Vampires, bats, whips, spells, castles…what’s the first thing that comes to mind when hearing these words? Elder Scrolls maybe? Twilight perhaps? Of course not! As Halloween approaches and things get spookier, it’s time to take a look at one of the most iconic gaming franchises of all time: Castlevania. A series that has been alive since 1986 is bound to have a wide array of titles, and Castlevania is no exception. While it isn’t quite as big as it was during the NES/SNES era, there are still plenty of quality titles that deserve to be played by any and all game aficionados.

Vampire games are making a comeback of late, and gamers hoping this is a new trend should look back at the 7 best vampire games ever made.
What is a list? A miserable little pile of scribbles.
A Best Vampire Game list and no Bloodborne. A bold choice, indeed.
No Blood Omen? Even today it's one of my favourite vampire games. We could really do with a release on modern platforms.
I really enjoyed Vampyr. The combat is a little clunky and could use some work. However, the story, characters, dialog. setting, and pretty much everything else in the game is great.
Inspiration is a big part of the game industry, but if a game is inspired by another does it cheapen the experience? CGM's Jordan Biordi tries to examine the concept.
I'm a big fan of Dawn of Sorrow too - I'm not sure I can decide between it and Aria, though. The bosses in Dawn of Sorrow are better, especially with the boss rush at the end. The story's a little more streamlined and neat in Aria, while Dawn just seems like it's trying to justify its own existence. And the stupid draw-a-glyph thing was definitely the long arm of Nintendo going MAKE USE OF THE TOUCHSCREEN and it was way out of place, although I did love the ice-destroying touch mechanic later on.
I got to take SoTN at number 1.
I have only played dawn of sorrow and lord of shadow, loved those games.
Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclessia deserve to be on that list before the Wii game. The Wii game is just a short, budget-priced diversion. If you wanted to include a game like that, Castlevania Chronicles is a better choice, IMHO.
Also, as always, I get saddened to see no love for Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness. Those two games are VASTLY underappreciated.
If Konam still had any interest in making games and/or making consumers happy we could hope they'd remake the GBA and NDS Castlevania games at some point, since there are people like me who aren't interested in gaming on handheld consoles and would like to enjoy these games with a proper audiovisual presentation, but since they have clearly given the middle finger to everyone including H. Kojima, I think we all have at least a vague idea of the odds on them ever coming up with that...
