PS4 Slim to Release Worldwide on September 14

This is the closeup of the space between the two USB ports. It appears that the Square serves as the optical port and Sony also took the liberty to make the Circle a 3.5mm port. We still need official confirmation, but we know for sure that the space between the two USB ports was not a coincidence.

That's fugly and looks cheap. Since there is no upgraded part that I can tell based on the box, I would rather take the original PS4. It is less likely to have noise issue, despite being tad like a jet engine when the fan kicks in.

I don't see any significant new features on the PS4 slim. Doesn't look like they are trying to make it future proof at all and focused on maximum profits.

I admit the lack of logos may be concerning, but certainly not a definite sign that they aren't included.

Seems kind of silly for Sony not to include it, since it wouldn't cost them anything more to actually do so at this junction.

Lack of optical port I can understand though, but I do question how many people still use that since most receivers don't include that many optical inputs anymore...or why they would be using it if they are so concerned with UHD playback.

Believe I responded to your assertion in another comment. but again, it seems you are lacking in any knowledge on the system the same way dark was, so I hold you to the same standard of supporting your argument based on more than assumption. I can logically deduce probabilities, and concede that I may be wrong. All you seem to be willing to do is assert with absolute authority that what you say is true and will be the case.

While I will say that you are right about less features, we're talking about the inclusion of a rather major technology change that Sony has a pretty big stake in overall. There is no logical conclusion which comes to the fact that Sony would ignore it within the slim version of the console when at no time in the past have they shown they weren't willing to push a major technology that they had a stake in....CD, DVD, BR, all something Sony had a stake in. UHD is no different. Cheaper looking, and lesser quality, maybe, but I wasn't speaking on those issues, but will say that the removal of the optical port will be disappointing to some, so I guess you got me there. Those interested in UHD though....probably won't care though.

But again, the features themselves....well, no one here can state 100% they are in the know.

It would take nothing for Sony to support UHD/HDR on the stock PS4. Silicon requirements on the HDMI chip prevent it though. That change would be insignificant in the grand scheme of things cost wise for the slim version....and may even cost them less, but the overall gains for Sony would be huge, and it'd be rather odd for them to ignore that feature don't you think? Either way, it won't be much, because Sony makes their own controller chips.

Why not? The Neo could be set for the PlayStation Event in DEC instead of Now..its kinda like keep the talks toward PlayStation New hardware and software to keep consumers concentrated on PlayStation Hardware and not elsewhere.

Maybe this is the Neo. Maybe the Neo is the slim. Maybe all PS4's going forward will be 4TFlops, in a smaller footprint device.

Although, one week after the reveal for release is a super short time frame from a distribution perspective, and there's no way Sony could keep it under wraps since they'd have to ship it to retailers before they even reveal it.

I do agree though, Neo is the likely candidate for Sep. 7. Otherwise, all they are likely to be doing is showing games...and if they have a event just for that, then it's going to be hard to stop Sony going forward. More games would likely sell more systems than an upgraded console would.

Neo is likely though. And probably details on the slim, as well as an incoming price drop. If they manage to come in at $299 then things go back to normal. If they come in less, and it's a UHD player, they've pretty much just stalled X1S sales in their tracks. No doubt Sony already knows this, and no doubt, MS is capitalizing on the low UHD entry point to maintain a higher selling price for it's basic X1, which Sony could probably undercut without much issue, leaving MS to have to react to another price cut before they may be ready for one.

Gonna be interesting.

It could be priced $349 for the Slim and standard being phased out at $299. I would take the $299 unless there is some drastic new features, but it seems like the Slim is a dud on that area. It is literally a slimmed down version with no new features.

Sony is truly making PS4k/Neo the next real console, and leaving PS4 behind. They are not PS4 Slim to be future proof.

They might be adding something by subtracting something, a lower price. As far as 4K for the slim goes, I highly doubt they will include that because if the 4K feature is only available on the Neo then it will make the Neo that much more attractive. No 4K for the slim might also be necessary to keep the price really low, possibly undercutting the Xbone S console. Obviously these are my own assumptions. Either way, exciting times are ahead for PS4 owners and non PS4 owners jumping in on the new hardware.

