Has Nintendo Formed a Powerful New Alliance?

Nvidia won't be pursuing a new Shield tablet. I believe it has plans to conquer the world with Nintendo, instead.

Some people believe Nintendo will go with DMP's M3000 chip (which makes sense because it'll allow backward compatibility with 3DS titles). I'd love Nintendo to go with Nvidia, though it doesn't look likely.

You never know, so here's to hoping this article is spot on about the N using Nvid cards.

freshslicepizza2805d ago

microsoft went with nvidia before and it wasn't beneficial in the end and also complicated matters for backwards compatablity on the xbox 360. but typical nintendo wants to be different. let's just hope they go with a standard system where it is easy to port games.

FreeSpeech692805d ago (Edited 2803d ago )

tbh Xbox 360 WOULD never have had Native BC with original Xbox due to the high cost, so bad logic. This is a completely different situation. Nvidia Tegra chips could easily allow for backwards compatiblity with 3DS/DS due to how Arm Chips are made. If 360 used X86 like the Original Xbox same could be done regardless of whether it was ATI (AMD now) or Nvidia.
Edit @Moldybread "Native BC" meaning the games runs within physical hardware and not emulation. I actually love the BC that the 360 had (And Xbox One had now) I'm just saying it had nothing to do with royalties, but more so that they would have to put a Original Xbox chip in the console (Like Sony originally did with the PS3 before they took it out to cut costs).

freshslicepizza2805d ago

@FreeSpeech
"tbh Xbox 360 WOULD never have had Native BC with original Xbox due to the high cost, so bad logic."

bad logic? it's called emulation and paying nvidia royalties, they stiill got bc on the xbox 360 but not full bc.

"This is a completely different situation. Nvidia Tegra chips could easily allow for backwards compatiblity with 3DS/DS due to how Arm Chips are made. If 360 used X86 like the Original Xbox same could be done regardless of whether it was ATI (AMD now) or Nvidia."

we will see.

Kokyu2805d ago

Hahahahaha Nintendo go standard and easy port hahahahahaha

indysurfn2804d ago (Edited 2804d ago )

The problem was Microsoft did not build into their contract price steps so that the price would go down as they reached manufacturing numbers(for instance 2,000,000 would have the price drop just a little, and then drop again at 5 million and again at 10 million and so on.) So obviously Nintendo will make sure they don't forget to make that part of their contract. That was well published and so long ago I'm sure Nintendo got the memo.

I can't WAIT for Nintendo to launch, I can finally play games like Braverly default (one and two) and many other true turn based JRPG's on a big screen(that is why the handhelds sold so many because all the jrpg's went to handhelds).

freshslicepizza2804d ago

@Venomous
"Is that why the first xbox was so kick ass? Came out in 2001 and could do 720/1080i. The graphics to this day is still enjoyable. Way ahead of its time. Sign me up!"

it was kick ass but never reached its potential because of ther ps2 dominance. it also lost microsoft a lot of money because they had to sell it for a loss to try and compete. nintendo is not likely to sell the nx for a loss and nvidia do not offer as affordable pricing as amd. which means we can expect another underpowered system from nintendo because they don't want to sell a $500 system.

Th3o2804d ago

It's not about Nvidia or not. It's about the fact that Nintendo was using powerPC before.

3Ds uses ARM and so does Nvidia for their mobile chips.

I am alright with Nintendo succeeding.
But part of me doesn't want Nvidia to succeed EVEN more than they already are and become more arrogant.

Lets see.

noksucow732804d ago

I hear you there. I've always preferred amd.

_-EDMIX-_2804d ago

"But part of me doesn't want Nvidia to succeed" lol

Keep your emotions out of business talk. Thats just......irrelevant. If Nintendo does will, Nvidia will still be around...I mean...even if they fail....Nvidia will still be around. Folks don't buy things based on "arrogant" or humble etc, they are seeking a solution to a problem and want a product, over all...it matters not. I mean...besides AMD, who else would you be buying GPU's from?

Angeljuice2804d ago

Nintendo are notoriously cheapskates, Nvidia are notoriously money hungry, I don't think it would last long.

Concertoine2804d ago

Nvidia does need a path back into the console business though, this could be their opportunity since Sony and MS are clearly sticking with the Neo and Scorpio for a while

mochachino2805d ago

Nintendo should makes alliances with 3rd party support. That would impress me most when considering a Nintendo console.

