5 Things To Do With Your No Man’s Sky Refund

The flurry of people who bought No Man’s Sky via Amazon, PSN, and Steam have been attempting to refund their purchase of the game—even with some putting over 50 hours into its procedurally generated worlds.  Normally, with every other game, there’s no way in hell that something like this would ever be in the consumer’s favor.

If you played more than 5 hour, they should of not given you a refund

Rimeskeem2837d ago

I played the game for around 20 hours until I found out what happens when you get to center or do the atlas things. Since then I haven't played a minute of it. Do I deserve a refund or nah?

I already contacted Sony and they wouldn't give it to me because I had a 65% trophy completion and had streamed the game not knowing that both those cause a "no refund possible".

shadowforks2837d ago

No, you don't deserve a refund because a game didn't live up to your expectations.

IamTylerDurden12837d ago

If u play a game for 20hrs u damn well better not get a refund. U hated the game so much u played it for 20hrs...

fr0sty2836d ago

A movie theater isn't going to refund your ticket because you thought the ending sucked. Get over yourself.

IxWoodstockxI2837d ago

5hrs is not that much the game is suppose to be 80hrs long.

UnHoly_One2837d ago

Totally agreed. I'm disappointed that people are even TRYING to get a refund after that long.

I've never tried to get a refund on a game in my life, and I've bought some real turds over the years. It's just the way it goes. You win some, you lose some.

It's funny how this game worked out from the initial reveal to post release.

I was vocally confused by it back in the early days, with my question being "what do you do in the game if there are no missions or quests?". I thought the tech was a spectacular idea, but I wasn't sure if there would be enough to it to make me actually want to keep playing beyond the initial wow factor.

I got railed for having this opinion. I was just a jealous Xbox fanboy, and that is why I wasn't excited for the game, of course. What other reason could there be?

Then the game came out. Lots of the people that had previous thought it was going to be the best game ever were saying "It's a grindfest, there is nothing to do. You just get resources so that you can get more resources, etc..."

I read all the negative articles, and I read how the game turned out to be pretty much what I thought it was going to be all along.

And then I did something crazy. I decided I needed to try it myself.

So I bought it a few days ago. And you know what? I am absolutely loving it. lol

It's exactly what everyone says it is. It's about shooting rocks and harvesting resources, so you can upgrade your gear and hold more resources, harvest them faster, and build better upgrades so you can harvest better, etc, etc, etc...

But it's just neat. I like how the universe is all one big open area and how I can fly from any planet to another planet all in one continuous flight, then look up in the sky and see the waypoints I left behind on the planet I just left. Or look out the window of a space station, and know that all I have to do is fly out the ship and turn to the right and I'll be landing on that planet in a minute or two.

I just plain enjoy playing the game. I enjoy seeing the weird creatures, reading the weird interactions with the aliens, and feeling what it might feel like to really walk alone on an alien planet.

It's just weird. Two years ago, I thought the game was a neat idea but wouldn't be fun to play, then the game came out, everyone else turned on it, and I picked it up knowing full well that it was exactly the thing I wasn't too excited about. And I love it. I can't stop playing it.

thejigisup2836d ago

I once went to a restaurant, ordered a burrito, the burrito was terrible. This burrito was so damn awful i couldnt finish the last bite of its 1 and a half pounds of chicken, cheese, rice, beans, sour cream(there was supposed to be guac, roasted peppers, corn, pico de gallo and a side of chips-none of which was there) so i told the waitress i wanted my money back because i wasn't paying for it!

subtenko2836d ago

Good post dude. Not only that but sean said they were planning updates to the game. Sounds like it could pull a minecraft (as in minecraft received updates and its evolved from when it first came out)

I hope they keep up to that promise because thats what got me. I do love exploring too.

gangsta_red2837d ago

Really? You'll spend at least 5 hours just doing the repetitive rock collecting grind alone.

Besides I am sure people played well over 5 hours just hoping to find that one out of 18 quinzillion planets would be as exciting or different as shown in all the Hello Games media demos.

IamTylerDurden12837d ago

The planets are exactly like they were in the demos from Sean. Maybe ur confused and instead are thinking of the trailer where the rhino bursts in.

gangsta_red2837d ago

Not confused at all Tyler, Sean only demoed a few planets and all if not most of all of them were nothing like what people are uploading now.

Even in one of the many montages of the "Sean Lied" videos, even a journalist asks Sean why he continues to show off the same planet during media events.

SwagginMcdoodles2836d ago

Well I played for more then 2 hours and got my refund, and I don't regret doing it. Liked it, but it got boring. And if Sony handing out refunds, fuck I look like not trying to get my money back lol. Saw an opportunity and I took it. So call me a bad guy, at least I got my money back for a game that didn't do it for me.

I feel so bad for that dude. Seems like a nice guy but the internet destroyed him.

