This article discusses a study which suggests that when gamers see blood in video games, they experience physical and psychological changes that encourage play. The article goes on to discuss how the correlation between in-game blood and the physiology of the player may be responsible for the fact that M-Rated games are consistently rated higher and sell better.
Quote: "In layman's terms, this means that whenever you kill a bad guy in your favorite M-rated title, if you are rewarded with a excessively gory payoff, your heartbeat, perspiration, and breathing levels all increase. What's more, if using a particular weapon produces more blood than others, players tend to favor that weapon in order to keep the river of viscera flowing. Maybe that's why gamers responded so favorably to weapons like Gears of War's over-the-top chainsaw bayonets… the guns that make the biggest, bloodiest messes tend to be the ones that gamers turn to again and again."
They don't make games like this anymore.
Too dated in my book. The AI is way too unpredictable to be acceptable today. It's definitely a game of its time.
I had a good time with the game. It is a product of its time. But when it came out it was a must have game for a lot of people. I wish Ubisoft would make another game in the series or at least a reboot.
Due to the lack of modern stealth games, and me constantly playing the MGS series, I've been looking for alternative stealth games to play, and went back and re-played the SC series recently. I wouldn't call SC1 or SC:PT masterpieces, there are AI issues, they're very much trial-and-error games, and that can lead to a lot of frustration. I also found the stories in this series to be boring, uninteresting, and just sloppily told. Cinematics are also of poor quality for both in-game scenes and CG cut-scenes, the soundtrack didn't leave any impression on me either.
Chaos Theory is better, but there was still a lot of room for improvement, and Double Agent (old gen ver.) was a sloppy mess that ended up a regression from CT. But still, at least they tried back then, these days Ubi-junk doesn't even try to make good games!
Skewed and Reviewed have written an Opinion Piece covering issues in the gaming industry, how current issues were issues years ago, and what can be done to help restore consumer trust.
Nothing. It's up to the gamers to stop consuming content from companies that they don't agree with.
Marie Dealessandri speaks to Borislav Slavov and Gustavo Santaolalla about “the new golden age of games music”.
I don't care how powerful you can force push... I just wanted to cut off some stormtrooper heads, but the descision to make the game T for Teen means I'll have to wait for a PC version... and a mod. :(
Gore is good, but a lot of the time gore is just stapled on to make a game seem 'cool' and marketable to anyone, especially the manufactured 'hardcore' demographic.
Its more about dealing pain and the accompanying animations in my opinion; which can even be done in Ratchet and Clank, EDF2017, Crackdown, Jak and Daxter, Uncharted, GTAIII series, Halo and Serious Sam without the OTT gore and still satisfy like the article states.
Basically, the demand of chunks and blood red gore in games has now become niche over the few years, nothing special and will become as 'cool' as the overused and tired bullet time mechanic from last gen over the remainder of this gen.
I couldn't kill civilians randomly in GTA 4. It was just a little too realistic and the blood splatter...wow...it was kind of disturbing. I guess I am one of the few who felt that way.
Side-note : I also find the level of violence in Fallout 3 far too exaggerated. I can understand the reason why it will be banned in certain countries. Let's face it, some of the death scenes are atrocious. I also think, and I am going to get disagrees for that, that they would have spent their time better in making better animations for the stiff characters rather than rendering flying limbs and other physics effect.
Haha, Could any japanese fighter fan (SF Fans in particular) imagine what a scandal it would be or how out of place it would seem if SF had blood in it like MK.
I guess I'm an exception. I'm tired of gore and blood, I just want unique and fun game/story.
I agree with this artical, its really good =]
Seriously, you dont enjoy killing the crap out of people ingame and watching them splatter all over the place?
You must be some twisted kid ;p
