Opinion: Xbox One Has the Best Foundation for VR

Virtual Reality is a new, competitive, and emerging addition to the video game industry. How will the Xbox One hold up? I think pretty well. Let's find out why.

sangoku_d2905d ago

Best foundation if you need a step stool

MachuchalBrotha3162905d ago

Im sure you've been used as one plenty of times.

Fin_The_Human2905d ago

Someone has been hitting the pipe a little too hard.

Why o why2905d ago

Ok, so VR will be cool now. . . .

MagicBeanz2905d ago

Its always cool once Microsoft does it, that's how hypocrisy works.

sAVAge_bEaST2905d ago

Exactly how Hypocrisy works.

UnHoly_One2905d ago

For the record I still think VR is terrible regardless of what system you plug it into.

DLConspiracy2905d ago (Edited 2905d ago )

You can't generalize every gamer into a group because one of the loudest ones happens to dislike something for an agenda. Well I guess you can if you also have an agenda.

Until we hear the price I ain't jumping. Secondly Sony has the Better Games and that's all that matters.

Caedus5112905d ago

Better games is an opinion.

But to be honest that office simulator PSVR game looks dope

uptownsoul2905d ago

But PSVR (and any/all needed hardware) will have a better price point. That will probably still make it the market leader

List of Every PS VR Game. It Destroys Oculus

http://www.gamespot.com/art...

DivineAssault 2905d ago

@badboyz09, I didnt even know about 1/2 of those titles yet still pre ordered mine.. Also your correct. Like the wii, it will be the cheaper option and sell more.. However we have yet to see how it sells. Im sure VR is going to take off but theres no telling when it will be perfected.. Either way, i trust sony to put out enough games to warrant buying it.. Theres a lot of titles not only for this but for PS4 as well.. Its going to be a great generation.. HDD space is the only problem for me anyway.. I only have 1 TB and need to upgrade really soon.. Havent even installed uncharted yet. After that, its time to look for sales on 2.5' drives

Fin_The_Human2905d ago

Better games?

Name one game apart from GT Sport that might be worthy of VR goodness.

JackBNimble2905d ago

How about ace combat , I am pretty sure that 1 game will be worthy.

SniperControl2905d ago

Driveclub, EVE, Robinson, No Mans Sky(it will come) etc etc.

Fin_The_Human2905d ago

The thing about those games that you mentioned are that they are niche titles and not everyones cup of tea.

Dive Club is a beautiful game but it mostly remembered for its horrid launch.

EVE not everyone has the time to invest I those type of games and If they do who would want to play it on PSVR for hours.

No Mans Sky is still yet ti be determined if it will hold peoples interest like MineCraft or get repetitive and boring fast.

Never hears of Robinson so won't comment.

Ace Combat again has a particular market.

I am not saying it doesn't have games but what has been shown so far is OK at best...hopefully Sony controls what is released on PSVR and keep the quick cash garbage out.

jb2272904d ago (Edited 2904d ago )

Ace Combat, Golem, The Journey, Battlefront VR, Rigs, Psychonauts....off the top of my head but there are definitely many more.

"The thing about those games that you mentioned are that they are niche titles and not everyones cup of tea."

You could literally say that about any game in existence...you should just fess up & admit to being wrong in this instance. Sure, you can't unequivocally say that PSVR will have "better" games, but by the same token, you can't go insinuating that it has none that are "worthy" at all.

Beyond that, Sony is a massive creative company, they are the ones that can bring a James Bond VR or Ghostbusters VR experience...an exclusive Spider-Man VR experience, etc.

If you can't see that Sony has a lot of potential for some great exclusive experiences in the VR realm then you are simply blind.

WeAreLegion2905d ago

None of these points make sense.

Windows 10 gives no advantage.

PSVR does motion control, already. You would need two PS cameras or two Kinects to do full roomscale like Vive. Not happening.