IxWoodstockxI2837d ago

He destroyed himself. Don't feel sorry for a con artist

opinionated2837d ago

I disagree. I think Sony destroyed him by making the game 60 dollars. I don't think the people dumb enough to pay more than 30 deserve a refund either. He's just the PR guy of a 15 man studio. He got showered with hype and it got the best of him, it could happen to anyone in that situation. The torch mob trying to turn him into the next molyneux are ignorant of the way shit works.

FunAndGun2837d ago

I do feel bad for him as well....but, it really is his own fault. He made statements from his own mouth that were not true. Sony didn't make him say those things. He had many chances to correct the misconceptions created.

It definitely will be a lesson learned the hard way for him. While I was never really interested in the game myself, I did admire his passion for his work.

opinionated2836d ago (Edited 2836d ago )

I don't think it's what he said, it's what he didn't say. People would ask questions and he would skirt around the edges not really giving an answer. Then the media ran that as confirmation. I think the only thing he said that could justify the disappointment was saying that you could see other players but it would be really difficult and when was that said? Year before release? Shit changes. That's why rockstar won't show anybody what they are working on. "False ads" criers.

I'm no special pleader for NMS btw. I just think the anger towards him is unjustified. People need to blame themselves. You and I knew exactly what it was so we didn't buy.

JamesBroski2836d ago

I do think what he said was supposed to be in-game, but as developing a video game is not as easy as making up a D&D story, he probably had to remove a few things. It happens to even triple A studios. Just look at reveal gameplay trailer compared to the finished product of every game and most of the time they won't look alike.

His biggest mistake was to not come clear on the multiplayer. We still don't know if it's a server issue (really unlikely now) or it was just removed from the game. Telling the community that they ran into difficulties with the mp portion of the game and that it was either abandoned or pushed back would have been well received by their fans (or at least better than what's happening now). And if the game was released in "alpha" or "early access" with a more modest price, I think it would have been a hit.

Artemus2836d ago

He is this generation's Peter Molyneux.

SmokingMonkey2837d ago

Use your refund on a game genre that has been spammed over and over instead of using it on something new!

"But it's all about the journey"

- Mass Effect 3 ending defenders 2012

deafdani2837d ago

Sarcasm aside, that quote happens to be true. More so regarding No Man's Sky, because it's not a story driven game, so to expect some kind of spectacular narrative in the ending or something like that is ridiculous.

sizeofyou2837d ago

Do you get a refund for walking out of a cinema after 10 mins of a 160 minute film because it's already boring to you? The trailer looked good...
Do you get a refund for getting off a train after 10 mins of a 160 minute journey citing that you had to stand but you really wanted a seat? The advert showed seats on the trains...

This refund business is a joke.
Pays your money, based on homework - and makes your choice. And we're all unlucky from time to time.

Due to circumstances, I've only put in about 8 hours of play (no crashes) and there are aspects I'm disappointed with BUT I've bought far worse. And I will return to it when I'm able.
Joe Danger kept me and the kids going for hours and personally I want HG to think of other innovative games they can release.

Lets just say that all the sequels we regurgitate on an annual basis are often iterations and some happily fork out $60 for something with same broken engine and mechanics as the previous year, which probably took a fraction of the development hours of NMS, regardless of the size of team involved.

Gamers...we're an odd mix...

No Man's Sky Adrift Expedition Trailer

Introducing..No Man's Sky: Adrift.A lot has changed in the years since No Man’s Sky released.

No Man's Sky Is Easily One Of Gaming's Greatest Comeback Stories

Despite No Man Sky's rocky launch, Hello Games managed to turn it into one of the best space exploration RPGs out there.

darksky31d ago

HG could have stopped after making 3-4 updates and the debt would have been paid to those why are crying about paying full price. However, they have continously provided free updates for the last 6-7 years. No other developer in hostory has ever done this and probably never will.
There are many AAA games that disappointed but the devs normally move on or close the studio rather than fix the game.

-Foxtrot31d ago

I hate the whole concept of "comeback story" because at the end of the day it doesn't remove the core issue we had in the first place, that we were lied to, it was disappointing and it launched with bare content to what was promised for years.

Any bad game can have a comeback story if it's supported enough after launch but for me if you launch in a terrible state then you had your chance. I can applaud you for what you've done after but at the end of the day there's not much of a choice since most gamers would blank your next product if you ditched your last game so fast, it's not about repairing the game but spending your time repairing gamers trust before you launch your next product otherwise it would be dead on arrival.

With these stories and the games being updated, the only way is up most of the time so of course it's going to improve the game and feel better over all, getting better and better as time passes. No Mans Sky, Sea of Thieves, Fallout 76 etc but then you have games like Anthem, Suicide Squad, Redfall and The Avengers where the devs just clearly moved on, now if they have another product people won't be as exited for it, I mean hell Guardians of the Galaxy was a great game but because of the Avengers it didn't help its sales since people were obviously still sour at that point.

