The Effects Of Video Games On The Brain

For many, gaming can be an escape from everyday life, for others it can be a way to just waste time. Regardless of why we play video games, they ultimately advocate a healthy mind.

ofcourse it advocates a healthy mind.

But too much of anything is a bad thing. And Gaming sometimes tends to be the hobby you just can't maintain short bursts of, especially when you were younger. Even alcohol is good in appropriate amounts.

It does have its strengths, but if went overboard (which people do), the side effects are much much worse than going overboard on outdoor activities. In 5-6 years I might become a parent, and then probably my thinking on this manner will change again too.

Yea, I just found out I'm becoming a father, 4 days ago. Super excited, but I will admit my gaming addiction has caused me to miss some opportunities in my career. Putting stuff off in favor of binge gaming. I love gaming and I definitely want to game with my child, but I want him/her to moderate it more than I ever did. I'm a working artist, but feel I could have been way more successful if I devoted more time to it.

edit- the occasional binge gaming IS alright.

Shubhendu_Singh2840d ago

Congratulations OtterX on the baby.

And yeah, thinking about marriage and raising a child really puts perspective on your things. My father didn't game at all but I made my hobby out of it. I am worried if my child saw me glued to my PC or on mobile playing PokeGO from year1, he/she is going to be thrice as screwed as I was at his/her age.

Null19802840d ago

Thank you very much! Still feels surreal.

I actually haven't had any interest in Pokemon Go, but it does sound like a fun toy to share with a little one. They don't have to actively play, they'll have fun just helping you find them. It will encourage him or her to get out and enjoy nature and local culture. For parents, I defintely see it as a positive thing. It can also be a good tool to teach them about responsibility and safety... as many people are doing dangerous things, getting hurt with it.

iceman062840d ago

Congratz!!! Parenthood brings perspective to a LOT of things. As you said, moderation is the key as well as keeping priorities straight. Seems to me that you'll be fine because you have the incite and wherewithal to KNOW that it had been an issue. Not to mention that your baby will be a constant reminder. Good luck and happy parenting.

Null19802840d ago (Edited 2840d ago )

Thanks iceman. That's really encouraging to hear. :)

UltraNova2840d ago (Edited 2840d ago )

Wow congrats!

Ladies and gents we have a new daddy around!

That said you better move your gaming stuff in a seperate room kept locked while you are in there until your child is old enough to see dad playing games. And when its time you better have an N64 around to let him/her experience Mario 64, thats what I cant wait to do with my child when him/she is old enough!

Goldby2840d ago (Edited 2840d ago )

Congrats OtterX,

I always try to look at the world half full instead of half empty, and reading your comment about how you missed some opportunities in life due to gaming can be looked at from both sides, While yes you did miss an opportunity, it may have been a blessing in disguise, as you being kept at home and in the situation your are in now may be exactly where you need to be for when that lightbuld clicks on with inspiration.

My little brother is an artist aswell, and said a last year he regretted binge gaming with Bloodborne as he missed an appointment for a museum that was holding open calls for artists. in that last year, he met his BF, they share a place and he has stuff showing in Milan now instead of the local art museum.

Based of volumetric pressure alone, when one door closes, another one opens

So look at it this way, for all you know your inspiration could be photos of your child playing video games. (assuming your a photographer)

Null19802840d ago

@UltraNova Thanks man! My parents have my old SNES, Genesis, N64, PS1 and games still in storage at their house somewhere. They have the NES too, but it blew out in a thunderstorm over 15 years ago. :P Still have all the games though, may try to pick up a used one somewhere. Yea, I definitely want them experiencing the classics!

I hope the NX doesn't disappoint either. I never have picked up a WiiU, even though I thought about it. Definitely want our kid growing up on Nintendo.

Kleptic2840d ago

Congratulations, Otter.

Most have touched on the 'important' issues, so I won't keep rehashing that. I've been a father for eight months to the day. My only pro tip would be: get into woodworking as well as your current hobbies. You're an artist, you're probably very creative, and with just a bit of practice and research along with a few relatively inexpensive tools and supplies...you can build things like cribs and baby gates and stuff that'll make the mother absolutely freak out...and overall building most of that stuff is far less expensive, and safer, than anything you can actually purchase.

Show them something you built, and they give incredible leniency with the occasional 'selfish hobby' like gaming, going out with the guys like nothing's changed, etc. I can't say I ever had a problem with gaming too much, but I do know the tolerance from the other person in the house went sky high when I found a different hobby that helped her out more than gaming. Doesn't have to be woodworking exactly, I just mean my big 'trick' was a hobby that output useful items related to parenting, and you'll then get a lot more leeway for the hobbies that don't haha.