Cloud computing isn't an Xbox exclusive.

donthate2905d ago

Windows 10 does give an advantage, because virtually any VR game out there now runs on Windows. It will continue to run on Windows, so yes, Windows 10 is where VR is at right now. Combine this with UWA and well, you get it.

PS VR does sensor tracking, Kinect does full body tracking. It's different. They both have advantages and disadvantages, but reality is that those controls are very limited anyhow.

Cloud computing is practically an Xbox exclusive, because nobody else is working on it practically. MS is pushing that boundary, and they just bought Havok Physics for a reason.

Remember how XBL wasn't MS exclusive, but it took Sony almost a decade to be close to XBL. Even today, XBL is still the better premium service.

JackBNimble2905d ago

Well you're going to need a pretty beefy gpu just to run occulus and vive efficiently on pc , do you really think xbox is going to even come close to high end pc specs any time soon?

donthate2905d ago

Jack:

At this point it is speculation, but the Xbox Scorpio is rumored to be 6 Tflops well above what is needed to support Rift/Vive, especially after you consider fixed hardware optimizations. It's not going to be cheap though, $500 console seems right in the ballpark.

rainslacker2904d ago

Any game running in Windows hasn't given the Xbox an advantage to date, why would it change for VR....particularly if there is no VR option on Xbox itself? You can have the strongest foundation in the world, but without the lumber to put on top of it, you're still homeless.

donthate2904d ago

rain:

That is because you didn't have UWA. Now it is going to be one codebase instead of being a port. MS is likely to include XBL services right into PC games too as an option for devs.

If you don't have any foundation, it doesn't matter how much lumber you have. Now you have the foundation and the lumber. If MS goes with a third party headset like Rift/Vive and has UWA then that synergy is going to be key.

Not to speak the price point of each hardware, 700$ vs 400$...
Many will try the PVR just because it's less expensive...

donthate2904d ago

People will try anything if you hype it enough, but will they put money in it?

Reality is that a PS VR is $500 for most, and cost more than a PS4. I can't see many consumers that are price sensitive to $50 price drop to adopt a $350-400 console to spring $500 on a headset that has limited functionality, content and questionable history. This is core gamers that buy consoles these days too, enthusiast tend to be on PC, and VR is enthusiast market right now.

Maybe it will change in 2-3 years when price drops and content quantity and quality is upped significantly, but we aren't there yet. They are far more likely to just pass their time with a little smart phone VR app and call it a day right now.

jukins2905d ago

Hmm. I think the foundation is actually the worst. .they have no dedicated headset, using occulus or vive is costly. As well as Microsoft decoupling kinect from the xb1 console early in its life cycle. All things considered it would require a heavy investment to get into vr with Microsoft having to possibly buy another console headset and kinect camera?

thexmanone2905d ago (Edited 2905d ago )

Kinda sounds like what needs to be done if you want to enjoy the PSVR. Buy another console headset, Neo and a camera

2905d ago
BlaqMagiq12905d ago

You don't have to buy the Neo. Where are you getting this from?

donthate2904d ago (Edited 2904d ago )

bruce:

The thing I see is, if you are in the market for VR you know how much you are going to spend. If you are in the console market, you might look at VR, but then you spent $350 for your console when it was on sale with $50 off and came with a game. Do you really think many of those people are going to pay $500 for PS VR in the first place?

Point being, this is enthusiast high end upper market. People that don't mind dropping $1000 on their gaming hobby to try the latest and of those, very few are in the PS4/XB1 market right now. You may reach some of them with a specific bundle with high end enough performance like PS4k/Neo or Xbox Scorpio (although I like BeastBox name better). The PS4 with PS VR is likely going to be de-emphasized moving forward. A lot of people is about to get burned when PS4k/Neo drops.

I already did, I bought the PS4 with Darth Vader art work on it. Super cool to look at, but not so much with a PS4k/Neo coming out. :(

firelogic2905d ago

The company that has zero VR r&d, that we know of, has the best foundation? The company that denounced VR and opted to pursue Hololens instead?

