While Pokemon has better sales and is more renowned, Shin Megami Tensei is Pokemon for adults. It has superior gameplay and more depth.

The SMT series is great. Wish it was more popular.

guywazeldatatt2800d ago

Because of its mature nature it's not going to reach those kinds of heights. Also, fighting God? that always gets you into trouble in the West...

though it seems to be a thing in japan.

TheSuperiorGamer2800d ago

Every Japanese rpg in a nutshell

Kyosuke_Sanada2800d ago

It's not simply fighting God. Shin Megami Tensei has many twists and turns revolving around three paths Law, Chaos and Neutral. My favourite thing about the series is that everything is revealed about each side, including pros and cons, so it never feels that there is a good or bad ending just a decision. Iloved earlier SMT titles because they almost felt horror themed and SMT IV Apocalypse looks to bring back alot of the the elements that were cast to the wayside due to Persona's popularity which is good.

Segata2800d ago

I love SMT but every JRPG you fight god

Kyosuke_Sanada2800d ago (Edited 2800d ago )

@Segata and Superior Gamer

There is some truth that you do fight against a god or some godlike of that particular world but never in an RPG has it been directly aimed at the Hebrew rendition (which is usually avoided to prevent controversy) and "God" isn't necessarily the only final boss because who is at the end depends on your decisions. Besides there are many gods that can be in your employ ranging from Christian to Greek. The game feels more like a clash of Eastern and Western theologies with humans being caught in the middle rather than you standard run of the mill RPG.

Princess_Pilfer2799d ago (Edited 2799d ago )

Tell that to final fantasy. Sephiroth is named after a concept in christian mythology, kefka decends from the heavens after you beat numerous forms of him that are christian symbols, Yevon is literally a malevolent god, In 9 you fight the god of death.

No, the reason it's not reaching any great heights is because it's generally mature. And not Game of Thrones porn-meets-final destination via Lord of the Rings "mature" or Deadpool "mature," it deals with serious and difficult adult themes which will quite deliberatly clash (at one point or another) with a persons sensabilities and personal beliefs (especially if it's allowed them to make a choice based on those things) and force them to confront some ugly truths about them, and people don't tend to like that.

SMT is one of my favorites. Persona is good but I like the series proper better. Definitely like it better than Pokemon now that I've grown up, but both are great. Excited to start SMT IV Apocalypse.

wonderfulmonkeyman2800d ago

"but both are great."
Exactly, thank you.

guywazeldatatt2800d ago

smt gives you a more grown up experience, but Pokémon is still for adults; it's like a Disney film. Or Star Wars. It's for everyone

guywithazeldatattoo2800d ago

SMT came first. by a while. so really Pokemon is SMT for kids.

guywazeldatatt2800d ago

this is true but I think that the idea is SMT is not nearly as popular. SMT is better though.

scottypops2800d ago

I'd agree. The hype has pretty much died down. No one I know is still playing.

guywazeldatatt2800d ago

@scottypops Pokemon GO is pretty much dead.

wonderfulmonkeyman2800d ago (Edited 2800d ago )

The release of GO caused an upswing in sales for the series, and Nintendo's handhelds, and GO's popularity has been swinging up and down, but has never truly dropped low enough to say it's flopped. And it keeps seeing increases with each new country it releases in.
The series is not forgotten, overrated, or dead.
It's fine if you like one series over the other, but posts like that one just cause unneeded trouble.

wonderfulmonkeyman2800d ago (Edited 2800d ago )

" It has superior gameplay and more depth."
No, it has different gameplay, and, at best, comparable depth.
Both are series that adult gamers can, and frequently do, enjoy; to chalk up Pokèmon as merely a kids game, is an opinion formed in deep ignorance of just how deep the EV training and other factors have become in Pokemon in recent years.
It's not much different, in how incorrect it is, than calling Pokèmon a kids game based solely upon the art styles used.

SMT is a great series, but this article's header sounds less like a serious attempt at evaluating either series, and more like an attempt at stirring up controversy between the two groups.
Something that has been happening FAR too often on this site, in the wake of the NX's upcoming release, to be mere coincidence.

guywazeldatatt2800d ago

Well if you want to be technical Pokémon is smt for kids. I think the point is that smt is just mature but Pokémon is for everyone

goldwyncq2800d ago

Or Pokemon is just Pokemon. The two series have virtually no similarity at all besides having creatures as allies.

