Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness Review - IGN

Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness is an RPG that merely fulfills its obligations. It's not awful thanks to a cast of likeable characters and an interesting premise, but an abundance of clichés, uneven polish, and messy combat and AI make it less than memorable. And as its main story only provides around 20 hours of playtime instead of the 60 or more the series usually delivers, some of those obligations aren’t met in full.

This game isn't getting the best reviews. Very disappointing, I was looking forward to it for a while now.

So basically your going off someone else opinion for your purchase. Sites gave onechanbara a bad score but I like it.

gangsta_red2874d ago

"So basically your going off someone else opinion for your purchase."

Good lord! Exactly where am I saying I won't purchase this game? Please point to my exact words where I said I was not going to purchase this game?

"Sites gave onechanbara a bad score but I like it."

Good for you, guess what, not everyone likes what you like.

VsAssassin2874d ago

If you are an SO fan, go buy it, man. It has a lot going for it to enjoy the experience. So far, I'm really loving it.

DemonChicken2874d ago (Edited 2874d ago )

Expected this to be not on par as the previous games judging from the Japanese reviews from Amazon JP and other places due to the budget they received to develop the game.

Still keeping my pre-order though to support a now less likely future release, not worth the $60 (compared to say the supposed number of hours in FFXV) but I still bite =/

Hopefully the sales combined with the mediocre reviews will be enough to tell Square Enix there is still demand in this series and that they should have put more effort into this (so much of them saying they wanted to revive the JRPG genre on consoles due to mobile gaming increase in Japan).

blackblades2874d ago

"Very disappointing, I was looking forward to it for a while now."
To me that sounds like your not going to buy it because of the review.

MrSwankSinatra2874d ago (Edited 2874d ago )

How is being disappointed equate to saying you're not buying a game at all? You people are so fickle it's hilarious.

Rangerman12082874d ago

I really don't know what happened with the game. I mean, the director of Star Ocean 4 worked for this game and yet it suffered clichéd writing, technical issues and lack of huge content. This game is the The Order 1886 and Murdered Soul Suspect of 2016 (though atleast the game is better than Mighty No.9).

I really don't who should we blame; Square Enix or Tri Ace?

(my vote's on Square...)

xtheblackparade2874d ago

Lol I remember how shit everyone said The Elder Scrolls Online is and deserted, i'm playing it right now and it's a great game with lots and lots of people. Don't trust reviews, ever.

Sly-Lupin2874d ago

Not very surprising. The franchise has only had two good games, both of which are over a decade old.

DafunkyRebel2874d ago

It's an 8.8 for me, very fun, haven't put the controller down since I got monday. Ign is crap, they gave Evolve pos a 9 remember? Don't go with scores, just play it trust me.

This is a case of American media not knowing how to play, understanding jRPG games and what makes them good. The sites that are dedicated to the RPG genre like rpgfan.com gave it excellent scores. People need to stop paying attention to review scores from big corporate sites like IGN and Gamespot as they can be influenced by competitors looking to derail another anticipated exclusive for a more popular console. Most of the other sites that are less known and not being influenced by corporate suits are giving this game 7 and 8.

Edit. Well what do you know, this article was submitted by non other than Rookie_Monster, a supposed PS fan. This is the third Star Ocean reviews he submitted that are 6 and below. Too obvious.

gangsta_red2874d ago

Seriously, are you joking?

A bad game is a bad game. There may be room to argue if this game is decent but there's no denying the overwhelming mediocre review scores this game is receiving.

What would be in it for Gamespot and IGN to derail this game? Why would they need to down this game in order to make the competition look good?

RookieMonsterLives2874d ago

IGN, Gamespot, and Polygon are known to be bias on many of their reviews. Their avg ratings for Xbone games compared to PS4 exclusives are usually higher for the MS side. Look at The Last of Us review from Gamespot and Polygon for examples and compare them to how that game is rated on Metacritic. You tell me there are no influences on those scores at all when everyone knows TLOU was closed to perfect.

Idree2874d ago (Edited 2873d ago )

Hate to break it to you, the man has a point.

Famitsu, Japan's biggest gaming magazine praised it and basically gave it a 34/40. They use a system where 4 people review a game and each person hands out a score from 1 to 10 and add them up. This is also why i pre-ordered it, cause i was excited from all the praise and rave reviews the Japanese release got.

Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness (PS4) – 9/9/8/8 [34/40]

Also the review basically stated things like cliche's, fulfilling obligations & messy combat. Which is stupid, cause no one faults western games like Last of Us for their zombie cliche's or Witcher for its knight & magicians fighting monsters cliche. I enjoyed TLoU & Witcher 3 nontheless, but pointing out cliche's is a bad example cause maybe i want to play a game because of those cliche's?

I want to jump into a jRPG right now with a jRPG combat system, it's what i expect. People buy these game, or any game for that matter; because it delivers a certain type of gameplay.

Just cause the reviewer HAD to play it, and might have wanted to play a different type of game or is burnt out on jRPG's or doesn't like the genre in general, the score suffers.

Edit: Also, they took the Infinite Undiscovery combat system and improved on it, which was one of my favourite Tri-Ace combat systems.

gangsta_red2874d ago

"Hate to break it to you, the man has a point."

What point would that be, that reviewers are intentionally rating only Xbox games higher?

That these reviewers are getting paid by MS to rate PS4 games lower?

"Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness (PS4) – 9/9/8/8 [34/40] "

That's great, now compare that to the many other websites that have NOT given this game a high rating compared to the one that you specifically chose as an example of some type of bias.

"Which is stupid, cause no one faults western games like Last of Us for their zombie cliche's or Witcher for its knight & magicians fighting monsters cliche."

Except those games take those cliche's and expands upon them with other aspects that far outshine the glaring flaws that this game supposedly has.

And again, I find it hilarious that some of you here are complaining about these reviewer's 'opinion' of the game as they state flaws they found in the game as you and others do the same thing for other games that were actually critically praised.

jessionpc2874d ago (Edited 2874d ago )

Yea the moment I started hearing negative cons like, "I get lost, so it sucks", I just block the website with my trusty plugin.

ONESHOTV22874d ago

DrakeFan1... no i have played many RPGs and a hand full of them are really bad i dont think IGN would hire someone that only plays shooter to review and RPG

TheHorseTamer2874d ago

Drakefan,... If Gamespot and IGN are so bias against Sony and are influenced by MS $$$, why did IGN gave the last 2 Sony exclusives Ratchet and Clank remake and Uncharted 4 both 9s and another Sony exclusive that also happens to be jRPG, Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, a 9.5? And why did Gamespot gave a perfect 10 to Uncharted 4? Why are you upset that a Sony exclusive that hasn't been relavent for almost a decade now is scoring bad and blaming it on gaming websites that are popular with many gamers?

Segata2874d ago (Edited 2874d ago )

Well they reviewed Tokyo Mirage Sessions well and it's super Japanese. As Japanese as it gets..focuses a lot on Jpop and the sessions battle system is different. I expected western media to shoot it down and playing it myself it's a fantastic game. So if they get TMS they got SO5.

Sm00thNinja2874d ago (Edited 2874d ago )

Drakefan that statement is ridiculous were questioning a users playstation prowess because he submitted a review for a game you disagreed with? I have SO5 sitting in front of me right now debating on whether to open it because of the multitude of poor reviews for this game. Hes not picking and choosing reviewers arent saying great things about Star Ocean. Your levels of fanboy are keeping you from thinking clearly.

This game is nowhere near as terrible that Star Ocean 4 was but that game got a pass for its messy design & laughable characters, average story, the worst main character in the series & the over abundance of backtracking in the game became tedious.

Look playing Star Ocean 5 i can see it is not the best in the series but it is far more enjoyable than 4 ever was. For what Tri-Ace was able to make with a limited budget thanks to the poor sales of SO4 i commend them for making the most of what they had.

The battle system is not messy like IGN has said though it does some getting use too than previous games thanks to the more characters available on screen. The music is arguably the best in the series or up there at least. IGN & some of these sites that have given the game a 'low' score have all the right to do so but some of their arguments are questionable compared to Star Ocean 4 which received fairly high scores.

TheColbertinator2874d ago

I'm too busy for Star Ocean right now. FFXV and Persona 5 will feed my RPG hunger

Segata2874d ago

If you need some Persona now Tokyo Mirage Sessions is out

no_more_heroes2874d ago (Edited 2874d ago )

I completely missed when they gave the game that title. Up until the start of the week I still knew it as SMT x FE (yes, even during E3). When I heard the name Tokyo Mirage Sessions, given the few thumbnails I'd seen at the time, I thought it was either a graphic novel or a karaoke game.