I still think despite the improvements to games like No Mans Sky and Cyberpunk along with being better now overall the games are still not up there to what was promised and hyped as for years.

If we keep celebrating these “comeback stories” then unfortunately it only strongly supports the concept that these studios / publishers can continue to push half arsed broken products out for the sake of quick sales instead of waiting until they are fully finished. We need to condemn this awful behaviour or sadly we lose all voice and power as consumers.

Sonic188131d ago (Edited 31d ago )

I feel the same way about Cyberpunk 2077. I'm glad you mentioned that. I'm not a fan of comeback stories as well. But No man sky developer was a small indie team compared to CDPR. It's worse when it's coming from a AAA developer

Nacho_Z31d ago

"Any bad game can have a comeback story if it's supported enough after launch"

You make it sound so simple and easy. It's not. After release Hello Games poured countless hours into getting their game closer to what they originally wanted, without charging a penny to anyone. That's not normal.

The reason NMS and HG are held in such high esteem and calling them liars is a weak stance is the amount of work they've put into it, for free. They're not chasing a quick buck, they've dedicated their lives over the last few years to giving their fans the game everyone wanted.

-Foxtrot31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

They are liars though...

We are not revising history here, I'm sorry but we're not

They built this game up for years and they launched it knowing full well it wasn't up to scratch to what they originally showed off or hyped it up to be.

"They're not chasing a quick buck, they've dedicated their lives over the last few years to giving their fans the game everyone wanted"

And like I said above most of that comes from the fact that if they had just moved on straight away nobody would have supported their next game. They've washed most of that sour taste away after supporting No Mans Sky so now they are doing a new game which more people feel like they can support and get excited for.

Anyway how can you say "You make it sound so simple and easy. It's not" and then make the point that "Hello Games poured countless hours into getting their game closer to what they originally wanted, without charging a penny to anyone"

This means that if a small team like this can turn a game around then big AAA games like Suicide Squad, Redfall, Anthem and the like should have been able to do it no problem, oh but that's right they didn't want to put the time or effort into it. They can do it but some people just decide not to.

Blad3runner0031d ago (Edited 31d ago )

"You make it sound so simple and easy. It's not. After release Hello Games poured countless hours into getting their game closer to what they originally wanted, without charging a penny to anyone. That's not normal."

People paid for the game at launch and got lied to. Now the game is what it SHOULD have been from the start (what people paid for) and we should be happy they aren't charging EXTRA? Its free because people ALREADY paid for the game at launch.

People PAID for what the game is in its current state (what it should have been at launch), not what it was when it released. Charging people AGAIN would result in even more backlash.

anast31d ago

"You make it sound so simple and easy. It's not. After release Hello Games poured countless hours into getting their game closer to what they originally wanted, without charging a penny to anyone. That's not normal."

They already charged for the full price game. All of that work is owed because it was already paid for.

JackBNimble31d ago

Fox ... sure HG made a huge mistake, but they have also done more then any development team that I have seen to fix the problem and go way beyond in supporting the game. And every update has been free, so I don't really get why you are holding on to this grudge.

milohighclub31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

Whatever happened at launch is in the past. By your logic they could have supported it for a year got it to the project they promised then stopped but they didn't. They're still supporting it to this they, they've released more content post than pretty much any game I can think off. More than most MMOs. They didn't have to go this far but they have and don't have any plans of stopping. All for free too.
Yeah they had a shit launch and they've apologised, learned and more than made up for it. I was pissed off at them at launch, but not petty enough to keep slandering them 7 years later.
You have much bigger studios releasing half assed games and fixing it later or even worse not even bothering.

anast31d ago

The DLC costs money. But yeah, people are hanging on to this one longer because of their previous reputation.

TheCaptainKuchiki31d ago

And it doesn't change the fact that the game is a boring procedurally generated environment in which your repeat the same actions over and over again with no real purpose. I hate when they say that the game became good.

thorstein31d ago

I really enjoyed it at launch and had every trophy by August 2016.

The experience I had is no longer in the game: It was just me and my ship. It was a survival game and the feeling of loneliness in the universe was pervasive. There was no way to ruin too far from your ship and, in an emergency, you grenaded a hole in the ground to survive.

I miss that aspect, but since then, I love what they've done.

Hugodastrevas31d ago

I'd say it's THE definitive comeback story

TheGamingHounds31d ago

Final Fantasy 14 takes that one imho

CrimsonWing6931d ago (Edited 31d ago )

Yep and the way they actually did it where Bahamut destroyed the original FF14 and the realm was “reborn” seals it as the best way to do something like this, lol.

Oh great another story about the cleanest shirt in a bin of dirty laundry.