I would think any gamer who is looking to get a PS4 this year would just wait and get the PS4 Neo which will be superior to the original PS4 and the PS4 Slim. 4K Blu-Ray and games will look and run better on the Neo. Plus it will run PSVR a lot better as well. That's a lot of cash to spend if you're getting PS4 Slim, PS4 Neo & PSVR. Unless Sony pushes PS4 Neo into 2017. Maybe that's what they will do.

Not known right now. I can't see why not though. It doesn't cost more to include what's needed for that since it just requires a change to the HDMI controller....which is the only thing preventing the stock X1 and PS4 from supporting it.

Would make sense for Sony to push it, even though stand alone players are dropping in price right now, and more options are coming to market soon. I also can't see why they'd want to let MS have that advantage over them with their slim offerings when there is no reason to, and it doesn't serve Sony's interest in the UHD market. Beyond just the systems themselves, Sony Pictures stands to make a lot of money off movie sales with UHD and 4K adoption, regardless of if it's fast or not, and it's not uncommon for people to pick up those impulse movies just to show off their purchases.

Sony could even have the upper hand and include a free movie or two. Something they did with the PS3 as I recall. Would cost MS more to do this.

I'd actually be disappointed if the slim isn't a UHD player, and seems really counter intuitive to Sony's typical MO.

I could see Sony doing something like X1S is. Upscaled to 4K, with HDR support for games. No real reason why the already more powerful PS4(over X1S) couldn't do this. A simple upgrade to the HDMI controller in the stock PS4 could enable this as well, as it doesn't require HDCP2.2 copy protection on games media...that's simply a limitation of the UHD copy protection.

Dolby TrueHD is an lossless audio codec already available on most blu ray players and is avaialable on the OGPS4...and I assume stock X1.

TrueHD has nothing to do with UHD or 4K, and is simply the dolby codec used for 7.1 surround sound.

TrueHD is actually being supplanted by Atmos and DTS has been the more commonly available codec in recent years, however, it's still included on many Blu-Ray discs, UHD or otherwise.

Maybe your ps4 but I have mine sitting vertically and its quiet, I do not even notice its on. Once in awhile certain games will make it louder but that's on a rare occasion.

It could be smaller. The Neo is supposedly using a pretty efficient 14nm chip that would run cooler than the OGPS4 chip despite the increased transistor count.

Not that I think this is the Neo, just that the heat generated by Neo is likely to be the same or less than the stock PS4. Things like the memory may run hotter if they go with faster memory, but memory technologies advance too, so that may not be the case either.

Quite honestly, there's a lot of wasted space on the stock PS4 main board. I think the space that is used up in the footprint is there mostly for the necessity of the drive components, the power supply, and of course the cooling system, and the size of the main board is layed out to facilitate the cooling system. But if Sony managed to get a more efficient 14nm chip, there really is no reason that the PS4 need be much bigger than the Wii U, just to accommodate the drives.

This isn't Sony reacting to what Microsoft has done lol Sony always plans several revisions for their consoles because it does two things 1) Reinvigorates the console sales 2) allows them to cut costs.

So you believe in 3 months time, Sony designed, tested, sourced, manufactured, distributed, and made a marketing plan for a Slim console based on the reveal of the X1S?

If so, Sony must be the most efficient company in the world. Do you realize just what a compliment you gave them to be able to say they managed to do all of the above in such a short time frame since the Xbox One S reveal(or even rumor).

This slim design has likely been in the works since before the PS4 released, and even the stock PS4 has seen redesigns to it's internals as that's the normal process for such things.

These slim revisions are more about reducing the costs of manufacturing the systems. Everything reduced, or made more efficient, is a reduction in costs. It may seem minimal in the grand scheme of things, but consider this. MS reduced the footprint of it's Xbox one by 40%. Think of how much plastic there is in the original X1 case. Now imagine how much money MS has to spend on the materials to get those made. Now imagine that across millions of consoles. Now imagine dropping that price 40%. Now apply that marginal cost across millions of consoles, and you see millions in savings. Now apply that to the motherboard, the drives, the reduction in parts overall, and you see why slims get made.