No idea how that got past me. :/

Wish I had the disposable income to just go out and drop a couple hundred on a WiiU and the game right now, because I was quite interested in it. For good reason it seems, given the reviews so far.

TheColbertinator2874d ago

It did get more positive feedback than expected. Maybe I will pick it up.

Servbot412874d ago

No amount of positive feedback will get me to buy Persona X Idolm@ster.

Pancit_Canton2874d ago

I'm sure this so called reviewers only played the game on easy mode. I would like them to play the game on the hardest difficulty if they want to experience the game fully. It's been like that since the beginning of Star Ocean.

10 JRPGS that are Better than their Metascore

While I agree that the combat in Star Ocean 5's combat is pretty fun, saying that its story is more enjoyable than its predecessors is highly debatable. Also, it's not just the technical issues the game suffers from.

Gaming4Life19811566d ago

Star Ocean 5 was garbage and I was a huge star ocean fan.

Docmortem1566d ago

Completely disagree the games I played from the list all deserve their scores (Star Ocean, Nier, Tales of Zesteria, Type-0). While there are certainly people that love these games, they have flaws in many categories, that justify those scores.
Star Ocean especially bored the hell out of me. Lame story and face roll battle system (I finished the game anyway). These games are really niche and when rated by a broader public, fall short. In my opinion even in their own genre.

solideagle1566d ago

I personally have not played any game below 80 and thought wow this should have been 80-90 game. The only game I thought should have been 90 was Shadow Hearts II: Covenant. I am pretty sure there will be some games but average score usually is pretty good indication.

do you recommend any JRPG which you think were good/amazing but it didn't score well? I just purchased Tokyo xanadu but it seems way too slow like trails game but trail at least has good story. I will give it a shot

1566d ago
rainslacker1566d ago

I think there were quite a few JRPG games that got hit with lower meta scores last gen when all these reviewers were on their anti-anime tropes kick. Not that they should get up there into the high 80s or 90s, but they weren't 60-70 games either.

That's mostly died off this gen, thankfully

WickedLester1566d ago

Ni No Kuni 2 is way better than it's metascore.

solideagle1566d ago

I think Ni No Kuni 2 combat is pretty generic but if you add all DLCs then its combat is pretty awesome. I purchased the complete edition so I can say DLC changes the combat completely

FinalAeonX1566d ago

Ni no Kuni 1 is way better than its metascore

Father__Merrin1566d ago

meta scores are rubbish best ignore them. many gems out there

solideagle1566d ago (Edited 1566d ago )

can you please name few?

Kocurstvo1565d ago (Edited 1565d ago )

Useless to argument troll, but e.g. Eat Lead is hilarious and extremely funny, yet mediocre on metastupids.... Lords of the Fallen, Strange brigade... I could name hundreds

A beginner's guide to Star Ocean

Star Ocean is one of those series that did, and still does, things that others don’t. Think of it as a JRPG for fans of series like Star Trek. The casts regularly involve people from more advanced civilizations getting involved with those who are still growing, even though there are various measures in place to allegedly stop that sort of interference. As a result, people get energy weapons, cyborgs, magic and people who can turn into cats. It is a lot to take in.

Let's see here. There was another classic JRPG series that started this SCI Fi. It was Phantasy Star by Sega. Before Star Ocean, there was Phantasy Star 1-4 on Sega consoles

a beginners guide to star ocean....after playing the 3rd game
you've been told that the universe (SO lore) is just a ------------------- and close the book

VsAssassin1622d ago

Yeah, that plot twist didn't work for me. I wish SO3 isn't canon, but it is. Anyway, SE can just sweep SO3 under the rug perhaps by soft rebooting the franchise.

Nerdmaster1622d ago

The first two were so great, among the top RPGs on 16 and 32-bit era. I wonder why it went downhill after that...

LiViNgLeGaCY1622d ago

I still regard the 2nd Story as one of the greatest JRPG's of all time.

ChronoJoe1622d ago

Play the PS1 game and then the PS2 game and then the rest probably aren't worth your time unless you're a superfan of the series. I think that's all you need to know.
