No Man’s Sky developer talks the game's delayed launch, Minecraft influence, and epic scale

Standard: Think of the hazards associated with developing a video game and the possibility of receiving death threats probably won’t rank very highly. But Sean Murray, 36-year-old architect of the upcoming No Man’s Sky, is talking me through how a release date wrangle over his newest title led to a wave of violent online invective. “I had written a blog post for Sony that was going to announce the delay,” says Murray in the PlayStation maker’s sunny Soho office.

Congrats on all the hard work Sean, a few more days and you can sleep... and have a shower.... and shave. Yes, you can shave.

Yeah the beard kind of reminds of Forest Gump when he went for his cross country run,,

"Still, Murray didn’t inform the police. “I think the level of crazy you have to be to be mean to someone on the internet and the level of crazy you have to be to actually do those things is really different,” reasons the Cork-born developer. Maybe."

No, not maybe. He has the exact right attitude to take with internet death threats. People say stupid things when they're angry or upset and what they say gets even worse when they're completely anonymous. Pearl clutching and freaking out about nasty comments on the internet is the worst way to respond, and Sean Murray totally has the right attitude.

A death threat to someone on the street will get you jail time and one online should do the same. People get online and act like fools and it needs to stop.

fiveby92844d ago

Some people believe they have anonymity on the internet and then act extremely poor in ways they would never do face to face. Nearly every thing can be tracked down to the real person. I hope the people levying threats to Sean were dealt with by law enforcement. Very sick to threaten someone's life. Personally I think Sean should have notified police.

this man lied about so much stuff about in (or not in now) this game. once the game bombs i hope no publisher thinks twice about funding another game for him.

ArchangelMike2844d ago

What exactly has Sean Murray lied about?

shammgod2844d ago

not sure what you are talking about...can you give some examples?

Are you on the wrong comment board?

90/10 life rule. Ship classes and differences. "weirder planets and creatures closer to the centre" Community working together to discover crafting recipes. Everything has a blueprint. "hundreds of hours" to reach the centre. "Epic space battles" Element combination.

Features that still haven't been seen, even by daymeeuhn:

Portals.

Ringed planets.

Sandworms (or any subterranean creature really)

Barren planets.

Leaving messages for players.

Ship naming.

AI wingmen.

Animals walking in herds.

Cloaking devices.

Mountain-sized mountains.

Harvesting resources from stars.

Day/night cycles being caused by planetary rotation.

Creature food chains. None of those ship formations flying overhead on planet surface.

No sign of creatures affecting trees and fauna (like the rhino in second trailer)

@dizeestl...think you're reaching a bit. There may be some overselling, but those things have been seen. See, the issue is that there are 18 quintillion planets. Each person will randomly be dropped on one. So, what are the chances of seeing exactly what you want (ringed planets, barren planets, the exact creature you are looking for, herd animals, etc.)? That's kind of what makes this game so different. You might not get "mountain-sized mountains) and I might. With this algorithm, even the devs don't know what they will find. Thus, the drones that send back gifs for them to see. These gifs, as well as some of the planets that the devs have explored, shows some of those things. Just because someone hasn't found them, doesn't mean they don't exist. That's why rushing to the center isn't the way to play. You'll likely miss out on a bunch of details that those that explore will find.
It's a bit too early to call him a liar. Is there some overselling and PR in there? Of course. But, it's not any more than what you see any other developer do.

ArchangelMike2844d ago (Edited 2844d ago )

Let me get this straight. The game has 18,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets. It would take over 5 billion years to visit each one. And you think Daymeun would have visited all of them by now to see all the game has to offer?

Man, you're either really dumb, crazy, or just a troll. For your sake I hope it's the latter.
If that's the case, then all I have to say is:
The bridge is that way--------------------------- ------------------------------ - ------------------------------ - ----------------->

So it looks like they have abandoned unreal for future iterations of the game and are sticking with ego. So that means no decent VR support on PC and none on console seeing as the ego can't handle it properly. I think I'm done with this franchise it's turned into fifa with a hefty price tag and no innovation from one year to the next. Time for someone else to have a go at this licence
