Sony is adding an extra measure to avoid confusion in PSVR Games

Sony has been touting their exclusive VR headset for some time now. Their new PSVR headset is due to release in Q4, 2016. The new PSVR promises to bring exclusive VR games and VR content to the table. With all the sea of games, confusion is a possibility. Sony is doing their best to avoid it.

I hope the price for PSVR doesn't go up because of Brexit here in the UK!?.

Kerppamaister2878d ago

You guys are going to have 2 very tough years ahead,.. Watch central bankers from the FED, EU and Japan absolutely pounce the sterling,.. You don't piss American Empire and globalists off,..I really doubt in the end Britain will really be allowed to leave,..They will just punish you to the point of compliance. But good job guys ,.. Really a brave step.

Jayszen2877d ago (Edited 2877d ago )

@prroxxx

Why thank you for you good wishes.

Some people voted to leave because they do not like the level of immigration into the UK and thought voting to leave would reduce the numbers. Most did so because they do not like an unelected body having the power to determine the lives of half a billion people. There is nothing democratic about the present day EU. All the good intentions it started with have been eroded in a world dominated by business and corporations. Just yesterday they announced sanctions against Spain and Portugal for failing to reduce their budgets to a level required by the EU. The countries will be fined 0.2% of the GDP and lose 0.5% of the income from the EU fund which means that the deficits will only get worse resulting in a never ending cycle of sanctions and fines and increasing deficit till a point where both Spain and Portugal will be in so much debt that the countries are owned by the bankers and the IMF. Look at the manner in which personal savings of the Cypriots were raided in 2013 in order to recoup losses by their government.

Jayszen2877d ago (Edited 2877d ago )

@nitrogav

I suspect that the price may well go up as a result as the bankers and the EU are determined to teach the UK a lesson for daring to take what was a democratic decision. These guys have the fingers on the pulse to the extent that they know if they target PS4 gamers and increase the prices of games, the PS4 and the PSVR, the whole country will demand a referendum to cancel the previous referendum so that we can stay in the EU and ensure we pay less for our Playstation fix. (Add maniacal laughter at the end of this paragraph for full effect)

They have always included what controller you need on the box. When my daughter was into the PS move games their was always a pixture of the move peripheral on the game case.

Neonridr2878d ago

sigh.. so because people can't read we have to clutter up our game boxes with these large icons and extra writing everywhere. Shame.

Ristul2878d ago

Yeah, looks terrible imo.

Death2878d ago

Sony is touting this as a separate platform. Wouldn't it be easier to put the game in a different colored box? Instead of PS4 on it, they could say PSVR. That should eliminate any confusion.

OB1Biker2878d ago

Many games support PSVR but are also playable without and they all need a PS4 anyway

Retroman2878d ago Show
Christopher2878d ago

Different colored boxes costs more money whereas covers that go on them have to be printed anyway.

rainslacker2878d ago (Edited 2878d ago )

Different color or maybe slightly different shape. There's still plenty of empty space in the box itself. Not too extreme for storage purposes, just something that will be noticeable.

Believe Nintendo did this with Wii/WiiU titles, and even PS3/4 titles have both different colors and shapes.

While the wording should be enough, the box should be readily recognizable before one gets close enough to actually read it.

IMO, this would only really have to apply those those games which absolutely required PSVR.

OTOH, I don't recall them using different boxes for PSMove required games....and it isn't industry standard to use different colors or boxes for things that require a peripheral.

Anyhow, given that it isn't industry standard to use different colors or shapes within the same product line, using the same thing they did for PSMove, a banner and icon, is probably sufficient.

Death2878d ago

I had no idea blue was a cheaper color. Where do you think green sits on the color-price scale? I have no idea how you came up with the dye used in plastic having an impact on cost.

As for games that are playable on PS4 with or without VR, that isn't as easy as games exclusive to PSVR. I would rather see games exclusive that take advantage of the VR platform instead of games that have an optional VR component add on anyway.

Jayszen2877d ago

@Death

So people cannot read? It says on the box 'PSVR required' or 'PSVR compatible' in big letters right under the 'PS4 - Only on Playstation' banner. I mean you only have to look at the cover and gives you all the details required including 'You'll need these..' showing pictures of the PSVR in the games where it is absolutely required. The consumer has to take some responsibility here.

Death2877d ago

@Jay,

Most people can definitely read. The real question is why don't they? Many times it's because they make a spontaneous purchase. That is what many retailers rely on. I tend to research purchases ahead of time, but I am aware I am in the minority when it comes to it. It would benefit gamers if there was something more to distinguish PSVR and PS4 games since they are separate platforms according to Sony themselves. A lighter blue color or purple would go much further in saying "this is different" than some writing on a box cover that is more likely to be overlooked by casual gamers/customers.

darthv722878d ago

They could have just made the color of the boxes different like MS did with kinect games in relation to other 360 games. If you saw a purple box you knew it was kinect specific. Simple as that.

S2Killinit2878d ago

Some games are playable with both PSVR and traditional. Thats why they cant do that.

nitus102877d ago

Considering the PSVR can do a cinema mode pretty much all PS4 games can be displayed on it.