Red_Renegade2800d ago

c'mon, man. just admit pokemon is aimed at kids. yes, adults can enjoy it. they can also enjoy sesame street. but adults aren't the target of either of those. don't get all upset cuz you like pokemon and it's for kids. just accept it's for kids and you still like it. nothing wrong with that.

wonderfulmonkeyman2800d ago (Edited 2800d ago )

It's nice to hear that you view it that way, but come on, man.
You know what this site is like and how it treats Nintendo games lately.
This article isn't going to be taken in the way you meant it, by most of the people around here.
It'll be treated as a derogatory term by the people around here who can't accept that kids exist in large numbers on even "mature" games these days.
This article is just blatantly flame-baiting by saying SMT has "superior gameplay and more depth", when the former is a matter of opinion and the latter is just untrue.
Calling Pokèmon "for kids" is used as an ironically immature insult on this site, and apparently on the site this article originates from as well.

You can say it's aimed at kids if you like, but surveys point towards the majority of the Nintendo fanbase being in their late teens to mid adult years.
And if the age of the crowds walking around playing Pokè-GO are any indication, that's true outside of Nintendo's handheld entries too.
Most Pokèmon fans aren't children anymore, so it isn't really fair to say it's aimed at kids.
It's not aimed at an age group; it's aimed at Pokèmon fans period.

Segata2800d ago

Digimon Cyber Sleuth is the kids SMT game

guywazeldatatt2800d ago

Pokémon is somewhere in there lol

Segata2799d ago

I'm talking specific structure dungeon design presentation and such. Sleuth is pretty much an exact mimic.

Fortunately for Nintendo, the legal team is separate from Game Freak’s development team.

NotoriousWhiz120d ago

Unfortunately for us, as their legal team seems to be more competent than Game Freak's development team.

gold_drake121d ago (Edited 121d ago )

they do tho .. IF there is something to sue for. IP infringement is such a delicate thing.

but absolutely agree on the change

GoodGuy09121d ago

That, have longer dev time, and absolutely get rid of Nintendo as the exclusive platform. Imagine a AAA pkmn game on current consoles or next generation.

But money, they'll make billions with little effort.

badz149121d ago

you know that's never gonna happen

FinalFantasyFanatic120d ago

Gamer Freak, Creatures and Nintendo all have a stake in the Pokemon franchise, Nintendo especially will never let them go, I don't know how Creatures or Game Freak feels about it. Plus, the other two don't have a financial incentive to ditch Nintendo, they make mega bucks regardless. Although I think Nintendo should help Game Freak out more since they're clearly struggling, other they'll all just have to accept longer dev times and bigger gaps between games, or maybe just make some cheaper low-tier games in-between.

shinoff2183121d ago

Idk yall. I'd take a Pokémon jrpg over a Pokémon with guns, online play etc. Plus wasn't Pokémon mobile pretty fking big like 4 years ago then covid hit.

--Onilink--121d ago (Edited 121d ago )

Even Scarlet/Violet had sold 24million as of early November (and undoubtedly sold even more during the Holidays), its not like they are currently suffering.

Yes, there are plenty of things I would like Gamefreak to do better, and yes I happened to like Palworld, but not because its a Pokemon clone, because its not, but because its a good survival game, something that I have zero interest for the mainline Pokemon games to become.

Most publications keep bringing up these topic ls just for clicks, because clearly the game is your typical survival game (most who do well on PC) with some Pokemon sprinkled in and not a Pokemon competitor, the core gameplay loop is clearly just Ark with dinosaurs swapped for Pokemon like creatures

And again, while I’m enjoying the game itself, I hope it doesnt set a new precedent for what we expect from game devs these days because, based on their other games, this developer really seems to basically just try to go as close as possible to ripping off other games without getting into trouble and then not really following up on those projects as promised (Craftopia players seem particularly angry).

I doubt they ever expected the discourse around this game to reach this level of popularity to push those insane sales numbers, and they actually take the opportunity to increase the quality of their work

FinalFantasyFanatic120d ago (Edited 120d ago )

I'm going to say something somewhat controversial, the last set of Pokemon games weren't that bad, it wasn't a great game, but a good game if we ignore the performance issues (and I personally didn't have many bugs).

They just need more interesting towns and NPCs (give them interesting dialogue, there's literally no reasons to talk to NPCs), interesting areas/locations (like the sunken ship and Bellsprout Tower), and some decent side quest, there isn't really any interesting side quests in those games, and fix the barely there lore for the game (Idk even know what was going on with those 4 "legendary Pokemon"). And maybe add less new Pokemon into the next game so they can transition more of the older Pokemon into 3D.

I think Scarlet/Violet had the potential to go from a good game to a great game if they implemented most of those ideas, but they also needed more development time to optimise the game as well.

Profchaos120d ago

Yeah agree id take a remake of red in the style of the links awakening remake any day of the week

Profchaos120d ago

No they don't I don't want any of the gameplay anywhere near Pokemon the only link between them is the idea of Pokemon except there's guns you enslave humans and Pokemon and there's a survival aspect.

Pokemon is fairly family friendly can't see Nintendo going ok let's give them m16s and slaughter each other