FlyingFoxy2805d ago

Well if it is a handheld hybrid, the good thing is that all developers will be working on one machine instead of 2, meaning first party games should release at a steady pace at least.

Of course 3rd party support would be welcomed, this is why I hope that if it is a hybrid console Nintendo will decide to go with the new Tegra X2 chip.

jmc88882804d ago

That's a fallacy. Why do people really think that makes a difference? You are blurring the lines. How is that good for console gamers?

Games are still going to be of their respective type. Games will be catered around handheld type gaming and console type games. They are specific genres designed around how they are used.

Handheld game makers are going to continue making the games they make, and put it on the NX.

Nintendo will still be making the requisite Mario/Zelda/console IP type games.

So nothing is changing, except you'll have access to both. The fact is though, for console gamers, the handheld games will hold very little appeal. Maybe Pokemon, but that's about it. Other than that, how many people really want both?

Do people honestly think that if you give Nintendo Console enthusiasts access to their handheld games, that will make up for the lack of AAA 3rd party support? It won't. It will barely move the needle.

So what good is a 'steady pace', if much of that steady pace consists of games that console gamers don't want? Access does not equal desire.

Nintendo console enthusiasts have always known of Nintendo's handhelds. If they wanted them, they'd already be in that ecosystem. So forcing console only people into it, isn't going to add much, because they've already decided for the most part, they don't want it. Of course an exception here or there, but this is really pretty much nothing to these people. It does not make console people want to buy a NX more.

The people who previously bought both Nintendo handheld and console will love this. It saves them money.

The people who only bought Nintendo consoles... it won't matter. It's not like as a Wii U owner, I said... wow I wish I could play that DS game. I didn't. Most didn't.

It's not like when I had a NES or SNES that I said, boy I wish I could play Gameboy games on my NES or SNES.

So to console gamers, they aren't going to see an increase in games THEY ACTUALLY WANT. Console gamers will see roughly the same amount of 1st party console games as we got on the Wii U. That is not what people have been complaining about for years. They want a large library with variety around the types of games they like. The NX, if rumors are true, are basically confirming via their focus, that you won't be getting that. That larger library is only larger because it added games they don't want. How does this help?

jmc88882804d ago

So why would console gamers buy another Wii U? Because it has Nintendo games, I get it. But people are tired of buying a box that can only play Nintendo games. So expect millions of people who bought a Wii U, to not buy a NX. Nintendo is abandoning something they could easily compete for.

Meanwhile Nintendo loses sales because the people that previously wanted both Nintendo handheld and console, bought both handheld and console, and now they would only have to buy one device. That's less sales for Nintendo.

So console gamers are getting another Wii U.

Handheld users get access to Wii U level games by buying less Nintendo devices, which isn't good for Nintendo. They are only able to do this because NIntendo was so far behind to begin with tech wise, that now their full fledged games can be on handhelds.

Rather than pick things up a notch, and get support from 3rd parties, they decided to double down on what people lamented, all in a handheld, and call it a console. It looks like they've given up on modern gaming and all western AAA 3rd party support.

They are sacrificing sales, and alienating console customers (which results in more sacrificed sales).

Now, could there be something not in the rumors that change things, perhaps. But I doubt it. I don't believe that patent will effect the NX, and even if it did, why would I pay extra to the point it likely costs as much or more than a real console? Why would I want to spend $199 and then have to spend another 200-300 buying devices to up the power, and it likely still would be underpowered.

It's simple. Console gamers, who enjoy NIntendo, just wanted a regular console that could have NIntendo IP's PLUS AAA Western Dev games that is the bulk of what people play. Nintendo CAN EASILY compete with Sony and Microsoft. EASILY. But people have convinced themselves they CAN'T, because Nintendo itself hasn't tried for a few generations.

Not trying, doesn't mean not able to. It means NOT WILLING TO. Nintendo could get the CoD/Battlefield gamer, as well as the RPG gamer, as well as the Sports gamer, as well as the young gamer, and Nintendo IP gamer. A Nintendo console with power that 3rd party devs can get behind, can appeal to the largest swath of gamers, surpassing Sony and MS. That doesn't mean they'd beat them, but they can easily be competitive, because they have more market segments they can tap.

jmc88882804d ago

Exactly.

