Why Prey has nothing to do with the original Prey

"We got to see footage of Prey for the first time at Quakecon this year, and it looks good so far. It’s a sci-fi take on Dishonored’s immersive sim toolbox, it’s set in a fully explorable space station, and hey—you can transform into a coffee cup and bobble around. But why is it Prey? The original game from 2006 was fun, but after all the years since Prey 2 failed to materialize, is the Prey name worth resurrecting? How did this happen?" - PC Gamer

Urgh...lousy excuses

I hate when developers just leave a great game open ended and don't continue it...especially when they had a great main character to go along with it.

You literally could have said that the game is set a few months after the first Prey and Tommy has been working for a council of aliens from different species to help take down the larger threat (the one who invaded Earth) and he infiltrated one of their mother ships only to be caught...now he fights to survive as the aliens toy with him.

There...done...Tommy is main character and it's a sequel.

Not hard.

I just don't see how you can take a name of an IP and not make it anything to do with what the name already stands for, what you are creating is a new IP so call it something else. Hell set it in the same Universe or give it a subtitle.

Simon_the_sorcerer2839d ago

I think you´re right, as it makes very little sense to do it like this. And I think that the devs should have picked up the game where Humanhead studios left it off.

" No, in terms of a high level concept it’s like aliens, on a space station, survival kind of stuff, so it was a good fit,” he said. “But there’s no fictional connection and no universe connection if you want that.” - The above quote pretty much confirms that this game should be a new IP. Let's see which other devs decide to "reboot " IPS with no connections to the original. It's a shame Bethesda is too cheap to even brand this game as a new franchise.

-Foxtrot2838d ago (Edited 2838d ago )

I know, the evidence is right there.

People always say "Why do we get sequels, remasters and reboots...we want NEW IPs"

*Something like this comes out*

Then they say "Whaaa...come off it guys stop holding onto the past, it looks alright"

It's one or the bloody other. Take Assassins Creed Black Flags, that should have been a new Pirate RPG franchise especially when it's unmatched in the game market. Tomb Raider 2013 could have been a full on action adventure game to give it it's old identity and not ruin someone elses and something like RE7 could have been a new IP which fills the void what P.T left behind.

They should stop changing franchises by turning them into a shadow of their former selfs and make new IPs franchises that can grow better without being held back by the old franchises lore/roots.

Sciurus_vulgaris2838d ago

@Foxtrot I disagree with you on Tomb Raider (2013), the game felt like a more grounded and modernized Tomb Raider, also Lara was still the main character. While I haven't played any Assassin Greed games, I'm certain they all have story connects and overall similar gameplay mechanics. I am also not against existing IPs expanding into different genres, along as the titles are interconnected in some manner.

My guess why they are using the 'Prey' title is because i believe 'Prey 2' had around 70 thousand pre-orders in USA without a release date before they cancelled the game.

To be honest, i do not care what they call the new 'Prey' game . If it is a good game, then i am on board.

Still prefer the Human Heads Studios version... hope someone leaks it since it's a full game they shelved.

Simon_the_sorcerer2838d ago

So do I. Btw, did you know that their office burned down at one point?

-Foxtrot2838d ago

Yeah.

I mean Prey 2 didn't look like a Prey sequel either with the generic looking shaven head space marine main character, only to (in my opinion) shove Tommy in as an NPC when we called them out over it....buuuuuut at least it was going to be a sequel of the original game in some form despite not really feeling like Prey. However neither does this so out of the two Prey 2 was the better version.

Activemessiah2838d ago

Have you played Prey with Sikkmod?

-Foxtrot2838d ago

I have not but it looks really good

Maybe they should have released a remastered Prey game to remind people what Prey actually is about.

Antifan2838d ago

Looks mediocre. It just makes me want a Dead space sequel.

Yui_Suzumiya2837d ago

This and Resident Evil VII were some of the highlights of E3 .. both day 1 purchases

Bismarn2837d ago

Bethesda has actually done something like this before. Remember Pirate of the Caribbean for the original Xbox? It was actually Sea Dogs II and then Pirates came out in theaters, was a big hit, and a quick switcheroo was made. Didn't end up mattering as the game was a mess.

All Hopes I Had For A Prey Sequel Have Been Crushed — Well Done, Microsoft

The magnificent Prey was once again abandoned as Microsoft disregarded Arkane Austin's achievements and crucified it just for Redfall.

RaidenBlack4d ago

well, not entirely ... the main Arkane studio i.e Arkane Lyon's still there ...
Its only that, the sequel will take more time now ... after Blade & Dishonored 3

MrBaskerville3d ago

But who knows, Dishonored 3 could have been Austins next project, so might be cancelled.

RaidenBlack2d ago

Dishonored is Lyon's flagship IP ... Austin only assisted in the first one, the sequel was wholly developed at Lyon whilst Austin developed Prey.
If Dishonored 3 was indeed greenlit ... rest assured, it would've been helmed primarily by the Lyon studio.

-Foxtrot4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Not even this Prey

Still longing for a sequel to the original Prey with Tommy

The studio didn't even want to call this Prey, it was just Bethesda being dicks to them for some reason.