Not Sony which has 40+ million consoles in homes already.
Has their own dedicated headset which works on the 40+ million consoles in homes already.
Already has dev kits out in the wild with games being made for it.
Is coming out this year.
Is cheaper than the alternatives.

You're right. My money's on Microsoft.

Rookie_Monster2905d ago (Edited 2905d ago )

@firelogic
"The company that has zero VR r&d, that we know of, has the best foundation?"

You have no idea what you are talking about. MS has been dealing with VR for years now and have some of the most prominent VR developers working for them.

TheCommentator2905d ago

Love how you get all the disagrees, but MS has been working for years on things like Irides and the recently announced peripheral vision lighting system. I'm betting on OR working on the OG XB1 through Irides, since MS has cloud infrastructure in place already that can handle things.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2905d ago

@Rookie Monster

So would you mind posting links to articles that mention Microsoft working with VR. While you're at it, name some of these "prominent" VR developers that you claim are working for them.

KiwiViper852905d ago (Edited 2905d ago )

I remember seeing an article a few weeks after the occulus deal, starting that Microsoft provided new higher quality lenses. Pretty sure it takes longer than a week to invent something like that...

http://arstechnica.com/gami...

donthate2905d ago

MS probably has more R&D in VR research than Sony and Oculus. That is also why MS is doing AR, because it is a much more difficult problem.

If the rumors are true, Xbox Scorpio will be better suited to VR, have the superior headset and have a platform that is melded with Windows 10. Think Windows 10 VR software on Xbox Scorpio!

Say what again?

donthate2905d ago (Edited 2905d ago )

elektranine:

Seeing how you spell MS, I'm going to assume you are either a Pony or a MS hater... or heck, both. Patents are revealed when they are ready. For instance, when MS released Project Natal, now known as Kinect there weren't that many patents either.

MS spends massive on R&D on a lot of different things, and they will pull people together to execute a product. It's not like there a lot "VR" patent that isn't bullsh!t out there.

Being a leader or follower, kind of depends on the outcome. MS definitely led the XBL and online gaming on consoles. They also led, cost and development efficiency for consoles. They are now doing it with cloud.

Also, did you know that Surface division is now profitable and serious contender? Xbox despite not selling as well as Playstation, still has a significantly larger marketshare than the original Xbox. The Xbox 360 was arguably sold as well if not better than PS3. So yes, people do buy MS hardware.

It would seem more so than Sony and Nintendo..... considering the former merely has one product that sells, and the latter doesn't have a product that sells.

PC VR On Steam Is Actually Growing, Not Shrinking

It's sometimes claimed that PC VR usage on Steam is shrinking, but here's why that isn't actually true.

Good, silence the naysayers who talk bollocks.

Tacoboto30d ago

The context in the article is kinda like the discussion of MAU metrics. Manipulation of figures to get it to say what you want it to.

I.e. "The proportion is shrinking, but there are more players so it's actually not shrinking!"

Crows9029d ago

That's not like mau metrics ....

If there's 20,000 players and only 10% use it and then there's a jump to 40,000 and 10% are using still using it then....there's been an increase because 10% of 40k is higher than 20k.

That's an actual number increase of people using it. That's growth.

Tacoboto29d ago

MAU is used to reference engagement or growth in a game. The conversation is muddied because people want to talk about sales instead of player count. How is this not like that?

Growth can mean and be two different things. Growth of quantity, or growth of proportion. People in finance and accounting will never look at 2% in one instant and look at 2% at a later instant and say "Hey look, growth!" That's a joke, to be frank. The 2% is more than the earlier 2% but that 98% remainder also grew.

Eonjay30d ago

Which is why Sony is putting PSVR 2 on it.

Abnor_Mal30d ago

I wish Sony would have given upgrades to many of their PSVR games for their VR2 system. Unfortunately for me their pcvr movement is not doing me any favors, hopefully there’s some kind of trickle down effect.