Imagine the cry if Microsoft made a surface tablet with an HDMI port and said that was the new Xbox. Because that's basically what Nintendo is doing.

Yet some Nintendo fans think they're going to be getting Western dev ports on the NX of AAA games.

Segata2805d ago

Well with Monster Hunter on Nintendo handhelds and DQXII confirmed for NX they already have a good lock on Japan.

fanboysmackdown2805d ago

Sounds like a pretty solid theory.

kneon2804d ago (Edited 2804d ago )

There is a simpler theory, the shield sales sucked and that's why they aren't making a new one.

The market for high end portable gaming is minuscule, few people will bother, they will just play something on their phone or tablet.

fanboysmackdown2804d ago

I don't really care what your theories or anyone else's are. This author came up with some creative thoughts on what might be in the NX. Do I want an NX with such crappy capabilities???, no. I won't waste my money on another Nintendo console if they keep coming up with more gimmicks. I'm only saying the author brought up some great points which may.....or may not be right so, here's a simple theory, go play your shitty phone or tablet games.

jmc88882804d ago (Edited 2804d ago )

Not really. Tegra isn't a viable modern gaming line. It's for handhelds, that can manage to run Nintendo console type games because Nintendo console type games are like 10 years behind the times.

Shield sales did suck, and Nvidia decided that they could sell more tegra chips by letting Nintendo make Nintendo games to move devices that contain the tegra line better then simply selling a shield.

For Nintendo it allows them to utilize their backwards-ness as a supposed competitive advantage, because they can put their high quality games with 10-15 year old tech behind it on a handheld, put an hdmi port on it, and somehow call it a console.

EddieNX 2804d ago

10 years behind the times? Some Wiiu games look good enough to be on Xbox one. Some Wiiu games actually look prettier than certain Xbox one games and I know cus I own both.

Nintendo does more with less

fanboysmackdown2804d ago

Again another knowitall who doesn't read into what others may be trying to convey.

Sy_Wolf2805d ago

nVidia has a long history of screwing over Sony and Microsoft. If Nintendo does go with nVidia I hope the same thing doesn't happen to them.

ZeekQuattro2805d ago

Problem is Nvidia recently told investors they are focusing on cars and A.I. which would certainly be a business reason to drop its next gaming platform as the last one never took off. Nvidia is moving on to what it believes is greener pastures in self driving vehicles so unless Nintendo is jumping into the automotive industry I kinda doubt it. lo l

Fist4achin2805d ago

I don't know why Nintendo would go with cars. The Japanese guy showed up at the Olympics by traveling through the pipe disguised as Mario... that's a much faster route.

ZeekQuattro2805d ago

Lol. Sorry I missed it. I gave up trying to find vids on it as every one I find turns out to be a picture show inside.

wheresmymonkey2804d ago

Good point - Maybe Nintendo are teaming up with Elon Musk on his tube powered transit system.

wheresmymonkey2804d ago

Maybe they licensed the tech they were going to use in the Shield 2 to Nintendo. It's not the first time Ninty have bought tech off someone else for a console. The tech that powered the N64 was originally offered to SEGA.

jmc88882804d ago

That's what it sounds like. It basically sounds like a Shield 2 that Nintendo designed and will have Nintendo IP's, and Nintendo is stupidly calling it a console. It's not.

It makes sense from Nvidia's point of view, because they get Nintendo's name to basically sell the guts of the Shield. This will be good if you are into handhelds, crappy if you wanted a competent console. If anything it should dishearten you because it shows they are abandoning all hope of a competent console and are saying, we're going handheld, but we'll throw you a bone since we can easily add a HDMI port, and since the Wii U was so underpowered, this new handheld can actually match or beat that so we can technically make the same style of Wii U games, but don't expect releases of console games to be faster than what came out on Wii U.

Microsoft’s Surface and Xbox hardware revenues take a big hit in Q3

Microsoft just posted the third quarter of its 2024 fiscal financial results. The software maker made $61.9 billion in revenue and a net income of $21.9 billion during Q3. Revenue is up 17 percent, and net income has increased by 20 percent.

Xbox content + services up 62% while hardware down 31%... seems about right with the way they tout you don't need the hardware to play. People can play on their phones or smart tv or other means. I don't hardly play on my consoles directly since getting devices like the logitech g-cloud and ps portal. Which is to also say I have been playing more digital than physical because of these devices.

solideagle3d ago

you should apply in MS PR team buddy, I think you will do a great job in my humble opinion :)

I thought darthv72 and Obscure_Observer already work for Microsoft 🤔

Lightning773d ago

What he said was facts. How he plays games is no concern of you. Don't get too mad about it.