This is not a reaction, just the typical nature of electronics.

Both Sony and MS were forced to make smaller units because of the switch to smaller processors by the manufacture. So to continue to make them would have cost more since they are switch all the processing lines over to 14nm which yields more product and a greater profit for manufactures. The smaller processors also allow them to have a higher clock speed since cooling is less of an issue in the smaller form factor.

That is a very good question sir and I have a very good answer for you. Having options doesn't hurt consumers at all it's actually what we as consumers want. In my post I never said options hurt consumers. All I said was that having two consoles from the same company a month apart with one being much more powerful than the other would piss many consumers off not to mention confuse them. The question that will come into play is "why buy a Slim when the more powerful Neo is available?" What do you think is going to happen when regular consumers who just bought a PS4 Slim find out that there is a better version already out? Microsoft is already receiving a crap load of flak for releasing the Slim now and a year from now releasing Scorpio, and we are talking about a year from now!

Sony is coming out with Neo this year bud. The rumors of a September announcement and even a PS4 Slim where also with the same rumors of it coming out this year...ie the things being confirmed are from the same sources.. Sony historically has released new skus only weeks after reveal. They've never revealed a new sku of their devices MONTHS before release, its always been less then 3 weeks or a few days.

People are so slow, when I look at the slim it looks just like a ps4. Only difference is theres no parting line on one half of the system with a light. Its curvy instead of pointy and the top part is lower then the original. Those are the main difference I see, but still it looks like the original ps4.

I wonder what the solution they are using to mitigate the heat, when PS4 runs hot it gets noisy. This is really a VERY thin chasis... I'm surprised that they managed to get it so thin... the First Gen PS4s were built like 3rd generation PS3s. It really is a marvel at how Sony manages to go so small the first time with the PS4 and even smaller with this new PS4.

Now I wonder if the Neo may be up even more refined.

Exactly! I just posted something before about people praising Sony for every move they make even if it's a stupid one. If they are stupid enough to release the Neo a month after the Slim then they practically just killed the Slim. Why would anyone want to spend $300+ on an inferior system (PS4 slim) as oppose to the more powerful version (Neo)? I'll agree to an extent. You have to realize however that people who want the neo are not the same people who will want a slim. Even if it's a hundred dollar difference between the slim and neo it'll be enough for people looking to buy the cheaper version because they don't own a 4k tv. If you can afford to buy a 4k tv then you can afford to buy the neo which will have 4k capabilities.

As for VR I am not buying into that and I think Sony could be having an even bigger stranglehold on the market if it were not for the VR situation they're trying to push. All those first party VR games they're making could have been different projects for the ps4 itself. It would have been an avalanche of games that would have made ps4 continue its domination.

I respect your opinion but Sony assuming they do release two consoles during the holiday season is going to cause user confusion when they go and purchase a new console. Just like the media was saying about Scorpio with the Xbox One S the same thing will happen with the Slim PS4 and Neo. My son is 12 years old and is already asking for a Neo (he reads N4G just like me) if it comes out this holiday season. For many people it's all about what is better and how much does it cost.

VR when done right can be quite entertaining. I won't buy the PSVR set up Sony is going to sell because like you I don't feel VR is ready for console gaming. It's just a slim revision. I'm dumbfounded at how many people seem oblivious(or at least act that way) to the reasons slims are made, or how they somehow confuse the customer.

As far as the Neo, if it's confusing, then it's going to be confusing for the Scorpio as well. Yet many people seem to be aware of why the two are coexisting. This is no different, other than the rumored timing of their releases and reveals.

Slims don't require much focus in marketing beyond the normal price cuts and announcements they're available. They simply supplant the current version in the market in most cases, and the customer goes on as normal and buys a new console, and doesn't worry too much on if it's the original design or not. It's no more confusing than a regular price drop, and the only people who get worked up over slim revisions is the people on gaming forums who are typically well aware of the differences between the originals and the new versions.

