Sakaguchi perfected

It’s quite hard to believe, but Lost Odyssey turns fifteen years old today. A curious product of the time, it has arguably only got better with age - and not just because of what it is, but also what it represents.

andy85513d ago

Jeez doesn't seem 15 years. Very fond memories of this

FortWaba513d ago

The short stories that Kaim collects/remembers are truly emotional. I remember one in particular made my eyes water.

If you've never played this, try to hunt down an original copy, or emulate it. This game was a gem.

GoodGuy09513d ago

I wish there was a remaster. This and Last Story. Sad these games were released on the...wrong platforms...

kingnick512d ago

Considering all the early tech issues Unreal Engine 3 had combined with Japanese developers working with a foreign language engine Lost Odyssey on the PS3 would have been a tech disaster if it had used UE3.

Lost Odyssey's long load times and framerate drops are evidence of just how hard it was working with early builds of UE3, it's a miracle Lost Odyssey turned out as well as it did.

In a perfect world Lost Odyssey would have launched on the PS3 but I doubt Sony or anyone else would have funded the project if Microsoft didn't.
