The paid open beta of SAC: First Assault online become available free to play for North America next week. First Assault Online is a online squad based first person shooter. As a member of Section 9, First Assault players are part of an elite force of cybernetically enhanced combat operatives tasked with protecting society and fighting terrorists on the bleak streets of a futuristic Japan. Currently players have 8 different operatives to play as, each with their own signature cyber-skills, as well as 3 modes in several futuristic locations. With the new update next week Neople and Nexon America will introduce a new original operative, as well as a new mode inspired by the classic "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" series that brings hacking into the mix. We are totally interested into getting our hands on this and let you know how it is. Because we grew up with this series, and seeing it turned into something so big, should be good. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex debuted on PSP back in 2005 - and it's about time it was revisited on modern hardware.
PSP version had more characters to the story and an anime feel as limited as it was for a portable. You could customize the controls but lack of seconds analog stick hurt it. And it was an easy game.
PS2 version was better. Third person where you get to see the anime characters, better controls as there was a camera stick, play as Batou with heavy weapons, stealth as the Major is known for. Cool music, great graphics for the time, hacking puzzles, multiplayer vs. It's not a hard game like what was said. And for those writers that ummm.. aren't good, there's an *EASY* difficulty. But you just needed to know your controls and your characters strengths.
Sorry. PS2 version is better in my opinion. Yes, it lacks Tachikoma gameplay. But everything else was better.
Been playing through this on occasional sessions. Haven't beaten it yet but it is very fun, lots of interesting mechanics, especially how it stays true to the run & gun meunuevers of the series.
While the soul of the Ghost of the Shell anime appears absent, First Assault is an enjoyable free-to-play shooter built with help from its community.

There was an awesome ghost in the shell game on the original PS. The closest thing that has come to the gameplay was Vanquish, which was pretty badass. I would love to see a remake with Kusanagi!