Thanks Goldby! I do freelance from home. Everything from children's books, an animated tv show I worked on once and even some games in the last few years. You can check out my portfolio in my bio here on N4G. Yea, it hasn't been a large amount, and nothing really substantial. Maybe something you've heard of, but haven't actually played, like Goosebumps the Game when I freelanced with WayForward. Always struggling with keeping consistent work though. Currently looking for my next gig right now actually. Surviving on my wife's work right now, also an artist who does children's books.

Definitely going to kick it into high gear with this news. We're just barely making it as it is, but I know we're capable of more. And yes, even today, excessive gaming still holds me back.

I will admit too though that gaming helped inspire my creativity growing up, so it's definitely not a bad thing in moderation. :)

Congrats to your brother, btw!

(sorry, I responded in the wrong spot :P )

People are going to ruin themselves with the rise of realistic VR.

lolosgolos2840d ago

Best thing to ever happen to me when I was young. Still have my burning rubber cartridge

Scatpants2840d ago

They make your brain awesome.

Ark_2840d ago

If one writes an article about the effects of videogames on the brain and refers to different psychological studies - be a lamb and reference them arcordingly. A university graduate should know that. As it stands the article is not worth reading.

fatsodubmo2840d ago (Edited 2840d ago )

They are preparing our brains for brain-computer interface. We gamers will be able to accept it much easier than non-gamers, especially after vr.

DrJones2839d ago

VR will by like graduating from alcohol to heroin. It will be even more more damaging if used too much.

Sony just needs to up its resolution and framerate and it'll be quite the service, still don't like streaming though so doesn't really matter to me.

SpaceRanger1539d ago

Why is Xbox GamePass on this? Not a streaming service.

CaptainCook1538d ago

Xcloud will be included with Xbox Game Pass this year

RazzerRedux1538d ago

And they announced that.....when?

CaptainCook1538d ago (Edited 1538d ago )

@RazzerRedus
Here's the link from the engineers themselves talking about Xcloud at Xbox London Event 2019.

"There's 2 things.. We are going to give you the games you own from the cloud or the games you've purchased in the future, and we will bring Game streaming to Xbox Game Pass so you are Free to discover and play anywhere and everywhere"

https://youtu.be/VTveV4Yfh2...

SpaceRanger1538d ago

Once again, why is Xbox GamePass on this? Your comment only further proves my point.

RazzerRedux1538d ago

@CaptainCook

Thanks. I missed that announcement obviously.

Neither is Uplay or Origin. "Journalism"

2pacalypsenow1539d ago (Edited 1539d ago )

The only game streaming services are PS Now, Stadia and GeForce Now.

Xbox Game pass, Uplay plus and Origin aren’t streaming.

A 24-year-old inhabitant of Poland has received nearly 9 thousand charges of illegal distribution of games. His idea was to buy digital versions of the games and then resell access to the account to many people. Losses he caused were valued at nearly $260,000. He pleaded guilty to all charges.

Exvalos1541d ago

Omfg lmao!!!!! Never a more perfect time to say that

badz1491541d ago

it's not over 9000 though

Father__Merrin1541d ago

these cretins are all over ebay you search for a game key and something cheap comes up once you click on the post its actually not a game key but rather access to a account. theres no option on ebay to report them

arkard1541d ago (Edited 1541d ago )

Should be, what does not participate in digital sales (unless something changed im unaware of) so a sale like that is against there terms and conditions

I was wrong, they do allow digital items now.
https://www.ebay.com/help/p...

But I checked and there is still a reporting tool on the mobile website at least. You have to scroll pretty far down to get to it though

nucky641541d ago

not sure about that. i used to sell digital codes from blu ray movies i bought. i never used them so it seemed like a waste. i usually put them up for sale for a third of what the entire movie package cost me. the last time i tried to do this (around 2 months ago) i get message that trying to sell digital copies isn't allowed.

nucky641541d ago

so true. i was always curious as to how people were allowed to do that. now i know - they aren't supposed to.

Cyb3r1541d ago

Some websites sell accounts too Im surprised that noting is being done about this

JackBNimble1541d ago

And they're all stolen accounts

1541d ago
JackBNimble1541d ago

Why are they calling this trading accounts, this is plain and simply stealing.