Cacabunga3d ago

I can tell people like you are an absolute minority..

If service is up means their fans and fanboys accepted this model and subscribed to it. The near future you will see a big decline because the service is saturated.

darthv723d ago

to you it may seem like the minority... but your bubble is shrinking because more and more are following suit. convenience is a hell of a drug and its also why physical sales only amount to 30% of overall game sales. times are changing, you either get with them or you get left behind.

neutralgamer19922d ago

Darth

30% physical sales: yet Phil and xbox division are in a rush go give up on that 30%. they don't have any right to give up any piece of the pie since the control such a little of the pie to begin with

also, the market is clearly speaking that the model Xbox is pushing isn't working right now the keyword being right now. you are right about freedom to play anywhere so i hope they put their games on steam

shinoff21833d ago

But that's been ms for years. When things aren't going their way they try to change the way things are said. For instance console sales are down, they stop telling how many sold instead telling us how many hours spent in halo or headshots. So it makes sense console sales down just say people are playing on more devices then previous. What they won't say is how many xbox players jumped ship to ps5.

Cacabunga3d ago

Hardware sales are so bad that Sony and Nintendo are blowing the sales off the water with their hardware.

If Xbox are losers, others aren’t..
Xbox already tried everything with Xbox live then subscriptions went down so much that they had to find something else. Their fans subscribed then reached saturation rather quickly.

Hardware and exclusive games is where it’s at! Keep gamers excited, announce decent software and people will support you

itsmebryan3d ago

@shin
Well keep it simple Sony 's operating income is down 26% and Microsoft's is up 32%. No MS spin there, just facts. 😉
Cheers

S2Killinit3d ago

MS is after diminishing consoles as a medium. They want to destroy this market because they couldnt win. MS’s vision is to dissolve console gaming.

romulus233d ago

Odd that a company that touts you dont need the hardware to play is already touting another console in the works.

darthv723d ago

They are not reliant on the HW but still want to maintain a presence (no matter how small) is a good thing. It shows commitment to the craft. It reminds me of SNK and how they made games for their own hardware (Neo Geo) while also making them for others because they knew there was a market to do so. They knew they would sell more to others but also sell to their own niche fan base.

TheEroica3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Perfectly reasonable post down voted by insecure corporation friendly folk.... But not gamers. Real gamer want accessibility and ease of acquisition for all.... Company shills are the only ones still telling us that hardware locking people from games is good for us.

Chevalier2d ago

@Darth

You should stop parroting metrics like an idiot without context.

"Xbox content and services revenue grew 62% in Q3 from a year earlier, “driven by 61 points of net impact” from the purchase of the third-party video game giant, Microsoft said."

61 of the 62% was from their merger so net increase is ONLY 1%

Too expensive hardware when others offer the same or more for less? Good work, Green Team.

SimpleDad3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

"Despite some early successes for Xbox games on rival platforms, Xbox hardware is down by a massive 31 percent this quarter."
"Without Activision Blizzard, Microsoft’s overall gaming revenue would have actually declined this quarter."
"Xbox content and services would have only been up a single percent without Activision Blizzard..."
"It looks like next quarter is going to be a similar story for gaming at Microsoft, too."

That is crazy... so A/B/K is carrying the whole Xbox gaming.
Oh and Microsoft will be fine. Windows, Office and Cloud are growing with each pc purchase.

purple1013d ago

Activision: "we gonna need a bigger rucksack/backpack please"

Microsoft: "why's that"

Activision: "to carry yo' weak ass'

Profchaos3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Top brass have also wanted to start seeing returns on the 100 billion they have put into various Xbox related moves so seeing more multiplatform games is highly likely especially from abk

It's basically saying that PlayStation is the reason Xbox is afloat right now thinks to Ps5 versions of COD

Kornholic3d ago

So basically PS and PC gamers' money is keeping Xbox on life support.

MrDead3d ago

The only growth MS will get out of the console industry is if it supports it's rivals platforms. Xbox is a pointless machine now. I can see them on a big push for live next, and they won't give up on trying to buy Steam.
