The Souls Games Aren’t Fun: An Analysis

I kept having the urge to give the game another chance. But why? “The game isn’t even fun”, I told myself. And I still tell myself that. The Souls games aren’t fun. They’re just not.

Then what are they? They sure aren't boring, sure they can be extremely challenging and downright punishing hard, but getting past that point that you've died multiple times on is where the enjoyment comes in. The sense of accomplishment is what equates to the enjoyment of the games.

When you enjoy something that summarily means you have fun doing it!

salinas912878d ago

They surely can create conflicting emotions, especially since nowadays many games seem to be holding your hand. I try not to generalize, of course.

Cy2877d ago

Agreed. They're stressful and frustrating.

BiggerBoss2877d ago

Sounds like you never got gud

Cy2877d ago

Never cared to. I play games for an enjoyable experience, dying over and over again for hours just to get more skilled at something I'm not enjoying is pretty pointless.

jessionpc2877d ago

@Cy

My first souls game was Bloodborne. It was hard for a half hour. I played wow for 6 years before hand.

It's not even you didn't care to get gud, it's just you ain't ever gud.

Eidolon2876d ago (Edited 2876d ago )

I like the challenge, it's fun, but I can only take so much before I put it down for a bit and try play something else and think about how to reassess why I was having trouble. Dark Souls 3, I got to Anor Londo and I have tried so many times to beat Aldrich and then I see SL 1 's do it and it pisses me off, but to be fair all those fights I've noticed looked way eaiser, for some reason Alrich seems much more aggressive and does much more damage on my game. One hit on their game and it takes off almost nothing and they have much lower HP I would imagine, while on mine that same hit would take over 3/4 more bar embered and several points in Vigor.

nix2876d ago

Cy,

It is fun after you figure out the mechanics.

ColonelHugh2876d ago

@eidolon

I don't know if you're still stuck, but try wearing darkness and fire resistant robes and not armor since Aldrich eats right through it with his elements.

Hope you've got a female character, cause odds are you'll be wearing a dress. My manly bearded avatar of myself wearing a dress took out much of the joy of success.

For the record, Aldrich gave me a hard time because I was underleveled. Only the Nameless King gave me a hard time, and still wasn't as annoying as Demon's Souls' Tower Knight.

I could see that for the more casual gamer. I personally love them. Souls/Bloodborne have become one of my series of games ever. They aren't really hard, all it takes is a little patience and learning enemy movement patterns. If you try to play these games like your average hack and slash, you aren't going to have a fun time.

Cy2877d ago

Learning patterns is boring, though.

BlaqMagiq12877d ago

No you're just too slow and impatient.

oIITSBIIo2876d ago

I think you're too slow to die for hours and not gain the skills, and by slow I mean stupid.

sullynathan2876d ago

If you're dying over and over again, then you plain old just suck in the souls games.

One's man's pleasure is another man's pain. Everyone is different brah. I really really enjoy the Soul's series not because its challenging or because the bosses are epic. I love the games because of the adventure. You never know what you're going to find around the corner. It could be an enemy that could destroy you seconds, but more than likely, there is treasure waiting for you IF you can defeat this tough enemy. Not to mention, there's like always a ton of armor/weapons in the game so you can always change your playstyle.

Its a complicated RPG, but at its core, its a hack and slash adventure game and those are my favorite.

hirobrotagonist2877d ago

Stop sucking at videogames and then complaining about it

BiggerBoss2877d ago

I find the Souls games very fun. Some of the bosses are crazy hard, but the gameplay itself is really fun

The prevalence of parrying: Why is it so popular?

Parrying has been creeping into more games, with almost every high-profile title of the last few years featuring it in some way.  Why?

i understand the authors frustration i'm not the best at parrying in games. not that i can't complete a game that requires it but it is a definite harder thing for me than other kinds of techniques in games. which might be the main reason it's so heavily added in games nowadays. want to make your game challenging without having to do a lot of work? just add a parry boss. (what i mean by parry boss is a boss you have to beat by parrying such that their attacks will kill you otherwise)

Dudeson50d ago (Edited 50d ago )

I always think it's fine as long as such games also have the roll/dodge panic button. But I understand the will to parry, it seems so cinematic in a fight when you pull it off.

Hidetaka Miyazaki claims Dark Souls 2 “carried” the series forward

Dark Souls 2 remains a divisive entry in the landmark RPG franchise, but Hidetaka Miyazaki believes it led to the success of Elden Ring.

The game isn't good though.

Rols75d ago

DS2 was fine. While there was a bit of recycling assets or ideas for bosses, it was a bigger more open Dark Souls. The Fume knight boss is one of the hardest bosses in the series until Sekiro and Elden Ring were released.

CrimsonWing6975d ago

The problem with Dark Souls 2 was the same problem when a different director takes over for a sequel to an outstanding movie. It typically (there are exceptions) doesn’t have the feel and vision of the previous movie.

I wouldn’t say Dark Souls 2 is terrible. Had Dark Souls 1 never been a thing and we got this, I think it would have been praised more. The problem is it didn’t have the Miyazaki touch to it and felt pretty derivative. The soundtrack is a banger though.

Aussiesummer75d ago

And it will happen in the future when he doesn’t touch them as he is planning on.

MrBaskerville75d ago

I like DS 2, might even be my favorite of the 3. But it's a hard sell, there's so many obscure things you need to do to make it an enjoyable experience. So always find it hard to recommend, but it is worth the trouble.
