In a survey by GDC Europe, developers exhibited a much higher interest in PS4 than XB1. However, PS VR is behind both the Vive & Rift.

Only natural that the PSVR would be behind. It's restricted by the PS4 so wont acheive as much technically. No shock that the PS4 dominates as a console thpugh.

ILostMyMind2846d ago (Edited 2846d ago )

And probably will sell more games than Vive and Rift together.

no wonder why we have so much console warz on the forums between the xbox and playstation, seems like other than the pc and smartphones nothing else really matters. including nintendo. what is most alarming is how little the pc gets recognized here on favor of the xbox versus the playstation.

wonderfulmonkeyman2846d ago

I doubt that, considering it won't have as many games as Vive and Rift.
Sony's just dabbling in this: their strong sales have always come from proper console games, and PSVR isn't gonna change that.

darthv722846d ago

Wow, smartphones/tablets and PC/Mac are really dominating the console numbers. PS4 has a slight edge over XB1 but nothing to crazy.

sony has a history of great games and franchises. think ill go with psvr because of that.
the success of VR is dependent on psvr

iceman062846d ago

Imo, it has very little to do with limitations. VR is, at this point, niche tech and there are risks involved with developing for it. That will scare some devs away from it. PS4, on the other hand, has proven it's worth thus far (to developers). If they want to get some of that money, it makes sense to be attracted to the console that has the current sales lead.

I only care about the virtual theater mode and 3d suppirt, vr games I'll worry about later

Errorist762845d ago

Oh, the moment it will have sold way more than the others developers' interest will soon rise.

Strange that there is more developing for the WII U than the NX. Is that down to NDAs that they can't say they are??
In terms of developers favouring ps4 over xb1 isn't surprising. They'll go where the bigger user base is.
VR seeing more interest than AR... shocker....

I guess having htc and occulous on an open system is advantageous for devs so they prefer working on that. However the interest in PSVR is basically up there with occulous so the looks good for the future.

Alexious2846d ago

NX isn't considered in the survey at all, so that's not a factor we can evaluate. It will be next year though

ninsigma2846d ago

It's in the first graph, which is why I mentioned it.

Alexious2846d ago

@ninsigma - Ah, you're right, missed that. What threw me off is that NX is not in the interest slide, which is weird - it would have made more sense there than in the other one.

rainslacker2846d ago

Was the survey anonymous? If it were, NDA's wouldn't prevent devs from saying anything for or against something as innocuous as what was asked. It only restricts revealing sensitive information about the system, or even that it exists if it hadn't been revealed.

If it wasn't anonymous, then once announced, the dev is allowed to say that they are developing for it, and give their personal opinion on if they like it or not, sometimes with varying levels of detail on what they can do with it or what not. They may be restricted from revealing other things, such as that they have a dev kit or something along those lines, as knowing the dev kits are out there, and for how long, can lead to sensitive information being gleaned by competitors.

KaiPow2846d ago

Sony doesn't have the pleasure of being the first headset out of the game, and after mixed reception to the Oculus, it's understandable that developers' interest would be a bit skewed.

sampson31212846d ago

sony will make VR successful. games games games.

TheCommentator2846d ago

Shovelware. Last gen graphics. Needs Neo to be any good. Sounds like success to me...

Stogz2846d ago

@theCommentator guess you need to say something to make yourself feel better about what the devs said, huh?

2pacalypsenow2846d ago

Sony made DVD and Blu Ray successful now they will make VR successful.

dcbronco2845d ago

2Pack you have a wild imagination. DVD was already extremely popular before the PS2 released. A friend owned a video store and got nonstop request to switch to DVD. It did help by providing a cheap player, but DVD was already huge.

Bluray is popular among a certain demographic. Overall DVD still rules. Bluray was actually passed by streaming some time ago. While many also bought ps3 as a bluray player, bluray can't reach DVD sales numbers. Best bluray sales of all time are around 7-8 million I believe and that's lifetime. There are DVDs that hit that at launch and go one to 20+ million copies.

2pacalypsenow2845d ago (Edited 2845d ago )

DVD sales more than doubled after 2000 worldwide after being out in the market since 1997 majority of people were still using VHS before the PS2 made DVD popular, and Blu Ray won the Format war thanks to the Ps3

Deadpooled2845d ago

@dbronco @2apocalypse

It also helps that DVDs have become really cheap nowadays, blu ray is getting cheaper though, but as internet speeds improve streaming is taking over

It'll be the first on console, which is probably good enough for Sony's purposes. I think VR is going to be a mixed reception either way. Won't make it unsuccessful or successful because of that. It will all be in their messaging, marketing, and ultimately price and content. The first isn't always the market leader, and often isn't always successful, so there's more to it than getting there first. For instance, Apple wasn't the first with a smart phone.

-Foxtrot2846d ago

If PSVR or VR general fails longterm I hope Sony will suck it up at the end of this gen, realise it's not working and move on for next gen.

sampson31212846d ago

from what I've been hearing, psvr games have been getting good reviews. VR, think we're talking about the future here. not a fad

-Foxtrot2846d ago

Well we don't really know do we that's why I said "If"

But people think they are psychics and assume it's going to be the "future"

wonderfulmonkeyman2846d ago

Nah.
VR is most definitely a fad, in its current form.
The FUTURE, is going to be VR that is capable of full synaptic response.

Christopher2846d ago

I think the good thing for them to do is drop 1st-party software VR development but make sure the hardware can be used on all future hardware. So, of someone wants VR software, they can get it with third-parties now and going forward. As long as they do that, they really can support it and at the same time keep focus on the games most people will want to buy and play.

rainslacker2846d ago (Edited 2846d ago )

Don't see why it wouldn't be useable on future platforms. It runs through the HDMI slot, and I'd imagine that will be available for quite a while to come.

We might see upgraded versions along the way(better displays/refresh rates, maybe more sensitive/numerous controls built in), but ultimately, the headset itself is just a display device with some input commands attached to it....not much different than how the consoles are already set up to work as is.

Still new things happen, so it's possible they could put more computing on the headset itself, and if so, that would likely make it a new "platform" since it will do more that would be required to run the games.

Even if the device doesn't fly off the shelves going in, I'd prefer Sony take the long road on this one. VR can go somewhere, but the commitment has to be there. Software is the key, and it only takes one majorly popular title to turn things around to just get people to dive in.

amnalehu2846d ago

PSVR is behind kinda goes without saying since it hasn't been released. I imagine that come October the gap will be closed.

I can finally play Half Life Alyx.

mariopasta39d ago

I can finally watch pron, I mean watch pronouns be pronounced in PC VR games that were previously not available on Playstation.

crazyCoconuts39d ago

be careful not to sprain your... tongue pronouncing those pronouns

Profchaos39d ago

I'm excited for that to plus I can try fallout 4 VR always wanted to play that

crazyCoconuts39d ago

I was lucky and held off on 4 until I played it in VR. It really is pretty awesome - you'll love it.

DaReapa39d ago

The icing on the cake would be if Sony / Valve allow for a Steam Link app much like it is for the Quest 3. Likely wishful thinking, though.

It could be free and it wouldn't matter at this point. There isn't really a PCVR Market and I say that as a PCVR user. It is modders and enthusiasts with a few retail products on Steam.