That's the thing, if I was a betting man I would put money on Sony not releasing the Neo this year. Announcing it yes, but not releasing it. I mean why? Think about it, you have 40+ million PS4s out there. Even with Microsoft releasing the Slim which is way better than their original Xbox One in almost every way the sales gap is not going to magically shrink overnight not to mention that it's still not more powerful than the PS4. Both companies releasing slim models makes sense because of lowering production costs. But why not wait until next year to release the Neo? Why not release it against Scorpio and go for a "one on one" fight?

"It goes both ways" Actually, it does not and here's why, there are only two consoles out for Microsoft right now: Consumers can only purchase one or the other: the original Xbox One and the Xbox One S. If Sony does what everyone thinks they will do, they will have 4 consoles out for purchase: PSVR, PS4, PS4 Slim, and the PS4 Neo by the end of this year. That's four consoles for Sony compared to two of Microsoft. I didn't count Scorpio because it is not out for another year therefore it is not fracturing anything right now unlike what Sony will be doing (if rumors are true) by releasing the Neo this year. But I'll keep saying this over and over, in my opinion Sony will not release the Neo this year. Why kill the Slim right off the bat? I'd like at least one rear facing USB port. Quite truthfully, I really prefer the look of my UC4 and Arkham Knight bundles. I posted a picture of my One S and UC4 bundle side by side, and I like their respective designs about equally. Whereas before, I undoubtedly preferred my PS4's design to my original Xbox One's design. I love everything that MS did with the One S design. They nailed it's form factor all the while retaining, if not lowering it's heat and noise ouput. If this is in fact real, then I will definitely prefer the One S slim design revision to this from an aesthetics standpoint, though, I'd still like to see how this looks in a vertical orientation. I've never had any real issues with the PS4's heat or noise output like others claim to have had, even with the launch models, but it's definitely a bit hotter and a noticeable amount louder than my launch Xbox One was as well as my One S. I wonder if they revisited the cooling system, and the acoustics to account for the decrease in size. Edit: I didn't initially catch where it says in the article that there's a rear facing USB port. I still prefer my current models by far, but I also still need to see it stood vertically. A lot of what I love about my PS4's design seems to have been removed. The sharp corners, the power indicator light strip, etc...

i dont really get why people are into these smaller consoles when all they do is give you more heat inside of your system and the more heat you system produces the more it slows it down so expect worst frames. i dont own a xone but i consider that to be a good size if i was going to buy a console my ps3 produces so much heat some times that it makes you drowsy and not wanting to finish the game you are playing. my full tower doesnt have that problem becuase i have 4 high end fans and water cooling on. but i will look out for the neo i hope it can keep yakuza at 60 and maybe higher res

scorpio is an upgrade. Its more than 300% more powerful than the ps4 and it will run in parallel with the One and the One S as different price points based on power and capability so you can choose how much machine you want. The ps4 Slim is just a smaller version of the same PS4.

even the One S got some upgrades in the form of a small gpu boost, HDR lighting, 4k streaming, 4k bluray, an upgraded controller and an internal power supply relieving you of that huge massive brick behind the media console.

As a ps4 owner I wouldn't buy this because theres no reason for me to. I'll by the Neo when it comes out, i'll buy scorpio when its out. The ps4 slim is only an option in that its not as big as the original ps4 so you can choose between small and smaller which seems like a fairly insignificant range in terms of options.

i like the original ps4 design better. The slim is smaller which is cool, but it also looks kinda cheaper. I'm also disappointed that they didn't really apply even any small little upgrades (the one S got HDR lighting support, a small gpu boost, 4k streaming, 4k bluray etc). This is literally just smaller. I feel like MS is kinda accelerating the better hardware front right now. especially if you factor in "Neo" an "Scorpio". I mean Scorpio is more than a ps4 more powerful than Neo. Should get interesting in the near future. Sony has the brand hype and up until now the most powerful hardware. We'll see how it all goes down when MS ends up with the more powerful hardware.