NarooN2878d ago

Eh not a big deal. Do you really spend a lot of time staring at the boxes?

Neonridr2878d ago

No, but you would assume a little bit of common sense. It's because of certain people that coffee cups have to say "Hot" on them, even though we all drink our coffee hot (minus iced coffee of course).

NarooN2878d ago

Well yeah I get that. The first thing I thought of when I saw the PSVR labels is "that's nice, but there's still gonna be idiots who manage to get confused anyway." Sad world we live in, lol.

KiwiViper852878d ago

For sale, useless christmas gift from grandma...

rainslacker2878d ago

One has to be aware of the product for the text to be relevant to them. Pictures help many see they they may not have what is required.

I don't expect customers to know everything there is to know....because a great many have no clue...but given the nature of the text, it would seem that a half intelligent consumer would at least want to inform themselves what it means given that the word, "required" is pretty prominent.

Sony Says The PS5 Is Its “Most Profitable Generation To-Date"

During Sony’s recent business segment meeting and investor presentation regarding its game and network services, the PlayStation company revealed that PlayStation 5 is the company’s “most profitable generation to-date.”

It’s the top slide of the presentation, showing that in its first four years, the PS5 generation has already hit $106 billion in sales, having almost caught up to the PS4’s total $107 billion generated.

Operating income for the PS5 generation has also already surpassed that of the PS4, having now reached $10 billion.

ApocalypseShadow46m ago(Edited 45m ago)

I wouldn't doubt it. They released a high quality system. A lot of high quality games from themselves and their support of 3rd party developers and indies. They released many high quality remakes and remasters. They released a high quality GaaS game going against the naysayers thinking Sony would abandon single player games. And they most likely are profiting a lot more than PS1, PS2 PS4 and the loss leading PS3 that drained all their profits.

Now, I'll wait to see what's cooking tomorrow. But can you use some of those profits to better support your high quality VR headset? Because, by supporting it, you can sell more games and more systems and make more profits?

I want RPGs for PSVR2! Good ones of course

one step closer to unlocking the headsets full power.

I'm extremely underwhelmed with how Sony has treated it's psvr2 customers seriously Nintendo treated it's Wii U owners of which the sales were probably equal in the headsets 2bd year v the consoles far better.

This is the least they could do

ravens5212h ago

I agree. I'm a day 1 consumer too. 😢 For my day 1 Vita. I do not like when Sony does that crap.

BlackOni11h ago

Agreed, but to your point, those dollars went a lot further back then than they do now. This should have been a consideration from the beginning.

Imagine buying a monitor or tv that could only work with one device. That's basically what this equates to, so they left a LOT of money on the table by not making it PC compatible from the getgo. But to Sony's credit, even they were unaware of how popular their games would be once released on PC.

Babadook78h ago

I doubt there will be foveated rendering implemented on PC. PSVR2 is already a better experience than PCVR. PS5 Pro will unlock the full power.

so now Sony is going to sell me an adapter I have to buy so I can use the headset on my PC? Gee, how generous of you :P

While it's great that I will be able to use this headset instead of my Index or Q3 for PC only VR titles, it's still a sad realization that Sony is sorta waiving the white flag here. Here's hoping they at least make some of their PSVR2 exclusive content available on PC as well now.

ocelot0713h ago

I don't see it as waving the white flag. PSVR the first one even though modders did get it working on pc it was a awful experience.

PSVR2 one of the best VR headsets available. Requires just one usb c cable. Even though I truly believe exclusives are what sell consoles. When it comes to VR it's very nich among gamers. I'm ecstatic that soon I can imo use the best VR headset on both ps5 and pc. No need for a pc vr headset. I have said it since PSVR2 was announced that I hope they make it pc compatible. With it being a very expensive headset and pc vr being more popular it just makes sense for Sony to do this.

12h ago
Neonridr11h ago

as opposed to a Quest 3 that requires no cables, or a single cable if you want to pair it with your PC right? ;)

While the tech is better in the PSVR2 for the most part (I own an Index, Q3 and PSVR2), I'm still let down by certain things. Headset rumble is a novelty. Eye tracking has only been used well on a couple of titles.

to each their own I guess, but to me this doesn't give me confidence that Sony is fully investing in their own hardware, more like they are stepping back to allow others to fill in the gaps.

ocelot078h ago

@Neonridr not owned a quest 3. Did own a quest 1 and 2 both where fairly good. Have used a quest 3 for a limited time and thought it was fine. But comfort wise not as nice as psvr2.

Tried using quest 2 via wireless streaming to my pc and it was so bad I much rather using a single cable and have a solid connection than streaming the game from pc to headset.

ocelot0713h ago

It's most likely just going to be a usb c to usb 3 adapter. Even for modern era a lot of new cases and motherboards don't have a usb c ports.

The budget but still fairly fairly high end pc I recently helped my friend build. He went with a b550 motherboard. Didn't have a usb c port or a on board socket to connect a pc case with a front panel usb c. Had to get a cheap pcie usb c.

1nsomniac9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

They developed the headset/attached usb c cable so that it wasn’t possible to run through any port other than a designated ps5 port. The adapter allows all the data to be passed correctly to a none designated ps5 port.