RaidenBlack4d ago

MS closed Roundhouse Studios (ex-Human Head Studios) as well

Yui_Suzumiya3d ago

Yeah, that's who was going to do the original sequel.

bunt-custardly3d ago

Don't worry there are some other games in development that might fill that void. Look up Vigilancer.

isarai4d ago

Came here to say this, my hooes for a Prey sequel died when this "Prey" came out

Profchaos3d ago

Prey 2017 still hurts to play because what could have been looked so incredible

Profchaos3d ago

Same Bethesda basically screwed over the original developer team human head back around 2011 so it was really never going to come despite a honestly amazing trailer. I liked prey 2017 but it always held a stink of disappointment due to what we never got

FinalFantasyFanatic3d ago

I really didn't like this game, tried it because of how loved the original Prey was, played the demo of this one and thought it was garbage, it didn't feel nice/fun to play.

LostPotato4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Keep dreaming then as Prey and Dishonored 2 did not sell well enough to get sequels.

Hence we got Deathloop and Redfall instead.

RaidenBlack4d ago

lol, Deathloop came from Prey: Mooncrash idea

Unknown_Gamer57943d ago

To everyone who cheered MS’s acquisitions, we told you so…

Inverno3d ago

Those people will just argue that Arkane Austin and Tango would've been shut down either way.

MrBaskerville3d ago

Zenimax allready put them in a tight spot by demanding them to do a multiplayer title. So it's not unlikely, considering how bad the game performed. They didn't stand a chance. MS had the money to save them and to correct Zenimax' mistakes.

10 Commercial Flops That Are Actually Good Games

BY JOHN: There are lots of commercially successful games that are, to put it mildly, not very good. Whether they launch broken, or they’re just a cookie-cutter version of another title, some games just hit the jackpot when it comes to sales numbers.

But, what about those games that are well worth playing but don’t sell well? It can be too easy to miss a great gaming experience just because it wasn’t a commercial smash hit, despite having a strong story or interesting gameplay mechanics. This can be due to poor marketing, the timing not being right in the market or dozens of other reasons.

Here are ten games that flopped commercially but are well worth checking out.

Prey shouldn't have been connected to the original, they should've changed the name. It looked good and had decent exploration but it was way too long and the ending was trash. Definitely gets more praise in the comments than it should.

FinalFantasyFanatic194d ago

I actually hated Prey after playing the demo, for me, it felt so bad to play, I agree that it gets more praise than it deserves. Most of this list is fine though, there are some really good games on there.

Nacho_Z194d ago

I couldn't get on with Prey either, sounded great on paper but I didn't enjoy it at all. I don't think I like Arkane, tried to get into Dishonored years before and it left me cold.

Concertoine194d ago

Did you play it on ps4/xbone? If so, yeah, it played terribly on those machines. 90 second load times, horrible input lag.

I couldnt enjoy the game until it got updated for Series X

Barlos193d ago

I really want to like Prey. I've gone back to it a few times on my Steam Deck but I don't know, I just can't get into it. Mind you, I'm not the biggest fan of immersive sims

FinalFantasyFanatic193d ago

@Concertoine,

Actually it was PS4, I don't recall anyone mentioning that it was console specific at the time though.

I liked Prey (2017), but I think the original Prey was more polished and arguably better game of the two. If Bethesda had been so cheap, Prey (2017) could have trade marked as “Nightmare on Talos” or “Typhon “.

Minute Man 721194d ago

Played the demo of Prey (2007)

Never got around to actually playing it but it's BC so one day (soon) I'll hunt it down

shinoff2183193d ago

I really liked prey, but I'll add I never finished. Dishonored, was a borefest for me I couldn't get into it with multiple times of trying.

gigoran8193d ago

The ORIGINAL Prey sequel looked dope as F. I would have loved to have played that instead of what we got.

jznrpg194d ago (Edited 194d ago )

I couldn’t get into Prey when I played it. I own it so I’ll try again someday.

Petebloodyonion194d ago

I think the issue with Prey is how the media were infatuated with everything done by Arkane Studio and the Dishonored Universe.
For some reason they need to remind us all the time that Dishonored is among the best games and everything related to that suddenly becomes near perfection.
cue the same treatment for Deathloop.

Crows90194d ago

Dishonored 1 is incredible. The 2nd is pretty darn good too ...

All their other games have been average to bad.

FinalFantasyFanatic193d ago (Edited 193d ago )

Idk if I agree, I never really hear Dishonoured being talked about a lot, I think the amount of attention Deathloop got was fine for what it was, then again, I never really cared that much for Arkane Studio's games.

gold_drake194d ago

omg. Blur was soo good, still have my copy :)

LoveSpuds193d ago

I think the problem was releasing at the same time as another great racer, Split Second, no doubt the cannibalised each others potential sales.

Both great games but I think I prefer Split Second, just about!!

Arkane Studios is Leaving Money on the Table Without a Prey 2

Game Rant Writes "With Redfall's launch on the horizon, Arkane Studios shouldn't miss out on the renewed popularity of a particular genre with a sequel to Prey."

It was ok but not a great game . Plus gamepass will prevent physical sales. It’s not a system seller type of game

SimpleSlave412d ago

One of the best game of the generation with the worst name ever. Neuro Shock (not Prey 2017) alongside the Dishonored franchise should be given the 1st Party treatment by Microsawft.

Why buy absolute monster studios like Arkane just to waste them away making Gamepass bait? Don't you have Rare for that? Soon you'll have ActivisionBlizzard for that too.

Give this Redfall: Rebellion version of the game to a low tier studio and let Arkane make a true 1st Party Single Player game about vampires called Redfall.

SMH...

shinoff2183412d ago

I enjoyed prey but if I remember right the original stuff had you playing a alien bounty hunter. Would've been so much more fun