Eonjay30d ago

Sony would only be able to Patch its own games. Devs would have to go back and create their own patches. To be frank, whats gonna stop this from happening is money. Are they willing to pay to have a developer create the patch, QA to test...

Abnor_Mal29d ago

@Eonjay totally agree with what you said about third party devs and the cost, Q&A etc, but Sony could have updated Astrobot, The Persistance, Blood and Truth, and Farpoint. Have a few in-house devs work on DriveClub vr, and pay for an update for Rush of Blood and maybe a Shadow of the Colossus VR. I would love to play Borderlands VR on PSVR2.

shinoff218329d ago

Sure Sony mightve been able to help but reality is most of those titles were from 3rd parties.

ApocalypseShadow29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

What he's saying is that Sony should have lead by example. Instead, they haven't done shit bringing them forward and expected 3rd parties to do it themselves in bringing their own games. If Sony's not going to do it, why should they?

It's like when they lead by example in the creation of their games. Or lead by example when they make their hardware.

Hate to say it, but for PS VR 2, they are lagging big time. GT is nice. But if you're tired of sims, then there's just Horizon. I'd rather have Blood and Truth remastered at that level or a sequel than what they currently released. No chance of that though as they killed London Studios. Another bullshit move they made. About as bad as killing Evolution Studios to keep GT as their only racing game. I like Sony's platform. But I'm not buying their headset if they're not going to put in the effort like they do with flat games.

shinoff218329d ago

Exactly. I almost bought vr2 but it's the games missing. Sure that horizon might be dope but I'd prefer the full horizon, or last of us, Spiderman, something. Pay some 3rd party devs. I was hoping to get that fallout 4 but that's not happening now lol

shinoff218329d ago

Vr is dope. Idk know why people wanna hate. It's definitely a dope next step. Even if it's a sidestep. I really wish more developers would throw down. Imagine a last of us with vr, or a final fantasy game, all kinds of stuff. It would be incredible.

This is great news I love virtual reality and my psVR2 however it's clear that the current bespoke way of building VR games is not working. There's some great games that have been released Absol but they are few and far between and if they are native they are clearly lower in budget and scope then at least I would like. It's definitely jarring to.go from high quality games like Spider-Man 2 to the biggest VR releases like Arizona sunshine 2 and see the huge gulp in quality.

This company aims to streamline porting older games into VR and make them feel as VR native as possible.

And to be honest some of my favourite VR experiences have been traditionally flat screen games ported into VR like resident evil 7, 8 4, doom 3 with the aim controller or borderlands 2.

And I'm not saying that there isn't great native VR games to be found I'm saying more traditional games ported over would be very welcome we have decades of amazing games that we all love and VR presents an opportunity to truely bring us into the world.

just_looken55d ago

The floating hands wires climbing/tool sims need to go for sure.

But i want the sword art online vr now that would be awesome

Leeroyw55d ago

I just found my people. Massive vr fan here but I want to live in older more broader era experiences that were made for traditional gaming. But in VR.

just_looken55d ago

@Lee

Rollarcoasters would be something else in vr

aaronlif1053d ago

Yes! I hope they bring Doom 3 to PSVR2. I was happy to see it on PSVR but couldn't help but feel like they should have held off for the PSVR2 for that game. They had to substantially cut the visuals on that. I feel like a psvr2 version would be able to do it better justice. I've asked the company that made the psvr port if there was any plans to make a psvr2 version, they said no but that if they were asked by Sony to do it they would. I also would love to see Star Wars Squadrons get a PSVR2 version.

Profchaos53d ago

Yes squadrons I forgot about that one it was amazing to play online with flat screen gamer friends some of my favourite multiplayer moments

RiseNShine55d ago

Amazing news, there're so many forgotten gems out there, these guys have been consistently porting old games like Return to Wolfenstein, Quake 4, jedi knight, etc. Sounds great that they can earn a living by doing official ports, publishers dust off some old properties, gamers get great games in VR, we all win.

mudakoshaka55d ago
